Christmas Weekend Analysis: Bollywood Box Office

It’s the biggest weekend of the year and we have two films lined up for release in 2015. Rohit Shetty’s Dilwale and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bajirao Mastani will be battling it out for box office supremacy. But the reason both makers want this weekend is because Christmas has been the most lucrative weekend for film business – better than the other two festivals, Eid and Diwali.

Back in 2008 when Aamir Khan released Ghajini, the period was considered to be dull for film business. It gets freezing cold in major cities like New Delhi and surrounding cities of the National Capital Region and the other centres in the North are also affected by the cold wave. But Aamir Khan came, he saw and he conquered the weekend.

A combination of his stardom and quality films resulted in him delivering the highest grosser of all time – every single time he released a film during Christmas, the film went on to be a All Time Blockbuster.

Check out the list of Christmas releases since 2008.

  • 2008: Ghajini 116 crore – All Time Blockbuster
  • 2009: 3 Idiots 202 crore – All Time Blockbuster (74% growth over previous year)
  • 2010: Tees Maar Khan 61 crore – Semi Hit (70% year-on-year drop)
  • 2011: Don 2 112 crore – Hit (83% drop from 2010, 44% drop from 2009)
  • 2012: Dabangg 2 155 crore – Blockbuster (38% growth from 2011, 23% drop from 2009)
  • 2013: Dhoom 3 285 crore – All Time Blockbuster (85% growth)
  • 2014: PK 341 crore – All Time Blockbuster (18% growth)

Shah Rukh Khan and Akshay Kumar released their films during the same weekend, but both weren’t very successful. Salman Khan did better, but Dabangg 2 wasn’t as big a success as the first film and Salman couldn’t quite match upto to the success of Aamir films.

Aamir and Yash Raj Films started a new trend in 2013, when they released Dhoom 3 a week before Christmas, giving their film 3 open weeks at the box office. The result was even better, as Dhoom 3 went on to amass Rs 288 crore net in India and was a 600 crore plus grosser worldwide. A year later, with a similar release date, the 3 Idiots duo of Aamir and Rajkumar Hirani returned and struck box office gold yet again. The numbers were simply mind-boggling.

This year, with two movies releasing in the same weekend and 3 open weeks at the box office, the stakes are very high (combined cost is nearly Rs 250 crore) and the expectations even higher. Can Dilwale and Bajirao Mastani combined, generate business in excess of Rs 400 crore in India? How will the two films perform overseas? Will there be year-on-year growth – if not, the trade will be disappointed if the two films combined can’t collect as much as PK did last year.

  • Looks like Dhoom 3 is still running in theatres …!

First we knew that its lifetime was 281 cr .
Then we came to know that it was actually 283 cr .
    And now , its 288 cr …!

    @Indicine :
Any chance of Dhoom 3 entering the 300 cr club …?

  • This year it’s gonna change…. If u see the list… All movies which wer success wer either very gud in content or a sequal…. Others wer average (tmk .. Don 2) this year also it will be the content which will seal the fate of both the film’s !!!

  • Dilwale will lead in each & every circuit tomorrow.

“Bajirao Mastani” badly need some great word of mouth to survive in front of “Dilwale”.

  • Cheap tactics of SLB and Eros has been exposed ! Bombay High Court has ordered the single screens to show Dilwale .

Now Dilwale will hopefully get a higher screen count .

  • Eros has already lost the clash
and now lost the case too
and will lose the cash too ;)

Everyone who will clash with SRK will lose clash case cash and everything.!

  • bettr release date for dilwale was 25 dec. srk fans will agree.
18 dec was gud non holyday fr bajirao.
by clashing dilwale did free promotion of bajirao. bajirao in any case will do more or less same business.

  • I dont understand why you Indian hate SRK so much. He is only in a race to make your country so proud by taking India to the world but you guys always pull off his legs. You haters should be ashamed of yourselves to blame a true patriotic Indian. He is a global megastar so try not disrespect him if you can’t respect him.

  • Same goes for Rohit Shetty, who is Mr Blockbuster Director of our times, whose earlier movies are being watched daily on TV channels & u can watch them with family without 0% hesitation.

  • So this Dynamite Combination of SRKAJOL + ROHIT SHETTY is gonna blow away everything from negativity to Bajirao coming in its way.

  • Highest grosser for khans :?

    Eid : Salman Khan
    Diwali : Salman Khan
    X-Mas : Aamir Khan
    Non-Holiday : Salman Khan
    Independence Day : Salman Khan

    Where is haklu?

  • dabbang 2 was 120 mins short.movie n diasppointment for salman fans.
it worked cause of salman n songs.
TMK was brainchild of farah which further gave birth to HNY.
amir on crismas was with murgadoss yrf n hirani twice . he used this period best way.
this yr ovrrated shetty came to spoil crismas on big shoulders of srk. this angered bhansali n he remained unmoved with his dream project. so we witness a clash.

  • It’s one and only megastar aamir Kahn who has made Christmas as most lucrative period. Others are eating and cashing on his own produced egg. Other taking benefits of the original inventor megastar aamir khan. Waiting for dangal eagerly.

  • Dream Projects Are Meant To Be Released Solo And Marketed Well!! Koi Chu hi Dream Project ko SRK Ke Film Se Clash Karayega!

DHOOM 3 N BB IS NT UR LEVEL TO COMMENT.

  • I have watched Dilwale in Dubai today. Movie is very good… It is SRK and kajol movie.. That’s it… Everything is perfect. The only problem is comedy section… First time I feel Rohit had gone wrong with comedy. I have not laughed even once but the emotion scenes between SRK n kajol melted my heart….I watched the movie thrice already because I’m a big fan of SRK!!
