After the super successful Singh Is King, Akshay Kumar is back with Chandni Chowk to China produced by Warner Bros, one of the largest production houses in Hollywood. The film directed by Nikhil Advani (Kal Ho Na Ho, Salaam-e-Ishq) also stars Deepika Padukone and Ranvir Shorey along with Mithun Chakraborty in a cameo. Chinese Martial Arts actors Gordon Liu (Kill Bill) and Roger Yuan are also a part of the movie.
The pre release hype has been huge, with talks of Akshay Kumar turning into a global sensation and extending his fan-following further. Trade pundits believe, with decent word of mouth, Chandni Chowk To China can in fact beat the Rs 200 crores (worldwide gross) record set by Aamir Khan’s Ghajini in less than 3 weeks. Does Nikhil Advani – Akshay Kumar deliver? Or do they need to? Welcome, Singh Is Kinng and many other Akshay Kumar comedies, being mediocre at best, have worked big time at the box-office.
Sidhu (Akshay Kumar) is an uneducated naïve yet a superstitious man hailing in Chandni Chowk, Delhi. Despite the kicks and advises from his Dada (Mithun Chakroborty), down on his luck this vegetable cutter from the paranthe wali galli visits all possible saint’s, tarot reader’s and baba’s in search of any form of luck. Just when he had given up all hopes of getting something out of the luck charms to make his life, two men from China come in search of him claiming him to be the reincarnation of a war hero from the past and with an offer to take him to China. Sidhu blissfully sets forth to China with Guru Chopstick (Ranvir Shorey) who instigates dreams of a delicious future and forgets to reveal the menace which awaits him. He dreams of a wonderful life with his dream girl, who he calls Ms. TSM (Deepika Padukone), on his way to china. Will this clumpsy weak man live to the hopes of the villagers in fighting against evil and buy them their freedom?
Chandni Chowk To China Review
Akshay Kumar himself claimed recently that the movie lacks sense. Chandni Chowk To China not just lacks sense but rather has no story. Unfortunately, the movie is poorly directed and mostly filled with over the top performances. The first half is a complete drag; the pace is extremely slow and the film is completely dependent on Akshay Kumar and his by now trademark antics to carry it along. But watching his previous 10 odd back to back films with the very same mannerisms, it’s getting awfully hard to sit through.
The second half is better, the action is great but the climax is as flat as a cola without fizz. After all the build up, which consumes the entire second half, a thrilling climax is the least you can hope for. You expect it to be a serious combat between the good and the evil, but the director has instead opted to make it funny. Funny it is, but convincing; it isn’t.
The action is top class, going by the standards of Hindi films. Choreography is brilliant and the way Tere Naina is picturized is nice. The music is good, the Chandni Chowk To China Title song and the S.I.D.H.U track stands out.
Akshay Kumar is getting extremely repetitive with his characters. It’s the same as what you saw in many of his previous films. He’s hilarious at times but while you watch him perform, you get the seen-those-a-million-times-before kind of feeling. Why can’t a capable actor, commanding super popularity, with many talented directors eager to sign him on; attempt something different?
Deepika Padukone looks stunning and has put in a lot of effort into those action sequences. In a negative role, as a Chinese, Deepika is brilliant. Mithun Chakraborty is fine in a short role. The talented Ranvir Shorey disappoints. The Chinese actors are good!
Overall, for a movie that has been hyped as one of the biggest release of the year, it has about 2 – 3 funny scenes and a couple of good action sequences! That’s about it. If that’s good enough to spend your hard earned money on the film, go for it.
Finally, with a hope that Akshay starts experimenting with his roles and tries something different for a change, I go with 2 stars for Chandni Chowk to China. Disappointing!

Other Notes – The funniest thing about the film was the potato with the shape of the Hindu god Ganesha. Akshay somehow manages to hold on to it throughout the film. Bodies are broken, blood is shed, Akshay is thrown from the top of the Wall of China.. but through it all.. the potato manages to survive!
On a serious note, CCTC is strictly for Akshay Kumar fans, others stay far away. What really baffles me is, why doesn’t Akshay try something different? Why is he stuck with his same old successful formula? You might argue that the same movies are working big time at the box-office. I don’t deny that, but wouldn’t an actor love to have a movie like Taare Zameen Par, Chak De India or a Jodhaa Akbar in his filmography? Hope things change with Eight by Ten directed by Nagesh Kukunoor, which I believe could be Akshay’s best movie in a long long time!! I just saw 10 minutes of the cc2c online now.. what to say about this movie.. it’s as I expected.. the best thing to say is that Akshay was right when he said his movies are inspired from the cartoon Tom & Jerry! if you love Tom & Jerry so this is nothing different and nothing better but done with real people and not, animation!

Oh my Gosh! I went to watch CC2C TWICE in a week…
i liked it in some aspects but there were too many unrealistic bits of the movie like getting kicked into the air and the action scene in the 2nd half-cosmic kick. The graphics were not impressive atleast make it look real like if that was a hollywood movie they would make it look and feel realistic.
Lastly, there were moments in this film were the furthest I got to laughing was smiling although there were some comic scenes that I thought were good like the scene were askshay is shutting ranvir shorey’s head. askshay signature song and the training part where akshay is saying i will have iron kiss…iron chest and iron…as well as the hindi slang words just make me laugh terribily.
Overall, it was an ok film and I particularly like this film so that I can get a laugh out of it!!!

Well I don’t know what to say, I really like akshay kumar as an actor, and he has really proven he’s the king of bollywood over the last couple of years, but sadly to say I didn’t like chandni chowk to china a bit. I usually don’t like to go into detail about what I didn’t like I either like it or I don’t.
Fathiya I think I read one of your comments and I totally agree with you when you said that other movies are more deserving to go the oscars than movies like ghajini. I also myself feel the movie “Aamir” was an excellent choice. I had watched that movie myself and it was completely realistic, and yeah here in the west we do like more realistic movies, all this masala action packed movies only seems to work in India. Last year I visited with my family to India, and I get the feeling the second generation of Indians here (I’m from canada) are alot more in tune with our roots and are more down to earth than the young generation in India, they are just so screwed and they try to act all western and they think its just all about wearing practically no clothes and being loose. When I went to India, guys there think girls here are just willing to put out and are totally loose, and I guess alot of movies are just catering to that kind of audience these days. When you go to watch a movie these days don’t bother putting on your thinking caps too much. This is deepika padukone’s second movie and I didn’t like her in this movie either as her first one OSO, which was so stupid. I’m also of the opinion more worthy and deserving movies should go to the oscars that portray Indian movies better. I don’t want to get off the subject but has anyone here seen Slumdog Millionaire? It’s a really good movie, it has a few very shocking scenes in it in the first and early part of the movie but overall very nicely done. One thing I have observed tima and again that movies that actually are good and deserving get rejected and movies that are unreal and nothing but time pass and masals packed are liked, it just shows what people are coming to these days.
people cc2c has grossed over 45 crores in india and over 13 crores overseas so please keep your mouth shut when you have something negative to say about the movie! GO AND SEE THE MOVIE FOR YOUR SELF! If you didnt like the movie its ok thats your opinion just dont tell others not to watch it because you didnt like it. The movie was really really good and akshay and depika did an outstanding job, there were some mistakes by the director but the movie still is a super hit movie! Also I read lot of comments and lot of people keep comparing akshay and srk. when it comes to the best actor in India there only one king of bollywood thats Akshay kumar! The audience in India love comedy, fantasy & action, most of them don’t like romantic or sad movies, unlike we overseas ppl.. we love realistic movies, romantic drama but we don’t love action, and we do love comedy movies but some high class ones e.g. Dostana and the comedy in Bhool Bhulaiya, Rabne, Ghajini, I loved the comedy scenes in Rabne & Ghajini but didn’t like the action in Ghajini.. stupid action low class.
About western ppl, bollywood must present movies like Aamir, Rock On, Jodhaa Akbar.. quality and some deserving movies, TZP was good except one scene in the movie and that might’ve caused a problem with western ppl.. no one knows, and if bollywood thought to present Ghajini for Oscar.. they’ll kick it out for sure. I don’t care how much money cctc has made, even deepika padukone and akshay kumar adimitted on sa re ga ma pa finale tody live that they know the movie has not done well and akshay kumar himself admitted on tv in front of a live audience on the finale of sa re ga ma pa that he knew he had done a terrible movie and when I started watching it just 5 minutes into I was so bored. I mean come on there has got to be some standards, just because you throw a great actor like akshay kumar into a movie that doesn’t mean its going to be a hit. Most movies that come out in any year only a few by my standards are worth watching, and sometimes these off beat movies are much better than mainstream movies like “Aamir” just as an example. CCTC is really ridculous I think akshay kumar has become too seasoned of an actor to just do such mediocre films like this. As for deepika padukone, nothing great to said about her, I never liked her from the beginning. Many times these actors will be a hit in their debut movies and start flunking in subsequent movies, and before you know they are finished. I personally think as they say “slow and steady win the race” and some of the best actors are the ones who have been in the business a long time, like akshay kumar and hrithik roshan is just an exception he’s just a natural born actor.
i saw the first 15 mts of this movie shown to me on a dvd and i flinched.. this has to be the worst shittiest lousy moronic wholesome boredom to have hit our sensibilities after drona and dostana.. akshay and dada mithun were doing such heavyduty stuff in the name of comedy that i simply put the off button ..this has never happened with me apart from the two movies i mentioned .. there have been others also but cc2c is the worst i think after agg and lal badshah of amitabh ..if there was anything like negative comments i would give it -5
