After the super successful Singh Is King, Akshay Kumar is back with Chandni Chowk to China produced by Warner Bros, one of the largest production houses in Hollywood. The film directed by Nikhil Advani (Kal Ho Na Ho, Salaam-e-Ishq) also stars Deepika Padukone and Ranvir Shorey along with Mithun Chakraborty in a cameo. Chinese Martial Arts actors Gordon Liu (Kill Bill) and Roger Yuan are also a part of the movie.
The pre release hype has been huge, with talks of Akshay Kumar turning into a global sensation and extending his fan-following further. Trade pundits believe, with decent word of mouth, Chandni Chowk To China can in fact beat the Rs 200 crores (worldwide gross) record set by Aamir Khan’s Ghajini in less than 3 weeks. Does Nikhil Advani – Akshay Kumar deliver? Or do they need to? Welcome, Singh Is Kinng and many other Akshay Kumar comedies, being mediocre at best, have worked big time at the box-office.
Sidhu (Akshay Kumar) is an uneducated naïve yet a superstitious man hailing in Chandni Chowk, Delhi. Despite the kicks and advises from his Dada (Mithun Chakroborty), down on his luck this vegetable cutter from the paranthe wali galli visits all possible saint’s, tarot reader’s and baba’s in search of any form of luck. Just when he had given up all hopes of getting something out of the luck charms to make his life, two men from China come in search of him claiming him to be the reincarnation of a war hero from the past and with an offer to take him to China. Sidhu blissfully sets forth to China with Guru Chopstick (Ranvir Shorey) who instigates dreams of a delicious future and forgets to reveal the menace which awaits him. He dreams of a wonderful life with his dream girl, who he calls Ms. TSM (Deepika Padukone), on his way to china. Will this clumpsy weak man live to the hopes of the villagers in fighting against evil and buy them their freedom?
Chandni Chowk To China Review
Akshay Kumar himself claimed recently that the movie lacks sense. Chandni Chowk To China not just lacks sense but rather has no story. Unfortunately, the movie is poorly directed and mostly filled with over the top performances. The first half is a complete drag; the pace is extremely slow and the film is completely dependent on Akshay Kumar and his by now trademark antics to carry it along. But watching his previous 10 odd back to back films with the very same mannerisms, it’s getting awfully hard to sit through.
The second half is better, the action is great but the climax is as flat as a cola without fizz. After all the build up, which consumes the entire second half, a thrilling climax is the least you can hope for. You expect it to be a serious combat between the good and the evil, but the director has instead opted to make it funny. Funny it is, but convincing; it isn’t.
The action is top class, going by the standards of Hindi films. Choreography is brilliant and the way Tere Naina is picturized is nice. The music is good, the Chandni Chowk To China Title song and the S.I.D.H.U track stands out.
Akshay Kumar is getting extremely repetitive with his characters. It’s the same as what you saw in many of his previous films. He’s hilarious at times but while you watch him perform, you get the seen-those-a-million-times-before kind of feeling. Why can’t a capable actor, commanding super popularity, with many talented directors eager to sign him on; attempt something different?
Deepika Padukone looks stunning and has put in a lot of effort into those action sequences. In a negative role, as a Chinese, Deepika is brilliant. Mithun Chakraborty is fine in a short role. The talented Ranvir Shorey disappoints. The Chinese actors are good!
Overall, for a movie that has been hyped as one of the biggest release of the year, it has about 2 – 3 funny scenes and a couple of good action sequences! That’s about it. If that’s good enough to spend your hard earned money on the film, go for it.
Finally, with a hope that Akshay starts experimenting with his roles and tries something different for a change, I go with 2 stars for Chandni Chowk to China. Disappointing!

Other Notes – The funniest thing about the film was the potato with the shape of the Hindu god Ganesha. Akshay somehow manages to hold on to it throughout the film. Bodies are broken, blood is shed, Akshay is thrown from the top of the Wall of China.. but through it all.. the potato manages to survive!
On a serious note, CCTC is strictly for Akshay Kumar fans, others stay far away. What really baffles me is, why doesn’t Akshay try something different? Why is he stuck with his same old successful formula? You might argue that the same movies are working big time at the box-office. I don’t deny that, but wouldn’t an actor love to have a movie like Taare Zameen Par, Chak De India or a Jodhaa Akbar in his filmography? Hope things change with Eight by Ten directed by Nagesh Kukunoor, which I believe could be Akshay’s best movie in a long long time!! Fathiya I totally agree with you and I’m sorry I misunderstood you, but you’re right about one thing, this raj is a kachra. I don’t know why the hell the some people here keep telling fathiya to get out, just because she’s more level headed down to earth and has got simple tastes in movies or rather should I say GOOD TASTE in my opinion. Kiran: the problem which some on this website have with me is that I’m different in my views and the way I judge any movie, sometimes I find a movie which was a super hit at the box office e.g. JTYJN is a crap, and when I express my opinion about it, they just hate it..and they hate me too because I like Shahrukh and I respect him, so they try their best to say the opposite, and what make me nervous.. these ppl are like that.. they just want everyone to be like parrots.. repeat the same and what they say online.. if they say the movie is good.. so everyone has to say so.. the movie is good.. if they say Akshay is the best.. then all of us have to repeat the same, and no one has the right to say something different!! Hey Fathiya yeah your words are very true, I also didn’t lik JTYJN, the acting was very bad, the only reason shy I think that movie did well was because of mran khan’s looks and girls just flocked to see his movie, his mamu Amir Khan promoted the movie heavily and being his nephew the movie was bound to have a good opening. I couldn’t watch the movie for more than 10 minutes but since I got the dvd I thought oh well might as well get my paisa vasool and just drag myself by the teeth throughout the movie. The most lamest thing in the movie was the acting by sohail khan and arbaaz khan, how dumb!!!Anyways not to get off the topic, yeah cctc was a very bad movie with a bad script and all, but Akshay kumar is a great actor, I mean you must have seen his movies last year and all. I mean sharukh has made many flop and bad movies in his career aslo. As I’ve said before I’m not really any particular actors fan or anything, if I like a movie the story line and script, acting and everything I’ll praise it, even movies with actors that aren’t well known. Yes you are a right about one thing people are narrow minded, because that is what is considered normal these days. In real I come across situations all the time like this, but I know where such people end up, they usually don’t even amount to shit in life, I’m engaged to be married and I know where such loser people go, I went to shcool with a alot of girls and guys who thought they were “happening” and now these guys and girls have to go back to India and pick up ugly illerate people to marry because no quality person will marry them from here. Kiran: I don’t hate Akshay Kumar but he’s not one of my favourite actors.. he’s a good actor but wasting his talents over some comedy movies which never satisfy me.. the only comedy role which he did and I loved was his role in Singh is Kinng and his role in Bhool Bulaiya. How many movies Akshay did since he joined bollywood? More than 60 or 70 movies, but I can’t remember that he did some excellent ones except in the past 2 years. I loved Dadkarn, Aiteraz and Bewafa wasn’t bad, it was ok, but cc2c is a very bad movie.. I couldn’t tolerate watching it more than 10 minutes online and put it off.
And I’m not this type that if I love someone I would say that his movie is so good, but on this website, there’re lots of ppl who (know) that some of Akshay’s movies aren’t so good but they praise them and don’t want to say anything bad about them. My favourite is Shahrukh but yes.. I do admit and said already many times that Shahrukh too got some bad movies.. all bollywood actors did good and bad movies, but Shahrukh’s bad movies are only few.. we can say 7 out of 40only.. he’s been considered as the king of bollywood for over 12 years coz he’s doing a hit after a hit, most of his movies were so good, few were bad and his bad movies are old ones, did them at the starting of his career.

i dont know why therre is so much discussion going on here over a flop film .. luckily i was savwd the torture of watching this one .. pity for those who underwent extreme torture while watching this movie ..but those of you who tolerated dostana and drona in recent times may actually like this movie somewhat!!
Kiran: I didn’t watch Slumdog Millionaire yet, but I will 2day or tomorrow. I’m sure that the movie is so good, all the family members loved it.
Drona was a kids movie and a fantasy one and not even a comedy one.
Dostana was a high class comedy which overseas ppl loved and appreciated it ( no matter what the story was) 2 guys pretending that they’re gay.. nothing wrong with the script and the direction was great with nice songs, a funny movie which many ppl in our country saw twice in cinema and I did and still want to see it for the 3rd time on a dvd, even my son who’s not interested in indian movies and watch only hollywood or just one bollywood movie in a year ( and the last movie he saw was Umrao Jaan for Aish/Abhishek and he loved it) my son who doesn’t like bollywood comedy movies and never watch them, he says’s they’re some cheap comedy which don’t impress him at all.. he watched Dostana when he heard from everyone that this one is different and loved it, found it very funny.. and he watched it just because he knew that the producer is Karan Johar as he knows that he’s a good director/producer. Dostana wasn’t funny for some Indian ppl in India and the proof is that the movie was a successful one in India & overseas, but it was a very funny movie for us.
So what’s the connection between the 3 movies?! Drona, Dostana & cc2c?!!! No connection at all, each one was different. cc2c is not only a crap.. it’s one of the worst indian movies which I saw and 10 minutes watching was enough for me to judge it, and didn’t need to continue watching the whole, as I knew from that 10 minutes that the whole movie is a crap and a bad direction.. it’s a mistake which Akshay did, selecting a bad script, and he must be blamed for that as noone forced him to do it!
Fathiya: CCTC may be crap for u but it has many comic scene….There was no story but still akshay try his best in this film ..He had done all nicely and good acting.He have never played with Big banner jjust once in Tashan But other he havenot….SRK always play with Bigger banner so he is getting good story.AK always make smaller banner like priyadarsan,Vipul shah,Sajid Najidwala into good and hit ….
U have to believe that SRK is always think he is the best ……all his comment suggest us that……
All the haters of cc2c…..This is not a flop film. This movie earned 45 crores in first 5 days. Then how can u say its a flop? This movie is not the best of King kumar but its that bad….its a average movie. Fathiya u like the emotional movies thats why u like srk movies more. But Akshay is a full package of all the things. His action scenes and stunts are fabulous, His comedy is the best no one can match his comedy timing. And moreover he has given 5 hits in a row no one has give that much hits at a strech. then why u dont consider him a king of bollywood??
Sudeep: Akshay on an interview with Anupama Shahrma admitted why he doesn’t work with Yash Raj, Karan Johar films, he said they don’t pay him!! that’s the reason

I think we have all had enough discussion on this stupid movie. Hey Fathiya, I was really surprised to read you have a son. Oh that really explains your nice taste in movies, I myself am engaged to be married, and liking the kind of movies we do only comes as we mature with age, so just ignore the comments some people here are making, once they are older and more mature they will also appreciate the kind of movies we do, we all do change with time.
Hi Kiran: since I was 16 or 17 years old till today, I’m a mother of young girls and a young boy, I got the same taste for movies.. I’m just the same one and never changed by aging, I loved always good bollywood movies.. My favourite Indian movie was “Sangam” and till today, hundreds of bollywood good movies I saw but I still feel that Sangam is the best Indian movie which I saw and no movie is better than Sangam, no actor could perform the way Raj Kapoor did in Sangam while he was singing: Dost Dost Na Raha..no one except Amitab Bachan as well as Veejantiyamala, I loved her performance in the movie.
And about the ppl here, they neither like white nor black.. they’re some strange ppl!! that’s the only discreption which I can give them.. e.g. Punjabi Sher.. he swears, tells u the worst of bad language, then he keeps on communicating!! ( see his last comment on this page, where he’s asking me why I don’t consider Akshay as the King of Bollywood!) he must be ashmed of himself, but no.. these ppl aren’t ashamed at all, and he expects that I would reply!! not only that.. he threaten even if I don’t reply?!! which way actually these young boys really think.. Yeah sangam is a nice movie, and alot of old movies are really good, and I’ve pretty much been the same also myself.
