After the super successful Singh Is King, Akshay Kumar is back with Chandni Chowk to China produced by Warner Bros, one of the largest production houses in Hollywood. The film directed by Nikhil Advani (Kal Ho Na Ho, Salaam-e-Ishq) also stars Deepika Padukone and Ranvir Shorey along with Mithun Chakraborty in a cameo. Chinese Martial Arts actors Gordon Liu (Kill Bill) and Roger Yuan are also a part of the movie.
The pre release hype has been huge, with talks of Akshay Kumar turning into a global sensation and extending his fan-following further. Trade pundits believe, with decent word of mouth, Chandni Chowk To China can in fact beat the Rs 200 crores (worldwide gross) record set by Aamir Khan’s Ghajini in less than 3 weeks. Does Nikhil Advani – Akshay Kumar deliver? Or do they need to? Welcome, Singh Is Kinng and many other Akshay Kumar comedies, being mediocre at best, have worked big time at the box-office.
Sidhu (Akshay Kumar) is an uneducated naïve yet a superstitious man hailing in Chandni Chowk, Delhi. Despite the kicks and advises from his Dada (Mithun Chakroborty), down on his luck this vegetable cutter from the paranthe wali galli visits all possible saint’s, tarot reader’s and baba’s in search of any form of luck. Just when he had given up all hopes of getting something out of the luck charms to make his life, two men from China come in search of him claiming him to be the reincarnation of a war hero from the past and with an offer to take him to China. Sidhu blissfully sets forth to China with Guru Chopstick (Ranvir Shorey) who instigates dreams of a delicious future and forgets to reveal the menace which awaits him. He dreams of a wonderful life with his dream girl, who he calls Ms. TSM (Deepika Padukone), on his way to china. Will this clumpsy weak man live to the hopes of the villagers in fighting against evil and buy them their freedom?
Chandni Chowk To China Review
Akshay Kumar himself claimed recently that the movie lacks sense. Chandni Chowk To China not just lacks sense but rather has no story. Unfortunately, the movie is poorly directed and mostly filled with over the top performances. The first half is a complete drag; the pace is extremely slow and the film is completely dependent on Akshay Kumar and his by now trademark antics to carry it along. But watching his previous 10 odd back to back films with the very same mannerisms, it’s getting awfully hard to sit through.
The second half is better, the action is great but the climax is as flat as a cola without fizz. After all the build up, which consumes the entire second half, a thrilling climax is the least you can hope for. You expect it to be a serious combat between the good and the evil, but the director has instead opted to make it funny. Funny it is, but convincing; it isn’t.
The action is top class, going by the standards of Hindi films. Choreography is brilliant and the way Tere Naina is picturized is nice. The music is good, the Chandni Chowk To China Title song and the S.I.D.H.U track stands out.
Akshay Kumar is getting extremely repetitive with his characters. It’s the same as what you saw in many of his previous films. He’s hilarious at times but while you watch him perform, you get the seen-those-a-million-times-before kind of feeling. Why can’t a capable actor, commanding super popularity, with many talented directors eager to sign him on; attempt something different?
Deepika Padukone looks stunning and has put in a lot of effort into those action sequences. In a negative role, as a Chinese, Deepika is brilliant. Mithun Chakraborty is fine in a short role. The talented Ranvir Shorey disappoints. The Chinese actors are good!
Overall, for a movie that has been hyped as one of the biggest release of the year, it has about 2 – 3 funny scenes and a couple of good action sequences! That’s about it. If that’s good enough to spend your hard earned money on the film, go for it.
Finally, with a hope that Akshay starts experimenting with his roles and tries something different for a change, I go with 2 stars for Chandni Chowk to China. Disappointing!

Other Notes – The funniest thing about the film was the potato with the shape of the Hindu god Ganesha. Akshay somehow manages to hold on to it throughout the film. Bodies are broken, blood is shed, Akshay is thrown from the top of the Wall of China.. but through it all.. the potato manages to survive!
On a serious note, CCTC is strictly for Akshay Kumar fans, others stay far away. What really baffles me is, why doesn’t Akshay try something different? Why is he stuck with his same old successful formula? You might argue that the same movies are working big time at the box-office. I don’t deny that, but wouldn’t an actor love to have a movie like Taare Zameen Par, Chak De India or a Jodhaa Akbar in his filmography? Hope things change with Eight by Ten directed by Nagesh Kukunoor, which I believe could be Akshay’s best movie in a long long time!! Fathiya, I can point out several flaws in Lagaan (story wise). And your wrong, Lagaan is completely Ashutosh Gowariker’s story. Its 100% imagination. Nothing of what you saw in Lagaan happened in real!
Ghajini too is a story! You cant expect all movies to be real! Lets take movies like the classic Terminator 2 (Hollywood film starring Arnold) for example. Can something like that happen in real? Its all about the script and the way its executed.

Indicine Team: even if Lagaan wasn’t based on a true story, but the movie is convincing ( there’s no idotic action scenes which you’d say while watching “it’s a very filmi scene” and not that u tell yourself either: now that won’t happen in reality, to see someone stabbed with a big rod and he still gets up and fight!
Terminator, Jurrasic Park, Batman, Superman, Catwoman, E.T. and sience fictions e.g. alien’s movies and some stupid horror movies which hollywood make nowadays.. these all would go under some (fantasy) movies ( and in fantasy movies we can’t say why this happend? how could this happen) I mean we can’t compare movies like Koi Mel Gaya, Krrish & Drona with Ghajini or RBNDJ can we?
And when some directors do some drama & serious movies, they’ve to give the audience what’s convincing.. what make them believe that this or that might happen, not giving scenes which ruin the whole movie!

Some stupidist movies won oscar awards in the past years and I was always asking myself: why? Why didn’t they select any indian movie as there were many good movies which worth oscar, specially this year, as I mentioned above. And.. why do u think Slumdog Millionaire won at the Golden Globe awards? I’ts because the director is British and the film was made by them, hollywood prodcued the movie, therefore it won, but if this movie was done by the hands of indian director/producer and with the same quality, they’d have turned their back and never even watched it or loved it or considered it as a great one as they do now!
Well have been reading many comments here .. To tell u the fact I find that Indicine teams and my opinion are quite similar on almost all movies .. CC2C is a crap movie .. I believe that this movie will act as an eye opener for Akshay .. he has so much potential but he is type casting himself like Govinda .. This movie shows that he is more attracted towards comedy than towards action these days .. The concept was really nice but the director screwed the movie big time .. and I dont think Akshay will be able to save this movie .. Hope he learns a lesson from this movie .. A married woman, sharing the same roof with her husband, fails to recognize him when they meet outdoors because he is without his moustache .. This is a fundamental scripting flaw in the film .. All else may be excused .. the many convenient coincidences, the forced song-and-dance sequences .. Shah Rukh’s improbable triumph over a Sumo wrestler, and so on .. But how do you get around the idea of a woman not recognizing her husband during daytime .. especially when he has Shah Rukh Khan’s nose and dimples .. Yet, the audience has no problem in lapping up the absurdity .. Sometimes if the masala fillm is well made it is acceptable but not every time .. With all the negative reviews i went into the theatre without any expectations….
This movie is classic example of poor direction & screenplay. The director has ruined a decent story into a crap movie. I mean he has mixd up everything ahherrr…can u imagine a man wanting to take revenge for the murder of a very loved one, still acts like a funny guy, i dont understand wat exactly the CCTC team thinking abt, and to add to that the action scenes which were supposed to b the +ves were made funny, wat rubbish kindof a revenge is that.
u knw guys u shud take the interview of AK very seriously, i remember he saying “my kid said its a cartoon movie” and he saying its a mindless comedy.
man… Nikhil Advani spoiled wat cud hav been a good movie even though it had elements of many films.
I just dont understand wat was Ramesh Sippy thnking while investing on this film.
Wel the movie had some good scenes though the lottery ticket, scene inside the plane, fight sequences.
hmm…Akshay has to blame for himself to do this movie with one of the mega immature director Nikhil Advani.

well, just got back from watching the film at my local cinema.
i couldn’t wait to get my comments in about the film. so i made myself a cup of hot chocolate horlicks, and 3 buttered fried crumpets and then came and sat by the computer, eating away, with the warm fire burning behind me.
first of all, i must say the film is NOT as bad as the critics and reviewers make it out to be. not at all. after reading so many bad reviews of the film , i thought the film would be a total bore and a complete waste of money and time. but fortunately, it was not that bad. honestly.
the film is quite entertaining and different from a ‘normal’ bollywood film you see. it is more like a foreign film in the category of films like ‘kung fu hustle’, ‘hero’, ‘crouching tiger hidden dragon’, etc.
and that explains why most bollywood people or indian people in general may not have liked it.
if you watch films like ‘kung fu hustle’ you will see that these types of films are zany martial arts comedies, which a lot of the times dont make any sense. but they are still very fun and entertaining to watch.
CCTC is a similar film. its a zany fast paced martial arts comedy mayhem, and indeed it does have some good comedy moments in it, that makes the audience laugh out loud.
i can guarantee that the majority of the western audience will love it, especially the goras (white people).
the best way to look at CCTC, when you are watching it, is to imagine you are watching a hollywood martial arts film, and then you will enjoy it.
the film from start to finish is quite entertaining and enjoyable – it radiates this positive energy which keeps you feeling happy, even though some of the scenes are silly. it is far better than the usual bollywood movie that you see,. it may not be great, but it is definately worth a watch, it will keep you entertained despite its flaws.
the film could have been great and a big blockbuster. so why will it not be ? simply because the director has put in a few really silly scenes in the film that were totally unnecessary. they actually spoiled the film – which in general could have turned out to be a really good film. its those silly scenes that made the audience groan and not take the film seriously.
from what i could see from the reaction of the audience, the were generally enjoying it, until those silly scenes came up which changed the mood of the audience. the audience will then think ‘this is silly’, and thier mood about the film would change. even if the rest of the film is enjoyable, their mood would have already been spoilt. so, those few silly scenes actually spoiled the film. and that is entirely the directors fault. those scenes were not necessary, and could have been avoided. it makes you think, did the director not realise this ? surely he must have ? it was so obvious. how could he allow those scenes in the film ? any normal person with average intelligence would have known those scenes were silly and not needed.
the director really spoilt it. otherwise the film would have been a really good film.
the silly scenes iam talking about are:
the ‘advert’ scenes – totally unnecessary and could have been avoided or done in a different way.
the scene were deepika padukones meow meow character tries to seduce akshay by singing to old bollywood songs – not properly developed. she just bursts out in song all of a sudden ! and when did she learn the songs and hindi ??
the scene when akshay decides to go from chandni chowk to china – happened all of a sudden. not properly told.
the end scene – the climax. so short and abruptly silly. how can this powerful villain be humbled with just a few punches and without an awesome big fight ?
apart from these so called silly scenes, the film is actually quite good and something different from the usual bollywood stuff. it is a time pass masala potbolier, which is a good night out for anyone fancy going to the cinemas. you will not find it boring at all.
but even though the film has a few silly scenes, why are people and the critics saying negative things about it , and trashing the film ?? if i remember correctly the recently released RNBDJ had a lot of silly scenes in it and was flawed in many ways, so was the earlier singh is kinng.
so i cannot understand why the critics are trashing CCTC when they didn’t do the same for RNBDJ or singh is kinng.
CCTC is better than these two films in some aspects.
i believe the main reason why the film is not doing WELL AT THE BOX OFFICE is because it has been released at a very bad time. most people have already spent thier monies and had a good time and enjoyed themselves at the cinemas during the christmas and new year festive period. so they are in no mood to do so again or go to the cinemas now. at this time the majority of the people are settling in getting back to work, family life etc. and cannot be bothered to go to the cinema and see a film in hoard loads.
so it is a bad time to release a film. that is, i beleive, the main reason why the opening of the film was not that good and has not broken any records, and why the film is not fairing too well at the box office.
also, there are two other reasons why the film may not do well in the days to come:
– the critics have trashed the film, the reviewers have given bad reviews. so most people will be influenced by this and not go and see the film, which will contribute to the films further downfall.
but thats a shame because the film is actually is not that bad.
– it is a western style kung fu film, which may not appeal much to the indian public or family orientated people.
acting wise –
i think akshay is tops.
but i personally felt that the connection akshay had with mithun chakraborty in the film was very strong. thier bond in the film was good. it worked and was really emotional. you can tell that the two respect each other very much.
you can tell they have a strong relationship off screen as well, that came across on screen. akshay used to look up to mithun as a mentor in his early days as a struggling actor. that relationship comes across on screen. the akshay-mithun angle worked and was very emotional. also mithunda was the towering figure in the film.
oh, and watch out for mithuns cult song ‘iam a disco dancer’ which is played in the film !
apart from akshay, i felt that the chinese actor that played deepikas father in the film did really well. his acting was good. especially for a chinese guy who does not speak hindi at all, he acted really well. it came across really well.
deepika padukones acting was as expected. nothing spectacular. but for me, she was the usp of the film !
she looks sooooo hot !!! and so sexy !! in fact it has been such a long time since i have seen such a sexy and hot lady on screen. she is seriously really delicious !!
for all the male members, you really need to go and see deepika in this film, she looks bewitchingly beautiful, and i guarantee your hearts will go flatter and you WILL fall in love. the way to describe her is:
uska hoth gulabi hai, nain sharaabi hai, husn qayamat ka….!
i swear i could have eaten deepika like a gulab jaman, if she was in front of me !
so, for the male audience, you need to go and see the film for deepika alone !
like the americans would say ‘she isn’t just hot, she is smokin hot !!’
like the indians would say ‘she is sooo damn hot yaaar !’
and like us cockney british would say ‘she is ‘it’ ‘ and ‘lovely jubbley!’
anyway, my feelings aside. the FILM IS DEFINATELY WORTH A WATCH. IT IS NOT AS BAD AS THE CRITICS ARE SAYING.
IT IS ENTERTAINING AND DEFINATELY A COMPLETE PAISA WASOOL. DEFINATELY WORTH THE TICKET PRICE. LEAVE YOUR BRAINS BEHIND AND GO AND ENJOY THIS POTBOILER. DONT THINK JUST ENJOY THE MAYHEM, IGONORE 1 OR 2 SILLY SCENES.

Some of the movie which i hate are:Love story2050,Deshdrohi,Mangal pandey,Om shanti om,Dil se,dev das , kuch kuch hota hey…….since i donot like SRK that time so and all film of SRK……But i appeciate his acting…he is great acting but I hate him…… HE made Salman angry…I have watch the interview of SRK in IBN 7 and their he said he had done mistake and ask sorry for that…This clearly show that Fight was happen due to SRK….It is easy to say sorry after doing such cheap thing

i did’t see cc2c yet,but i want to say to all please dont compare Akshay with srk & Amir bcoz both are (Srk & Amir ) proved himself in industry since last 10 to 15 years. And Akshay is doing well since last 2 years. Akshay is doing good these days no dought,my well wishes is with him but srk & Amir are doing much better than him still for example (RBDJ & Ghajini) Blockbuster. In short, King ya Ikka banne k Liye Dilli Abhi Door Hai.

I don’t like ching chung wang movies.. those stupid chinesee movies or jackie chan’s movies.. u love them..so love them. who cares.. I love shahrukh’s movies, I adore shahrukh ( and it doesn’t mean that I hate Akshay.. no)
I’ve repeated this hundred of times on this website.. Akshay is a good actor, talented, but he’s using all his efforts in some cheap comedy movies, he needs to (develop) to the best.. if Akshay Kumar tries so in future, he will win my respect and I will consider him as one of the top best 5 bollywood actors, and if he’ll continue doing these crap.. so..sorry Punjabi Sher, I’d say: No.
Akshay got some big opportunities now to do some great movies but unfortunately he’s not taking these chances.. he said (himself) on NDTV channel: “Haa.. main Bakwas film kar raha hu” and then he said to others:enjoy bakwas movies!!! I wish that he just think of other audiences who hates bakwas movies, and one of them is (me). I love comedy but a high class one, I loved the comedy scenes in RBNDJ, Bachna Aeh Hasino & Ghaajini, and Akshay has to learn from Shahrukh, Aamir & from Ranbir and follow their steps.
And P. Sher: Critics slammed cc2c, they didn’t like it and gave it 2/5 rating.

RNBJ was bakwas movie of 2008.sharuk doing same kind of cheep romantic movies with his uncule Yash chopra .same story .same music.
akshay is 100% better than him .he done evry thing on his own power .with out Yash raj .karan johar or any other big banners .that’s way he is a self made super star

.I love the bollywood movie..Firstly,One which is comedy and fun film……And then If movie is said well by critic i will watch it……..I m not a Hindustani…I m Nepali….I reallly fill That some of the bollywood movies is good….Rather than my Nepali movie….I have upto now 3-4 nepalese film till date……..I hope Bollywood industry will give more and more good film………But i hate the copy film of bollywood >they just copy film from hollywood,Korean movie..One negative Factor……………………………I like Akshay kumar since he is one the best man in bollywood industry….>I know CCTC will not be loved by crictic>>>since i have read in magzine of one person i forget name have predict that akshay kumar will give many flop or cheap film this year….They have said that next coming film Kambatt Ishq will do good job in box office and So housefull…Only these movie are hope for Akshay kumar this year….I want him to push the release date of Dann danna dann Since it is his first production film SO it will be badly trash this year,,,,,But still Even Cheap film of Akshay kumar i will watch >……..I like his role in Tashan only his role in that movie………………….All the best AK u rock this bollywood
