Question: Can Shahrukh Khan’s Happy New Year beat Salman Khan’s Kick at the box office?
Answer: This has to be the most asked question in the last couple of the weeks – our inbox has literally been flooded with the same question. Prior to release, Happy New Year seemed like it had more than a decent chance of crossing the 233-crore business of Kick.
But with the film dropping Monday onwards, it won’t be easy. In fact, Kick could already be out of reach. In 5 days, Happy New Year has collected around 137 crore. In the same number of days, Kick had collected 10 crore less (127 cr). But on the following two days, Kick collected Rs 21.66 cr (Wednesday) and Rs 15.4 cr (Thursday) due to Eid, taking its first week total to Rs 164.21 cr. Happy New Year is likely to fall short of the first week total of Kick by around 4 crore.
The Salman Khan starrer showed fantastic growth in business in its second weekend too – 9.22 cr, 10.62 cr and 14.16 cr. Happy New Year has to better that to have any chance of going past Kick, which looks unlikely at this stage due to drops from Monday.
Interestingly, for a film that was expected to be the 3rd biggest grosser of the year after HNY and PK, Kick could well remain the highest grosser of the year by the end of 2014 if PK doesn’t live upto its sky-high expectations.

I know it isnt quite possible with big films because the opening is too big. But then we cant ignore the fact that Rajkumar Hirani has an unprecedented record with all his 3 films managing to collect way huge than expected.
But I think that the nude scene will really hamper business of pk in single screen.
@gj007 @indicine: When i saw PK teaser in the theatre,they removed few seconds of aamir carrying transistor and just showed his upper body…that was really digusting to see..this one of the most creative step in indian cinema but this ridiculous censor board have chopped it …

Guys, wait for HNY to end its run. But if you’re that desperate, please remind me of bhai’s Jai Ho.
And for that case, what about Kick which ended up with a lifetime total of merely 6cr more than CE after a years gap. Don’t forget that bhai was the last superstar to enter the 200cr club, even behind HR, and he also had more releases as compared to SRK, Aamir and HR. Lets not even mention the streak of disasters he has behind him before he stepped into the category of no-brainers. With a new release, SRK, Aamir and even HR are expected to top the spots, but bhai is only expected to do good. When did bhai have the highest grosser ever in the near past? Never. It was 3 idiots, CE, Krrish:3 and Dhoom:3 for that matter. An underperformance from bhai means 111cr. An underperformance from King Khan means at least 200cr! That is one big difference!
gi007- i dnt think that nude scene can put any effect on single screen but alien oriented movie cant accepted by single screen audience. i was just against of that scene cuz they published it in a news paper without any think about middle and lower class family. i am sure even aamir fans cant show this poster to their own families.

Ranbir’s YJHD had the best WOM among the big films in last few years…
I think it still has chances to beat kick because 3rd week has THe SHAUKEENS whereas kick had ITS ENTERTAINMENT..but a weekend of 30 plus is required

Today again the film dropped by 20%, thus collections are expected to be at around 10 – 10.5 crore.
The film looks like collecting some where between 200-210 crores life time or less than that.

@Kingshuk, Yes some Salman fans expected 300 Crores from Kick. Even, Indicine wrote an article on that. Hence, In that sense, it underperformed. But u know what Indicine gave it the verdict of ATBB & BOI did BB. Above all, it is a great bounce back by Salman who came back on screen just after six months of an under performer jai ho.
And Babaji ka thullu and his mates expected 250 crores from bang bang.
Coming to your king’s movie, we can excuse you for expecting to cross 300 Crores or saying of doing so was a cakewalk. But it will fail to beat Kick despite having everything in its advantage. Hit Khan will have another Hit. That’s all.

Second weekend will give more clear picture that whether it will cross kick or no..but I guess happy new year did not get that kind of appreciation like kick..
Whatever it is, lifetime collections always depends on content and hence there is no denying fact that happy new year collected more than jai ho and kick opening day combined just like ek tha tiger had collected more than ra.one and don2 opening day figures..it clearly shows that a huge superstar with a big holiday release and a universal appealing movie will always open to earth shattering numbers
May cross 3 Idiots – so Srk fans should be contained n happy that Srk is the only actor to cross 3 Idiots twice but sadly will finish on 3rd (most probably PK will overtake Kick) or 2nd (rare scenario for that PK need to fail bog time) !!!!!!!!! why u all trying to be hardcore fan of only one actor and abusing others, is it impossible just to ehjoy watching each actors(salman,srk,aamir,hrithik) movies. I watched all their movies, from mnpk, baazigar, qsqt and knph to hny,kick, d3 and bb. I never become fan of any of these actors, but i became fan of indian movies cuz of them. And i dont understand u indian audience, that u each time try to trash some of them, though u all know they all r legends.

Salman has given 2 highest grossers of a decade, Most number of highest grossers of the year, 4 of movies on top among top 6 highest grosser of 1999 year. Since Dabangg, 5 back to back Blockbusters, 7 100 crs movies again consecutive. He could have manipulated 4-5 crores to show 3 Idiots record broken with ETT but he didnt do it unlike Srk who manipulated few lakhs CE opening day to beat ETT opening day record. Now be satisfy with opening & weekend Lifetime mein Srk will end up 2nd or 3rd. Since last 7 years Srk struggling to give top grosser of the year despite months of promotions. Srk tried copying Salman but cannot give consecutive Blockbusters even with Masala genre forget about 5 back to back Blockbusters !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, I agree 300 crores did look possible at the time of the opening and the release size, but now finishing below 250 looks likely! And again, my point to you – it’s just 6 days of it’s release – I haven’t heard literally bad from anyone here in my circle apart from what I have been reading from you guys, the comments here! Still, the movie has 2 weeks to run, my advise is to wait and see and give it a chance, the movie is bad or not, it’s a different thing. When some of the pathetic movies have done well in India, why can’t this (I am still yet to see it). Don’t just be blind and support your idol. This might be a waste advise to you if you not try and understand. I hope you would give this a thought. Be patient. And I feel, it would just go past KICK. Cheers mate!
