Question: Can Shahrukh Khan’s Happy New Year beat Salman Khan’s Kick at the box office?
Answer: This has to be the most asked question in the last couple of the weeks – our inbox has literally been flooded with the same question. Prior to release, Happy New Year seemed like it had more than a decent chance of crossing the 233-crore business of Kick.
But with the film dropping Monday onwards, it won’t be easy. In fact, Kick could already be out of reach. In 5 days, Happy New Year has collected around 137 crore. In the same number of days, Kick had collected 10 crore less (127 cr). But on the following two days, Kick collected Rs 21.66 cr (Wednesday) and Rs 15.4 cr (Thursday) due to Eid, taking its first week total to Rs 164.21 cr. Happy New Year is likely to fall short of the first week total of Kick by around 4 crore.
The Salman Khan starrer showed fantastic growth in business in its second weekend too – 9.22 cr, 10.62 cr and 14.16 cr. Happy New Year has to better that to have any chance of going past Kick, which looks unlikely at this stage due to drops from Monday.
Interestingly, for a film that was expected to be the 3rd biggest grosser of the year after HNY and PK, Kick could well remain the highest grosser of the year by the end of 2014 if PK doesn’t live upto its sky-high expectations.

@tiger: Equal ratings doesn’t mean equal quality or content. If you want to give 1.8/5 to a film,then you have to give 2/5 as the scale rating. Similarly, if you want to give 2.2/5 to a film, you have to give it 2/5 as a scale rating. So just because i gave them same rating doesn’t mean i found them equal in terms of content. I feel my “review” for kick was a bit over-strict compared to Hny,BangBang,jai ho,SR reviews and I admit my faults. But i am stick to my 2/5 rating for kick. I feel my rating for kick was what I wanted to give. But my writing of kick review was a bit over-strict.

I agree with both of you. I completely missed ZNMD and YJHD here. Special 26 had a decent WOM but these 2 films managed to emerge as big successes. Special 26 though is my favorite Akki film in recent times. It was extremely witty and the climax was fantastic. Same with ZNMD. It was a brilliant movie!

I do feel we underestimate our audience. 3 idiots also had a fair amount of toilet humor and risky issues like suicide by a student (If you remember there were protests by some politicians to remove that Joy Lobo scene from the film) Still the movie emerged as a blockbuster. So I’m not really sure how people are gonna react to pk. Hope for the best!

Interesting debate. I have a different perspective though.
TZP and 3 idiots were “expected’ to be multiplex movies. I would say TZP is still very much a multiplex movie. But 3 idiots has had a very massy impact. I have actually heard people debating about education system while the movie was running full house. In a funny and light-hearted way the movie has reached many people. Hirani himself admitted that he received lakhs of mails from various parents and how they realized they were putting unnecessary pressure on their children. So we cant rub off these two classics as “intelligent cinema”. They made a strong impact.
Talking about Salman Khan, he himself admits he is not here to preach. His core aim is to entertain the audience and he does that in a grand way. Salman in his own way tries to contribute to the society through massy entertainers and “Being Human foundation”. I used to bash Salman khan for his infamous 2002 case. Though that case is still a mystery I have researched a lot about his charity and boy, that guy has genuinely helped many people!
Comparisons are futile. If these 2 biggies can put their differences aside and be the best buddies of bollywood, their fans can at least accept each others contribution to the Indian cinema.
HA…HA…Happy New Year will never cross 200 crores for sure. As the film had no content, no music, bad direction and bad performances from all actors except Abhisek Bacchan.
HNY is trending like TEES MAAR KHAN and presently Bang Bang.
There are only two SUPER KING KHANS in Bollywood, They are king Salman and King Aamir.

For me, Aamir is the king of intelligent cinema! Meanwhile, Salman is the king of entertainment. SRK, Aamir, Akki, Ajay all admitted that. Salman’s stardom is bigger than Aamir. Aamir too says this. Meanwhile, Aamir’s strength is his choice of script, hardwork and marketing knowledge! Accept the facts as they are.
When a reporter asked him if he would do any issue based film like Aamir does. He replied “if anyone comes to me with an issue based script, I will ask him to go to Aamir.”
And during the release of Jai Ho, an audience said “Salman is an entertainment hero. Why does he need to make movies like this?” So, one can feel what audiences expect from him. Indian audiences are stereotypic. Hence, one can’t blame Salman for not doing 3 Idiots kinda movie. You all know he has even rejected Chakde India.
Yes, 3 Idiots has made a big impact on how people think about education system. In the same vein, HAHK has made a big impact on Indian Wedding Traditions!
@gj007 – love you bro for mention me. 3 idiot also has many loopholes like when aamir, raaju and others went to raaju’s home they showed poority of raaju but aamir and maddy still concentrate their mind on their food. is this a humanity thing. i was learning similar school which aamir showed in 3 idiots years ago in 2004 in shikshantar udaipur (rajasthan) so dnt think it was aamir idea. he just played his role. they can make a highest grosser movie on a sucide of student but they are not interested to make a movie on farmers sucide who have same pressure on mind by currupt govt’s policies. but 3 idiot is an entertaining movie but still i said lack of mass feelings. visit to near villages and talk with them only after you can understand what are real needs of poors. jai ho.

If we talk about 3 idiots and that particular scene I must confess, it is what they call “dark humour”
IF you have seen Jaane bhi do yaaro you will get that humor. Aamir had admitted that this particular scene was a new flavor of cinema. You see they poke fun at Raju’s poverty but always stand by him in tough times. It was a scene where you can neither laugh nor cry. A mixed emotion kind of a scene.
And of course 3 idiots has its own flaws. But because I’m an engineering student it did “connect” with my world. Just like Salman movies connect with you.
And Aamir had infact produced ‘peepli live’ which talked about suicides of farmers. But it was again a dark satire which mocked reaity in a very crude way. If you didnt like that particulat scene from 3 idiots you should avoid peepli live.

@ anand original- unfortunately hahk made big impact on indian wedding tradition cuz peoples started very costly marriage after that and i want to tell a hit dialouge from the movie ‘prem rog’- ye reeti riwaz tum thakuro jaise bade logo ke ghar se shuru hote hain lekin bhugtna hum garibo ko padta hai – this tradition starts from ur rich families but we poor families pay for it. hope people learn how to love and joy with family from movie not tradition cuz i heard many peoples sell their home for daughters marriage in villages.
