Box Office Verdict of Dilwale?

Continuation of #AskIndicine QnA. Read More

Q. Though Bajirao Mastani might have won the clash domestically. Still Dilwale is far more profitable than Bajirao. Don’t you think verdict of Dilwale will be same as Bajirao Mastani?

A. Verdicts are confusing these days, not just for the people who follow collections and verdicts, but even for us.. because there are so many factors involved. In today’s times, there is tremendous pressure on websites like us and even trade analysts to be more lenient. Verdicts are no longer strict. Trade analysts like Komal Nahta (Film Information, ETC) used to be very strict when it came to verdicts before, but now even they follow official collections and verdicts. One of the reasons for this is to create perception that a film starring a big actor hasn’t failed and two, there is pressure from fans – which has only increased because of social media.

In olden times, verdicts used to given purely on the basis of recovery of domestic distributors. If that’s the case, Dilwale is a FLOP in India. There are no two ways about this. Shah Rukh Khan sold territories for a high price to distributors and some of them haven’t even recovered half of their investment. Rajasthan distributor, who paid 8.5 crore for the film, will lose about 4.5 crore of his investment. The verdict simply does not matter. The trade knows the truth and that is, Dilwale has failed in the domestic market. The same applies to even a film like Jai Ho.

For Shah Rukh Khan, the producer, Dilwale is a hugely profitable film. The overseas share could be as high as 65 crore plus and that along with satellite rights, he would have recovered his investment. Recovery from domestic, music and everything else are his profits – which all combined could be close to Rs 100 crore. But these profits come at a cost of local distributors suffering huge losses. In other words, Dilwale would have been profitable for Shah Rukh Khan even if it collected 10 crore in India or didn’t release at all.

Since Dilwale has done blockbuster business in the overseas markets, it’s final overall verdict would be Above Average or Semi Hit in the best case.

On the other hand, since you ask about Bajirao Mastani, the film is a profitable venture for everyone involved. No one will lose money. The simple reason for this is, Bajirao Mastani has over-performed both in overseas and domestic markets. It has exceeded expectations wherever it has released. Dilwale has only performed well overseas.

  • any film because of which any producer, distributor or exhibitor lose money can and should NEVER be termed as semi hit, hit etc

Term HIT can only be used where everyone is commercially not at a loss and make some money. No matter what sorta pressure is there, trade should be honest with their verdicts.

I credit Indicine team for using the word FLOP here. But then again because of the pressure u end by saying that overall it can be called average or semi hit. In an ideal world there would be no such pressures!

  • the film did good only because of the jodi of Shahrukh and Kajol, not because the film is “special”.. it’s because the Indian audience was waiting for more than 15 or 17 years to see them together on the screen… so.. that’s the reason, otherwise the film is only a pastime, the stupid comedy scenes just ruined the film.. and I was really surprised that how Shahrukh Khan agreed that the director would add those stupid scenes in his film and he didn’t reject them as a superstar!!!! I wish if he just edit him film and filter it from those crap scenes, then the film could be considered as a decent past time.

  • @sky:
Ashok said nothing against Aamir. why are you showing so much anger for Salman??? And trying to please srk fans??? Why are you pretending yourself a so called neutral guy???

We know Jai Ho is a failure. But what is the need of giving so long lecture on it??? We have also seen many Aamir fans giving excuses for talash’s failure (even u). Every fan base try to defend their stars failures. What’s wrong in it???

  • @sem if Aamir 2-4 film success is nothing than why I even termed srk a star when his films from last 7 years were struggling on festive occasions. Mnik was a non-holiday bit sold to distributers with record prices. Since RNBDJ to Dilwale, its only CE which justified to give srk a festive release slot, except that all were hits which can’t be a hit if were non-holidays simple. So it’s 6 from last 7 films. And you still comparing aamir with srk in these present situation. Beta accept the fact and move on. Srk was ahead to Aamir till 2004, after that Aamir always beaten him with Mangal pandey> paheli, Fanna & RDB >> Don & Kank.
Let’s not even compare the post Ghajini era.
BTW we gave already discussed the same over the times, so no need to start this ahead. So better to both of us that we stop to tag each other in our comments. Good night.

  • The struggle of Dilwale in India can be seen with biggest circuit like Mumbai & Delhi up circuit collection. 33cr from Mumbai till 2nd week when top films collecting 60-70cr from there. CE was at 68cr and dilwale clearly half. So if film performed that poor in biggest circuit than how can be it is profit making for Mumbai distributes. Answer me guys. An srk koi ranveer Singh to h nahi Jo uski film Ka business itna hi accept karenge biggest circuit me. Keep it simple.
Though I still think Dilwale will be awarded clean hit on basis of superb overseas performance like mnik & kank.

  • @indicine how much need to declare Dilwale clean hit at your pridiction you mantion 150cr n Dilwale can achieve it

  • abhay tere aamir ko bol hny & dilwale jaise movie bana phir pata chalega ki ketni fan following hai

  • @bharat if bm can get to 170 crs with 1800 screens without superstar power then 225 with 2800 to bahut kam hai

  • blockbusters/hits of srk which were actually really good were: chak de india, ddlj,ka, kkhh, k3g, rnbdj, dtph and baazigar…

  • come on indicine say what is true.. call spade a spade.. dilwale is a flop as simple as that.. verdict of a film has nothing to do with overseas collections or producer’s profit.. it has to do with domestic collections n the distributor’s profit.. n I find it very lame whenever u talk about any srk film u bring in things like overseas collections, satellite rights, music rights n blah blah blah.. from when does verdicts matter on these things.. the same happened during ra.one.. even u didn’t have any clue about its verdict.. u were trying to justify its hit verdict with lame excuses like overseas collections, satellite rights, music rights blah blah blah.. as far as I know n understand trade the verdict relies solely on domestic collections n distributor’s profit.. if dilwale is not declared a flop then u will have to include these overseas collections, satellite rights, music rights etc etc for other films n actors too.. but the simple fact is that DILWALE IS A FLOP

  • Now tell how Dilwale have less budget compared to Ra.One ? Dilwale have immense action scene, nowadays vfx are costlier than 2011. you can’t give excuse like Ra.One had srk fee bcz Ra.One was also a RCE’s product. SRK was not on world tour for Ra.one but he did for Dilwale. World Tour, Dubai Tour, London Tour and many tours and still lower budget than RA.one ? Salman haven’t did any tour for BB but still P&A cost for BB and Dilwale are Same ? How ?
I think they are hiding Dilwale’s budget to save film from failure means they don’t want Flop tag on Dilwale. How Dilwale have less budget than BB ?
This time you can’t make fool to Peoples bcz BB was of Salman Khan Production so there is no chance of salman taking fee for BB.
Truth is that SRK the biggest lier. He is the Cheater.
Salman or akshay or anyone makes Remakes and they reveals it in public but many time srk Make fool, OSO was remake of Karz (Rishi Kapoor) but he haven’t told to anyone bcz he was cheating public. RBDJ was remake of Far From Heaven but he was again cheating. leave my opinion you all tell me which is better Official Remake or Chori wala Remake (Cheated Remake).
And Indicine plz post this comment.

  • @senile sem

Calling ghajini anything other than an ATBB warrants a full psychiatric assessment- admit yourself ASAP

  • @11:57pm

When your wife is Complan Boy then I wouldnt go around bragging about being well educated in english considering the nonsense that awaits you every night upon your arrival home…!

  • @Bolly Fan, You r right. PRDP was released in more number of screen than HNY. PRDP’s ticket price was higher than HNY and occupancy was aslo same. but PRDP failed to beat HNY on Opening day. Now @Indicine you tell me, then how HNY collected 45 crs with less screen and ticket price compared to PRDP ?
and whereas PRDP collected only 42 crs ?

SRK fans use this logic to show Salman lower than SRK. but the actual scene of HNY comes in Place.
Now @Indicine you should also accept this truth that RCE manipulated nearly 9 crs on Opening day of HNY.
and plz don’t forget to post this comment.

  • These Salman and Aamir Khan are so dumb, what a fools. About Dilwale:

    1. Mega Clash
    2. 2800 screens
    3. Ban in 5 states
    4. Planned Protests
    5. 1000 shows cancelled
    6. Negative reviews and bad WOM

Still more than 290 crore worldwide

ONE MAN STANDING TALL AGAINST ALL ODDS

THAT IS WHY HE IS THE UNDISPUTED NR.1

  • As an srk fan and admirer i personally feel that srk is made only for something great. not for films. I want to see him in some other platform. I love seeing srk off screen rather than on screen. but if srk would do quality films like swadesh then of course i will watch his quality film on big silver screen. I am very excited about fan.

  • Why are SRK haters getting hyper? Don’t they know that box office records after 45 years of age are irrelevant, these moch the young actors and the industry eg Ready, Ra.One, Bodyguard, ETT, CE, Dhoom 3, PK, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Say no to >45yearwale box office record and only yes to content.

  • did you notice one thing in dilwale!!??

while everyone was overacting and mouthing stupid dialogues kajol going..nanananaaanaaah

johny lever going ballistic varun Dhawan hamming srk was showing gross seriousness as if he had told Shetty that brother do all stupidity with others but don’t make me part of it so that people at the end do not blame me for being part of moronic street activity!!

but I guess he has to pay for others mistakes and he passed the final product so he is as much part of the loss as others .. he has also lost the good will and love of the fans for making such a dud and believing that his fans are morons!!

  • If thats the case then no khan can never give a flop
Even akshay’s film should be called a Blockbuster
Roy and Tamasha should be given a verdict of Super Hit
    Producers rarely have a loss
Its distributors who have a big loss
We all know Ra one,my name is khan were flop at domestic BO
    And if distributors don’t matter
    Prdp was blockbuster
    Kick all time blockbuster
    Ek tha tiger atbb
    Bajirao mastani should be blockbuster
Even happy new year would be a blockbuster
Stop defending the flop films of srk

  • I don’t understand how salman was bigger than srk in 90s, srk had 2 atbb and his movie was more memorable than salman’s crap movies, only one stood out of salman’s film is kamoshi and HDDCS, both heroine dominated films, saajan, HAHK were just box office success but were not great classics like srk’s baazigar, darr, KKHH, ddlj, srk ruled 90s because most of his blockbuster film he was the main hero, he didn’t play second fiddle to other heroes or heroines whilst salman was second fiddle to sanjay dutt, sunny deol in jeet.

  • @ sky i m not saying from my pocket…its written at what is a hit in boi where everything is explain but it againts amir so u just not gone to understand…

Even indicine ignore to read then what can u expect from poor amir fan…there clearly suggest the screen size shows the how big a film is ???

While here indicine have no paramrter…

  • Ghajini which was sold for 90 crs done just 114 crs business at the box office with a distributor share of around 60 crs was declared All time blockbustor by our trade pundits..
Some fools are saying if ghajini was an above avg film then ddlj, kkhh,ce were flops.. really? Ddlj budget was 4 crs and did 60 crs business, kkhh budget was 8 rs and did 48 crs business domestically.. so if a movie did a business of 10 to 15 times more than its budget are flops as per some bhaitards.. thats bhai logic for you..

  • @ Indicine Sem is Right. Boxoffice india article clearly shows that Domestic verdict =Distributor share / screen. I have cross checked that formula using excel sheet for movies released in 2015 and 2014. example Jai Ho January 2014 distributor share= 58 Crore Screens= 4000 Per screen count= 14,645 Verdict = Semi Hit …(althogh all circuit distributors in india and overseas lost heavily) …applying same formula on Dilwale distributor share= 72 Crore Screens= 3000 Per screen count= 24,000 Verdict = Hit

  • INDICINE SAID The problem these days is kids who have zero understanding about trade, discuss box office. BLOCBUSTER COMMENT OF NEW YEAR 2016.
ALL ACTOR R GAINER & ALL FANS R LOOSER. WAITING FOR FAN, RAEES, SULTAN, DANGAL, MOHENJADARO

  • Why don’t you plainly say it’s a flop?? no need to make twisting to state the truth. The verdict of a film has always been based on the collection from locals. If distributors in India suffered losses, then it’s simply a flop film. This has always been the case for every film, no need to change for this one. No producer suffer any losses, therefore, what SRK earned or did not earn doesn’t count to the fact that it’s a flop film. It is indeed a flop film.

  • Good news for all Shah Rukh fans! Dilwale to hit Mangalore screens again

Theatre owners here have decided to resume screening of Shah Rukh Khan-starrer ‘Dilwale’ after it was disrupted from December 20 due to protests from Bajrang Dal and VHP activists. The right-wing Hindu outfits had stalled the screening of the movie in protest against Shah Rukh Khan’s comment on growing “religious intolerance” in the country. The theatre managements had stopped the screening of the movie fearing attack from the Hindu activists.

Though the police had assured security for the screenings, the theatre owners were not ready to take a risk. The new decision from the management came after the police department offered total security. Deputy Commissioner of Police Shantharaju said adequate security measures had been deployed in the theatres for the smooth screening of the movie.

City-based social activist Vidya Dinker had filed a complaint with the police demanding action against the Bajrang Dal activists who forcibly stopped the screening of the movie in theatres. She had later received murder and rape threats on the Facebook.

The Co-convenor of Bajrang Dal Puneet Raj Kottari, the prime accused in the case, was arrested in this connection on December 26. Dinker welcomed the decision of the theatre owners and said she would continue her fight against fundamentalists. She also said she would be watching ‘Dilwale’ tonight to celebrate her ‘victory.’
