As a 2009 New year special, we start this new section on our site called “Ask Us”. Its pretty darn straight forward.

Have any query / question about stars, movies, box-office or anything related to Bollywood? Ask Us! Just submit your question(s) below, in the usual comments section. We will try and answer as many questions as we possibly can.

Note – Questions should only be in English and try to be as clear with your question as possible, it will help us understand better.

  • Why does Hrithik do just one movie in a year? It’s just that people tend to be fickle and forget him and his spectacular performances quickly. The year in which he did Krish and Dhoom 2, that was an amazing year and he was quite the rave, as he should be. So anyway, what’s his theory behind this one-movie-per-year philosophy?

    Hrithik signed a lot of films before the success of Kaho Na Pyaar Hai, and most of them didnt do well at the box-office. The directors who had signed him on for small roles, suddenly had to rewrite the entire script as it would be promoted as a Hrithik Roshan film. So the last minute changes resulted in bad movies and back to back failures, which brought down the market value of Hrithik considerably. He made a comeback with Koi Mil Gaya and then decided to be very careful when it comes to selecting scripts and do just one film at a time. But as most of his movies are big budget flicks, the production itself takes about a year. Jodha Akbar was in the making for more than 2 years! So unfortunately, when you go for quality the quantity suffers.

    Things should change soon though, he should be doing one film every 9 months henceforth. Thats about 3 films every 2 years.

    1. Obviously they are disappointed. Wouldnt you be, if you fav stars movie flopped? Everyone has to experience failure some day doesnt matter if its Hrithik, SRK or Aamir.

    2. Probably Akshay was over confident. He signed CC2C before reading the script.

    3. There is nothing like A/u its U/A which means unrestricted but with adult accompaniment. A means only for Adults.

    4. Yes, action films dont work overseas. Romantic film do much much better.

    1. It has good chances at the BO, as long as its not a bad film.

    2. Obviously, he would be bringing in the crowd. But if it fails, it wont affect him much.

    Amitabh took 13 films to give a hit.He got so many chances to prove himself.But all big actors today are here because they clicked in their early projects.Why are big banners not even attempting to consider new talents instead of 40 year olds?

    1. Akshay should be more careful with signing films. He agreed to do CC2C jsut by looking at the basic idea and the poster!
    2. A lot depends on Akshay’s next. If that fails, he is in trouble.
    3. Yes, Ghajini has been all those films. And is now the only Indian film (nett) gross more than 100 crores. Currently Ghajini is at 110 crores.
    4. Too long a list to mention here. We will create a new article on the same, soon :)
    5. The likes of Aditya Chopra, Karan Johar, Farah Khan and even the likes of Rajkumar Hirani are too insecure probably to take risks with young stars. With SRK in the lead chances of a movie flopping is very less, unless its that bad like CC2C / Drona. Big stars, average movies = box-office blockbuster! By the way, Ashutosh Gowariker will next be directing Harman Baweja.

    Akshay, SRK, Hrithik and Aamir (in no particular order) are the highest paid actors in Bollywood. All of them either produce their own films or take a share off the profit from the producers. Salman comes next at No 5.

  • 1.Thank u,indicine team for your friendly interaction and quick responses to our queries.I think this ud be a difficult question to answer but I still ud like ur thoughts on this matter. All indians will be proud of a.r.rahman after golden globe win and oscar nominations.Many are saying rahman should have got it for music in lagaan ,rdb or bombay.But i feel western music respects those songs which are not just melodious but has good instrumentations and good background score.I think given the fact that oscars are so self-obsessed with themselves,it is nice that rahman is close to this award,this should be his reward for his lifetime musical inventions.But it raises the question,since a.r.rahman is the only indian to achieve this feat,can we say he is the greatest indian music director ever?is he bigger than madan mohan,laxmikant-pyarelal,r.d.burman,rafi,shankar-ehsaan-loy,jatin-lalit etc.It is true that 40 years ago music was not developed like today,and madan mohan,rafi,panchamachieved great feat but I think there are a few exceptional qualities of a.r.rahman.

    1.the expanse of the music .Lately his songs have had a great expanse.Consider a ‘behka’or ‘kaise mujhe’.But the mood of the song remains intact and strengthens with time.
    2.the backgroundscore.No indian music director of present era could come close to the knowledge of use of instruments of rahman.’jodhaa akbar’and’rdb’background scores were exceptional.
    3.his ease with different branches of music.Can u name a music director who has made rock music,romantic songs,historic songs,patriotic songs in 15 years?

    This makes me feel probably rahman is the best.What is your take on this?Do u think the above reasons are justified?Do u feel rahman has given the best music of his life(songs as well as backgroun score)in slumdog?though it is difficult,could u rate the all-time great music directors of india?Which are ur personal favourite works of rahman as music director.?There was a time in mid 2000’s when rahman had no acceptance(yuva and many other films’ music flopped).what was the reason?was he ahaed of his times?what changes were observed in his music after that?

    AR Rehman is arguably one of the best music composers ever. Music in the past technically wasn’t as advanced as it is today, but personally I feel Veer Zaara is one of the best albums of the decade, the music of which was composed by Madan Mohan. Lets not compare ARR to the legends of the past, but in comparison to the current music directors.. ARR is by far the best!

    Regarding Slumdog Millionaire, NO it is def not Rehman’s best work ever. My personal ARR fav’s are Dil Se, Lagaan, Jodha Akbar.. Last year Ghajini and Jaane Tu were top notch too.. Rehman’s has been amazingly consistent in the last couple of years. As you said his music was probably ahead of its time Yuva unfortunately didnt work at the BO and hence the music went unnoticed. Whereas in the last couple of years, most of the movies that Rehman has worked in, have worked at the BO. A movies success / failure has direct impact on the success / failure of the music!

    However I would like to further continue with that particular topic. A few days ago, on Zoom TV, the very same issue came up and the reporter said that the story about SRK being approached first for the role in Slumdog Millionaire and him turning it down was a false rumour and that in fact Anil Kapoor was always Danny Boyle’s first choice and he stuck by it. So what is the real truth?

    Ps: Anil Kapoor did a fantastic job in the movie!!!

    SRK himself has confirmed recently that he was approched for the role, but he turned it down.

    Fathiya, just because you didnt like / dislike a film doesnt make it good / bad! The majority loved Andaaz and hated Paheli. In my opinion, Andaaz was decent, Paheli was boring!

    Well, The actual budget of Billu Barber is less than 20 crores. But the movie has been sold by SRK’s production house for more than 45 crores. The film will have to do in excess of 50 crores to be declared a hit

    SRK has just one other release for 2009.

    2. The original in Malayalam was fantastic, so it should be good. If the content’s good, the business should be good too!

    3. Akshay has had a poor beginning, a lot depends on how his next few movies turn out to be. Will he be continuing with his senseless comedies? Will they audience accept him in another mindless comedy? Lets wait and watch. Salman’s career has been at ta all time low. Hard to predict now.. One good movie that works at the BO and Salman will be back right there in the Top 5 – 6..

    1. No.. It did above average to hit business. The opening was great but it didnt sustain.
    2. Many many.. Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Bengali, Marathi, Bhojpuri obviously Hindi.. Did we miss any?
    3. Yes, there is a fear in the industry that films that release in January dont do well at the BO. But there have been several instances when movies released in January have done great business.. Kaho Na Pyaar Hai is the biggest example. Guru too did well. So its all about the content. If a movie is good it will work. If its bad.. Like CC2C it doesnt matter when it releases, it wont work!
    4. SRK, Aamir and Hrithik have delivered back to back blockbusters. Akshay has not been very consistent (Tashan, CC2C)
    5. Not sure about the Top 10.. The only bankable stars are Aamir, Hrithik, SRK and Akshay. Shahid, Salman have a good fan following too. The rest (Abhishek, John etc) cant carry a solo film.

    1) What does SRK’s sister doing? I heard she is suffering from depression after the death of their parents and that she was living with SRK in his house. But she has left his house some time back. Is this news true? If so where is she now? Why does SRK doesn’t talk about her much?

    2)Is Preity Zinta half chinese? What are parents doing? Does she have any brothers or sisters?

    1. Interesting question, we will dedicate a whole new article for this. To answer your question in short, SRK’s sister Shenaz went into depression soon after both her parents died at the age of 51. SRK doesnt talk much about his sis and the last time she was seen in the public, the picture was slightly disturbing. Have a look below (behind Gauri)

    2. Not true. Her father, Durganand Zinta, died in a car accident when Preity was 13. Her mother, Nilprabha, was also injured and was bedridden for 2 years.
