Maybe I’ve gone “old” (though I don’t consider myself old..), I remember movies in the 90s which were big hits (Dil, Dil hai ke manta nahin, Saajan, Dilwale Dulhanya le jaeyge, Hum aapke hain kaun so on so on), and they were a big hit for a whole year, sometimes more. It took a year before the music of those movies were outdated. But today even if the movies are good, and big hits they are easy come and easy gone. Is this because of the fast world we are living in, cause of the new technology or because the movies are not so good now?
In the 90s, multiplexes didnt exist in India. So a movie would release on single screens with limited number of shows per day (usually 4).. and tickets were reasonably priced. Most theatres even lacked advance booking. Big movies would release on a limited number of prints (100 – 150) and people ventured out to watch movies based only on strong word of mouth. For example, Hum Aapke Hain Kaun released on just 2 theatres in Mumbai, people loved it, prints were increased and the rest is history. Rajshri tried a similar formula for Vivaah and succeeded. Tried it again with Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi and failed.
But since the beginning of the multiplex era, the crazy growth of piracy and television.. The life of a movie at theatres has drastically decreased. Now its all about the first weekend and movies recover most of its cost during its initial weekend, whereas in the 90s it would take a good 4 – 5 weeks to recover costs.
Now Big movies release on 1000+ prints with 10 – 15 shows per day.. The tickets too cost a lot more. While a best category ticket would cost Rs 20 – 40 on a single screen back then, tickets are priced at anywhere between 150 – 500 at multiplexes today. The other major issue in the industry currently is, pirated CDs and DVDs are out by Friday evening and at times even before the release of the film. Back then, Piracy didn’t exist which meant people would flock to theatres even 50 weeks after the release of a great movie.
Multiplexes are great for producers, but the negative is… its all about packaging and marketing a product now, which has resulted in steep decline in quality of movies. Crap movies do blockbuster business, which was almost impossible back then!

Q5: I watched Devdas last night again, for the 3rd time, and I found it the best of Sanjay Leela Bhansai, then Saawariya, Black, and the rest will follow.. but my question is: Why did people love so much his movie: Hum Dil De Choke Sanam?! It wasn’t a great movie, the story was good, but was too long, with some scenes which were.. silly?!

Indicine Team: Thanks for your reply to my questions: I ‘ve asked you about the rating for Yeh Vada Raha coz I remember we all, the family members loved this movie with the great songs, and each one of us saw it more than 4 or 5 times, and after the release of this movie, we were shocked to hear that the movie wasn’t a hit or a super hit! ( so I didn’t know the rating therefore I asked you.. if u didn’t see it, then u have to.. it’s old now and you might find some scenes which you don’t like, but it’s worth a watch, at least for the songs and the script.
You said Intehaa was a crap, but I heard while the release of this movie that was a successful one!
I heard also about Satyam Shivan Sundaram that there was a craze at the box office, people couldn’t get tickets and were willing to pay gold to watch the movie and Zeenat Aman half naked.
Sangrash: a good script, but the direction was poor, it just needs a remake, Shahrukh fits in Dilip Kumar’s role. This movie got a great song if you didn’t hear it so do it, till today I listen to it : (Jab Dil Sel Dil Takhraa tah Hai, mut pucheye.. kiya ho jata hai.. juktei hai nazar juktee hai zubah.. maatebe pasina aata hai) a great song ( I don’t know if I wrote it correct or wrong)

1. I’ve always wondered why Lamhe with Sri Devi and Anil Kapoor in the lead role failed. Now I get the chance to know the answer. :) As far as I know the movie was liked by almost everyone. Atleast everyone I knew..
2. Almost in every song, the dancers behind the hero and herione are foreigners. I can understand it sometimes, cause the shooting is outside India, but the future of the background dancers in India doesn’t look good.
3. What do u think abt the vulgarity there is in Indian cinema? For me it is on the point of looking absurd. Don’t u agree? Cause I don’t think that it helps the movie on the box office.
2. Unfortunate, there is absolutely no lack of good dancers in India. But producers continue to import foreign dancers for a premium.
3. Yes, vulgarity in movies is steadily increasing with girls trying every shortcut to success. Most of them cant act to save their lives!

I have a question regarding the role of the host of the show in the movie. We’ve seen BigB and SRK as the actual hosts of the KBC show, so naturally one would think that either of them would be chosen to play this role in the film. Anil did an excellent job, don’t get me wrong, I’ve always found him to be an excellent and versatile actor. However, I was surprised that BigB or SRK weren’t chosen and out of curiosity why was this so?
