Shahrukh Khan’s Happy New Year has fallen short of the lifetime collections of Salman Khan’s Kick, which remains the highest grosser in India this year. While Happy New Year was expected to beat Kick after a record-breaking opening day of Rs 44.97 cr, the film failed to show enough growth on its first Sunday and the drop on Monday meant that the Farah Khan film was always going to find it difficult to cross the 233 crore business of Kick.
In hindsight, the battle for the top grosser of the year could have been a lot closer if Shahrukh Khan had decided to release his film on the Diwali holiday (23rd October). The film lost out on business in the South and other parts of India which do well even on Diwali puja day because of holidays. Last year, Krrish 3 released 3 days before Diwali and still managed to set a record on the day after Diwali – which is considered to be the best day for business. The Post-Diwali holiday collections would have probably been a little lower than Rs 44.97 crore, but the previous day business could have been anywhere between 20-25 cr, which isn’t a bad start considering Diwali pooja.
While Diwali is still a great period to release films, Eid and Christmas weekends are probably better for film business as films tend to sustain better after a good opening.
Overall, the Kick vs Happy New Year comparison once again proves that star-power is judged based on the opening that a film gets. After the initial hype subsides, the content completely takes over. Kick found more appreciation amongst the masses, which is the reason why it sustained well even after a good opening week. In fact, the second week business makes it obvious – Happy New Year collected Rs 35.87 crore with 3 holidays (including Sunday), whereas Kick collected Rs 51.01 crore with just one holiday on Sunday – a difference of Rs 15.14 crore in week 2! Pretty much sums it up, doesn’t it?

both the films were loved by the audience and I found both of them equally entertaining.but perhaps others found kick more entertaining than hny thata y kick is a bb and hny superhit.but I m happy for both the films

Power of Salman! If Kick had 5000 screen release like HNY then 45 crore opening day was possible and lifetime would have been 275+ crores easily. Salman continues to be the most crowdpulling actor of bollywood.
lol despite of so much holidays hny has failed to cross kick so its again prove that salman is biggest of bollywood who alone can create record as we all know kick had only n only salman while hny had srk,deepika,even farah khan had good reputation as it was srk-farah combo then huge promotion i mean biggest promotion for any movie ever so from this any one can say that salman is biggest.
With so many holidays and so little to show for it maybe its a good idea king gets no more favourable holiday releases over next few years…
