Top 5 Actors in Bollywood – Box office battle

There has been a lot of discussion in the comments section as to who the Top 5 actors in Bollywood are at the moment. Most in the Singh Is King Box office collection topic were of the opinion that Akshay Kumar post Singh is King has gone past Shahrukh Khan as the King of Bollywood.

So we decided to do some research on the Top 5 actors in Bollywood and their last 5 movies. The actors included in the battle are Shahrukh Khan, Akshay Kumar, Hrithik Roshan, Aamir Khan and Salman Khan.

The results were quite unexpected. A few things before we give you the numbers.

Some points to remember are, actors with more releases in recent times (Post 2006) have an advantage over actors whose movies released in say 2003. That is because of the mutliplexes that have come up all over the country and also the increase in the number of prints.

So Akshay Kumar has a much bigger advantage over Aamir Khan as Aamir’s 5th movie Dil Chahta Hai released in 2001, when there were hardly any multiplexes. Also dont forget the inflation!

Here are the number.

5. Salman Khan – Salman Khan is at Number 5. We havent taken God Tussi Great Ho into count as it has just released last week and its final gross is awaited. He mainly suffers because of Marigold, as it did less than 1 crore of business in India! Salman has just one Blockbuster i.e Partner.

  • Jaan-E-Mann (2006) – 27 crores – Flop
  • Babul (2006) – 17 crores – Flop
  • Saalam-e-Ishq (2007) – 24 crores – Flop
  • Partner (2007) – 62 crores – Blockbuster
  • Marigold (2007) – 1 crore – Disaster

Total – 131 crores
Average – 26.2 crores per movie.

4. Aamir Khan – Aamir Khan although at a huge disadvantage is at Number 4. Imagine if Dil Chahta Hai had released today? It would have grossed atleast a minimum of 50 crores at the box office. Still since his come back the perfectionist has 2 Superhits and 1 Blockbuster to his credit.

  • Dil Chahta Hai (2001) – 16 crores – Hit
  • Mangal Pandey (2005) – 29 crores – Average
  • Rang De Basanti (2006) – 51 crores – Super Hit
  • Fanaa (2006) – 53 crores – Super Hit
  • Taare Zameen Par (2007) – 61 crores – Blockbuster

Total – 210 crores
Average – 42 crores per movie.

3. Shahrukh Khan – Has been affected big time due to the failure of Paheli. It didnt even get a face saving opening at the box-office and did just 13 crores. Rest of his movies have done well. KANK and Don bearly managed to go on to be hits. Chak De and Om Shanti Om were blockbusters.

  • Paheli (2005) – 13 crores – Flop
  • Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna (2006) – 46 crores – Above Average to Hit
  • Don (2006) – 50 crores – Hit
  • Chak De India (2007) – 64 crores – Blockbuster
  • Om Shanti Om (2007) – 87 crores – Blockbuster

Total – 260 crores
Average – 52 crores per movie.

2. Akshay Kumar – Now this was a real toughie. But we decided to push Akshay Kumar down to second due to several reasons. He is the only star to not have a single solo ‘Blockbuster’ to his credit (Welcome was a multistarrer with Anil Kapoor, Paresh Rawal and Nan Patekar). Although we have included Singh Is King, it has not completed its complete run at the boxoffice. We had to predict the total nett gross of Singh Is Kinng to 72 crores (44 crores in week one is confirmed + 18 crores in week 2 is also confirmed + 6 crores in week 3 and about 4 crores in the rest of the weeks is a prediction). The other reason for placing him at second is he is the only actor who has the advantage of every movie releasing Post – 2006. No release in the Pre multiplex era of India Cinema.

  • Heyy Babyy (2007) – 52 crores – Super hit
  • Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007) – 54 crores – Super hit
  • Welcome (2007) – 76 crores – Blockbuster (Multistarrer)
  • Tashan (2008) – 31 crores – Flop
  • Singh Is King (2008) – 72 crores – Hit to Super hit

Total – 285 crores
Average – 57 crores per movie.

1. Hrithik Roshan – By far the youngest actor in the list, Hrithik Roshan by pure box office numbers of India, tops although by a very close margin. 2 solo blockbusters (KMG, Krrish), 1 multi star Blockbuster (Dhoom 2) and 1 Super hit (Jodha Akbar). His only failure in the last 4 years has been Lakshya which did average business at the boxoffice. A great comeback after about 6 failures in a row after Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai.

Hrithik also has two movies pre 2006 which is a disadvantage.

  • Koi Mil Gaya (2003) – 44 crores – Super Hit
  • Lakshya (2004) – 23 crores – Average
  • Krrish (2006) – 66 crores – Blockbuster
  • Dhoom 2 (2006) – 86 crores – Blockbuster
  • Jodhaa Akbar (2008) – 63 crores – Super Hit

Total – 282 crores
Average – 56.4 crores per movie.

The whole list might change when Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and Chandni Chowk To China release in December. SRK could make it to the top if Rab Ne works big time. How Chandni Chowk fares will also be interesting. Hrithik’s kites releases in the summer of 2009 and there is news that it could be sold for 100 crores if not more. Aamir Khan’s Ghajini too releases this year end and is expected to create boxoffice history.

We will post an update here after all the 3 movies; Rab Ne, Chandni Chowk and Ghajini release.

Note – These figures are only of how the movies fared at the Indian Box-office. Shahrukh Khan is the undisputed king of the overseas box-office. Akshay Kumar and Hrithik Roshan come a close second and third.

Lets discuss below, if you dont agree with the article please post a comment on why. Thank you for reading.

  • y do i say he is humble bcoz he says wat he believes…wen a news channel said u rocked in the song “Hare Ram Hare Krishna” he quickly replied saying the music was such that even if u had done it u wud hav rocked….now u guys talk only abt his fees hw many of u knw that he has taken complete responsibility of restructuring a villiage in Bihar after it was hit by Cyclone…
now u guys wil say its a media stunt to gain PR…

Wel for me he was not responsible until he got married and post 2000 he has done diff types of movies and comedy made him famous so he is typecasted earlier a Action Hero now a comedian and in between all these the movies like “Waqt”, “Ankhaee”,”Khakee”,”Jaanwar”,”Sangharsh”,”Namastey London”,”Bhool Bhulaiya”,”Dhadkan”,”Aitraaz”, “Ajnabee”,”Ek Ristha(Flop)” were not out n out comedies but were from small production house…interested plp can checkout that critics were happy wit it….

im Ok wit wat Hrithik has acheived but to b a heavyweight champ he shud take risks churn out more films make them successful…but lets accept the fact that AK is a Hit machine and u cannot giv hit again n again if u r not a good actor

  • Indicine Team: Plz put this discussion in ur headlines i want more n more plp to come for the discussion…
Keep the headlines rolling till the thread dies…

  • I agree with you, Mr. Ashok. 100%.

    To Aryan,
Do you really think it’s fair for Akshay to ask for 72 crores when we all know that the best movies only make about 80 – 90 crores??? What will be left for the other members of the cast and crew? Does he care? Is this humility?? Even the public voted that it is unfair!
It is said that true charity is “when your right hand does charity and even your left hand doesnt come to know about it”. So yes, yes it IS a publicity stunt and I cant believe that you are naive enough to believe otherwise and say that because the newspapers report of his charity, he is humble?? Do you even know the meaning of humility?? And all celebrities do their bits for society because it casts them in a positive light and they wish to encourage their fanbase to imitate such acts. BUT that is not really a sign of humility!
BTW pride always comes before a fall. Take Himesh for example. What a hype there was about him! But then he insisted that he would only sing and direct music for movies he acts in. And what happened to all that hype? POOF!!
So therefore, if Akshay asks for 72 crores, just how many producers and directors will be willing to pay him that much. It is a simple case of Economics. When the price goes up, the demand comes hurtling down!! [Especially for ORDINARY goods] ;)

  • ABD & Dr. Patel,

U both r right in what u mentioned. I saw an interview for Hrithik where he says that he feels more comfortable to work in his dad’s home production movies, as he can discuss, argue with the director/producter of his movie which is his dad, but while working with other directors, he’s has to show respect to what they ask him to ( If we put ourselves in his shoes, we’d the same). Hrithik cares about his success more than earning money, that’s his character ( I think Shahrukh too) but.. there’s a point that all these celebrities not in a need of money when they (raise) their price, it’s just that whey they get the highest paid, it indicates that they are the best.. that’s all, therefore, Akshay raised his price as he knows now that he is at number 1 position, as everyone say so.. that he is number 1.

So.. If Akshay would earn 70 or more crores for a movie, the other actors feel lower and that it’s a big gap in what they earn and what Akshay would earn.. and I’m sure that most of them will raise their price according to Akshay, if Shahrukh used to earn 13 or 18 crores definitely he’d ask for double or more, that’s natural, all of u ppl r working and in any istitution u work, if some staff who do the same job as u r doing get this much higher increament in his monthly salary, all of u would ask for the same.. it’s not because of jealousy.. no.. it’s because u feel that u r not less than this employee in your performance, loyality, harding wroking, etc.

Ashok: I do agree with u abt the crappy movies Welcome, Tashan, but Heyy Baby wasn’t bad, it was funny for ppl who wants only comedy movies and don’t care about the script and don’t like serious movies ( millions of audiences want just to laugh and nothing else) and SIK also was a funny movie and Akshay did a good job except some scenes. Bhool Bulaiyya was a thriller movie but had some comedy scenes in it ( and Akshay himslef said this during an interview)

  • ABD i like the small jealous in u wen u write” [Especially for ORDINARY goods] ;) ”
ABD u r mistaken 72 Cr will not b paid to AK as his fee it includes fees + territory business +overseas share + % share of profits as a fee he might b getting max 30-35 cr n the 80-90 cr wat u r talking is only India boxoffice business doesnot include oversea, television, home video, music business…
n moreover that piece of news is denied by AK himself…n abt the bihar news it was told by a Director Prakash Jha who hails frm Bihar n i dont think AK has done any film wit Prakash Jha n moreover if somebody says XYZ has paid 25+lakhs it will b cross checked bcoz its not a small amount…
he is jus returning the favour to the plp of Bihar since most of his movies including Tashan got good response in Bihar…
So dont worry abt the numbers….and abt Himesh i knw he declined to compose for “Welcome” midway which was not ethical lets leave the person to fight it out in the industry…

Fathiya very nice very good comment on the hw the business runs for Actors/actresses…

  • Dear Fathiya, you should not sit on the fence, it does not suit you. Take a stand, madame! I know it is Eid and you are feeling particularly charitable, that is because u are a good human being, but the truth must stand in all its glory and therefore you must agree and change your stand that Heyy Baby, Bhool Bhulaiya and Singh is King are all C grade films. Not worthy of any discussion. Eid mubarak to you and all your relatives and friends. And from tomorrow when the stomachs are full we will think better. Inshallah.

  • To all my friends and foes on this forum,
I wish you all prosperity, success, humility and good sense on this auspicious occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr. And I feel on this happy occasion we need a change of subject. Enough about Akshay, SRK, Hrithik etc. Let’s be nostalgic and go back in time to the Golden Era of films. Here is my list of my top ten oldies. I would be happy if my friends and foes on this forum would also share their fond oldie memories with me too.

    10. Jwar Bhata [Dharmendra, Saira Banu]
    9. Aakir Kyon? [Rajesh Khanna, Smitha Patil, Rakesh Roshan]
    8. Mera Saaya [Sunil Dutt, Sadhna]
    7. Aradhna [Rajesh Kanna, Sharmila Tagore]
    6. Bawarchi [Rajesh Khanna, Jaya Bachhan]
    5. Dushman [Rajesh Khanna, Meena Kumari, Mumtaz]
    4. Satyakaam [Dharmendra, Sharmila Tagore]
    3. Mother India [Nargis, Sunil Dutt]
    2. Amar Prem [Rajesh Khanna, Sharmila Tagore]
    1. Guide [Dev Anand, Waheeda Rehman]

Each of these films had a unique story, superb acting, wonderful songs, and strong direction. Ofcourse when we talk about the Golden Era and oldies, the list is endless. But these are my favourites. Which ones are yours?
[Of late we have been arguing so much about Hrithik, Akkie, SRK etc This has become mentally exhausting which is why I am introducing a change of subject for today only, as it is Eid, which is a time for nostalgia and fond memories of the past]

  • * Akshay * d kinng ov action d kinng ov comedy n d most romantic hero i’hv evr seen. His blockbuster namastey london made him d most romantic hero. singh is kinng has broken all records in india n all over d world. Films total collection in india is abt 90 crores. And in u.k its 1.2 million pounds..so d real king

    1” Akshay kumar (mr. khiladi)
    2”Aamir
    3”srk
    4”ranbir
    5”salmaan

  • ABD: Thanks ABD but I’m saying what I felt.. honestly.. Heyy Baby & SIK weren’t bad movies.. they weren’t a great movies but – at least – I didn’t get bored while watching them and quite enjoyed them, I didn’t feel that they were worthless movies.. I didn’t say to myself: what a crap as I said while watching Welcome, JTYJN, Golmaal, and so many others ( but I don’t understand why lots of ppl consider Akshay’s movie Namaste London as a great one!! it was good although I didn’t like Akshay’s acting in one scene in the movie but not a great one and wasn’t Akshay’s best performance) …but wait.. holdon ABD.. why do u consider Bhool Bhulaiya as a 3rd class movie?!! I hear this for 1st time as everyone loved this movie, I don’t agree with u in this, the movie was so good and didn’t lack anything, the direction, prodcution, script, music, all the cast’s performance ( I don’t know why u didn’t like it!)

About the old movies, my list would be as follows:

10.Aap ki Kasam (Rajesh Khanna & Mumtaz)
    9. Amar Prem
    8.Masoom
    7. Bahavna
    6. Arth
    5. Satyam Shivam Sundaram
    4. Mother India
    3. Guide
    2. Aradhana
    1. Sangam

( And 2 of Amitab Bachan’s movie (Sharabi & Khuda Ghawa) but these movies aren’t so old, maybe in the last quarter of 80’s I assume)

  • Punjabi Sher, comments with offensive words like idiot, stupid etc will be deleted if reported by the member.

Aryan, I have added the link to the top header.

  • Indicine………..I have only said once stupid……….Which i think is not any big abuse to anyone………Many people say more bad words……..so dont delete my comments

  • ABD: I forgot to add to my list 2 nice old movies which I loved and they were also blockbuster movies ( Do Raaste for Rajesh Khanna and Jab Jab Phool Keli for Shashi Kapoor.

    Do Raaste at no 5
Jab Jab Phool Keli at no. 6 then the rest

  • Without being biased.. I totally agree with the list. Hrithik is very underrated by the media. He has been highly succcessful at such a young age. His contemporaries like Abhishek Bachan, Fardeen Khan, Zayed Khan, Arjun Rampal, Vivek Oberoi have almost faded away.

Nice List Indicine. Very informative good read

  • My favourite movie if i like to say because that those are my fav actors than, i seen many hindi movies being an indian n mumbaities films are there in my blood, but it take a big time for me to select my fav actor, during my school days & college days anil kapoor is a super star of teezab, ram lakhan, than a new chocolate boy launch aamir khan n many of our school girl is a die hard fan of aamir may be today also, but i dont like aamir as well as anil, than salman khan famous when i m 8th standard than also i not like n e of them even from the first movie of shahrukh i not like him that much

But from movie darr during college days with a big gang of 20 boyz n 22 girls i become a die hard fan of srk………..

Uff wat a perfomance ( becoz before darr , damini release n everyone remember sunny deol for ghayal a macho man ) but shahrukh turn everything…..

N from that day i m following srk movies reading his articles, getting more n more information of srk

My fav. Movie. Among all actor is

Anil kapoor is wonderfull in meri jung
Sunny deol is outstanding in ghayal
Aamir khan is superb during 90’s in baazi
Suniel shetty only one film i like him very much that is dhadkan
Amitabh bachan towering perfomance is in agneepath
Jackie shroff for me all time favourite film is parinda
Above all i like shahrukh in many films but for me he is a lovelable boy in kabhi haa kabhi na…

If u turn again this list than anil kappoor is once again wonderful in his career third phase that is in trimurti, taal & race

Sunny deol & suniel sheetty i not mention in my new list coz they are ok in one single movie

Akhshay khanna is remarkable in many film but taal ufffff

Many more to add but not now later on bye….

  • My further list

Hrithik roshan become a super star from film kaho naa pyar hai.. But i like him in “fizaa” his perfomance and jaya bachan perfomance is simply great.

Abhishek bachan finally become an actor from ” guru” very good perfomance

Sanju baba did many films since 1983’s rocky but really his award winning perfomance is one and only vaatsav, i like his perfomance also in ‘ naam’ , ” khal nayak ” and munna bhai 1 & 2,

    Among the classic actors list

Nasir udddin shah is my all time classic actor many of his perfomance is thump up…. At the time when amitabh bachan is a super star, nasir uddin shah win film fare awards due to his perfomances he has three best actor film fare awards i dont know about national.

I like him in …. Karma ( he shake legendary dilip kumar ), masoom, bazaar, arth, and many more

Raj kapoor is wonder full in shree 420, anari, his all films are message

Dilip kumar is only actor who has many filmfare awards in his belt due to his perfomances but… For me he is best in shakti,
Dilip kumar whenever he stand in front of camera its seem all scenes are natural, a great great and a great perfomer of indian cinema,

This is indian cinema many more actor come n go but movies and there perfomance always been remember by audience

  • Hey all,

Please type only in lower case or Sentence case i.e First letter of every sentence in caps. I have edited a few comments, it tough for readers to read comments in caps, it also called shouting!

    Thanks

  • All of u…………………..Why u have not written any film which of akshay kumar which in memorable………Let me tell u my favourite of akshay………………

    1. Namestey london ( great performance done by akki)

    2. Hera pheri ( grt comedy done by akki, His first comedy movie and the memorable one)

    3. Ajnabee ( Exellant neagtive role done by the king kumar)

4.Singh is kinng ( a movie which gave the tittle of king to akshay)

  • The most worst performances of shahrukh khan………………

    1. Ashoka

    2. Phir bhi dil hai hindustani

    3. Paheli

    4. yes boss

    5. one 2 ka 4

    6. chamatkar

    7. baadshah

Many more movies are there………..but i hate these movies of srk…………….

  • Sajid: Anil Kapoor’s performance was also very good in Pukar with Madhuri Dixit.

I’ve missed out one good movie in the list I mentioned of old movies (Bombay) I loved it, Manisha Koirala did only 2 good movies out of many she did for the past years, and they were: Dil Se and Bombay. I heard she got a new movie to be released and let’s see if her come back is worthy!

  • Champ.. Hi

What u r asking me needs really a time to do it.. I will but in parts.. I do agree with your ratings for some of SRK’s movies, and disagree with others, here you’r.. my ratings for his movies explaining also the reasons but in brief: ( some old of shahrukh’s I didn’t see, because in the past, I used to watch only the movies which had good reviews, therefore, I won’t be able to rate all his old movies, and some of them I saw only some parts but not in full.

DDLJ: 3/5 ( It was a good movie, I liked the second half more than 1st half, but it’s not worth all the hype and to run in cinemas for almost 10 years!!!!!!!!!!! but.. it’s the Indian audience’s taste.. what can we do about it!! they love also Rajanikanth’s movies.. the stupid cartoon action movies.. what can we do about it!! They considered JTYJN as a very good movie which I’d spit on it.. what can I do about it.. but DDLJ was just a good movie, that’s all.

OSO: 2/5 I didn’t like it except the songs.. I didn’t like SRK’s role, the direction was low, the 1st half was boring, pathetic

Chakde India 5/5 a masterpeace, worth all the awords ( I loved SRK’s performance and his look

Don: 2/5 was good for stupid idiot people to watch, I didn’t like SRK in villain role, he can’t be bad and doesn’t fit in such roles, and the script was wrong.

Kank: 4/5 very good in direction, production, cinematography, script, and the songs, but the only negative points were: Shahrukh’s acting was poor in the movie, in most of the scenes, and we, as audiences, couldn’t accept the ending as the movie encouraged married ppl to betray their partners, that was the bad point although it happens (and always) in the real life.. it happens everywhere but it’s hard for ppl to accept this fact ( Karan Johar copied the movie from a hollywood movie “Falling in Love” for Robert Dinnero, old one)

Paheli: 3/5 was a fairy tale, nice diredtion, shahrukh’s acting was good, loved some songs of the movie specially (deerijhalna deerijhalna) actually it was a special unique movie.

Swades: 5/5 was just an excellent movie and shahrukh’s acting was so good.

Veer Zarah 10/5 a masterpeace, I loved everything in the movie, a very touching story which had a great influence on my feelings, one of Shahrukh’s best movies and performance except the female voice for the songs which was perfomed by (Lata Mangheskar) as she’s old now, over 70 I assume! so her voice too became old!! she just spoiled the songs, that’s the only mistake in the movie.. some great beautiful songs but performed with a bad voice! her voice was good only in the scene where Hema Malini sings.. yes voice of an old woman suits an old or middle age lady, but not a young lady who’s the heroine.. Preity Zinta!!)

Main Hoon Na: 3/5 an intertaining movie with some nice songs, funny, but what I didn’t like the action in the movie ( was like some cartoons!!)

    Will be continued..

And.. I didn’t know some shorts u used ( No. 15 K3G and No. 21 KKHH which movies r they?)

K3G: u meant Kabhi Khoshi Kabhi Ghum 3.5/5: Good.. but not too good.. I already mentioned the reasons as they r many, if u just go back to my previous comments, u’ll know the reason

KKHH: Kuch Kuch Hota Hai: 9/5 Best of Shahrukh’s old movies.. much better than Dil Wale.. although I didn’t like some minor scenes but it was really a nice movie with best songs, and Kajol performed at her best in the 2nd half, all Bahraini’s loved this movie, even a girl from my family, who’s not interested in hindi movies, she liked it.

Kal Hona Ho: 5/5 a very nice romantic comedy with nice songs, Shahruk’s acting was good in the comedy scenes but, and as I said earlier, he needs to perform better in sad scenes, so the scene, at the end of the movie, where he leaves the hospital to meet Preity, that scenes he didn’t perform at his best.

Chalte Chaltre: 3/5 a good script, but the direction wasn’t that good, SRK’s performance at the airport scene , the last scene ( including Rani) was bad, so fake!

Devdas: 4/5 a great indian movie, Madhuri Dixit gave the movie a special flavour, a value, but I didn’t like some scenes, the scene when shahrukh returns from UK wearing a hat and meeting his lover after 10 years, and she tries to hide her face with a veil and there was a fly buzzing in the room!! I didn’t like this scene and the scene when Aishwariya’s mom dances, when shahrukh’s family invite her and lie about the couple’s relationship.

Hum Tumarai Hai Sanam: 3.5/5 I loved this movie.. I know.. a low production but a nice script performed by big stars, SRk, Salman & Madhuri.. I liked also the comedy scenes of this movie, I saw it twice, the negative points : If another director did this movie with a higher budget, and if they did choose some good supporting actors, the movie would’ve been excellent, the actress who played Shahruk’s sister wasn’t applicable.. she used to do some sexy roles, didn’t have the image of a sister to shahrukh and I don’t know why the director gave her this role!!

One 2 ka 4: 2/5 a pass time movie, the best scene was the song: Sona Nahi na sahi.

Mohabbetain: 5/5 one of my favourite romantic indian movies ever, I saw it 5 times since the release with very nice songs & melodies, Shahruk’s acting was good in this movie

    Josh: 2/5 didn’t like it

Phir Bi Dil Hai Hindustani: 1/5 only the title song was good!

Badshah: 0/5 I didn’t like it, so commercial!
Ram Jaane: 0/5 ” ” too, ( Badshah, Raam Jaane, Gudu, Zamaan or Pyar Ashena.. sorry.. I don’t know the correct names of these old movies but weren’t good movies)

Dil To Paagl Hai: 3.5/5 A good script, nice songs, but Shahrukh’s role wasn’t strong, and the way the couple meet was so cold!!

Pardes: 4.5/5 I loved the movie

Yess Boss: 2.5/5 didn’t like it much

Few left, I will get back to u.
