Top 5 Actors 2012: Box Office Report Card

(By Archit Mishra)

In our country, actors are not just stars but they are literally worshipped by their fans. With 2012 coming to an end, it’s time to review which superstar reigned supreme at the ticket window and who remained comparatively dormant. This discussion / comparison also becomes more interesting as the year gone by is amongst those rare times when all the superstars arrived with full force simultaneously.

NOTE: This write up takes into account only the box office performance of superstars in 2012.

Top Actors of 2012

Top Actors of 2012

1. Salman Khan: The superhero of bollywood “SAL-Man” remains way ahead of the rest this year as well. He continued his winning streak in 2012 and completed his fifth successive blockbuster. While Tiger Khan’s Eid-Independence Day release Ek Tha Tiger (BLOCKBUSTER) arose as the Biggest Holiday Opener and went on to collect 186 cr (official figure 199 crore), Chulbul Pandey’s Dabangg 2 (BLOCKBUSTER) just before Christmas turned out to be Biggest non-holiday opener and is expected to end with Rs 150 crores. Now collections of Khan’s films are not just seen as a record but benchmark by trade pundits and his Ek Tha Tiger went closest to the 3 Idiots mammoth tally of 202cr in the recent past. Salman Khan has unquestionably reached the peak in his 23 year long career and 2012 consolidated his top position at box office a notch further.

2. Akshay Kumar: “AKSHUN Kumar” is back with a bang. Khiladi Bhaiyaa relived the splendid success of 2007 again in 2012 and became the first actor ever to have crossed the 400cr landmark within the same year. While Housefull 2 (SUPER HIT) became his ticket to the 100cr elite club by netting 113 cr, Rowdy Rathore (BLOCKBUSTER) gave Akki the biggest hit of his career. Rowdy Rathore emerged as the Biggest Non-Holiday Opener (No points for guessing, Dabangg 2 broke this record later in the year) and closed its lifetime collections at 132 cr. The remarkable OMG! Oh My God (SUPER HIT) with over 82 cr business was the cherry on the cake as it managed to win accolades with classes and hearts of the masses at the same time for Akki. The best part for Akshay Kumar was the terrific word of mouth and universal acceptance by the audience that all the above mentioned films garnered without any holiday weekends, something which has become very rare in today’s scenario of multiplex culture and big openings. Khiladi 786 (AVERAGE) couldn’t transform into a super explosive cracker at the ticket window, but it wasn’t a completely fizzle either with decent collections of Rs 63 crore. The only let down this year for Akshay was Joker (DISASTER) which was a complete washout at box office and could not even cross 22 crore.

3. Hrithik Roshan: At No.3 is the sexiest Asian man in the world. After successfully trying his hand with something as niche as Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Hrithik came back with a hardcore action affair, Agneepath (SUPER HIT), in 2012. Though Hrithik came very close to 100cr with ZNMD last year, it was Agneepath which marked his entry into the elite by managing over 120 cr collections. The film’s strong opening on Republic Day once again substantiated this superstar’s reach amongst the mass audience. His portrayal of the central character Vijay was applauded by one and all.

4. Ranbir Kapoor: The “ROCKSTAR Kapoor” is running a one horse race as far as competition between next gen stars is concerned and in 2012 he demonstrated this yet again. Masala films being the flavor of the season, any superstar will think twice before signing a film as niche as Barfi! (SUPER HIT). Ranbir not only did the film, he lived the central character of Barfi to perfection. He has taken a big leap at the box office since his last release Rockstar which was SEMI HIT in 2011. Barfi netted 106 cr (official figure 120 crore) at the domestic box office and made RK cross the threshold of 100 cr for the first time in his career.

5. Shahrukh Khan: 2012 will also be remembered for another special reason. Subsequent to attempts in sci-fi (Ra-One) and action thriller (Don 2), the ‘global superstar’ returned to doing what he does best, Romance. Jab Tak Hai Jaan (HIT) was a legendary combination of SRK-Yash Chopra-A R Rehman-Gulzar but Shahrukh was always the trump card. Although the film was a clear cut winner at the box office, just edging past 101cr (official figure 120 crore), its collections were adversely hit by the epic Diwali clash with Son of Sardar thereby resulting in a loss of atleast 15-20% business. Had this clash been averted, Shahrukh would have easily managed a position in the Top 3.

The two actors who follow at 6th and 7th spots are Ajay Devgn [Bol Bachchan-100cr (HIT) / Son of Sardar-88cr (HIT) / Tezz-15cr (DISASTER)] and Aamir Khan [Talaash-90cr (SEMI HIT)].

  • ya crct..salman always had more mass following..hahk is d proof..bt he never lost his fans..dis dsnt seem true..as his mass entertainer wanted clctd less than mnik..veer too clctd less..his movies dint do well because even his mass fans stpd watching his movies..tat is sumtng vich vil never hppn to srk..clctns of his movies r steady..after dabangg salman gained undisputed popularity..he beat his pre best cllc wid 80cr.. more than 100 percent of partner nd wanted

  • Rey can you tell me about Srk’s 3 BB in a row btw Aamir has 2 ATBB in a row & Hrithik has also 2 BB in a row.

  • As far as overseas is concern SRK is still no.1 but others are not much behind but in India its a different story altogether. He is declining in india both BO wise & popularity wise.I don’ need to give any example for BO & about popularity even in facebook Salman,Aamir & Hrithik all are ahead of him.

  • I don’t think twitter/fb plays any role..at the end of the day it cums to a star’s capability to pull audience to theatres over weekends….at twitter abhjishek bachan & shahid kapoor r also having huge popularityu but at box office they are nothing

  • Any way the article is rocking..collections mentioned are more or less correct to me….but official colection r fake dey r producer manipulated numbers so dont publish them to mislead ppl

  • Bravo Superb Data :) :)

Akki Paa Ji is back…Next Year he is No.1 with following collection :-

    Special 26 : 95-105cr : SuperHit
    Naam Hai Boss : 125-135cr : Blockbuster
    OUATIM2 : 150+cr : Blockbuster

  • SRK will also b bang back in 2013 with :

    Chennai Exp : 150+cr : Blockbuster
    HNY : 125-135cr : Blockbuster

  • Great Article.Indicine pls include more such analysis, we don’t get such data lyk 2012 vs 2011 anywhere else whther in BOI or BH.

Archit, u rite very informative articles. keep it up :)

  • @rey. Can u tell me how Sallu has big fan following in mass dominating circuit. If it is then y his other than masala didnt open descently. I mean London dreams. Yuvraj. Salam e ishq. Babul mamk etc even ajay SOS, Akki RR, hritiks dhoom2 opened excellent, srk oso, rab ne also open excellent. It means those people only like entertaining movies rather than following any star. It is quite obvious that salman past few movies fall in same categories so their faith on him quite high. Let him do some other genre like mink or talash kind of movie then all these mass people will desappear.

  • @ Anil Uperkar : Bullseye..absolutely rite bro……..no star is away from failure, wen rajesh khana & Big b couldn’t escape this how sallu can……sallu is just playing safe by restricting inside a masala genre & releasing only 1-2 films per year that too on EID or Christmas festival………

MARK MY WORDS : The day salman khan will do a non-masala film on non festive release date, that will test his real starpower.

  • Anil breaker u mean to say al masala movie wil work huh then ma quest to u y k786 didnt cross even 65cr forget 100cr can u ans it logically mr.

  • Rey Ya in twitter Srk lead but only in only 1 lak diff but in facebook salman leads even more than double to Srk . .

  • Mr. Kabir, I’ll take that que on Mr.Anil’s behalf.
Saying K786 didn’t work would be wrong. Its neither HIT nor FLOP, but AVERAGE.

Now if you’ll ask y its not HIT, then there are 2 reasons :-
1.) It was lead actor’s (Akshay Kumar) 5th film this year. Everybody wil agree that more the number of releases lesser are chances for breaking records. If you r a true person, you’ll also understand that had Dabangg, Ready, Bodygurad, ETT released same year, there collections wud hv cum down.
2.) K786 was normal release (NON HOLIDAY)

    & chillax………..m nt a fan………..sallu-srk-akki evry1 rocks, m only trying 2 b logical

  • No kabir…actually khiladi got sandwich betn jthj, SOS, talash nd dabang. Before khiladi first 3 movies already did 240 cr in span of 3 weeks so people already exhausted and all those 3 were bigger release. And dabaang 2 was about to release on Xmas holiday so people already made up their mind for holiday flick. Moreover khiladi was not good product which withstand on its own. But it wud have got better release date then result might have something else at least some respectable figure. 80-90 cr

  • @ indicine ajay always no 3 in 2012 because bol bachchan (102 cr) and son of sardar (106 cr) mark at indian box office you always lia

  • Anil breaker . . U said al masala movies wil work so this is not a proper logical ans to it and al 3 jthj sos and talaash was under performed avg hit movies and dnt change it by sayin al of them made thier mind to holiday flick okay

  • Anil breaker k 786 got 8cr openin on working day with 2800 screens and d2 got 19.5cr acc to boi with 3500 screens only diff is 700 screens but collection diff is ever more than double so this proves that masala movies wont work but if salman is in that movie then it works. .

  • salman bhaii will cont making his own bluckbuster till to reach total 10 bluckbuster.go the bluckbuster machine.

  • Where was salman khan’s fans before wanted movie??. When u compare an actor – then see how consistent he is since the begining. Only SRK stands!!! not even amitabh. Salman khan’s flop movies- what I mean is only 5-10 people sitting in the entire theater on the first day!!! Here is the list – Marie gold, Yuvraaj, Main aur mrs khanna, God tussi great ho…etc, and if you increase the audience to some 100’s on the first day then its – VEER, JAANEMAN(Remember the clash with King khan’s DON movie how the movie Jaaneman got vanished even with combined starcast of Salman khan+Akshay kumar). and many more….

You will never see people say ‘This is a comback movie for SRK’…this is used only for Salman khan. Because SRK is ruling bollywood since 90s!!!. Also you can measure the greatness of any actor by seeing how his films works outside india especially in countries where people doesnt understand hindi, these people love SRK’s movies just by seeing the sub-titiles!!! This is his greatness!!!!!

Shahrukh Khan – The only actor, king ever lived in Bollywood!!

  • Aamir Khan is one of my favorite actors ever. He is also a great director, I believe he will be on top 3 in 2013
