The Jungle Book beats FAN at the India Box Office

The Jungle Book in its second week has beaten Shah Rukh Khan’s FAN at the India box office. The Maneesh Sharma directed film, on its 5th day, has once again failed to sustain as it couldn’t take advantage of the holiday for Mahavir Jayanti.

For FAN, this is a clear indication of negative word-of-mouth because even films that receive mixed response show growth of 10-15% on a holiday. FAN seemed to be holding up better on Tuesday morning and noon (like we reported in the evening yesterday), but business at multiplexes came down in the night.

The Tuesday collections of FAN are likely to be at around the same level or little lower than Monday. On the other hand, The Jungle Book, which is carrying excellent word-of-mouth, has shown a big jump of more than 25%.

Only the Hindi collections of The Jungle Book (not including the English version, which is also doing well) will go on to become the 2nd highest grosser of the year – beating Kapoor & Sons, Neerja and could challenge the lifetime total of FAN if The Jungle Book crosses the 150 crore mark at the India box office.

It’s content and content alone that is winning at the box office this year. For the big superstars of our industry, it’s their script sense that will be put to a bigger test than their stardom.

  • @indicine please answer it what is the reason of flop of fan.. intolrence remark still affecting, because it’s hard for srk to come back now. He doesn’t have good release as Salman all may seem to be true, but they depend on content and further srk don’t have good release dates.. and also there are more haters who trend against him.. I think his career in India in almost come to end he should focus in Hollywood.. it’s not akki failure akki emerges as national hero.. who don’t have haters.. it’s very good for akki to come back but not for srk due to excess amount of haters

  • In 2012 aveners beat tezz lifetime by around 3 times. Did that make chris Evans or Robert jr. Bigger stars in India than ajay?? So y this crap around srk now. He is a megastar with excellent career so far. But at the end of the day he is also a human. He is also prone to fail at times. And the fact remains that his failure fan will score more than 80% of bolly hits & 95% of holly hits released in last 16 months. So stop this nonsense around SRK & bollywood

  • Jai ho was utter crap, a typical salman khan movie. Who cares how much it collected, none of us will see any of that money. Fan is a mediocre movie, with good performamce by srk as gaurav.

    Stop being such fanboys.

  • feeling sad for fans reaponse.. its gud that he has given really gud performance…bt lately there has been lots of negativity around srk.. whether it was the statement on intolerance…or dilwales collection..he has to behave responsiblly.bcz generel public dont see what he meant by that statement and not…they only react on news.if 5 or 6 peple talking negatively about that controvercy its bound to happen.simple thing is to stay away…gud luck srk ..

  • you are taking about content and here PRDP minting more than 200 crore domestic on salman khan star power alone

  • The end of SRK in bollywood. SRK should retires from bollywood.
All these years, he use to purchase awards, bribe media for making him super star bribe in ipl matches to wins.

  • Marking all comments of all people who are saying SRK is finished. Lets talk soon. You don’t know what SRK is made of. He will bounce back much more strongly. Wait for Raees.

  • WELL DONE INDIAN AUDIENCE..YOU PROVED ONCE AGAIN THAT YOU DESERVE FILMS LIKE PREM RATAN DHAN PAYO AND DHOOM 3 ONLY…

  • @Indicine the talk of Hollywood becoming a threat to Bollywood is baseless, although we cannot deny the fact that Hollywood is stronger than ever in India and it will continue to grow in leaps and bounds. Especially after the multiplex revolution Hollywood movies are more accessible to general public and the big movies are getting ample screens too. So as of now it is very much a given that all the superhero movies of Marvel and DC will have decent to good collections in India and some of them will easily go on and become BBs or Superhits.

Here I guess most of the people who are posting ‘Hollywood taking over Bollywood’, ‘Hollywood is a threat’ and all are guys who actually doesn’t know much about the Hollywood industry. Hollywood also has a similar pattern of Bollywood with most of their movies becoming flops / disasters / avg hits. And the percentage of movies that actually becomes blockbusters are very less if you consider the total no of movies that gets released in Hollywood every year. Naturally the biggest blockbusters of Hollywood will score in every market in the world..be it Asia, Middle East, Africa, Far East…only thing is now they have more penetration in Indian market and if Bollywood keeps churning out mediocre stuff then the audience obviously will be paying their hard earned money to watch a quality Hollywood movie than a mediocre Bollywood movie regardless of the star power in the Bollywood movie. FAN vs Jungle Book is the classic example for it.

Now it will be interesting to see how ‘Captain America : Civil War’ will fare at Indian BO next month as the independent reviews from the critics after the special screenings says it is one of the best ever from Marvel Cinematic Universe.

  • @team indicine and as usual u hv to take a dig at my comment. U ppl know much more abt trade than me so u should know that Hollywood’s contribution to indian market is still a mere 12-13% of annual collection. Yes penetratio of a Hollywood film has increased hugely as shown by avengers ff7 jurraisc world collection bt rest of the films still score poorly.

So unless v make too many craps or niche films Hollywood will remain a bachcha in Indian BO. And remember this jungle book has been helped by our industry to score this much. Priyanka nana om puri etc dubbed for d Hindi version that made the dubbing look so high quality and jungle book was deeply rooted to our culture as well as childhood anyways.

Tell me where were u guys when 2nd highest holly grosser ever star wars scored a pathetic 18cr at Indian BO or blockbuster deadpool earned a mere 34cr despite being distributed by the same banner as neerja in india.
Where were u when specter and MI despite scoring a btr day1 than drishyam ended up scoring half of drishyam lifetime???
Where were u when iron man3 or 300 sequel despite opening bigger than aashiqui2 & queen on d same day ended up scoring half of their bolly counterparts lifetime???

All these ppl & trade like u guys ignore these 95% of cases where bolly destroys holly at d Indian bo as well as ignore the Hollywood’s limited contribution to Indian BO and only bother to publish articles praise Hollywood when once in a while a hollywood movie perform brilliantly…!!!

Sorry if i was rude to u but as a fan if Bollywood it hurts when our own ppl look down at our industry for meaningless reasons

    • @Arjun Fan, doesn’t matter. Distributors now trust big Hollywood films more than Hindi films. Risk element is far less. For Hollywood, Indian market is insignificant, doesn’t even contribute 1%. But the ONLY film that has worked at single screens and mass centres this year is Jungle Book. Every Hindi film has failed, including Fan, Neerja, Airlift. Even at states like UP and Bihar, these are core Hindi film markets.

  • @indicine so wats the harm in jungle book doing well?? Y can’t v b happy with the fact that public and exhibitors got to rejoice bcz of this film. And if 1 jungle book can make trade loose faih in Bollywood that gvs them 15-17 successful films every year and contributes to 85-90% of hindi bo then nahi chaiye aise trade ka support.lol

  • It makes me feel extremely sad as well as laugh on reading ur previous comment that trade now has more faith in big holly films than Hindi films bcz of superb performance of 3 holly films this year. If this is their real thinking then they r only digging their own grave.

  • Now even I feel bad to bash Srk & his fans. From here only 2 things are possible:

    1. Srk losing stardom and may slip into Akki / Ajay category leaving Aamir, Salman & Hrithik as Top 3.

    2. Only good thing can happen and it can’t get worse than this hoping Srk to be back in Top 3.

    All the best !!!!!!!

  • @indicine and also do remember that while holly business has grown in bolly business has also grown overseas. All 4 hits this year did well overseas. Both dilwale & bajirao scored 100cr+ at overseas. Salmans mvz r performing way btr than wat they used 2 do previously. Aamirs films r doing 100cr in china in chineese dubbed versions. In last 16 months as .many as 12-13 films hv done well in overseas market.

So v should welcome Hollywood’s growth in our market and take this competition in a +ve way to make better cinema in greater numbers instead of calling it as ‘threat’ ‘holly overpowers bolly’ type cheap statements. And i m 200% sure that despite this growth Hollywood’s contribution to Indian market will remain below 15% bcz Bolly has begun this year very well & most upcoming films this year have gd mass appeal

  • @Tausif.. The jungle book getting massive response from all over the world. The movie allready collected over 300 million US dollars worldwide in just 4 days with massive 103 million US dollars opening from north america. Like India movie is also get huge start from china too. So movie is getting blockbuster response from all over.

  • Indicine its not only the content of thee jungle book but the love for this series as many of us have grown up watching this!

  • Yo baby Fan has recovered it’s cost by collecting
1.23 billion wirldwide in just 6 days !! what else
    you want baby !!
fan movie is bore but srk’s Acting is
    commendable #nodoubt!!

  • @ Indicine, cut back to a decade, when huge retain chains and malls were coming to India, and the media was going blah blah on how the local shops would be shut down in few years…….but lo and behold…..nothing happend. The local baniya is still running his shop and more successfully than ever before.

Hollywood is good and big, but because they have all the money for this kind of movie spectale…….just like those glitzy malls…….but Indians still buy a major chunk from the local baniya and local markets……!!

Also, kindly note, that majority of these malls were closed in a few years, just like @arjun youngistaan point out that many hit hollywood movies never made it even 50 cr in India.

Yes, let us appreciate that hollywood is doing good……and with their success Bollywood is also learning the changing pulse of Indian moviegoers and catering to its needs…….No wonder movies like Krrish and Robot are doing good…..they have used the hollywood style and indianised it to local taste…

Competition is good, it is healthy, but no way Indian movies are in danger……..the biggest thing the world will ever learn from India is that no matter what or who comes to India…..we will survive……we take their best, leave the bad…..and carry on.!!!! History is witness to it, that this country has seen the highest number of invadors of different region, culture and ethinicity……but they have all gone and we have adopted the best and still going strong with a culture that is thousands of years old…….We adapt and we survive……the basic human nature.

Our film industry is our pride…..the bollywood, the loud-tamil-telugu movies, the sutle beautiful malaylam movies….the brilliant marathi movies….the punjabi….the bengali ones……We love them…..no one can change it.

    Just my two cents.

  • Fully agree with Arjun… One huge success cannot make Hollywood bigger / more reliable than Bollywood in India…

Fact is that Jungle Book had universal appeal, childhood connect for Indians & good content and that is why it did well… That does not mean Hollywood will rule…

Fan is actually a bad movie (only core fans can tolerate glorification of a single person) and has done badly… Excuses like No Heroine, no Songs, no Holidays are applicable to Baby, partly to Airlift, Neerja (no Hero forget about Heroine) & Jungle Book as well…

Fact is that expectations from Fan (about Quality & not Numbers) were very high. Most of Reviewers went with the flow and rated it good. But a movie should be reviewed from point of view of Neutral Viewers & not hard core fans. Fan for a neutral viewer is rubbish… Period.

  • Thing is ..he is right…in heartland people may not get attracted to come to theatres to watch a movie wdout song in good numbers but this dsadvantage is negated by d fact dat multiplex audience may b more xcited to watch in theatres as it promises to offer smthn dffrnt unusual….but now d filmakers hv to really commit to dat fact and b honest wd dr movie….here in fan..illogical thngs r in abundance…dese thbgs audience may ignore or tolerate if its a masala movie…but whn u claim to mk a intellectual dffrnt good mivie dese thngz are hard to overlook as an audience….not to mention action sequences are large ..like any commercial movie so treatment u r giving like a commercial movie esp in 2nd half….while claiming ur product is niche unusual diffrnt….total confusion…..movie wld hv bn in plus if treatment screenplay was consistent logical…and not come wd such a big release …kp screen count lower..( just my 2 cents)

  • @jc excellent comment. U hv just hit d nail on it’s head. Last year holly performed well in d summer bt july onwards i don’t think they even contributed to 7% of Indian bo. This year also they performed poorly apart from jungle bk & d upcoming civil war. Luk at so called blockbuster deadpool & Hollywoods 2nd highest grossing film ever star wars. They earned mere 34cr & 18cr respectively here bt indicine bothered to ignore them. Oscar winning films like spotlight revenant couldn’t cross d 7cr mark. Vfx loaded oscAr winnig film starring tom hardy or martian earned a mere 20-24cr at d Indin bo. Lol

  • This proves that the so called SRK fans only get online and make a lot of noise. Even they did not go to the halls and spend money on their “Super Star” “Performance oriented” movie.
I hope other stars take note of this and pay more attention on what films they choose. Public has started saying no to “All style-no substance” stuff.

  • Fan is not a film, it is a realistic story about a psycho fan..S P L E N D I D is the word to describe FAN.another lifetime best performance by our very own SHAH sir.

  • Looks like SRK’s time is over now, with Akshay getting steadier and Hrithik gearing up with the magnum opus Mohenjodaro(touted to be Bollywood’s answer to Baahubali!), it seems he’ll badly slide down and I hope Ajay doesn’t beat him this Diwali as that will be the worse thing to happen.

  • @MYANMAR YANGON

JAI HO full masti masala bromance masala songs collected only 8cr on Tuesday
FAN dark thriller no heroine no song no masala collected only 6cr on Tuesday

only 2 Cr difference between LALLU’s best and SRKs worst………..think about that! how big of a star SRK is compared to remakes making virgin LALLU.

  • If FAN is not made to collection – why is SRK charged money to do this film. He should do it for free.
YRF will get 40-50 crores from satellite rights and this movie will be declared semi – hit since it will recover money.

TELL SRK TO NOT CHARGE MONEY FOR FAN.
