Sultan Budget, Screens, Hit or Flop: Business Economics

The biggest film of the year is here and expectations are sky-high from Salman Khan once again. ‘Sultan’ is expected to be a box office blockbuster and anything less than Rs 225 crore (net, domestic) will be considered a disappointing total.

Of course, the trade has pinned its hope on the film collecting more than Rs 300 crore – much like Bajrangi Bhaijaan during Eid last year.

Since the entire film has been shot in India, Sultan isn’t a very expensive film. The cost of production, marketing and print combined is around 90 crore (trade estimate, not confirmed by Yash Raj Films). This does not include Salman’s acting fee, which is assumed to be the value of satellite rights. However, the superstar will also take a share from the profits.

Recovery will be easy for the film, but for event films like Sultan, it’s also about meeting trade expectations and getting recognised as a major success (in other words, we call it perception hit).

Sultan Screen Count – 4100 screens.

Sultan Business Economics:

  • Total Investment: ?90 crore (cost of production, advertising, print)
  • Satellite rights: ?55-60 crore (Sony, assumed to be Salman’s acting fee / marketing value)
  • Recovery from various other rights and branding: ?15 crore

How much does Sultan need to collect for different box office verdicts (approximate figures):

  • Sultan will recover costs if it does ? 150 crore
  • If Sultan collects more than ? 160 crore: HIT
  • If Sultan collects more than ? 200 crore: Super Hit
  • If Sultan collects more than ? 240 crore: Blockbuster
  • If Sultan collects more than ? 300 crore: All Time Blockbuster

Note: Verdict will vary depending on how the film performs in the overseas markets too.

  • @Indicine but where are your final FBO predictions which were to come tonight ???
Eagerly waiting as it’s offical now that Eid is on 7 July and Sultan is a non-holiday release…
Can it still nett 45 crores on opening day??What will be the difference if Eid would be celebrated today??

  • All auto-drivers left no stones unturned to declare April 15 as a holiday (Ram Navmi) though all private firms were open that day. Moreover all government offices were open except few state government offices in Bihar, Maharashtra etc.
But now, though there is an official holiday on July 06 (declared by government India) and all the private offices including the IT firms (major spectator of multiplexes) , too, will remain close, they are trying hard to declare July 06 as a normal weekday.
    Have some shame you losers.

  • No doubt,Sultan will take a fantastic opening tomorrow and will beat highest opening weekend (3 days)collection of HNY 108 crores.but according to my prediction It will underperform after 5 days extended weekend as most likely sultan have a mixed to negative word of mouth similar to HNY and PRDP.it will collect 300 crores if content was good like BB.

  • Sultan even with Bad WOM it is going to be a hit film for sure but average superhit/blockbuster movie! & with positive WOM ATBB for sure.

  • Reviews from uk & UAE are out and they have given thumbs up to sultan…. now we just need to wait for hurricane at indian box office from tomorrow. Salman will rock the box office as always

  • I wonder what would have happened to Lolman’s career, if Loltan clashed with Raees. Last time, twice he got crushed when he dared to clash with King Khan(Don vs Jaan-E-Mann and CDI vs marigold). Even Akshay and Ajay trashed him.

  • Salman Khan is yet to give a 18 crore opening day collection on non – holiday (I.e.without EDX ).

  • Only 4100 screens…U guys had said that it is targeting 4500 screens and also may become the biggest release of all time then how come only 4100 screens..??

  • Lallu logic chapter 2 :

    1. Next day of Diwali is a festive release (though Lakshmi pooja and actual Diwali takes place on previous day itself).

    2. But next or previous day of Eid should be declared as a normal release.

Somebody please explain these fools that it’s not about the festival but it’s about the holiday. Next day of Diwali fetches good numbers because that day is a holiday.
Similarly, it doesn’t matter on which date Eid is being celebrated, but when the holiday of Eid is due, that matters.

And now don’t come with the theory that since Muslims will be busy celebrating Eid they won’t turn up to the theatres. They contribute only 15-20% of India’s population and then it’s not like all 20% of them watch the movies into theatres.
So it will hardly create any impact.

  • Lallu logic chapter 3:

    1. When we have to boast about back-to-back 200cr grossers of our non-actor khan, we will refer indicine and ignore BOI (since Prem Bartan dho ke aayo is not a 200 CR grosser according to that fraud BOI).

    2. But when we have to hide the incompetency of our non-actor khan of not breaking a 2 years old record despite of favourable releases, we will suddenly rush towards BOI.

    Hail lallu logic, hail Lalluland!

  • indicine has set a huge number for Sultan to be a blockbuster- 240cr really?
kick’s budget was more than Sultan but Kick is a blockbuster at 233cr but Sultan will be @ 240cr how?

  • I think sultan got a huge benefit to shifting Eid on 7th July because the advance booking tickets are sold out and that is not refundable if a person not going to watch tomorrow due to cancelation of holiday yet her money will added in sultan opening day collection.
