Sultan Budget, Screens, Hit or Flop: Business Economics

The biggest film of the year is here and expectations are sky-high from Salman Khan once again. ‘Sultan’ is expected to be a box office blockbuster and anything less than Rs 225 crore (net, domestic) will be considered a disappointing total.

Of course, the trade has pinned its hope on the film collecting more than Rs 300 crore – much like Bajrangi Bhaijaan during Eid last year.

Since the entire film has been shot in India, Sultan isn’t a very expensive film. The cost of production, marketing and print combined is around 90 crore (trade estimate, not confirmed by Yash Raj Films). This does not include Salman’s acting fee, which is assumed to be the value of satellite rights. However, the superstar will also take a share from the profits.

Recovery will be easy for the film, but for event films like Sultan, it’s also about meeting trade expectations and getting recognised as a major success (in other words, we call it perception hit).

Sultan Screen Count – 4100 screens.

Sultan Business Economics:

  • Total Investment: ?90 crore (cost of production, advertising, print)
  • Satellite rights: ?55-60 crore (Sony, assumed to be Salman’s acting fee / marketing value)
  • Recovery from various other rights and branding: ?15 crore

How much does Sultan need to collect for different box office verdicts (approximate figures):

  • Sultan will recover costs if it does ? 150 crore
  • If Sultan collects more than ? 160 crore: HIT
  • If Sultan collects more than ? 200 crore: Super Hit
  • If Sultan collects more than ? 240 crore: Blockbuster
  • If Sultan collects more than ? 300 crore: All Time Blockbuster

Note: Verdict will vary depending on how the film performs in the overseas markets too.

  • Now it is officially confirmed by Supreme Court of India that Eid & Holiday for Eid both are on 7th July 2016.
So, Sultan will be a Non-Holiday Release & it is all set to beat Dhoom 3’s Highest Non Holiday opening day record & that too by huge margin.

  • Blockbuster yar…Confirm
    @Indicine
U said that Fan will be Blockbuster at 210cr with budget of 105 cr

    • @Moh Movies, you should read the article again. Sultan including overseas will recover costs even if it collections less than 100 crore. It can’t be a loss making film. But there is something called perception and expectation. You can’t declare such big movies as hits at 70-100 crore, just because it’s profitable.

  • Sultan success hojaye toh industry ka hi acha hai as last 3 months hv been mediocre but upcoming films in 2016 r high voltage.

  • Sultan is the tough film to predict, i think 170-220cr is the bar for it, it can also go as high as 350+ if content is similar to Bajrangi Bhaijaan.

  • The real King is coming.. The term real is used becoz of a self proclaimed garbage king

  • The opening will be 35-36 cr.
If content is not upto the mark, the movie will fall flat on its face, and eventually fail to recover costs.

    day 4-32(2nd saturday)
    day 5-34(sunday)

  • Long Eid weekend and no major releases in coming weeks will ensure it a HIT/Super HIT verdict or else we all know the aukat of non-actor khan without holiday weekends.

@Being illiterate Agarwal 09:58 pm : Supreme court never declares government holidays, nor it determines the date of a particular festival. They have many other things to take care of under their jurisdiction. So keep this mindless theory with yourself.

Yes, there is another news related to supreme court and non-actor khan. The honourable supreme court has accepted the plea of government of Maharashtra (challenging the earlier verdict of Bombay session court of non-actor khan’s acquittal).
So all non-actor fans, start counting your days . Because sooner or later, Justice certainly takes place.
