One of the most awaited films of 2014, a film that reunites the ‘Main Hoon Naa’ and ‘Om Shanti Om’ actor-director duo of Shahrukh Khan and Farah Khan will not release on 23rd October. The film which was earlier scheduled to hit screens on Diwali day, has been postponed by a day. The multi-starrer will now release on 24th October. An official announcement on the same will be made on 14th August.
A source close to the film has also revealed that it was SRK’s decision to release the film on 24th. While most of his blockbusters have released on Diwali, the idea to release the film a day after Diwali is simple – to break opening day box office records.
“Farah wanted to release on Diwali day. It was Shah Rukh’s call to hold back by a day. We were all surprised considering his big blockbusters including Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge were released on Diwali. But I think Shah Rukh feels audiences don’t want to step out of their homes on Diwali day.He feels they like to do Laxmi puja on that day at home.” a source was quoted as saying.
While there are reports that the makers could organise ‘preview shows’ after 6PM on Diwali, Happy New Year has every chance of going on to be the first film to collect more than 40 crore on its opening day.
SRK’s 2011 release Ra One was one of his most poorly received films ever, yet the film easily broke the record for the highest single day collections on its second day. Ra One released on Diwali, Happy New Year will release a day after.
Directed by Farah Khan and produced by Gauri Khan, Happy New Year stars Shahrukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, Sonu Sood, Boman Irani and Vivaan Shah.

I knew this way before.Srk don’t have courage for Pre Diwali release like Salman and Aamir whom movies were Pre Eid and Pre Christmas release and with this decision Dhoom 3 lifetime record is looking safe now even Kick lifetime collections will be very difficult to cross for Happy new lungi.lol
Diwali day is holiday in most of the states. But people prefer to stay at home with family and do laxmi pooja for improvement of their household. After noon, people hardly go out to watch movies. In 80’s and 70’s most cinema theater remain closed from diwali afternoon.
Nowadays, breaking records become so important that srk will not take any chance to release his movie on diwali day which is held on 23 oct. On 24 oct. it is not a big holiday on Gobardhan pooja. But still most indian household take holiday and watch movies with family and friend. I dont know about long term effect, that depends on movie quality. But breaking first day record of Dhoom 3,( 35 cr) is a good decision. If happy new year release on 4500 screen, irrespective of anything it will comfortably gross near to 40 cr.
Lets wait n watch…it will be an entertaining film,thats for sure…

Still i believe, Bang Bang and Haider getting most profitable release date of this year with 6 back to back holidays. If Bang Bang is atleast an average fare, it will surely hit 200 cr.

I say this is a bad decision. He is concerned about the opening day record. It can collect pretty good on the first day but from the second day, it will fall badly. Seems not concerned for lifetime. Lifetime collections less than 160 Crores.

It might be a good idea to release on 24th as he intends to break the biggest opening day and single day records..but I hope SRK realises that he is loosing at least 20 crores which the movie could collect on diwali day due to this postponement..

A pretty wise decision considering the fact that evening shows will be hugely affected because of Diwali Pooja, whereas next day of Diwali will be highly profitable because a large chunk of audiences step out from their homes for shopping and movies .
I think 35+ cr opening day looks quite possible now.
@danny : hats off to your intellectuality. Are you so ignorant to differentiate between a non-holiday and Diwali release? A non-holiday release can still have a huge opening depending upon the hype and WOM of the movie, but a Diwali release? No way..! Whether WOM or hype is good, still it can’t get a huge opening, because population of India comprises 85% of Hindus and they won’t step out from their homes because of that Pooja and it will affect the opening day collections.
This small thing didn’t enter into your mind?

Releasing HNY on 24th October is a very good idea because on the day of Diwali the night shows are affected badly . If the movie releases on 24th October then definitely makers are looking to break all records because they know if it can break the single day record of Dhoom 3 then it can also break all lifetime records .
