Rustom vs Mohenjo Daro: Box Office Clash Analysis

A couple of weeks ago, Ashutosh Gowarikar’s Mohenjo Daro was one of the most awaited films of 2016. The trailer was expected to make a huge impact, giving the Hrithik Roshan starrer a big advantage in the box office clash against Akshay Kumar’s Rustom.

After all, on paper, Mohenjo Daro ticked almost every box. A talented and more established director. Bigger budget and scale. A bigger box office star, who does fewer films. The genre was also in Mohenjo Daro’s favour, after the success of ‘Baahubali’ and ‘Bajirao Mastani’.

But now that the trailers of both films are out, the tables have turned and the clash is now going to be much closer.

Rustom is leading at this point in time, because the costs are much lower and the trailer has managed to find appreciation – both with the audience and trade. This will result in Rustom getting higher number of screens than it previously would (not compared to Mohenjo Daro), it’s also likely to get a decent single-screen release. The film could also get equal number of shows at multiplexes, which will be a massive advantage.

As things stand today, Rustom has already won half the battle with a solid trailer. Mohenjo Daro will now rely on music to increase the buzz and post-release, the content to click big time.

The math is simple, to recover costs, both films combined have to collect more than Rs 230 crore at the box office. The ratio will be 65:35. Mohenjo Daro will not only have to take the lead against Rustom, it’ll have to nearly double its collections.

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time Ashutosh Gowariker is taking on a biggie. Exactly 15 years ago, Lagaan released with Gadar. Gowarikar lost the clash, but his film did well enough to recover costs and Lagaan went on to become only the 3rd Oscar nominated Indian film.

Rustom doesn’t even need to be a Gadar, not even close, but Mohenjo Daro will have to match or get close to the quality of Lagaan.

After a long time, saw a trailer that made me get up and take a 2nd look.
    @akshaykumar #RustomTrailer

  • Lultrom the masalaniac…do your idol have guts to do the such films you have mentioned… Oh he can’t you better know after all you guys are truely inspired by hit and run arrogant silent killer idol….

  • Will definitely watch Rumtom……..at least for 2 time…….The trailer done the trick rest will assured by good music……….Big opening on card for rustom.

  • @nipun Actually I watched Rustom trailer after reading your comment and I recalled what you said was so right , I also felt the same . And i love reading your comments . You never seem biased or get in stupid fanwars . According to me you are the most sensible person in this site

  • Mohenjo Daro is Distrubuted by UTV motion picture ( One of the biggest production house )
No worries Hrithikian MD will get 3500 screens. If Bang Bang can earn 181 crore with 3300 screens, 200 crore is easy task for MD With same number of screens.

  • Remember Airlift got only 2500 screens due to clash with Kya kool hai hum 3 .
Stop dreaming about maximum no. of screens, rustom will get only 1500-1800 screens.
Hrithik is making his comeback after 22 months and Akshay is returning back aftern 69 days.

  • Its not only about Domestic collection , MD will collect 120+ in oversees.
Hrithik is going to promote MD in oversees market.

  • @AB Excuse on 13th August? As far as I know the verdict of both movies will out after 2 weeks of their release so why you are focusing on 13th August?
Oh you r focusing on opening day . Than you should be smart enough that Ppl waits for reviews for less commercial movies, the genre has not universal appeal so there is no competition of opening day as mohnjdro has best genre nd he is coming after 2 years ,akki just after 2 months…lifetime collection matters only in this clash ! Knuclehead….!

  • Till now Rustom has an edge but music of MD will be superb as A R Rehman always delivers for such movies-Even Rustom music will be good as Ankit Tiwari is in good form these days.but A R Rehman is an incomparable man in music-I think MD makers may release another trailer to increase the buzz

  • @indicine: I posted a comment related to MohenjoDaro offering anything new! Can’t see the comment now.

  • My verdict –
    Mohenjo daro-
If word of mouth is exceptional – 190-200cr
If word of mouth is good – 150-160cr
If word of mouth is average or below average – 85-90cr

    Rustom –
If word of mouth is exceptional – 95-100cr
If word of mouth is good – 65-70cr
If word of mouth is average or below average- 50-55cr

As a lot of factors are involved in prediction like screen count in the first week as well as second week such as if a movie performs exceptionally than other one then it will retain maximum screens in multiplex and the single screen factor also comes out to play while predicting these films…

So these are just mere my own predictions…hope that both movie will be good and hit the bulls eye..

  • Agar Ruston solo release bhi hua hota to bhi 100 cr ws difficult task n mohenjodaro ke saath to max 60 cr.. Agar MD one time watch bhi hua to 150cr…

  • Nice analysis.. I think Rustom will collect 105-120 and will be Superhit due to restricted budget of as low as 30-40 Cr. On the other hand MJ will collect 120-140 Cr & will be a bellow average grosser.

  • Looks like indicine is quite sad with the Rustom trailer coming as better than MD. Lol. Atleast post the trailer review

  • Everyone is giving their opinion on both the movies box office performance. Let me give my take.

Everyone expected great and grand battle scenes like Bahubali and Bajirao Mastani, in Mohenjo Daro, which is not shown in the trailer(most probubly there is no grand war, if there was, they definitely would show it in trailer). Thats why people are disappointed big time I think. Personally I think it was a superb trailer with the great dialogues, and great story involving a secret just like Bahubali. The lines Hrithik saying ‘ye nagar/sheher mujhe jana pehchana kiu lagta hain!’ and ‘ye mera sheher hain, Mohenjo Daro!!’ instantly got me excited to the movie’s story. So, from my point of view, this movie is going to be loved by people and going to do very well. I am going with 180 cr(around it) for Mohenjo Daro.

    On the other hand,..
People are saying that Airlift and Baby trailers were better than Rustom trailer. I completely disagree. I found Rustom trailer more promising just because that, it doesn’t involve in gory scenes. When I watched Baby trailer, I knew that family audience isn’t going to watch it because of the gore and slaps one after one after one(towards the end of the trailer)…..
And I can’t remember why, but Airlift trailer gave me a feel that this is going to be a gory movie. And I knew that families are going to skip it. They did, although to a lesser extent, maybe because in the movie there wasn’t much gore….
In Rustom trailer, I just found a scene of violence involving a murder with 3 gunshots. Its so common(gunshot killing) in hindi films that this will not keep families away from this movie. And the trailers proceeding gave me a feel that this movie will have so mane turns that it will be in the league of Aitraaz and Damini. The trailer is so goddamn good!! I am going with 130 cr plus for Rustom.

Indicine can publish this comment as post if they think it is worth reading. I will be glad.

  • @indicine: Don’t you think 134 crores is a bit less for MohenjoDaro?
Bajirao Mastani despite an opening of 11 crores and Clash with highly awaited Dilwale did 187 crores thanks to its good WOM.
So even MohenjoDaro can do the same with good WOM.

But in predictions, we should consider decent own. So MohenjoDaro is likely to do around 150 crores with Krrish 3 kind of WOM.

What’s the reason of predicting this less?
Is it because akkians call you biased towards Hrithik? There has to be some reasons behind ur predictions?
I hope you are going to reply.

    • Can’t compare Krrish 3 to Mohenjo Daro. Solo release, festive weekend, huge franchise and film with wider appeal. The prediction is based on research, we don’t just randomly quote a figure.

  • @indicine: I am not saying MohenjoDaro will do as much as Krrish 3..
Krrish 3 had decent WOM(You can know it from the trend). What should be the prediction of MohenjoDaro considering its WOM to be decent ?150 crores around! no?
