A couple of weeks ago, Ashutosh Gowarikar’s Mohenjo Daro was one of the most awaited films of 2016. The trailer was expected to make a huge impact, giving the Hrithik Roshan starrer a big advantage in the box office clash against Akshay Kumar’s Rustom.
After all, on paper, Mohenjo Daro ticked almost every box. A talented and more established director. Bigger budget and scale. A bigger box office star, who does fewer films. The genre was also in Mohenjo Daro’s favour, after the success of ‘Baahubali’ and ‘Bajirao Mastani’.
But now that the trailers of both films are out, the tables have turned and the clash is now going to be much closer.
Rustom is leading at this point in time, because the costs are much lower and the trailer has managed to find appreciation – both with the audience and trade. This will result in Rustom getting higher number of screens than it previously would (not compared to Mohenjo Daro), it’s also likely to get a decent single-screen release. The film could also get equal number of shows at multiplexes, which will be a massive advantage.
As things stand today, Rustom has already won half the battle with a solid trailer. Mohenjo Daro will now rely on music to increase the buzz and post-release, the content to click big time.
The math is simple, to recover costs, both films combined have to collect more than Rs 230 crore at the box office. The ratio will be 65:35. Mohenjo Daro will not only have to take the lead against Rustom, it’ll have to nearly double its collections.
Interestingly, this isn’t the first time Ashutosh Gowariker is taking on a biggie. Exactly 15 years ago, Lagaan released with Gadar. Gowarikar lost the clash, but his film did well enough to recover costs and Lagaan went on to become only the 3rd Oscar nominated Indian film.
Rustom doesn’t even need to be a Gadar, not even close, but Mohenjo Daro will have to match or get close to the quality of Lagaan.

And the rating I had given to both MD and Rustom are 3.8 and 4 respectively based on trailer.for me Rustom should get 4+ but I limited it to 4 because rest will be shown on theatre.
And in Mahenjodaro trailer too,I praised almost all of it’s positive aspects.but at the Same time I said the same here which I said there—-MD story wise looks little dull because it shown a lov story rather than an extra ordinary warfare kind of scenes.which may disappointed tge audience ,the Same I repeated here,so what’s wrong I did kindly tell me!!!!!
And yeah I too admitted I never expected a trailer of this kind from rustom which too thrilled me and made me excited too.so I wrote that compared to Rustom,MD seems dull as expected.did it has any link with my praising of MD trailer in MD trailer page.
Trailer Comparison wise I said MD is little behind Rustom that’s all.I didn’t said that MD will be bad movie.

Common guys what is this That rustom won the half battle. Seriously. Rustom didn’t won any battle yet. Even though its trailer telecast on zee network but that doesn’t mean it will excite those peoples who tunes TV channels on prime time. I still think that Both MJD and Rustom won’t open in the way Indicine or trade is assuming. We have seen how people on social sites makes great impact on day 1 at boxoffice.
MJD had a negative point as its trailer didn’t made much impact on neutral fan base while Rustom had created that impact but as it is not coming solo that impact won’t create that huge difference. No doubt that Rustom will gather huge critical appreciation but will it get same from audience that will be the key. On the other hand MJD critical reception will be mix but if it have enough masala to entertain audience than it won’t hurt much by rustom.
All and All only MJD can stop itself to being a success not Rustom. As the clash is not same as Dilwale vs BM. Even in that clash Dilwale opened huge as compare to BM with limited screen space.
Wait for Aug 12th instead of deciding who won or loose.

I still think that unnecessary negativity created for Mohenjodaro despite that the trailer wasn’t bad but expectation are more. Never seen any highly anticipated trailer got this kind of negativity in these time who doesn’t fall into masala/comdedy genre.
Regarding trade we all know how intelligent these guys are. Still remember they have doubt that PK can do max 200cr on Christmas 2014. ROFL.

Rustome trailer has been more impressive, and I do believe the number of shows at multiplex for Rustom can be higher because of less running time. Ashutosh’s movie are usually longer than general cinema, thus, it might come as an added disadvantage for him along with the weak trailer. The things that favor MohenjoDaro is music (might be), because the composer is the best this country has to offer Rahman.
Fingers crossed, want both films to do justice but an unwilling sense says Rustom will beat MD. :)

Hrithik congratulated Akshay on #Rustam Trailor.This is gesture of a real Superstar and a great human being, a healthy compilation is always good. I always belive that Hrithik Roshan is a true blue Superstar material but unfortunately never got the due he deserves, even tough I am Akshay Kumar Fan I will Watch #MOHENJODARO before #RUSTOM, I am sure I am not hurting any Akshay Fan. People outside social media do exist too. Rustom trailer has received well and has also got benefitted by the negativity around MohenjoDaro trailer. But it is the case across social media mainly.
Many people have liked MohenjoDaro trailer too and it is not likely to be a regular Bollywood stuff like Rustom. So if MohenjoDaro content clicks, it will easily do 180 crores+ like Bajirao Mastani which competed with much waited Dilwale and it opened to only 11 crores. MohenjoDaro is likely to open better and it is not competing with any very much commercial movie like Dilwale. Rustom is definitely not a biggie like MohenjoDaro, Dangal, Sultan and Shivaay. It has just got enough buzz thanks to the clash. And if its fairly good trailer which doesn’t offer anything new will excite the audience to watch it in theatre is another question.
Yes, in the end, it’s the content which will decide MohenjoDaro’s fate. I am expecting people to enjoy MohenjoDaro in theatre thanks to its cinematography and storytelling skills of Gowariker. Also, people are likely to enjoy watching the adventurous journey of Salman, the fighting scenes with villains,Monsters , crocodile and horses, the beautiful statues and so on..
As for critics ratings. I am expecting MohenjoDaro to receive similar/better responses than Krrish 3. You may be surprised to see Krrish 3’s critics ratings which are marginally behind movies like Bajirao Mastani. But more important is audience responses. . I am expecting its WOM to be better than Hrithik ‘s last 3 films. Let’s see..
