Post IPL: No film has ever failed at the box office

When the first Indian Premiere League season began in 2008, it affected the business of Hindi films. The footfalls in theatres were considerably lower in those 2 months, which meant filmmakers 2009-onwards avoided releasing their films in April and May.

This dull phase gave birth to what we now call as the ‘Post IPL’ period, when a big film is released just after the conclusion of the IPL.The record of ‘Post IPL’ releases has been phenomenal since 2009 – 5 Blockbusters, 1 Super Hits, 2 Hits and more importantly zero failures.

Kabir Khan’s New York starring John Abraham, Katrina Kaif (at the peak of her career) and Neil Nitin Mukesh was a runaway hit at the box office.

2010 was a blockbuster year as ‘Raajneeti’ just fell short of becoming only the third film (after Ghajini and 3 Idiots) to collect Rs 100 crore.

In 2011, it was Salman Khan’s turn to deliver his second blockbuster after the phenomenal success of ‘Dabangg’. 2012 gave Akshay Kumar his biggest blockbuster and biggest grosser in Rowdy Rathore. It remains his biggest grosser to date.

2013 was the biggest year for ‘Post IPL’ releases as Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone returned with Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and broke every non-holiday record that existed back then. It remains the highest non-festive (without Eid, Diwali, Christmas advantage) grosser to date.

2014 was comparitively a dull year, as ‘Holiday: A Solider Is Never Off Duty’ did not open well at the box office, but with positive word-of-mouth the film went on to be Akshay’s 3rd 100 crore grosser. It was also the only year when there was a ‘year on year’ dip of 40%.

In 2015, Tanu Weds Manu Returns shocked the trade as the film went on to collect more than 150 crore at the domestic box office and Rs 250 crore worldwide.

The potential of this period is huge and it would probably rank just after ‘Diwali’ as the fourth most lucrative period to release films. ‘Housefull 3’ has every factor in its favour, including the added ‘franchise value’ – which is huge and something that last year’s Tanu Weds Manu Returns took advantage of. There hasn’t been a big release after ‘Baaghi’ and ‘FAN’ was probably the last film that opened well at the multiplexes.

The big question is, can ‘Housefull 3’ live upto expectations? Can it give Akshay Kumar his bigger opener and biggest grosser to date? And can it continue the record of no ‘Post IPL’ release ever failing at the box office?

  • Enjoyed yjhd. Modern day kuch kuch hota hai. My junior srk will destroy flop devgan this diwali

  • TWMR was definately the best film,it is already among the most loved films ever.
TWMR was the best film of 2015 after Bajtangi Bhaijaan.

  • High expectations from housefull 3: hope it doesnt turn out to be another “humshakals”(as It seems from songs).
Just want our akshay back (the comedy king) and if House full 3 emerges as a hit it will affect (positivly) hera perhi 3 and comedy genre will bounce back! !
    My predictions max 150-160 crs

  • Nice article Indicine. Those verdicts clearly show that this has been definitely a good period for movies. The minimum verdict is hit.

    My top 3 picks:

    1. Holiday
    2. TWMR
    3. Raajneeti

Expecting HF3 to be Akshays biggest grosser and cross 150 cr.

Honestly buzz around this movie looks to be a bit lower than expected. Or may be that is just a perception. But this is a very big movie no doubt and just needs to click with audience. Then no stopping it at box office.

  • Don’t agree with you indicine here. It’s definitely not that great release period as it may look like.
    Look at the films released.
Most of them were either very good films or either had big stars.
I don’t think a movie like Brothers or Fan would have been successful if released on post IPL.

  • @Fasal karela: what’s wrong with you? You keep bashing every other star..I know you are mental so I won’t bash srk coz of you.

  • Housefull 3 first review — 3 stars by Gulf UAE.
3 stars for a comedy movie is quite good actually.

  • Rowdy Rathore was a totaal package of action comedy emotion and a good story. Yeh Jawaani hai dewaani was fresh especially it music gave it a big boost. Holiday was a good thriller. Tanu weds mannu was very entertaining. The rest were Ok!

  • Already bad reviews. Farhad sajid are bullshit directors. Why akshay worked with them? Time for a new good comedy dorector.

  • I think the biggest comedy franchise will still remain Golmaal series installing its 4th franchise was to show how successful it has been . BolB had the best word of mouth Abhishek entry to bigger screen sucess with a 100 cr Hit began from there Also waiting to see Ajay Rohit combo after a while. He failed with Haklu . Talking of Housefull 3 I enjoyed housefull 1 only. I prefer Akshay Hey baby Hera Pheri Bb SIK. Fingers crossed for this one. The 3 characters can have perfect comic timing especially With Akshay on board

  • This time house full 3 will be flop. 1st flop movie post ipl.
    1st day-17 cr
    2nd day-12 cr
    3rd day-13 cr
    1st weekend-42 cr

    1st mon-4 cr
    1st tue-3 cr
    1st wed-2. 25 cr
    1st thu-1. 25 cr

    1st week-52. 5 cr

    2nd weekend-3 cr
    2nd week -4. 5 cr

    3rd week-50 lacs

    Total lifetime -57. 5 cr

    Verdict -flop

  • Only yjhd i liked my all time fav
Flop kumar lallu shaklukhan tictic ajay should learn something from ranbir

  • Worst films in this period were without question Joker Boys 2 maha crapfests ROWDY JOKER n Vacation….!

  • Indicine, Raajneeti didn’t released in post IPL period.
In 2010, Post IPL ended on 25th April and next release was Housefull (part 1) on 30th April. It was also a hit but Raajneeti was not a post IPL period film. Kindly correct.

  • House Empty 3 will do what Vacation did in 2014 n that is drop by atleast 40 in relation to last yrs phenomenon TWMR2- power of Joker Boy

  • @Chain Smoker lol who? The guy who gave industry’standard biggest disaster ever called Bombay velvet? Yup, you may call him junior SRK as SRK has also given industry’standard biggest disaster ever called Yehuda Luther JudaaI ke. Shivaay will crush tiny flop kid rabbit’so ae hit hai mushkil.

  • Expecting House Empty 3 to collect around 60cr thus returning Joker Boy to his 60cr club throne…!

  • @Babaji dint agree. Beside Ready Yjhd Rr holiday which other movies had big stars or stars in their movies ? Wrong look at the list again.

  • I genuinely hope that the film manages to entertain all sections of the audiences and become a hit.It is much required, and a massy Superstar like Akshay Kumar is expected to do so.I’m going first day first show.Hoping for the best!
