When the first Indian Premiere League season began in 2008, it affected the business of Hindi films. The footfalls in theatres were considerably lower in those 2 months, which meant filmmakers 2009-onwards avoided releasing their films in April and May.
This dull phase gave birth to what we now call as the ‘Post IPL’ period, when a big film is released just after the conclusion of the IPL.The record of ‘Post IPL’ releases has been phenomenal since 2009 – 5 Blockbusters, 1 Super Hits, 2 Hits and more importantly zero failures.
Kabir Khan’s New York starring John Abraham, Katrina Kaif (at the peak of her career) and Neil Nitin Mukesh was a runaway hit at the box office.
2010 was a blockbuster year as ‘Raajneeti’ just fell short of becoming only the third film (after Ghajini and 3 Idiots) to collect Rs 100 crore.
In 2011, it was Salman Khan’s turn to deliver his second blockbuster after the phenomenal success of ‘Dabangg’. 2012 gave Akshay Kumar his biggest blockbuster and biggest grosser in Rowdy Rathore. It remains his biggest grosser to date.
2013 was the biggest year for ‘Post IPL’ releases as Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone returned with Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and broke every non-holiday record that existed back then. It remains the highest non-festive (without Eid, Diwali, Christmas advantage) grosser to date.
2014 was comparitively a dull year, as ‘Holiday: A Solider Is Never Off Duty’ did not open well at the box office, but with positive word-of-mouth the film went on to be Akshay’s 3rd 100 crore grosser. It was also the only year when there was a ‘year on year’ dip of 40%.
In 2015, Tanu Weds Manu Returns shocked the trade as the film went on to collect more than 150 crore at the domestic box office and Rs 250 crore worldwide.
The potential of this period is huge and it would probably rank just after ‘Diwali’ as the fourth most lucrative period to release films. ‘Housefull 3’ has every factor in its favour, including the added ‘franchise value’ – which is huge and something that last year’s Tanu Weds Manu Returns took advantage of. There hasn’t been a big release after ‘Baaghi’ and ‘FAN’ was probably the last film that opened well at the multiplexes.
The big question is, can ‘Housefull 3’ live upto expectations? Can it give Akshay Kumar his bigger opener and biggest grosser to date? And can it continue the record of no ‘Post IPL’ release ever failing at the box office?

YEH JAWAANI HAI DEEWANI is the best post-IPL film period. You may be a hater of Ranbir, but you can take away the fact that YJHD is a modern day classic. It’s the Kuch Kuch Hota Hai of modern generation, everyone loves watching it again and again. I’m not a fan of Ranbir but that film inspired me a lot in many ways. I wish Bollywood start making many more films like YJHD.
Seriously speaking slap stick comedy is out of fashion and crapy so I don’t see House full 3 grossing much and may be a big failure. Music is also below expectations. Ud da Punjab is the best bet for the June 2016 bcoz it has good cast, great music, content and trailer was also great.

But this time no one can stop Akshay Kumar to Give a 200cr Big Blockbuster.

I like Rowdy Rathore & After that Holiday . Holiday suffered due to akki poor film like Outimd & boss & Khiladi 786 .
A really well written article kudos to you . But there is a slight mistake in 2014 Holiday and Filmistaan clashed with each other on 6th June and Holiday became a Hit and Filmistaan was a Flop you should add this too . The ‘Post IPL Season’ has been really successful and the reason is in this period schools and colleges are closed and also the summer season comes to an end in June which makes life easier for viewers . For me the Best 2 movies in this list is New York and Raajneeti . Holiday comes close on the 3rd position . This time Akshay is having the support of a successful franchise so it should open well and should generate superb numbers . OUATIMD, Holiday, Brothers, SIB and Airlift all these movies had the chance to beat RR but it could not . I have not included S26 and Baby because both of them could not have 135 CR . So this is the 6th chance for Akki to beat his own record . If it turns out to be an outright crap than it can be a failure . This year all the Sequels have been failures – KKHH 3, Jai Gangaajal, Tere Bin Laden : Dead Or Alive and Ghayal Once Again but H3 should break this trend .
Very difficult to predict about Housefull 3,since good proper comedy movie with good humour has not been there since past few years . Missing Priyadarsan and David Dhawan as well as Akshay , Paresh combo which was very successfull last decade. Housefull 3 trailer is strictly average with audience flavour very volatile now adays. Word of mouth will be an important factor if it entertain, it could be a big hit. If mixed ,its fate will be same as like Sajid Farhad’s last movie “Entertainment” or last year dud “Welcome back”.

Look at all the movies.
All movies are big nd very much loved by the audience.
It doesn’t boost opening day collections like a national holiday. Only summer holidays are a little Reason of such good collection in this period, not the end of IPL from anywhere .
Sarkar Raj – Didn’t Watched Yet.
New York – A fantastic movie. John abraham was the best part of it.
Raajneeti – Liked this Political thriller.
Ready – just one thing which was good in that is Paresh Rawal.
Rowdy Rathore – Superb Action., Fantastic Diologs, and finest Acting of Akshay Kumar and Sona Darling. and Great music album.
Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani – One of the finest romantic movie.
Holiday – Best Thriller till then. Akshay Kumar was Looked Fittest in an Soldier Role. Villain of the film was also fantastic. Songs were amazing.
Tanu Weds Manu Returns – One of THE Best entertainment of 2015.
Kangna Rocks…Madhwan was fantastic. Deepak was good in his one liner.
Jimmy Shergil is most underrated actor of Bollywood. He stole the show in a short role too.
Housefull3 – Just eagerly waiting to watch Akshay Kumar and Riteish Deshmukh after 2012. in “its entertainment” Just loved when they are together on on-screen.
Hoping that HOUSEFULL3 will cross 200.

I don’t why but I did not enjoy Yjhd…only the songs and the end scene but Ranbir sure did Justice with his acting. New York was one of John and Kats best movie for me. Twm returns aww..what can I say..I loved it…hvnt watched Ready n Sarkar raj yet.

when it comes to Comedy no one can beat him. and with riteish no one has to dare to stand against in comedy at the least.
Franchise factor and Akshay Kumar insure a 22 crore opening.
and his last successful movie Airlift also give a better chance at MULTIPLEX too.
