Paa Movie Review

Paa is one of the most anticipated films of the year due to several reasons

  • Paa is directed by R Balki who directed the critically acclaimed Cheeni Kum (2007).
  • Amitabh Bachchan as Auro, suffering from a rare premature aging disease called Progeria.
  • Abhishek playing father and Vidya Balan mother to Amitabh Bachchan in the film.

With expecatations of a classic, Paa co-produced by Amitabh Bachchan’s home-production AB Corp on a budget of 14.75 crores, also stars Paresh Rawal and has music composed by Ilaiyaraja.

About Progeria

Progeria is a very rare (one in 8 million) genetic condition, with the most visible symptom being aggressive aging. The disease is terminal and those suffering from Progeria on an average live for about 12 – 13 years.

Other visible symptoms of the disease include wrinkled skin, fragile bodies with a large head, abnormal growth and loss of hair. Currently there are close to 100 known patients worldwide suffering from the disease and 10 of them are from India.

Story

Paa isn’t about the illness but more about a boy (Auro – Amitabh Bachchan) and his family. Auro is a 13 year old suffering from Progeria. Mentally he is his age but physically looks like a 70 year old man. He lives with his mother Vidya (Vidya Balan), who is a doctor. His father Amol (Abhishek Bachchan) is a politician. The movie is about their relationship, struggles, emotions and a lot more.

The review will be short, revealing much would kill your Paa experience. Wait for the more detailed “Best Scenes in Paa” article after the weekend.

Paa Review

Paa is a well written and directed film, with adequate amount of emotions, fun and fabulous performances. The second half is brilliant with enough in it to keep you hooked. But the film suffers from a comparatively weaker first half. The pre interval portions deal with Abhishek’s political career and his rivalries, not exactly what you expect while walking in with expectations of a touching father-son tale.

But the second half more than makes up for it and its this half that makes Paa a tremendously satisfying watch. Watch out for the tear-inducing sequences involving Auro and also those light hearted moments all of which are written, executed and performed to perfection.

The music is average. The ‘Mere Paa’ track is good. The makeup by (Domini Till, Christien Tinsley) deserve special mention for turning Bachchan into a realistic looking Progeria patient.

Coming to the performances, Amitabh Bachchan delivers inarguably the best performance of the year. While I would still rate Black a notch higher, Paa is pure brilliance from a legend who is by far the best actor in the industry. Abhishek Bachchan is good, and so are Vidya Balan and Paresh Rawal. But the senior Bachchan’s character is such that it easily out shines the others.

Overall, Paa had potential to be a much better film than it turned out to be. Watch it for the powerful second half and an award worthy performance by the legendary Bachchan.

Rating: ★★★½☆

Box office

The business should be best at multiplexes and since the costs are low, Paa should recover its investment in a week or two. Universal acceptance like Taare Zameen Par is unlikely.

  • If the critics give Kurbaan 4.5 then I would rate Paa as 10. No comparison with kaminay & kurbaan . Paa is such a great movie that has a complete package of emotions, laughter & love. I have found one great thing in the movie that all the people were helping the Auro irrespective of the other movies.I just love Auro……. I believe Paa is a legendary movie…….. One of the best in this decade………must watch

A must watch for every member of the house.

  • This was my first visit here and moment I got to know that Kurbaan had been given 4.5 ratings by these reviewers, I am pretty convinced, that this will be my last visit too..

To just drive home how crappy Kurbaan direction was :

    i) Profiling is not done based on whether you have green-card or not..

ii) When Kareena had access to phone, she calls, errrrrr, a journalist.. 911, anyone ?

iii) University allows someone to have a kind of discussion they had in the class ? wake up guys.. and no one gets a doubt about it..

iv) Saif ali khan recruits Vivek just on the basis of class discussion ?

There are so many of those but these were glaring errors.. Frankly, it was a directorial disaster and no-one in the right frame of mind would give it more than 1.5 – 2 stars.. and yeah, no wonder it bombed at BO…

  • I completely agree with Yash pal about PAA and give it a 5 star rating. Every single actor is superb in it and Amitabh excels himself as Auro. It is very disheartening to see that such a fantastic movie is not given the praise it deserves. It would be nice if Indicine reevaluates their stand on Paa.

  • hi Paya, Kurbaan had nothing..so it had to be a disaster …u said kurbaan was gud but still flopped…this was just a mixture of Fanaa and New York…same old post 9/11 plot and crappy cinematography..it had to flop coz there was no punch line as such…

  • I just visited bollywoodhungama website and read Taran Adarsh’s review.. he gave the movie 4 stars and praised it..he said it’s a movie for every paa and every maa and it’s an outstanding movie which should get rewards at the box office as well as Bigb ( please read his review)

If a big reviewer like T. Adarsh would say all this about Paa.. then ppl out there.. please don’t believe in some negative comments and get yr tickets and watch the movie!

And yeah.. he gave Rocket Singh only 1.5/5.. he said it’s a boring movie.

  • people like taran adarsh can be bought for 10 lacs to write a favourable review.. since his portal is also into sponsoring movies and showcasing there is hardly a time where he gives an unfavorable comment no need to buy that…

if you feel misearable anytime .. im sure you might say hey..paa ah..

and is rocket singha boring movie>>>really..???? tch tch .. i was hoping it will shatter all records !!! after all it has the nations darling starring in it>>>…will it not be a hit??? OMG…oh paaaahh

  • Actually, paa is a sensational, rythmic movie, may be the screenplay is simple and similar to Taare Zameen Par background bringing a disease to the world. But, each and every scene in this film is hilariosly well suited music. Not Speaking Being a Tamilan, Obviously, Ilaiyaraja is always maestro for all of hearts of Tamilan, but this film’s backscore and Gudi-Gudi, humming everything deals with old reminiscence of ManiRatnam’s tamil movies. PCSreeram done good with his camera. Very Simple, No complications but Perfect. Balki done good work on his attention towards dialogue presentation, emotions, feelings. Screenplay seems to be like a duplication. Story is soo simple but good. He stuffs his message wherever needed and also whenever not needed especially in tackling his ideals on politics.
To my point of view. . .
Plus :- (1) Equal Importance to all characters, no chars is left unnecessarily; (2) Melancholic Backscore; (3) Auro’s rapid jokes
    Minus :- (1)BigB not maintain his same voice throughout the film;(2)Political Issue is somewhat boring and also not clear but good as similar to Nayak;

  • Paa, the movie, itself tells that it is better than any movie of the decade but NO… you all gave it just 3.5 stars!!! Do you tell me that movies like Kaminey, Kurbaan were better than this one??? I just cannot accept it… Paa was an emotional and a sweet movie where Big B could emote expressions really very well… and it deserves 5 stars…

  • Movie was cool. I agree but it was a centralized movie revolving around Auro. Abhishek, Vidya, Pareshetc, can be said as good but the movie doesnt has much for Abhishek. Again he is overshadowed by his father. If suppose some other child-actor would have been taken in the place of Amitabh, than I presume the movie could have told much. Afterall what his ‘Paa’ does?
Nothing except leaving behind his booming career and marrying Vidya at last.
    What a bullshit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I love Paa
    I cried and cried….
Usually I’ve only cried like this in a couple a movies …when they finish It hurts soo much that I just wanna sob and sob, thats how it felt with Paa, I wanted to just cry….cos it touched somewhere
Great acting – both AB’s were osum …and makeup was osum….

  • Rahdika: I loved it even more than u did.. saw it 3 times so far..it has a serious issue with a good message and in the same time it’s funny, entertaining and then at the end.. it touches yr heart.. great work by a great director.. this director’s work is unique.. I remember when I saw Cheeni Cum I said to myself: it’s a good movie.. but when I saw it for 2nd time.. loved the movie more and more.. the same way is his movie Paa..u see it more.. u just love it more.

  • I don’t agree that first half isn’t good, They are establishing character of polictician. That he is responsible, open minded and promising politician. I loved the movie and background music was exaCTLY AS PER THE MOODS AND EMOTIONS OF the characters. Special mention to arundhati naag, a wonderful performance.

  • I think Megha differentiated south Indian and north Indian formula and taste and born with one mother or two fathers or two mothers in a same country? Well, you clearly showed that you are such as ignorance in music. Flute, violin, guitar and other instruments are using by all musicians in this world. No one is composing with their mouth. You are really great that, if flute has been used that is south ndian music, copy from western music means north Indian music and through the stone to other guys means good music. First you learn what is music, simply not knowing anything, just showing everything is a absolute pig type attitude, shameful Indians. Indians bastards are the only donkeys in the world are exposing themselves as over-known donkeys.

  • Thanks a ton TT As part of media you guys have always mngaaed to touch a cord with us audience .GHSP was, is and will be a Forever Cherished Memory .No matter what they say, the PH and Channel have been really dishonest to us, Everyday when i look at the clock and realize there wouldn’t be a Geet today, no Maaneet Nok-Jhoks i feel cheated ..Sometimes its even hard to comprehend that GHSP is no there with us anymore .But every time i see an article on GHSP i feel it still here, even after the show ended media, viewers etc cannot stop talking about it Thats the Magic and Power of GHSP Will look forward to Part 2 .Thankyou for the wonderful article Kudos to Vijitha Rajan and TT

E qui, secondo me, di atmosfera(come dice galilee) e grafica “tetra” ce n’ abbastanza..secondo me pi che soddisfacente
