On the cricket field, MS Dhoni begins cautiously and then gets into attacking mode, but at the box office, the popularity of the star-cricketer has helped his biopic – ‘MS Dhoni: The Untold Story’ – to the second spot, ahead of films featuring superstars like Shah Rukh Khan (FAN), Akshay Kumar (Housefull 3, Rustom, Airlift) and Hrithik Roshan (Mohenjo Daro).
The Neeraj Pandey film has not only opened well at the box office on Friday, but sustained well on Saturday too. The two-day collections of the film stands at Rs 41.9 crore.
In fact, keeping a film of a certain megastar aside, ’MS Dhoni: The Untold Story’ is the only other film to cross the 35 crore in its first two days and also the only film to collect more than 20 crore on each of its first two days!
While ‘Sultan’ benefitted from two partial holidays for Eid, FAN too had the advantage of a half-holiday for Ram Navami on its opening day. ’MS Dhoni: The Untold Story’ did not have a single holiday, yet has managed to beat some of the bigger films this year.
It raises an important question – do stars really need favourable / holiday weekends, even at the cost of a major box office clash? Can Raees or Kaabil achieve the kind of numbers that Dhoni has, if they clash? If a film, featuring a big star, is made to appeal to a wider section of the audience and has good content – it can easily average 20 – 25 crore over a normal non-holiday weekend.

Answer is yes it is difficult but not for srk you forgotten dilwale(in bad phase of srk) doing 21.54cr with clash on non hollyday inspite of eros screen occupied strategy with bajarangi bhaaijan and protest factor
@xzone so you think salman needs eid to beat your gatarchap idol. Let me remind you a funny incident which happened in 2011. in that year srk has two releases on festivals. Ra one on diwali and don2 on christmas. But none of these two films were able to beat salman’s non holiday release ready. Now give me a single example when a salman film released on eid or christmas or diwali in the last 5 years has grossed lower than a post ipl release. You will not find a single one. Srk has achieved this many times. His diwali release jthj grossed lower than non holiday barfi despite of more screens and ticket prices. His latest christmas release dilwale failed to cross non holiday release twmr despite of having more screens , ticket prices and holiday factor.And i have already said about ra one and don2. First you have to be a deserving one to release your films on festivals. If your festival releases do lower business than non holiday releases then you are wasting those festivals and noone will let you release your films on festivals.
Just like Megastar Aamir khan rules in bollywood industry, MS dhoni is currently ruling cricket industry. No one can come close to these 2 megastars. Overrated stars like lallu and kohli are nothing in front of these 2 legends.
Without starring in the film, not even making a cameo or doing item song or not even being an actor, Dhoni is ruling box office with his name only with small struggling fanless actor like sushant singh rajput. More power to the cricket legend. No doubt, dhoni is much bigger star than Hakla khan. Hakla’s billu was promoted as his own film, he had maximum screen time and 3 songs, still the life time of billu was thrashed by MS Dhoni biopic within the afternoon shows. Q. Shahrukh Gave up Eid 2016 for Salman. His film The Ring does not have a release date still and Salman has already occupied EID and Christmas. Is it fair because once again his film does not have a proper release date?
A. There is no ‘giving up’ business in the industry. Salman pretty much snatched it away because of his track record during Eid and current stardom. The bigger star (present standing) will take the bigger dates. In the current scenario, major stars need to be in a position to scare away the opposition. Else it’s very difficult to get a solo release during Eid, Diwali, Christmas or even the other major weekends.
That’s says all, who got scared and ran away.
