On the cricket field, MS Dhoni begins cautiously and then gets into attacking mode, but at the box office, the popularity of the star-cricketer has helped his biopic – ‘MS Dhoni: The Untold Story’ – to the second spot, ahead of films featuring superstars like Shah Rukh Khan (FAN), Akshay Kumar (Housefull 3, Rustom, Airlift) and Hrithik Roshan (Mohenjo Daro).
The Neeraj Pandey film has not only opened well at the box office on Friday, but sustained well on Saturday too. The two-day collections of the film stands at Rs 41.9 crore.
In fact, keeping a film of a certain megastar aside, ’MS Dhoni: The Untold Story’ is the only other film to cross the 35 crore in its first two days and also the only film to collect more than 20 crore on each of its first two days!
While ‘Sultan’ benefitted from two partial holidays for Eid, FAN too had the advantage of a half-holiday for Ram Navami on its opening day. ’MS Dhoni: The Untold Story’ did not have a single holiday, yet has managed to beat some of the bigger films this year.
It raises an important question – do stars really need favourable / holiday weekends, even at the cost of a major box office clash? Can Raees or Kaabil achieve the kind of numbers that Dhoni has, if they clash? If a film, featuring a big star, is made to appeal to a wider section of the audience and has good content – it can easily average 20 – 25 crore over a normal non-holiday weekend.

MS Dhoni was in a different league altogether and it’s unfair to compare it with movies starting SRK, Akki etc.
There was an strange craze for this movie and that was totally different as that of conventional Bollywood movies.
A friend from Tamilnadu posts on Facebook with hash tag #FDFS and mind you that she is extremely critical of Bollywood movies.
Same was the craze among the people belonging to Karnataka, western and central India.
So the way you are daily beating around the bushes and comparing it with other biggies of 2016 is really farcical.

Meanwhile, there are rumours that Raees is going to be postponed due to recent controversy related to Pakistani artists.
Though I never wanted Raees to clash with Kaabil on a weekend as tiny as Republic day, but the reason due to which it is shifting is really alarming.
As a producer, Excel will never want to lose their money and thus they will take steps what deemed to be necessary but government should bring some safeguards for such producers and film artists, else tomorrow any Tom-Dick-Harry will rise up and threaten the artists and produces to postpone their movies or face a boycott.
This could be sigh of relief for most of the fanbases (particularly ‘SRK haters’), but they should be well aware that these extremists can target anyone. Today it’s SRK tomorrow it will be some other superstar.
