On the cricket field, MS Dhoni begins cautiously and then gets into attacking mode, but at the box office, the popularity of the star-cricketer has helped his biopic – ‘MS Dhoni: The Untold Story’ – to the second spot, ahead of films featuring superstars like Shah Rukh Khan (FAN), Akshay Kumar (Housefull 3, Rustom, Airlift) and Hrithik Roshan (Mohenjo Daro).
The Neeraj Pandey film has not only opened well at the box office on Friday, but sustained well on Saturday too. The two-day collections of the film stands at Rs 41.9 crore.
In fact, keeping a film of a certain megastar aside, ’MS Dhoni: The Untold Story’ is the only other film to cross the 35 crore in its first two days and also the only film to collect more than 20 crore on each of its first two days!
While ‘Sultan’ benefitted from two partial holidays for Eid, FAN too had the advantage of a half-holiday for Ram Navami on its opening day. ’MS Dhoni: The Untold Story’ did not have a single holiday, yet has managed to beat some of the bigger films this year.
It raises an important question – do stars really need favourable / holiday weekends, even at the cost of a major box office clash? Can Raees or Kaabil achieve the kind of numbers that Dhoni has, if they clash? If a film, featuring a big star, is made to appeal to a wider section of the audience and has good content – it can easily average 20 – 25 crore over a normal non-holiday weekend.

In that period srk failed too cross a post ipl film, what a shame. Give me a single example when a salman film released on christmas or diwali or eid has done lower business than a post ipl release. Before 2010 there are many more films of srk released on diwali which has done lower business than non festive releases. That list will never end. As of I know indicine keeps official figure. Give me the link which shows oso was an all time grosser. Indicine has mentioned many times that srk has only one all time grosser. The advantages you are mentioning for bb and sultan even happy new year , ra one , don2 has those advantages. What happened. Ra one with a five day long diwali holiday weekend and two open weeks just like sultan failed to cross ready a post ipl release. Now look at the difference between sultan’s collection and post ipl release housefull3’s collections. A diwali release or a christmas release can never gross lower than a post ipl release unless the star is as worthless as srk. Name any christmas release in the last few years apart from dilwale and don2 which has grossed lower than a post ipl release. Chennai express having 6 open days is an excuse. sultan has crossed the lifetime collections and footfalls of chennai express in a week itselsf. So even if ce has got 100 open weeks it would have hardly matterd. Let’s commpare between kick and ce. Now ce has got 6 open days and kick’s first 6 days are also solo. Kick’s official figures for the first six days was around 150 crore while for ce it was only 137 crore and that too adding its preview collection. Now kick did not have any paid previews. So on real value ce was 22 crore less than kick in the first 6 days. The first 6 days collections of bb was around 168 croere and sultan was around 195 crore. So what happened from 7th day onwards is unimportant. Though i don’t follow official figures. And why this ticket price and screen logic is used against only salman. Why Happy new year failed to cross kick, why raone failed to cross ready despite of having higher screens and ticket prices. Srk has dominated for 22 years but still his overall career blockbusters, all time blockbuster, highest grosser of the year,2crplus 3crplus footfall films , total earning of all films, per film average are lesser than salman. In terms of hits he is equal to salman. In terms of all time highest grossers he and salman is equal but salman has 11 films in his total career which have entered the top 3 grossers of all time at the time of its release while srk has only 7. Now I am talking about record breaking initials. For this I have to follow boi.com because they are the only site which have datas of opening day and opening weekend of films released in 90’s and early 2000’s. Salman and srk both have broken opening day record only 6 times in their whole career. and the weekend records for both of them is 8. Though in numbers they are equal but if we consider solo starers salman has broken first day and weekend record more times.
