Most Disappointing Bollywood Movies of 2014

Jai Ho: Salman Khan did not have any release in 2013 which was a first for him. So when he was returning after more than a year with a film that was labelled as a social drama, expectations were certainly running high. Unfortunately, Jai Ho turned out to be a damp squib filled with clichéd situations, unconvincing storyline, awful casting filled with B grade actors and above all unnecessary Salman Khan fight scenes. Sohail Khan wanted to make a social drama without alienating Salman’s fan base. He ended up pleasing nobody with Jai Ho.

Gulaab Gang: Sampath Rai’s story of forming the Gulaab Gang and invoking their own justice on men who harm women was an interesting premise for a film. Casting former heavyweights like Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla made the film’s prospects seem even better before release. Sadly, in his attempt to turn the film more commercial, director Shoumik Sen added unusually Salmanesque action sequences to his film. A much more realistic subtle approach would have done the film a lot of wonders. No wonder, Gulaab Gang sank without a trace.

Revolver Rani: Kangna Ranaut stole our hearts with her performance in Queen. The film made us feel that it was the emergence of a bold and independent new actress in Indian cinema who likes to do things her way. That is why we were intrigued by Revolver Rani before release. Unfortunately, the film turned out to be too eccentric and loose-ended for anybody’s liking. Its failure notwithstanding, we are willing to give Kangna the benefit of the doubt.

The Xpose: Truth be said, we were not expecting The Xpose to be a good film since the moment the trailers were released. Heck, we expected a bad film. But The Xpose turned out to be even worse than we imagined with some of the worst acting we have seen in Hindi cinema recently, coupled with cringe-worthy and atrociously bad dialogues. Even Himesh Reshammiya’s music couldn’t save his acting venture. Himesh should do himself and us a favour and just quit acting as soon as possible. However, the makers are set to release a sequel later this year.

Fugly: Akshay Kumar showed promise as a producer when he produced the phenomenal OMG Oh My God and that alone made us feel that Fugly will be worth watching. However, it turned out to be almost unwatchable with hackneyed plot-lines and clichéd characters like the one which Jimmy Shergill portrayed. Fugly was trying to be a Rang De Basanti for this decade but unfortunately, it had neither the balls nor the brains to execute the social uplifting aspect with the youthful camaraderie aspect. Vijender Singh would do the country proud by focusing on his boxing career for now.

Worst Bollywood Movies of 2014

Humshakals: Sajid Khan delivered the first flop of his career with Himmatwala where he abandoned his favourite genre of comedy for masala. So when he returned to comedy, we expected Sajid Khan to be back to his A game. That of course turned out to be a false dawn as Humshakals lowered the mark for the worst film of the year and took the crown from Fugly. The cheesy acting, the ridiculous story and the miscast Saif Ali Khan all played a part in ruining Humshakals and gave Sajid Khan his second flop in a row.

Bobby Jasoos: Vidya Balan had been going through a dull phase before Bobby Jasoos came to town. She was allowed her share of Ghanchakkars and Shaadi Ke Side Effects after giving us films like Ishqiya, Paa, Kahaani year after year. So we expected Bobby Jasoos to bring Vidya back into the game as the film’s focal point was Vidya and everything revolved around her character. She was almost faultless as an actress but the film was truly disappointing with very few thrills and the suspense not being up to the mark. We expect Vidya to choose better scripts now, as per her usual norm.

Entertainment: One of the many reasons Rohit Shetty has emerged amongst the top directors in the last decade, has been the scripts written by Sajid-Farhad. They’ve written some of the funniest films like the Golmaal series and Chennai Express. So when news came of them making the leap into direction, naturally we expected them to make a fun family film. But it wasn’t to be. Entertainment turned out to be a mess of a film which seemed like it was spoofing other comedy films. Entertainment can be best enjoyed at home on the TV, it just wasn’t a good enough big screen experience. Sajid-Farhad have to do better with their next film, which is Housefull 3.

Raja Natwarlal: Emraan Hashmi seems to have forgotten his core audience in search of respect amongst the multiplex audience. It was felt as if Raja Natwarlal would be a return to familiar rustic territory for Emraan. It had a very entertaining idea about creating a fake IPL team and selling it but the execution left a lot to be desired. It just didn’t come together in the end. Raja Natwarlal felt like a disjointed film which had been edited together.

Daawat-e-Ishq: Parineeti Chopra has been one of our favourite actresses ever since her debut in Ladies Vs Rick Bahl, because of her jolly attitude and fun nature. It doesn’t hurt that she is a good actress. Director Habib Faisal has also written and directed films like Do Dooni Chaar and Ishaqzaade. That had us intrigued about this film which promised to capture the delicacies of Hyderabad and Lucknow. At the end, it was neither a food film nor a properly boiled (get it) love story. It ended up being a film about dowry. You can’t promise the audience one thing and give them something else. Daawat-e-Ishq met its fate at the box office.

Bang Bang: Bang Bang was being made since ages. It was the official remake of Hollywood hit Knight and Day and featured the beautiful pairing of Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif. It was shot in beautiful locales around the world. Unfortunately, with hindsight we can say that Bang Bang is the most beautiful looking bad film. It felt as if director Sidharth Anand brought together action scenes and conceived them just to play to the gallery. Now, those actions were stylishly shot and were good to look at but without a believable script to back it all up, Bang Bang fell flat after its opening weekend. The fact that it was still the highest grossing non-festive release of 2014, shows the potential the film had, if only it had a better script and director!

Kill Dil: Ranveer Singh has been the darling of the media recently because of his hit films and his hit pairing with Deepika Padukone. So when he decided to do Shaadi Ali’s Kill Dil we were looking forward to the final product. Expectations weren’t high but we expected a watchable film. It wasn’t to be. Kill Dil was plain and simple bad cinema with nothing working for it. Director Shaad Ali wasted some good songs created by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. The box office outcome of Kill Dil has lessons for its lead actor – Ranveer needs to do less buddy-action films, Parineeti Chopra needs to reinvent herself and Govinda needs to be given better scripts to work with.

Happy Ending: Saif Ali Khan is a good respected actor with a decent body of work behind him. However, he has been going through a rough patch recently which is partly due to his bad script selection – Bullet Raja, Humshakals and Happy Ending. He was miscast in all those films except for Happy Ending. Saddest thing about Happy Ending was that Saif didn’t do justice to a film which is home territory for him: the romantic comedy genre. He seemed old in it. The film itself tried to be different from other romantic comedies but ended up being the same type of romantic comedy it was trying to make fun of. One of the biggest disasters of 2014.

Action Jackson: Being part of disasters seems to have become a speciality for Ajay Devgn, what with him doing films like RGV Ki Aag, Cash, Tezz, Rascals and now Action Jackson being added to that list. Prabhu Deva makes some of the most regressive and repulsive films in Bollywood and Action Jackson was a sad continuation of that trajectory. It was the worst film made this year by far. Everything from the casting to dialogues to storyline to action scenes created record lows. For arguably the best actor-superstar in the industry, Ajay Devgn can do justice to both serious intense roles and as well as light-hearted comic roles. We hope he picks better films!

  • Most Disappointing films for Me:

    1. Bang Bang(thought it would be a good action movie, but despite great pairing,Hro’s powerful performance, beautiful locations and cool locations, it was a let down by Poor script and weak director)

    2. Kick(After a powerful trailer and powerful posters, I was expecting it to be atleast better than regular Salmanfilm. But It Was no different)

    3. Holiday: Ghajini Director! A fairly good trailer. I was expecting it to be a good thriller! But sadly, it was a typical masala with a “Message” in extra.

    4. Ek villian: A great Album! Great pairing of Sid and Shraddha. It was an just okay type movie for me!

    5. Ungli: A dharma film! Talented actors like Kangana,Emmi,Randeep,Sanju. But where was the quality?

As for Action Jackson,Entertainment,Jai Ho,HNY, they were looking bad right from their B-grade trailers and they became bad too. So no disappointment.

  • @Tiger

It was “disappointing” because of expectations. PK is easily one of the best films of the year, but I personally expected much more from it. The emotional moments were very few this time around compared to 3 idiots or Munna Bhai.

I have actually not seen a host of films this year. Seen many with no expectations, but I felt Pk couldn’t carry the baggage of expectations that well.

  • I have voted for Jai Ho, AJ, Happy Ending, Fugly and Kill/Dill . I thought Jai Ho would be different from typical Salman movies . But i was disappointed with Jai Ho more than Kick . Sohail Khan made a mockery of a social issue . Salman is playing a common man in the movie yet he can beat 100 people at the same time . Height of Stupidity !!! AJ was a crap movie . I would say it was better than R… Rajkumar for me . An actor like Ajay should not waste his talent by working in such kind of movies . I hope he bounces back with Shivaay . Happy Ending was not a crap but it was a formula based movie . Saif Ali Khan should stop doing Rom Coms . He was very good in Salaam Namaste, Hum Tum and Cocktail . But now he is getting old and for how long will public accept the same rom com genre . It had nothing new to offer . I thought Fugly would have a different concept . Its plot was extremely confusing to say the least . Only Jimmy Shergill’s acting was nice . Kill/Dill was a pretty average movie but it was much better than JBJ . Parineeti was wasted in the movie . Ranveer and Govinda were really good . The second half was bad, it had too many unnecessary songs and the ending of the movie was pathetic and abrupt . @ Indicine I think you also should have nominated HNY and Kick . Just a thought .

  • I am not sure whether Indicine is talking about worst films of 2014 or disappointing films. Because worst films are very easy to point out, but disappointing films are different for everyone.

  • @Nipun, don’t say ghajini director, he established before ghajini.
    For me
    1. Hny
    2. Jai ho
    3.entertainment
    4. Bang bang
    5. AJ.

  • Happy Newyear could have been a better movie if it had a better script.Quality wise u can call it as a disappointment but collection wise its not.

  • @Arjun Kapoor Fan: Did’nt liked Jai Ho and BangBang in 2nd watch, both were decent one time watch but you don’t expect such films from superstars like HR and salman…U were right regarding BB.Probably I flowed in my infatuation with HR.BB was disappointing bcoz the scale on which it was made was huge, teaser was fantastic, hopes were high..HR performed well but Sid Anand’s direction let it down.Same like you,you also liked Humshakals and Kill Dil very much but later changed your opinion.

@Suniel:: I know I had given 4 stars to it and I even fought with indicine when they gave it 2.5 but they were right. When I watched it 2nd time I got to know it was’nt a well made film.

  • actually 5 picks not done you listed all craps
I voted worst like AJ ,happy ending ,humshakals kill dil & bobby jasoos .but I need more for raja natwarlal and gulab gang

  • Pk is the most dissappointing movie for me.the second non akshay hindi filim i saw in bigscreen after chennai express.aamir do another crap after dhoom3,still some blind fans tells pk is classic.
Pk-after all time classic 3 idiots hirani-aamir filim.
Verdict-below average filim with some good comedy.
I-after all time blockbluster anniyan shankar-vikram teamed.
Verdict-average filim with vikrams best perfomance.
Waiting for bahubali directed by no1 indian director rajamoul.

  • Worst Films of 2014(considering big films and ignoring smaller ones like Mumbai 125 Km.)

    1. Action Jackson: everything about the films was bad. Be it the direction, editing,BGM,songs,Choreography, performances etc.0.5/5

    2. Entertainment: “Sonakshi Sina Tan ke” “Rajnikand” and so on! Is this the so called “Entertainment”? 1/5

    3. Zid: terrible! Twists are even cringe-inducing. 1/5

    4. Yaariyan: Terrible climax. Poor performances. 1.5/5

    5. Hate Story 2: I watched it to see the intimate scenes. But I wasted my time and got a torture. 1.5/5

    6. Creature 3D: What was it ? Despite the sincere acting by Bips,Movie sucked! 1.5/5

    7. Dawat-E-Ishq:boring,predictable! 1.5/5

    8. Gunday: an outdated movie. 2/5

    9. Happy New Year:
other than a few good performances, what was good? Absolutely Nothing! 2/5

    10. Happy Ending: Too Boring! 2/5

  • Great directors in india
1-rajamouli(give 2 blockblusters with non superstar actors and direct ever time classic mgdheera.)
2-sankar(filims like robot and anniyan takes tamil filims to another level)
3-rajkumar hirani(direct 3 idiots and munnabhai series.strong social messages gave through his filims)

  • @ Indicine: Where is HNY…it deserves to be in this list.

Bang Bang was not great, but was better than HNY….Bang Bang collections trending was better than HNY and both did almost same amount of business..Bang Bang with clash 181 crores. HNY with no clash 204 crore.

You yourself predicted 250 + crores for HNY, but it ended up at 204 crores..is that not called disappointing?

  • For me, it was Jai Ho. Though there were a lots of negativities associated with this movie, but now a days , all these things are irrelevant for a Salman Khan release as his on-screen presence is more than enough to make the audiences to rush to the theatres. Though it collected more than 100cr, but I completely missed the typical “Salman touch” in Jai Ho. When heard that Jai Ho has some social message with it and Salman is changing his track, I was pretty happy and excited. But Sohail messed up everything. So Jai Ho is the biggest disappointment of 2014(for me).
@Ajay Rocks : How come HNY should be included in the list? If we just cut the length , HNY was a perfect entertainer. The entry scene of characters, the perfect comic timing of Abhishek, strategies for dance championship, it had many moments which one would completely enjoy. But since day one I had been telling and I’ll tell the same now – it’s length completely ruined it. Had it been restricted within 2.5 hrs, HNY would have been a good (if not excellent) movie, but because of its length, it turned into an above average movie, but worst movie?? Definitely not!!!

  • Actually bang bang didn’t disappointed me because while watching trailor there were shown only action sense. So I thought that there is something wrong in film that why makers release trailor with out dialogue. If makers released trailor with dialogue then no one had watch this crap movies. Yeh it is just average at boxoffice collecting 140 cr(they show fake collection of 180 cr like K3 , which they fake d of 247cr, in actual it collected 176cr). If trailor released with dialogue it should collect 50-60 cr with final verdict flop/disaster.

  • Wow! No “Happy New Year”?

45 crore opening still it could do just over 200 crore according to producers in a festival like Diwali, which is enough to show its under performance apart from audience’s general response. These reasons should have been enough for it to make to this list, @Indicine.

  • Please note that there is a difference between “Worst movie” and “Disappointing movie” . And my above comment never implies that Jai Ho was the worst movie. Rather I would say it was a disappointment for me.
At the same time, my reply to @Ajay Rocks is regarding the worst movie for 2014, because throughout in his comment , he emphasized on the word “Worst” . But according to me, HNY is definitely not the worst movie of 2014. For many people, it may be a “Disappointment” (Not for me though) , but its not the worst movie of 2014 for sure.

  • I think this list by indicine is about most disappointing films at the bo and not in terms of quality or wom.so all plz stop asking indicine y this y not that etc etc

  • @nipun also include 2states in ur list of most disappointing /worst mvz.if u cn list gd films like hny, kick, villain, gunday in ur list then 2states doesn’t deserve ur ignorance
