Dharma production sets sights on Bhopal for blockbuster shoot

BHOPAL: Come December, one of Bollywood’s most expensive films to date, would be shot in Bhopal.

Director Karan Malhotra was in the city on Sunday scouting for locations and later confirmed the shooting of his next film Shuddhi starring Kareena Kapoor and Hrithik Roshan here. Film is produced by Karan Johar’s Dharma productions.

“Bhopal is a scenic city a perfect mix of old heritage structures and new developments alongside. If things go as planned, Bhopal is the chosen one for Shuddhi,” Karan Malhotra told TOI. Not revealing the budget of the film, Malhotra said, “Shuddhi is a big budget film and ultimately budget depends on the production house and availability of resources. Bhopal can expect the highest quality of production to date,” he added.

According to industry estimates, Shuddhi is slated to have a budget in excess of Rs 115 to 150 crore easily superseding costliest Bollywood films Blue and RA One which were pegged at Rs 100 crore.

On Sunday, Malhotra went around the city on a recce. He visited the royal quadrant, include the 18th century Sadar Manzil and Shuakat Mahal palaces — the location for a number of shoots including Prakash Jha’s last film Satyagraha (2013) and Merchant Ivory production In Custody (1994). He also went around the city exploring location in New Market and BHEL area.

“Industry’s costliest film being shot in Bhopal is a testament to the city’s growing reputation as a base for film production. Shoot for Shuddhi is likely to begin in mid-December and likely to last for about 25 days,” said local film production consultant Zulfiqar Ali. Shooting schedule in Bhopal would cover one-third of the film.

Many like Zulfiqar are not shy in giving credit to filmmaker Prakash Jha for Bollywood increasingly preferring Bhopal. Jha shot his last four films in the city. Jha is to film his next unnamed film, possibly a comedy, from January 2014. Satyagraha (2013), which was completely filmed in Bhopal had a budget of Rs 50 crore.

While Shuddhi would be Malhotra’s second film as director after Agneepath, a remake of the 1990 film of the same name, Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor would be seen together on the big screen after a decade. Since their last film Yaadein (2001) both have been married and none more so famously than Kareena Kapoor, who married Saif Ali Khan, a descendent of the erstwhile rulers of Bhopal.
