Kambakht Ishq Movie Review

Well, nothing has changed. Kambakht Ishq directed by Sabbir Khan is the same old, typical Akshay Kumar comedy flick. Expensive sets, 4 odd songs filled with babes from the west, a couple of great action sequences performed by the star himself, a super sexy co-star, funny one-liners and a story that completely lacks sense or logic.

So what’s the story? In short, a guy and a girl hate each other to the core but end up falling in love. Yes, that’s about it.

For those keen on the detailed storyline.. Viraj Shergill (Akshay Kumar) is one of the most sought-after Stuntmen in Hollywood. He believes woman are good for nothing, except sex. Simrita (Kareena Kapoor), an arrogant young lady doesn’t believe in love. The two meet at Viraj’s brother Lucky’s (Aftab Shivdasani) and Simrita’s best friend Kamini’s (Amrita Arora) wedding. Both oppose and the battle of sexes begins! But like most Bollywood movies, the two are destined to fall in love.. the weird manner in which they do and realize their mistake, forms the rest of the tale.

Review in short.. Sadly, the best part of Kambakth Ishq is its first 15 mins. Its starts off brilliantly, but falls flat after the church scene. Infact, the second half is so poor, I would rather prefer watching a Tashan instead! Or maybe even Chandni Chowk To China.. atleast the songs were better!

Have patience for a detailed review? Read on.. Kambakth Ishq has to be one of the most desperate attempts to make people laugh, atleast in recent memory. And out of all the so-called funny scenes, probably two are worth a laugh.

In one of the most stupid plots ever witnessed in an Akshay Kumar film, we have the leading lady (Kareena), a doctor, performing her first surgery on her male lead (Akshay), who is injured while performing a stunt. While operating she happens to leave her watch inside his stomach. The watch keeps playing “Om Mangalam” every hour, so loudly that it could put the best of audio speakers to shame. The doctor, worried of being sued, tries every trick in the book to get the watch out and even sleeps with him (or atleast she thinks so). Now, Akshay falls in love, so what does he do? He slips her into a bikini, takes her underwater and proposes.. What does Kareena do? Injects him out of his consciousness and performs a surgery to take the watch out. HECK! Couldn’t she do that much earlier? Okay its a mindless entertainer, but neither is it entertaining or funny!

By the time, the only decent song in the film ‘Kyun’ begins, the restlessness amongst the audience is clear. Some get up to leave, clearly disappointed.

The dialogues are cheap, music (Anu Malik) is pathetic, lyrics are horrible and the performances are no better. Akshay Kumar in yet another slapstick comic role has a bad outing yet again, he tries hard but rising above the script, he doesn’t! Kareena Kapoor in her bitchiest role ever, displays ample amount of skin but disappoints with her performance. Aftab Shivdasani is wasted and so is Kiron Kher. Javed Jaffrey has just about 3 scenes and 10 minutes of screen time. Amrita Arora has nothing to do, she looks great in those bikini’s though.

Coming to the Hollywood stars, the only actor who manages to impress is Sylvester Stallone, being a huge fan of the actor I enjoyed his short guest appearance. Denise Richards looked bad. Brendon Routh was wasted.

Overall, Kambakht Ishq is a lot of money wasted. It neither entertains nor does it have enough ‘laughs’ in store for the viewers. Skip this, watch New York instead!

At the box-office, the movie has released on more than 2000 screens. The first weekend should be huge. But for a big budget film like this, its first Monday will be the key.

Rating: ★½☆☆☆ 1 and a half stars

  • Kambakkht ishq has collect 24.5 crs in this weekend in india and overseas it collect 11 crs….It is definetly going to be hit!!

  • Okay, I just have to say something.
Some of you are like “ohhh you’re not akshay’s fan so thats why you’re saying negative things about the movie”.
First of all, you never have to be a fan to watch someone’s movie, you just watch it. JUST BECAUSE someone says something negative about this movie doesn’t mean they’re not xyz’s fan.
Secondly, you don’t watch a movie just for one certain person, you watch it because its promos or whatever interests you.
And LAST, why are some people bringing up srk?! he has nothing to do with the damn movie, so mind your own business. & when u say SRK isnt on that level yet, GO DO UR BOLLYWOOD HOMEWORK. & go see where srk has reached, internationally.
its NOT a “Akshay Vs. Srk” competition we’re talking about, its the movie. & if its a flop, its a flop. if you think its a hit, then okay good for you.
STOP TRYING TO ENFORCE UR OPINION ON EVERYONE ELSE.

    thank you. >.<

  • Very accurate and perceptive review of this totally useless and trashy film. I took your advice, and saw New York. It was good.

  • This movie was a total waste of time. I mean what do these directors and producers think that they will just put any shit on the screen and we the audience should enjoy the crap. I hadn’t been to the movie theatre in a long time and bollywood would on strike for a long time so I thought why not start with this movie since it was being talked about so much. I thought the most disgusting part in the movie was in the airport when they do a cavity search on akshay kumar. I mean there is a way to do comedy but NOT LIKE THIS!!!! What a bunch of crap. Not to mention so much of skin. In real life no doctor goes for a stunt man he’s a stunt man and lives in an ocean side penthouse or apartment or whatever, that to in LA are they out of their minds. This riduclous movie didn’t leave anything to the imagination.

Throughout the movie the only diologues I can remember were all swearing and I think must have heard bitch about a thousand times. If this the crap that is coming out I would rather not go to watch movies. but its good I went in the afternoon, in the evening the charge maximum price for it which it is not worth it.

HI FATHIYA LONG TIME WHAT YOU BEEN UP TO?

  • Nice movie.. As an akki fan, i’m a lil bit dissapointed with the story line,, the first half was quite good, beginning of the second half was also nice,, but then it became boring.. and the end was quite cliche.. nothing exciting happened..
But yes, it was a funny movie, quite entertaining;)..

Summing up the perfomances, I think Akshay was really good, as always!, His comic timing is awesome, and I don’t know why people have problem with his comedy.. He tried something else in the movie 8 x 10, but no one liked it there either.. so whats the problem with his comedy?!.. People have problem with his same comedy AND his different perfomances.. does that mean that people are jealous of his success?!..

    Well, I dunno!

Kareena was awesome, loved her dresses!
Amrita and Aftab was very gud =).. Sweet couple=)

Javed, Kiron Kher and Boman Irani was just wasted..

On the whole: Nice movie, watch it if you are an akki fan.. but don’t expect too much from it.. ;)

  • Hi Kiran.. nice to hear from you..I was wondering..asking myself.. why Kiran disappeard?!

I am in London now.. and yesterday I was in Trocadero in Picadillly, saw the poster of KI but after reading the review didnt got to watch it.

I wl wait for Kamineh to be released.. I think it’s a good movie.. hope so

  • the review is absolutely nonsense.me and my gang of freinds went for this movie in cochin and for 3 days we diddn’t got a seat.this is a great movie when i undrestood only after i watched it.you indicine team and other moron critics please dont screw yourself by depromoting akshay kumar.k i is the blockbuster of 2009 and it has already broke ghajini’s record by grossing 70 crores in 1 week as by NDTV poll.doesn’t that make sense you srk pimps.akshay is here to stay for another 25 years better than srk or the asshole hrithik.akshay is the only actor for last 20 years had 4 or 6 movies a year and made majority of them a superhit, undrstand.K I will surely brek any record in next 3o days .and never criticize any actor for a bad script or bad direction.tell srk to make a hit with a newcomer crack director ,he will stand and shit,by getting good banners ,good director ,good script, good music its easy for any actor to make a hit.but akshay has been just opposite thats the difference.

  • K I is such a good movie and people are so jealous of akshay kumar making a string of hits.i cant uderstand.those reviews by CLAINE and JULIUS VAZ are so cheap and nonsense.you guys beware!!!you will only get akshay movies in nere future for another 20 years, bloody morons.why we argue so much when the movie has already became a blockbuster.

    carlton west

you have both said it spot on ! the film is not worth even thinking about. the only bit i liked about the film is the song .”kyun phoolon ke…”

that is a tremendously romantic and beautiful song, well composed by annu malik. probably one of the best romantic songs i have heard recently. the song is a very true refelection of the feelings i have had inside myself on many occasions, especially when it comes to beautiful women. it took the feelings right out if my heart.
and its a song i admire very much.
thats about the only thing i liked about the film.
otherwise the film is so bad, it should have gone straight to dvd !!

now those of you who are saying the film has broken box office records. well, it hasn’t.
its only the 6th biggest grosser in terms of its first week business. hardly anything worth talking about. besides, it hasn’t even recovered its investment of 60 crores yet.
furthermore, the film has started its second week with a drop in business of about 75% !!! that is a huge drop. and at the rate it is going , it wont even manage 45 crore business by the end of its second week. which could mean disaster for the film, as it is yet to recover the 60 crore investment. so, how on earth the film will become a hit, is beyond me. let alone breaking all box office records.

if akshay starts improving from now, his films releasing next year should be much better and he should be back in form, the way he was 3 years ago. and the public will forget and forgive and embrace him with open arms. otherwise he is a gonner, and revert back to being a b-grade star.

hope his ‘blue’ is much better than his last 3 flicks. at least for the paying audience’s sake. or is he just going to sit through the film singing:

” i have a blue house with a blue window, blue is the colour of all that i wear, blue is the streets and all the trees are blue, i have a girlfriend and she is so blue…………

……….iam blue, abadee abaday, abadee abaday, abadee abaday…….”!!!

    get it ?

  • I don’t understand what this debate is about srk and akshay kumar, I really like akshay kumar movies. loved singh is king, bhool bhulaiya, namaste london, all his movies with katrina kaif, I really like him as an actor. I could be wrong I think most people didnt like the movie because of the story line which I thought was really stupid, it wasn’t a bad movie because akshay kumar but bad because of its direction and story line. You all have to understand that a movie is a complete team work, and you can’t pin all the bad stuff on just one actor.

I think both srk and akshay kumar a great equally in their own ways, so I don’t understand why everyone here is dissing one another. To me when I watch a movie it has to be meaningful. I don’t want to touch upon a sensitive issue on the move kambakht ishq, but there are a few messages and things especially towards the end of the move that one can only understand if you live outside of india like in america and canada, such as myself.

To I think it was praveen who lives in cochin, you’re from India I’m not surprised that you and your friends liked the movie thats very typical of Indian guys. Sitting in India you guys don’t have a clue what real life is all about in these countries. You all think that when Indian guys come from India you think some shapely blonde white girls will be falling all over you and all and that life is what they’re trying to show you all in the movie, which is bullshit. Aksahy kumar is a stunt man yet he lives in an oceanside house, which is total crap, and kareena a so called medical interm or whatever is looking more like a model, which is total bakwas, and to praveen and all your friends here is a shocking piece of news to you, the way kareena insulted akshay kumar in the end and throughout the movie insulted him saying he has no IQ is what indian girls from abroad think of guys from India, they don’t give a shit to you guys, only in India just because you’re a doctor engineer that may qualify you to get a girl no matter what you look like but in these countries you have to have so much more, looks personality and know how to respect women which akshay kumar doesn’t do in this movie. But knowing bollywood, the movie has to end on a good note so kareena finally ends up liking him but in real life there is no way that would happen, not in a million years. I’m sure to the young generation sitting in India you guys all think that’s what life is all about in US but its not true. No blonde chicks will follow you and no edcuated girl goes for an uderqualified guy and womaniser got it.

These were some of the things which is why I didn’t like the movie. Javed Jafferi role was stupid but that’s what americans are they are always suing over any little thing so in a comic vein that was shown realistically.

  • im told this is the worst movie ever to have been made . in any language and in any part of the world followed only by ssorma bhopali and lal badshah of Big B ..is is true or people here are lying that its a fantastic movie??????

  • there is a musical beat from some song at the time 48:26 min to 48:36 min which says “na na na na na na” lots of times. can you tell me which song it is and from which album or movie . please help me.

  • SPIDERMAN:THe movie has collected 42 crs nett in india only….and gross 100 crs already worldwide!!!

THis proves it is already have recover its cost!!!so how this movie is disaster hah???

    THis movie is atleast HIT!!

  • All I have to say is that just because a movie might have huge box office collections doesn’t necessarily mean its a good movie. These days movies are just declared hits based on box office collections rather than declaring it a good movie based on the storyline direction acting etc etc. To me box office collections don’t say much, because in the past there have been alot of movies that should have done good business but never did simply because it doesn’t appeal to people.

Reading alot of the comments on this particular review I’m seeing alot of people didn’t like the movie, although a few odd ones did. I personally didn’t like the movie either but yet its got great box office collections. Movies these days are just all about duping people into the movie theatre. If there was a policy for wanting your money back for every movie you didn’t like box office collections for movies that didn’t deserve big collections would be whole lot lower such as kambakht ishq. I saw new york yesterday and I like it alot more. I only went and saw kambakht ishq because I hadn’t been to the movie theatre in months due to the strikes and some of my friends wanted to see it so I just tagged along otherwise I wouldn’t have wasted so much money seeing it and just waited for the dvd to come out.

  • For me, totally a non family & disgusting movie……. the things they hve been shown, can easily be found on hollywood movies…..the things which differentiate bollywood over hollywood (for me) are the emotional & true love feelings which deeply pop up sincerely . well its my opinion and has nothing to do with others

I believe we should promote those movies which has atleast 1% of positive impact on viewers……. be honest & tell me wether U guys would ever let ur children watch this bull shit???? Pardon my language but …….

  • hey dear kiran,i’m not a teenager as you think.i’m a lecturer in st.xaviers mumbai, born in cochin.okay!!!and i’m a movie freak and see many movies before the time you were born!!!and dont bullshit to me about the I Qs and all to me,understood.i have been teaching in various colleges for the last 12 years, and have seen thousands of girls like you both international and northies.i still have dozens of british and american girls as my students.very few are just like you KIRAN.NO DOUBT.dont have any respect for indians.and we clearly know with full proof the culture of you people.its gone upto thelevel of acting in porn movies.okay!!1i’m not generalising, pls understand.we are going to movies just to be entertained, and i’m a huge fan of akshay for last 20years and i will continue to promote akshay upto the end of my life, even in my classes and its worked miracles.and never bullshit on indians.

  • All I can say is that if people start liking movies like this, it just means that people have really really bad tastes. Gone are the days of Charley Chaplin where people used to laugh like crazy for stupid but funny scenes… We need some some good comedy now… even if illogical… something gud… But I don’t know how people can laugh at a movie like Kambakht Ishq….
One sugestion to multiplexes… start selling panadol instead of popcorn and Red Bull instead of Coke… n u’ll earn great profits wid movies like this…I was a big Akshay Kumar fan…. but from now… even if the reviews are 5.5 of 5… I’ll never watch his movies again… as for Kareena… queen of flops…. better get married n live a happy life n stop torturing other people with ur stupid acting

  • I dont understand wat Ms Kiran wants to convey here do u thnk Indian men r all low on moral n confidence.
u might hav seen som opportunist but we giv a damn to the type of grls mentioned by u. for ny genuine Indian
man its the Indian women which is more attractive than the blondes…n i hav seen many (blondes/the type of grl mentioned by u)
who were opportunistic. y take others if u find a good looking guy thr is a high possibility u want him.
    dont talk nonsense here

  • Indicine Team: I think from hundred of comments which I wrote on this website.. u definetly know my taste for movies and which type of comedy movies impress me.. and as I am away. not in my country, I don’t like to waste few days left for me here in London in watching some stupid movie. I couldn’t go thru all the comments and read them on this page except yr review and few comments only.. so please tell me if this movie KI is my kind of movies..the romantic comedy which i’d Love or similar to: Dil Chata Hai, Cheeni Cum, Waqt, Dostana, Masti, No Entry (except few scenes which I didn’t like in Masti & No Entry).

If KI to be considered among these kind of comedy movies.. I don’t mind watching it and wl go n watch it today or tomorrow.. but if it’s cheap comedy and similar to Welcome, Golmaal series, Baagh n Baagh, Hera Pheri.. Kiya Cool hai Hum, Tashan and many others.. no..

    Waiting for your reply.. thx

  • To praveen you just said in some ways or the other what I was trying to say, I never said akshay kumar was bad the movie was bad. I didn’t like be precisely for that reason, what the hell are they trying to portray, not all us second generation indians act like that. I have alot of relatives in india and they said most of the young indians are going to the dogs these days thanks to the influence of western culture but thats not what’s it all about.l Just strutting around in practically no clothes and speaking english doesn’t just make you a westerner.

You said people here act in porn movies and all. As if india doesn’t have porn??? People in India aren’t doing all those things. Just come and see for yourself what your desi bhai’s are up to. They stare at women like they have never seen woman before and they are just ready to jump in bed and have sex. As far as I’m concerned I do have respect for my culture and roots that’s why I didn’t like Kamabakht ishq. You think just by teaching international girls you know it all. Trying getting to know them on personal basis. I’m from Canada and I’ve been to India and i’ve seen thousands of people from india here and I know where I stand in comparison to them.

I never said all Indian guys are low on morals, but movies like kambahkht Ishq to send out a wrong message and that’s not what we’re all about. I like akshay kumar too but that doesn’t mean you have to promote a bad movie. Nobody is doubting his acting capablities but the movie is in question yes. I think you just got pricked because you’re probably dark and can’t get girls. You say you teach and have lots of girls as your students who are british and american or whatever when you teach where do you have the time to get to know them on a personal basis. They are just your students not your friends or girlfriends you try to befriend that a whole different matter. Didn’t you hear at the end of the movie what akshay kumar’s friend aftab said that white girl was just fulfilling her desire she didn’t love him. That’s what whites are for them they need constant entertainment and they get bored very fast and they can never stick on in long term relationship. By the way how do you know how old I am. I watch plenty of old movies I know my culture I know the good things of western culture and the good things of Indian culture got it.

  • Hi Fathiya

I personally didn’t like kambakht Ishq. It just mostly a skin show, in the movie akshay kumar kind of plays this male character who doesn’t believe in marriage and all, and neither does kareena bascially its a cat and dog fight story until the end. Unless you don’t mind leaving your brains at home and don’t have anthing better to do you can go see it. I got a headache. I saw New York and it was a much better movie. As you can see there are alot of people here who didn’t like the movie. i went to the theatre the other day and they actually had put up sign warning families who have kids that kamabakht Ishq has got unsuitable language that may not be appropriate for children so that you tell you where the movie stands.

To all the people out there once again. I’m not hating on akshay kumar but the movie. Sometimes I get the feeling people here don’t read. But the last movie few Akshay kumar has made have not done well, but that’s more because of the story line and direction and all.

  • Fathiya, no comments. We have published the review.. The audience poll is up there below the review, more than 100 user comments have been posted.. Go through them and decide..

  • Fathiya and Kiran’s comments are fantastic and always great to read. But you my friend mange to ruin every possible topic here. Why not contribute something better instead of simpy abusing, cursing and offending?

  • Hey Suniel thanks very sweet of you to say that.

To praveen again, I never assumed you were a teenager okay, like I said earlier just be having an education doesn’t make you all polished you have to be an all rounder to impress girls from here in these countries. I’ve seen plenty of so called educated people who may be academically inclined and all that but in their personal day to day lives they really suck. College or university can make you more knowlegeable but not wiser and certainly not necessarily a good human being, that is something that has to come from within naturally that was what I was trying to say about kambakht ishq. At least in the movie kareena kapoor had a good reason to hate on guys because from childhood she thought guys were users, although at the end with just one riduclous line kiron kher tells her is enough to make her turn 360 degrees which in real life doesn’t happen so to me at least her hating guys seemed more justified unlike our male gigilo stunt man akshay kumar who just changes suddenly which in real life doesn’t happen. As we say in US and Canada once a dog always a dog. What I was trying to say how ridulous the movie was and unrealistic but you praveen went on the defensive and said hey i’m a lecuturer and all that so what??? You still won’t get any girls from here, unless your respect them now don’t tell me your university is crawling with foreign girls and you get to know what all western culture is just by listening to your students or observing their behaviour that too in a country where seats are so scarce compared to the number of students.

You said you know the culture of indians here in abroad, well we can clearly see what indians in india want to see judging from the kind of movies that are being churned just barely are 1 or 2 movies worth seeing each year anymore, and yes I also like to be entertained but it has to be quality entertainment and not garbage like this. I would expect more from a so called lecture at a university who is supposed more academically inclined and not get happy upon seeing a move like kambakht ishq is this what you teach to your students. One last thing I’m not as young as what you think okay, I’m not a teenager either. The way you make yourself sound like you’re a 100 years old and quite frankly i don’t care.

  • thanks RAJ and SUDEEP.kiran, dont waste your time on offending others and big stars in cinema, you cant even get to that level in another 7 lives.and dont be racist…saying you are black and that and this….comlexion never matters anywhere ,have some sort of commonsense.and we indian men are not so crazy over white bitches.i am a married man of age 32 and with a 1 year old son.i dont have to search for another girl as i am happy with my wife who was in love with me for 8 long years bfore our marriage in 2007.i dont hav to tell all this to a kid like you you can never be a girl of age more than 26 years, thats sure. SO KIRAN,try to be mature and never generalise on indian men.and dont try your bullshitting advice to me,better you go teach your parents.and personal basis you told know i know my students just like the prints on my palm thats my attachment to them, totally different from other lecturers.and anybody trying to depromote akshay kumar anywhere ,take my word you got it!!!!!i know what to do ,you wait,….

  • nice one praveen sir.we all are offended with the crap KIRAN mentioned over here.she surely have some ego problems or some bad experiences in the past from men.we all P.G. students watched K I and its total paisa vassool…superb and we loved akshay like hell…he is the king and nobody comes near him in the mastery of comedy, emotion or action.and we heard from NDTV NEWS TODAY THAT OVERALL GROSS COLLECTION HAS TOUCHED 120 CRORES…Thanks to akshay for saving cinema from crisis.
