This is not a movie review but the review of a television serial on the epic Mahabharat by Ekta Kapoor.
I was eagerly looking foward to Ekta Kapoor’s version of Mahabharath titled Kahani Hamare Mahabharat Ki, so much so that I even paid for an add-on package from Tata Sky just to catch Mahabharat every night from Monday to Thursday. Was expecting something not just bigger than the previous Mahabharat by B.R. Chopra, but a better product overall. Very high expectations, i know!
I became a fan of Mahabharat mainly due to the spectacular and historic Mahabharat of those good old days directed by B.R. Chopra and Ravi Chopra. The epic was aired every sunday morning, for 2 years between 1988 – 1990. The great thing about it was every character seemed to be born to play their role. Mukesh Khanna was brilliant as Bheeshma, when you think of Lord Krishna the picture of Nitish Bhardwaj in those costumes still comes to mind. Every other character right from Duryodhan (Puneet Issar), Arjun (Arjun), Shakuni (Gufi Paintal), Bhim (Praveen Kumar), Dhritrashtra (Girja Shankar), Draupadi (Rupa Ganguly), Karna (Pankaj Dheer), Yudhistir, Nakul, Sahadev and even Drona were just perfect for their roles. Its like you cant imagine anyone else in those legendary roles.
So it was an uphill task for Ekta Kapoor right from the day she decided to remake the epic. After the first episode that was telecasted last night on 9X at 9 PM, i was sorely disappointed.
It looked like a normal Ekta Kapoor’s Saas Bahu serial! To start off it wasnt realistic, atleast Ekta Kapoor should have had a look at Jodhaa Akbar, a costume drama which was presented in a very realistic way by Ashutosh Gowariker.
The camera was rolling all over the faces from every angle possible, a lot of thundering, lightening and noise. The characters from whatever little we got to see of them, just didnt look the character, they looked like models with a perfectly toned body in a costume drama for a historical. Maybe its too early to judge them, time will tell. The costumes except for Duryodhan’s was pretty good.
Coming to the performances, Anita Hansandani as draupadi, one of the most important characters in Mahabharat, was horrible. Dialogue delivery was the biggest flaw. She shrieked at the top of her voice, cried like she does in all those saas bahu series and in comparison to Rupa Ganguly, failed miserably. The intensity in her performance was just lacking. She made the strong character of Draupadi look weak! Shakuni is bald, he was pretty good although his laughter was sometimes annoying. Dushassan looked evil, performed well. Duryodhan looked like a evil superman in those costumes. Dont want to comment on Aryan Vaid’s performance just yet, more on him in the coming days!
Overall, after one episode it has been a major disappointment. Hopefully Ekta Kapoor can make it more realistic and Anita can improve her performance! Will keep updating this post, who knows the characters might grow on me and my opinion might change.

Episode 2 (8th July 2008) – Ved Vyas starts narrating the epic tale of Mahabharat to Lord Ganesh. Shantanu is smitten by Ganga’s beauty, accepts all her conditions and marries her. Ganga kills his sons one after another, till their 8th son, Bheeshma is born. The pace is fantastic, doesnt drag like most historicals. Performances were top notch today. Saakshi Tanwar, Parvathi of Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki, looks ethereal as Ganga. Kiran Karmarkar, Om of Kahani, is perfect for the role of Shantanu. The locales of Ladakh are breath taking. I still hate the excessive background music, thundering and camera zooming in on the faces of actors. How i wish, Ekta makes it slightly more realistic and different from her daily soaps. More tomorrow.. Today’s episode rating – 8 / 10.
Episode 3 (9th July 2008) – Shantanu breaks his promise, questions Ganga. Ganga reveals her identity and goes into detail about the curse that they got from Brahma, also the curse of the 7 kids that she eventually killed by drowning them into the pure water of River Ganga. She takes Devavrat (Bheeshma) their 8th son with her, promising Shantanu that she would return him back to the place he belongs to, when the king of Hastinapur needs him. Devavrat is trained and educated by Parashuram. Devavrat, now 16, returns to Hastinapur and blocks the waterflow of Ganga with his arrows… That ends the 3rd episode of the epic Mahabharat.
The 3rd episode was much slower in pace compared to the 2nd, filled with excessive dialogues and unnecessary special effects. Performances were once again good. The actor portraying the role of young Devavrat, suits the character. 3rd episode rating – 5 / 10
Episode 4 (10th July 2008) – Devavrat and his father battle, Ganga intervenes and reveals their identity to each other. Devavrat is now committed to his father and Hastinapur. 16 more years pass by and Devavrat has now matured..
The 4th episode was like Kanav said in the comments below, a complete disaster. The background music is deafening, trademark Ekta Kapoor slo-mo effects and camera work continue to irritate. A realistic feel, so very important for a historical is completely missing. 4th episode rating – 3 / 10
As a professional music composer of Bengal I would like to say that the background music and the background song of Ekta Kapur’s Mahabharat is not all up to the mark. There is no mythological touch in it. Actually no body knows what type of songs was at the time of Mahbharat. But in all previous mythological bollywood movie the famous music composer like Vasant Desai, C.Ramchandra, Chitragupta, Laxmikant-Payrelal, Kalyanji-Anandji , Rajkamal selected few Ragas like CHANDRAKAUNS, MALKAUNSE, DARBARI-KANARA, KALAVATI, BHAIRABI and by applying frequently in their composition( Of course the songs are modern, commercial songs) in mythological movies like SAMPURNA RAMAYANA,(1960PROBABLY) PAVANPUTRA HANUMAN, (1958 probably), MAHBHARAT(1965), HARISH CHANDRA TAARAMATI(1964 probably), HARIDARSHAN(1973), HAR HAR MAHADEV(1970 probably), B.R CHOPRA’S MAHABHARAT they establish a “ mythological touch” in a mythological movie. It can not be physically defined. It is a precedent. It should be realized by heart. Particularly the songs composed in raga CHANDRAKAUNSE AND MALKAUNSE are considered to be the most effective in mythological hindi commercial movie. The music of Ekta Kapur Mahabharat failed to fulfill these criteria. It is just shouting and full of noise. I have not seen the name of the music composer in the title. But who may be he should take lesson from our previous great music composers whose name are mentioned above by listening to their music. I also composed many tune in many devotional and mythological music video and tele-films. I always try to give mythological touch in my composition. At least it should be different from a song of a modern movie.
I watched the few episode of Ekta kapur’s Mahabharat.I am very much depressed to see this serial. It is an AMERICANISED MAHABHARAT so far as costumes are concerned.Are we watching the movie of THE KING ALEXANDER? WHY THE COSTUME OF ANCIENT GREEK HAVE BEEN USED IN INDIAN MYTHOLOGY? In fact there is a contrversy regarding the dress. Nobody have seen what type of dress Arjun usually wore.But IT SHOULD BE WHAT MAJOR PEOPLE HAVE GOT AN IMPRESSION ABOUT THEIR DRESSES.mRS kAPUR SHOULD SEE THE b.R cHOPRA’S mAHABHARAT AND THE OLD FEATURE FILM MAHABHARAT by A.A Nadiatwala acted by Pradip kumar, Padmini and Dara Singh.the looks and posture of the actor and actress are disgusting(Just like modern movie as if in which all are playing the role of mafia don). THIS MAHABHARAT IS VERY HARMFULL FOR NEW GENERATION because we have already seen the previous serial and movie and also read different books on Mahabharat.But most of the children of new generation do not know the story of mahabharat and they have not seen the old serial and movie. So they will have a wrong Idea about the characters of ONE OUR MOST POPULAR EPIC.
It is my request to each and everybody who are watching Ekta Kapur’s Mahabharat to raise voice against the telecast of this horrible AMERICANISED STYLE OF INDIAN MYTHOLOGY.It is very much harmful to our children. The looks and dresses of the actor and actresses are like a westernised mafia don. The costumes are just like ancient Greek. The standing style, the way of dialogue throwing of the actors are as if they have come to a disco club. The most horrible is DRAUPADI. Oh my god! toal westernised face.sHE IS JUST SHOUTING.hORRIBLE ACTING.
What a horrible widow dress Satyabati and Amba are wearing.It is just like wedding dress of a English lady.Ekta Kapur is fully influenced by AMERICAN CULTURE which she has focused on one of our Great epic like MAHABHARAT, SHAME, SHAME. Where is the long moustache of Santanu, Bhishma, Kans, Duryodhan? Does Ekta Kapur know that Moustache was the prestige of a Khatriya Raja? or she wants to write a new Mahabharat in westernised style? ankit said so what the ppl are wearing and hw they are looking. That means in ankit’s opinion santanu can easily wear jeans and tea shirt? oh? the style and test of the people may change in course of time.But this change should not be reflected in our mythology. the face make-up of Vishma, shantanu,duryodhan, and kans are just like a actros and actrsses of enghlish cow boys movie. What a horrible face of Dhritarastra.Totally AMERICANISED FACE.Ekta kapur’s Mahabharat is insulting to one of our great epic.Probably mr Ankit and Mr Rajguru have no idea about this epic. The selection of actor,the costume, the way of acting, all are fully westernised. That is why I am against the telecast of this sereial.It is harmfull to our new generation. I don’t how Ekta Kapur has drawn the potrait of SriKrishna?

Udayan I dont’ have any knowledge about music , but I agree with you.Somebody here said the title track is good , which I never found apt for epic , more peppy , not divine, I did not react as I don’t have knowledge abt music.Surprisingly Ekta has good record of title tracks like of Kutumb and Kasauti .. ,and title track of this Mahbharatha belongs to this genere , nothing sacred or divine in this.
Half knowledge is a dangerous thing , Ekta is a perfect example of this, she experimented with Mahabharath too much without knowing much details.Kans sending soldiers to kill boys , yaar mathura was a republic and not a monarch like hastinapur , he acted like a dictator while killing devaki’s sons , and he cannot take such steps to enrage ppl , he sent Putna and others maintaining high level of secrecy.His killing devaki’s sons had earlier brought him much disregard .By the way yashoda is looking too young ,Yashoda should be around 35 .I have stopped watching it like eeshan, caught a glimpse on monday only .Udhyan you too should otherwise you will get angry .She could show that kans was a result of rape(I dont know if she has showed this) to extend the episodes rather than showing some shoddy twists.Nevertheless let people enjoy who loves watching it, when I was in my teens , I would like every other film , later on when I saw Rajkapoor’s films and Gurudutt , I realized those were the real films and now I dont like most of the films of today.The same will happen to its lovers only , once they get to see sth meaningful (of which chances are very rare as all are money digger) ,they themselves will realize that this mahabharat is dud.Till then peace to all.

I wish Lord Ganesha’s character was protrayed more realistically. It is quite disappointing, that they couldnt get the look right at all.
Overall, this Mahabharata has a uphill task against the Mahabharta of late 80s.
Overall score: Not Good Yet. But i am hopeful.
Ramayana on NDTV Imagine is TOP NOTCH. Its Pretty Good and very realistic, probably at fraction of the cost of making Mahabharata. This is what is called GOOD DIRECTION.

Well… now coming bak to KHMK… Shakuni has improved- he is behaving less like Mohini of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi than what he did before! Even the other characters are improved!
The difference between the look and feel of Bheeshm (young and old) is very well put to show his ageing! But I wish the same was applied for Ambika and Ambalika.. they are still looking the same notorious young girls and their dialogue delivery makes them feel so bubbly and chirpy- they never sound serious!
Also there was one time when I thought KHMK team was eliminating black but now again I think they are much into black.. Dhritarashtra, Pandu, Vidur, Bheem, etc are still wearing too much black dresses!
The team has also improved with special effects! Yashoda getting to see that her son Sri Krishna is an avtaar of Narayan (Vishnu Bhagwaan) was shown very nicely (though it was the same peacock feather travelling from heaven) But putting all that in the oral cavity of baby Sri Krishna was very well done!

Child Sri Krishna is good. But the Hastinapur part is horrible.The make-up of Shakuni’s father is like the character in the movie “Fantoosh” who was shouting “Chika Pika Rika”. This Americanised serial is very much harmfull to new generation. All characters looks like a mafia don of a modern film.
Yep! The show sucks more and more with each passing day. First they have their stupid camera movements and a really bad editing. Then you have actors who don’t look their age ,forget characters and now they have started meddling with facts. Someone has to send the entire crew to a film school so that they can actually learn a few basics. In fact I like what sagar productions did with Jai shri krishen on colours. Maybe they r not too good with CG (still better than kahani ekta ki mahabharat ki)but atleast their characters and character costumes depict the era correctly. and thankfully we don’t hav a bare chested four packed abb nandlal of gokul like ekta’s mahabharat.
First of all lets stop comparing the OLD mahabharat with new one. I am no big Ekta kapoor’s fan but has to be said that her effort in making Mahabharat something new has worked in big ways. I agree that costumes are not upto the mark but no one has saw practically what they used to wear in those ancient times, its a directors imagination. You just cant comment on that part. Yes initially the actors were not up to the mark in terms of dialogue delivery which was suppose to be pure hindi with some sanksrit combination but they found it difficult. But as the serial progressed they are now getting into the characters and are finding easy in delivering those words with stong impact. The appreciative of all is Ronit roy who has delivered a superlative performance. The strenght he has shown in an already strong character of Bheeshma is commendable. He is going to create a huge name for himself with every passing episodes. Plus the background scores and title song is really superb, it really gives goose bumps. Now dearly waiting for the other important characters of Mahabharat like Krishna and Karan and the rest. Kudos to the whole team.
Srikant, Ok I understand your point.But I think you should agree that too much westernised touch is there in Ekta’s Mahabharat. It is totally unfair. Why don’t we compare it with OLD Mahabharat? Mahabharat can’t be modified. I know that there is a controversy regarding costume. But Ekta should respect the imagination of the public regarding costume of mythological character lying in their mind years after years. Why Ekta put Greek type of costume? Is it a Greek Mythology? Regarding Background Title song I am requesting pl listne to the old Mahabharat title song. Those songs uplifted the whole situation. There is only noise and mad rythm in Ekta’s Mahabharat song.

i again gt intrst to follow mahabharata few days ago and i watched it for 4-5 episodes………im a staunch hindu cant see like this..even i stop thm who ever my frnd sms me the sms jokes abt draupadi arjuna rama and all….i first say thm make jokes on guru nanak….prophet..jesus..whn u cant make jokes on them thn why u making and enjoying these type of jokes….and here in ekta’s mahabharata…the same thngs going on……only ohe thng they did is corrct….that is naming duryodhan as suyodhan..coz his real name was suyodhan not duryodhan….in ancient histry it is suyodhan…..in that episode i saw….suyodhan was kidnapped….thn shakuni wife coming to her room where shakuni was sitting…..and there the background music was same as other of ektas serials..whn some funny thng happn…….i mean wat she is potraying….shakuni was such a serious man……..in recnt one bhima eating banannas in kitchen..thn guards fighting….uff……i wont go to clothes again….coz manish malhotra and ekta done a blunder with it……..only headbands……..hey people u obserbserved one thng….alll people were in six packs abs……even in mathua vrindavan vasudeva…or here suyodhan….anyone u see all r in six pack abs….dhitrashtra somewat near to it too……r they making some type of gayparade……..building show…..and one thng all chest is compltly shaved…….i mean no manhood in them……

udayan….actually in our indin culture…even in mughal period all people use to wear hat….its their concpt that to cover their head..only brahmins used to uncover their heads in that time but sometimes only…well dear….it was the tradition of crowns (mukut)…theres a also a proper kavach….shoulder pads..and all..but in this they r not showin anythng..coz i studied about greeks too…but they inspired by greeks….but not like them…..even they use to wear somethng….in place of crowns they r wearing hairbands….to show the sigh of their empire…thats it…but its a blunder…..coz of it our next generation will get wrong message…and thn….they will make fun of it…by seeing theses gay guys…….and like draupadi.and all……mata ambalika..and all..yaar kitni budhi ho gayi hai but sab ke baal kale ke kale……..

ekta kapoor one request take even rajot tokas in your mahabharat who has done work in prithviraj chauhan and take even his all four friends who has allready in same serial give them a some nice role in mahabharat . mahabharat is the one of the best serial of ekta kapoor . ekta u are doing a great serial. i wish that people of india and who stay in aboard they watch this for a long time.
Comeon Eeshan , children do what they see their parents do .Jitendra in 80’s , perhaps few years after Ekta’s birth had some very over dramatized films ,though commercially hits , mainly with Sridevi and Jayaprada , in which one actress has to neccessarily die.Songs were like ‘ek aankh maru to ladka pat jaye ‘ or ‘gori tere ang ang main roop rang ke saje hue hain kalse’.Ekta lifted many storyline from his dad films like Koshish was lifted from Jyoti (Hema and Jeetendra),some tracks in KSKBT from Arpan(Reena Roy and Jeetu) .It is sad that actors can’t do anything until good story and screenplay ,so Jeetendra ji could not put to blame, but producers could do much , and if it is successful like Ekta then she could create a history.On Tuesday I just caught the glimpse of this dud and which shakuni and his sons were saying dialogues like of Kadar Khan. Shakuni says he doubts if they are his sons and sons reply only doubt , mother says we are gift of god.What is this stupidity? such dialogues in an epic ,I think she is highly impressed with Kadar khan , again 80’s successful double meaning actor but forgetable too.
Shakuni says he has to do something for himself else pandavs will make him like beggar.After this I could not muster courage to see further. Shakuni was a king , why would he be like beggar even if Pandanvs were the king , his only concern was duryodhan and not himself.He left his kingdom for him.
He should be a grey character, but black will also do , but definitely he should not be shown fool.
Ekta through out her span never tried to do anything which could create awareness.See Balika vadhu , out of the box serial and very relevant too , something for the upliftment of the society.Even title track is so good , all those who are praising title track of mahabharat should give an ear to balika vadhu.Performances of the actors are good especially dadi sa (surekha sikri),Though I can say there are many insyncs in Balika Badhu also like dialect and dresses since I belong to Rajasthan , but that does not matter if conviction is right.The serial is of the production house of ‘Saat phere’ which means Balika badhu will be extended further and ultimately be ruined , but for the time being it is very good.My favorite serial is Second Chance on Firangi , though it has come to an end , but performances are stupendous , every character is played by damn good actors.Brilliant use of facial expressions and eyes. no thundering and lightening , totally superlative serial , Just watch how negative characters are portrayed , so sublime and subtle , but unfortunately the serial has come to its end.
Suyodhan the only right thing in the serial so far.Ekta said 4 unit of directors are working on khmk and certainly Hastinapur director is the worst.One who said you dont know what the dresses would have been , then I must say ‘uttariya’ is missing in every male character , no need of bare chested always.You can play with the fabric , but not the dressing style itself.Big pecs for princes and Kshatriyas are always welcome and perhaps shown right too, but put uttariya on them at least not bare always.
I dont know if raas has been shown in khmk but I hope the song would not be like ‘Ek aankh maru to gopi pat jaaye ,duji aankh maroon to gokul hil jaaye’.Many will not believe but Ekta’s time too has come to an end , she would disappear in 2 years only .She has lost the chance of becoming a legend .She would be remembered as highly successful but regressive serial maker.
Well.. I have been one of the regular audiences of KHMK except for the first week, and I think the show is not too bad though it is not too good!
For no reason there are the cartoon sounds and funny expressions in the show! It was ok when they showed the humor about the apetite of Bheema for the first time… but… is it necessary to make humor on the same case in every episode? Also, when I look at some people in Hastinapur, I can make out the fact that they are wearing wigs(false hair)! And why so much humor about Shakuni who is supposed to be the main negative character!
Some work on Sri Krishna is done very well… for example the choice of the actor playing Sri Krishna these days is very good- his mysterious smile well suits the notorious as well as romantic character which is needed! But when they were introducing this actor in KHMK, they showed that the kids in Gokul formed the group to get to the butter from the pot and then Sri Krishna came running and climbed up.. but I always thought that it was Sri Krishna who discovered this way of forming the group and climbing on each other to get the butter! I dont know if what I always thought was wrong or what they showed is wrong!
The pace with which the incidents are happening is good… Suyodhan was kidnapped and immediately found in next few days unlike the typical soaps which would have shown this incident for atleast several weeks! Thankfully they showed only the important evils that Kans did to kill Balkrishna (Putna mausi, etc) instead of showing each and every incident!
Also, these days they aren’t showing Ved Vyas every now and then as they did previously! Its just that the narration runs in background! This is well done!
Overall rating: partially meeting expectations!

I do agree that Balika Vadhu is the better serial, and Ekta never used this powerful media for any betterment of the society. performances in Balika .. of even child actors are good.Can’t say abt second chance , but it would be good as Siddharth said
