Happy New Year Overseas Collections and Worldwide Total

Happy New YearHappy New Year has opened very well in the overseas markets. The opening is the biggest of the year, ahead of Bang Bang, which is something that you expect from a film starring Shahrukh Khan.

From the number of screens that have been reported, Happy New Year has collected around Rs 7.5 crore in the United States of America and Canada, Rs 3.75 crore from United Kingdom, Rs 2.1 crore in Pakistan, Rs 1.7 crore from Australia and New Zealand, Rs 14 crore from UAE/GCC. The film has also fared fairly well in other overseas territories.

The worldwide gross of Happy New Year now stands at around Rs 133 crore till Saturday. The first weekend worldwide total should cross 190 crore and even touch 200 crore gross if the Sunday business from India and overseas exceed expectations.

Overall, a huge weekend all over. Not quite as good as Dhoom 3, which did outstanding business overseas even though it released during the dull pre-Christmas period overseas. But Dhoom was a brand and the second film in the series (starring Hrithik Roshan) also did very well. When the final overseas numbers come in, it will be the biggest overseas grosser for Shahrukh Khan bettering his previous release Chennai Express.

Happy New Year Overseas Box Office Collections Breakdown (all figures in Indian rupees)

  • UAE/GCC – 14 crore
  • USA / Canada – 7.5 crore
  • UK – 3.75 crore
  • Pakistan – 2.1 crore
  • Australia and New Zealand – 1.7 crore
  • India ‘gross’ collections – 104 crore (including entertainment taxes)
  • Total worldwide gross – 133 crore

  • Being an NRI I can totally see why overseas collections aren’t that impressive. We all have diwali parties within friend circles and temples on weekends. We had two parties this weekend and another one next Saturday. I had to squeeze in HNY between kids classes and Diwali party. Considering the type of movies that are liked and made in India lately this movie was good. Entertaining and engaging a lot better than D3 IMO.

  • who stopped Srk to release is movie on Christmas.now diwali became full period for Srk fans.2 days before all fans were barking 200 cr sureshot in overseas when it broke record in domestic.hahaha.too much fun.poor fans

  • Lol nice to see @Damnnn @Trini and @Chikrum cry about HNY’s underperformance overseas..looks like these fools forgot that CE was a masala movie and historically SRK movies have done great business in overseas territories..specially US and UK..

    Too much Fun!!! :D

  • @Devil..are you crazy..?? BOI also underreported D3 collections..also they call Talaash a Semi Hit whereas the rest of the trade has declared it a hit..BOI themselves keep decreasing the collections and change verdicts after sometime which is quite stupid!!!

  • Diwali is not suitable period for overseas business . Christmas nd eid r the best periods for overseas business.

  • Still srk proved again that he is the most dominant star in the overseas market. I think its a great business .

  • all manipulated reports.
why all of you want to project this as a big success???
when all critics have slammed this as a bad movie, and worst by many of my friends who watched it, why you ppl have to still go on praising it??
are you proud of such products in the industry??
where are we going by such movies?? let the producers be happy, we dont want the media( meant to be educated and intelligent)to go all praises for trash like this. a movie made on a budget on 160 crores, need to get atleast 250 crores to be a blockbuster. wait for another 10 more days, before it ticks over there.
i’m not against any star here, i’m against bad movies.
it deserves to be a trash…let it be a trash.

  • @Navin

I completely agree with what you said. Dhoom 1 was an experimental movie which was a sleeper hit.
Hrithik Roshan, a popular young actor stepped in as a villain and YRF found a franchise could be made of dhoom

But when Aamir stepped in after the thunderous success of 3 idiots, dhoom suddenly became THE biggest brand. Till then it was Munna Bhai, Golmaal which were considered a franchise. So rather than saying Aamir is because of dhoom, I’d say Dhoom is because of Aamir.

And the collections were tower high because many Aamir admirers like me, who hadn’t seen a single mainstream movie of his since 3 idiots went for first day first show.

Honestly. I didn’t like the movie but the success of dhoom is purely because of Aamir.

    • @gj007, Dhoom 2 was as big a success as Dhoom 3. The opening was equally big back in 2006.

You can read this article that we published in 2012 (before Dhoom 3). http://www.indicine.com/movies/bollywood/best-sequel-franchise/

Munnabhai got the most votes, followed by Dhoom series.

Munnabhai is undoubtedly the most loved franchise, but content has to be extra-ordinary for it to work. Dhoom will be watched by all, if Salman / SRK / Hrithik / Akshay do the next film, it will again break all records. Don can be converted into a massy-franchise, but Farhan decided not to make it a typical masala film – which is why Don 2 didn’t work in smaller centres. Krrish and Golmaal are huge too.

  • there is many holiday in diwali so if he is the real king of bollywood then why he is not playing movie in no holidays

  • Excellent reply by indicine to navin and gj007…
Dhoom is a big brand today..no matter which A list actor do,it will break all the records..
I want to see Hrithik once again in D4…

  • @Indicine – reply to you is a must. D2 was a very good movie and hrithik and ash were awesome in the movie. That is the reason why it succeeded.
Similarly D3 is also successful becoz of the new touch given by aamir’s superb act.
If other actors were there, dhoom 3 may have been a big hit but it will not be an Atbb like it is now. The reason for it simple that they wont like to do things differently like aamir did.
it is aamir who saved the movie else it would have been a big flop since it was looking similar to other dhoom movies jn the beginning with same crappy stunts and same kind of heists.
it is aamir whose acting was the savior of this movie.

    • @gj007, the opening of Dhoom 2 was so huge that extra chairs were added at single-screens to accommodate the huge crowd. There were mini-riots outside a few mass-centres. It managed a near 100% opening on first day, which is impossible for films in todays times because of such wide releases and number of shows. Anyway, glad that we have retained so many readers over the years. Amazing that some readers have been visiting from 2006-07 when we started the website.

@Divya, the trade is a little more lenient with the ‘All Time Blockbuster’ these days. The only true ATBB is 3 Idiots. If you look at the return-on-investment, Aashiqui 2 is a bigger hit than Dhoom 3. D3 was made at a cost of 150 crore. India share was about 145, overseas 75. Kick wasn’t worthy to be declared a blockbuster, because couple of individual distributors lost some money, Bang Bang one distributor lost more than 1.8 crore. Not many people like reading such things, and for most trade analysts it’s all about fan / star pleasing these days…

On the other point that you make about ‘doing things differently’, Salman, SRK or Akshay would have done the film very differently too. Who knows, it might have worked better than Aamir’s version.

  • @indicine

Thanks for responding. Well I had no idea about dhoom 2 collections. I knew that it was an all time blockbuster (till ghajini broke its record) But I never knew it had a record breaking opening.

And I didn’t mention don and Krrish because I was stating that dhoom worked largely because of the intrigue factor. We know what to expect from don and Krrish but people like me were curious to see what ‘brand Aamir khan’ can add to this franchise.

But yeah, don and Krrish are equally big. Personally my favorite is Munna Bhai and I had in fact voted Munna Bhai on your poll in 2012. :)

I think what works in dhoom franchise is, the protagonist keeps changing with each movie. So the fans get more and more curious about it. That’s one unique thing about dhoom.

  • @ indicine i heared that at the time of sanjay dutt’s khalnayak people watch the movie without chairs also cuz of so much crowd its true?

  • Wooooooooooou….!!!!!
There is Only one King in the
    BOLLYWOOD…….
    Who Is ….Only Shahrukh khaaaan!

  • today our club recieved 50cancellations…massive drop repprted from other indiawalle also…super…the debacle has started and
lets see the weeping faces of frah and companywe are very very happy with this repose…

  • also true is krk review ..his review matches with mine…my prediction is rock solid…and it will prove today when the film crashe out…thats the best verdict for us
    n lesson lerrnt fterseeingthisfilmm
many complined that they were not entertained neither they had the impact of the movie

  • @indicine – it will be wrong to say D3 wasnt an all time blockbuster since the amount of business it did is comparable to atbb. It has broken 3very circuit record that exist except for mumbai. Plus if return of investment is d criteria for atbb then I guess raaz or some films which does 10 times dr budget will be the only ones which are atbb. So that logic is flawed. D3 is the only true blockbuster since 3 idiots becoz it did extraordinary business be it domestic or overseas.

Now coming to the point where you said that they might have done things differently. The only point here is this franchise already broke on the style quotient once hrithik made D2 what it is. It is nw even difficult for him to overshadow his own performance as proved in bang bang.
So dhoom needed a bit of fresh air which was provided by impeccable act by aamir. I am nt saying shahrukh or salman cant repeat tat but they r nw stuck in their image which their fans love. If they try to anything different they fail so it is very difficult for them to make D3 what it became and believe it or not it ws all due to aamir.

  • Only reason I comment here is becoz you consider D3’s success is cause of the brand. But please clarify that how far can a brand take a film. You saw what happened in case of krissh 3.
Again I can agree if you say aamir and dhoom brand are a potent combination but in another article you said the same thing where you said dhoom 3’s per day average collection of 27crs was due to brand.
if thats d case y dont u say the same in case of Ce which is combination of rohit and srk brand since rohit himself can give big openers as in case of SR.
I would request you when pk becomes an ATBB please dont say it ws becoz of raju hirani

  • @Indicine…Please be advised, the best time to release a movie in the overseas market, mainly western countries, is the December period. As already stated numerous times, it is school holidays from mid December, university holidays from beginning of December, work schedule decreases from mid December and many people atake their annual leave from mid December onwards. On top of all this, most large corporations are closed from 19/20 December onwards or operate on skeleton staff.

Diwali on the other hand is not a holiday or festive season and everyone is at work, school kids are having exams, there is the year 12 finals exams, there is the u oversight mid semester assessments etc. it a on of the worst periods to release a movie.

    Let’s put things into perspective.

Can you please report the total 3 day figure of overseas market..?

  • @babaji

That reply was not for me you fool- I know brand value and I know Aamirs brand value is greater than Dhoom brand value- dont want to discuss that anymore and especially with a village idiot like you…!

Coming to the second point- thullu you know very well what one can expect if Akki starred in Dhoom 3 or next installment- we would get Khiladi Akki- film would be flop- akkis brand value may put off Dhoom lovers as he would bring nothing unique to the franchise- Aamir brought his intensity to the franchise and Hrithik brought his panache/ flamboyancy to the franchise. Some actors are made for a Dhoom film but Akki Sir is not one of those.

  • @indicine we both know business is increasing year on year so it wont be any surprise to see next Dhoom film (if there is one) beat Dhoom 3s collections. On the flip side we both also know the business of Aamirs films (commercial) too well increase over the next few years- it be interesting too see if a Dhoom 4 film with King or bhai would be able to match or better Aamirs movie of those times/ same yr of release…!

I believe you are underplaying Aamirs contribution to Dhooms success so will wait patiently to see what business a Dhoom 4 film does in the same year as an Aamir film- my bet is that the Brand Aamir film will come out on TOP….!

  • @indicine

    Well well well!!!
How hard you’ll are trying to attribute the success of Dhoom 3 to the brand and not to Aamir.
Well get your facts straight..Aamir in a commercial movie is by far the biggest star than anyone out there.

Aamir in a movie like CE would have easily crossed 300 cr….brand value of a movie is not everything…the brand value of the star is more important.

HR in BB was like himself in Dhoom 4….we all know what was the result…..couldn’t gross half of Dhoom 3.

So when Aamir, who has broken opening records with films like Mangal Pandey, RDB, Fanaa, Ghajini and 3 Idiots, does it once again with Dhoom 3, I know whom to attribute the success to.

Eagerly awaiting what will your excuse be once PK breaks the opening records!!!!

  • @Aman & Navin – Very well said
I love to see the comments of genuine movie lovers like you guys. I have been following Indicine since long and have noticed your comments.
Coming to the topic at hand, let me tell you guys Aamir is the only actor amongst all the khans for whom there is no dedicated fan following but everyone be it a salman fan or shahrukh fan or hrithik fan everyone watches Aamir’s movie because he commands a respect. That is why a masala entertainer like Dhoom 3 was such a big hit.
Attributing the success of D3 to brand is funny because if the movie is not well made it will never succeed. Just see what happened to Bang Bang.
Also just go to imdb and open the 3 idiots page. You will see the fan following Aamir commands amongst non indians who have watched his various movies and appreciates it.
That is one of the major reasons for Dhoom 3’s success in overseas.

I would love to post comments on Indicine and remind him of his comments of dhoom brand once PK releases and do blockbuster business in both domestic & Overseas.

  • @Divya @Aman @Navin bhai

awesome comments..i have been a fan of AK since his “Pehla Nasha” days which is the first ever Bollywood song i heard in my life..even some of his duds like Afsana Pyar Ka was also a watchable movie even though it flopped back then..also his movie choices have been always interesting since the beginning of his career..be it JJWS, AAA, Rangeela, DCH(where he was offered Akshaye Khanna’s role initially), Sarfarosh, 3I and even D3..

He has been one actor who has delivered entertaining movies with some sense and has carried the cinema forward!!! and as @Divya said, you get to see the comments from fans on iMDB too where very few of his movies are rated below 7.5.. Also his movies are such that it will be remembered for many geneerations to come.. I have barely seen anybody speaking bad about Aamir’s movies(with the exception of Talaash and D3). Also his characters like Amar from AAA, Bhuvan from Lagaan, Akaash from DCH, Rancho from 3I were memorable. During my schooldays, Ghulam Rings which Aamir wore in the movie were in demand and lot of schoolkids and college-goers used to flaunt it along with friendship bands and COOL necklace from K2H2.

Coming to the topic of Dhoom series, i myself had watched D2 in Central theatre at Mangalore on the second day of its release during my college days with friends. The craze was unbelievable..something on par with ETT and D3.. lot of whistles, hooting, coin throwing on the screens and @Indicine was right..some extra chairs were arranged to accomodate few more people to watch the movie.. even at Central this happened.. so my view is that.. Hrithik raised the standard of Dhoom with style and class to such an extent that even his Bang 2 looked pale.. but AK added grace and intensity to it and raised it notches above..even D3 which was average for me worked purely because of the intensity Aamir had given to the dual roles..

and i am sure that he will challenge Shahid Kapoor with PK as evident from the trailer..and hoping PK to be an evergreen movie after 3I..

    Cheers!!!
