It’s the biggest film of the month, but ‘Dear Zindagi’ releases at a time when the industry is struggling for a success. The ‘Post Diwali’ releases have been dull with ‘Rock On 2’, ‘Tum Bin 2’ and ‘Force 2’ biting the dust. Can ‘Dear Zindagi’ give the industry its much-needed hit? Can the film, riding on Shah Rukh Khan’s star power, get a good initial on Friday morning?
Factors in favour of Dear Zindagi
- The big factor is going to be SRK, his presence should bring in a lot more people to theatres on Friday.
- The young audience love Alia Bhatt. Her last two films ‘Udta Punjab’ and ‘Kapoor and Sons’ did well with the same target audience.
- The promos have worked, it looks like a fun-happy-urban film.
The concerns for Dear Zindagi
- Demonetisation could still have an impact of around 5-10% on film business.
- Music has been a mixed bag, only one song (title track) has become popular.
- Dear Zindagi is a niche film, the target audience is small and limited to a few cities only.
Considering its limited appeal, the costs are on the higher side for ‘Dear Zindagi’. To recover costs, the film has to collect around 65 crore mark and to achieve these numbers and more for ‘Hit’ status, the word-of-mouth is going to be important.

As far as the lifetime collections are concerned, 75 crore seems to be the upper limit for the film unless it finds wider acceptance and does well at ‘Tier 2’ cities.

Dear zindagi review
Hi Indicine… It has released here in the UAE and I have just watched the night show.
The film is very beautiful in start and the story is woven around Kiara in a very delicate and subtle way which shows common social challenges faced by a working single woman. As the story progresses Kiara’s relations with men in her life, her family and her friends show her mental dilemma. Enters SRK, and here the film slightly shifts to his perspective and from here as the story progresses you are more and more want to see SRK instead of Kiara, in the second half SRK has taken a large role, but he looks convincing as the counsellor.
Overall it’s a film for everyone, especially the youth. The direction is good, dialogues are intelligent, beautiful cinematography and the screenplay is inspiring. It’s a clean film to be watched with family also. The editing should have been a little snappier, over 2hrs long it feels a little lengthy but SRK’s presence keeps the interest build up.
The urban audience will love the movie and critics too, the later might feel the slight shift in story in the second half towards SRK a bit ‘loosing the track’ but it’ll get positive reviews for the subject and it’s treatment.

Why is the budget high? SRK and Dharma and Guari are all producers.. so no fees , just a share in the profit, right?
The film released here in Camada on Wednesday and I’ve seen it already.
For people planning to go:
1) Do not wait for Shahrukh in the first half, he’ll come in late.
2) It is a ‘niche’ film with a lot of talk, emotions and psycology. Please have realistic expectations.
3) Shahrukh brings in more freshness to the screen than Alia does (because he is very natural with his act).
4) There’s less fun and more art.
5) Try and enjoy small moments and things like how the room is set, what furniture is there etc because these small things will hold big importance towards the end.
To conclude, it is a slow paced, beautiful movie which a select section would love and others would not simply because it is not their taste.
Opening 7.8 cr lifetime 58 cr. One more flop for srk.
@indicine I just watched his flick last night here in Toronto complex,it’s awful..people left midway after the interval ,coz after some point it becomes so awful that one starts scratching their head..Performance are top class but movie is so over philosophical that to say a one word it will take 10 mins ..to sump up they say a lot to tell little. it’s another disappointment for me after mohenjo daro and fan..even the classes will start feeling restless ,forget masses..

i think if WOM is excellent it might have a chance to do between 65-75cr. It will definitely recover its budget and will be declared a HIT at BO. (From a Salman Fan who loved the promos & songs of Dear Zindagi)

Watched the movie today in a housefull screen here in the States. Alia delivers an awesome performance. You need to watch the scene where she finds the root cause of her problem in life and also confronts her parents. SRK the actor makes a comeback after Chak De India. Nice direction by Gauri Shinde complimented by a good story and superb dialogues. 4/5 stars from my end.

Collections don’t matter for anymore. They have given up.If audiences reject every srk film they will say audience love for films r fake.The only people who will continue to praise and love srk will be paid critics and forced celebrities love.
Flop hai Zindagi 1.5 * its to bore for me
Its a beautiful movie. I got to watch it yesterday since it released two days early in North America. Alia has acted very well. SRK is effortless. Jahangir’s role is apt for SRK and seems very much like the real life SRK – very intellectual, witty and tasteful. The movie has no dull moments and direction is very persistent. Towards the end I was a little surprised with the script but it was handled very well.
I cannot stop thinking about how beautifully the story unfolds and how much study Gauri and writer must have done on psychology and therapy to have handled Jahangir and his prescriptions as well as they have been handled in the movie. More than 24 hours after watching the movie I can’t stop thinking about the movie and how the end of Alia and SRK’s therapy sessions unfold every page of the Alias’s story ….truly connects all the dots!!
SRK’s role is limited but he is the soul of this movie. Once he makes an appearance, he is repeatedly seen for 5-10 mins until the end.
