De Dana Dhan Movie Review

Akshay Kumar’s much hyped De Dana Dhan released worldwide today and the expectations quite obviously are high. For one, the film reunites the Hera Pheri team of Akshay Kumar – Paresh Rawal – Suniel Shetty and director Priyadarshan. Over the years, Priyadarshan films that I have loved in particular have been Hera Pheri, Hungama and to a certain extent Hulchul. De Dana Dhan promises more – 25 character actors along with a thrilling water-flood scene as its climax.

Story is something, we cannot expect from Priyan’s films. But is it entertaining enough to deserve the price of your tickets? Read on..

Nithin (Akshay Kumar) works for a rich mall-owner (played by Archana Puran Singh) in Singapore. He is in love with Anjali (Katrina Kaif) and with dreams of quitting his slave-job and marrying the love of his life, he is always on a look out for a shortcut to richness. With help from his friend Ram (Suniel Shetty), the two hatch a plan to kidnap his owner’s Dog! What follows is utter chaos filled with innumerable misunderstandings and confusions.

De Dana Dhan Review

The negatives first, for a change

  • The fact that Paresh Rawal and some of the other character actors have more screen-time than Akshay Kumar is simply unacceptable. Most parts of the second half Akki is locked in the wardrobe, which would be terribly disappointing for Akki fans and the roar when he is finally released, proves just that.
  • Katrina Kaif has nothing to do. No role, few dialogues and the sizzling Gale Lag Ja dance number has been kept away as a bonus by director Priyadarshan for the post-weekend shows. Again, unacceptable.
  • For a movie hyped as the return of the Hera Pheri team – Paresh Rawal has absolutely no interaction with neither Suniel Shetty nor Akshay Kumar. Unacceptable, disappointing and with a hint of exaggeration cruel!
  • The runtime is close to 3 hours and the director has wasted loads of time in introducing all the 20 odd characters. With each having multiple misunderstandings with two of the other characters, the movies gets too monotonous in the second half.
  • While you expect non-stop entertainment, the funny scenes are few and far in between. The whole marriage angle in the second half and the addition of several new characters, ruins what should have been a thoroughly entertaining ride had the director just stuck to the Akshay – Suniel storyline.
  • The dialogues are strictly average. Some of them work, most don’t.
  • The climax which refreshes memories of the Tsumani hit resorts, looks realistic. But what’s the whole point of the scene, to evoke laughter? Sorry it didn’t.
  • What’s with the abrupt end? None of misunderstandings were cleared. Are we expecting too much here? Wasn’t it Akshay who claimed ‘Take your brains to theaters’ — After watching the film, would love to know exactly why.. ?

Its disappointing, disturbing and not one bit funny anymore! Its hard to see an actor, who you have grown to love over the years, as a part of such flicks.

Positives

  • About two scenes involving Akshay Kumar and Suniel Shetty in the first half are funny.
  • When Akshay is released from the cupboard. The scene that follows is hilarious.
  • Those inhaling of chloroform scenes were funny too and performed well by all the actors involved.
  • Katrina looks stunning and so does Neha Dhupia, who deserves credit for putting up the best show amongst the females.
  • Johnny Lever is fantastic.

Other performances

  • Archana Puran Singh – Too Loud and over the top.
  • Paresh Rawal has the meatiest role. He excels in certain scenes, but average in others.
  • Suniel Shetty doesn’t have much to do in the second half, but does well in the first.
  • Asrani as Mamu is good.
  • Sameera Reddy is purely for eye candy.
  • Rajpal Yadav is very good.
  • Manoj Joshi is loud but effective.
  • Chunky Pandey is okay.
  • Aditi Govitrikar currently locked in the Bigg Boss house looks gorgeous.
  • Shakti Kapoor was irritating.

Overall, De Dana Dhan isn’t close to being as good as Priyadarshan’s ‘H Series’ (read Hera Pheri, Hungama, Hulchul) of classics. Although this review wouldn’t make much of a difference to die hard Akshay fans, it is they who will be most disappointed.

Rating: ★½☆☆☆

Other comments – Not much to say really. It was better than the other two comedies of Akshay Kumar this year and probably deserves half a star more, if not a full one. But with Akshay missing in the second half, Katrina making short appearances every 20 mins and the lack of interaction between the Hera Pheri gang.. makes it one of the bigger disappointments of the year.

Let the bashing begin..!

  • MEGHA– think u r a journalist… u got a gud writing hand.. most of ur Eg r very gud… but one thing which i found in ur comments (present and past) , comedy s not ur cup of tea. so wy watch dem. rt….;)

have seen ur comments durin APKGK also, tellin tat movie s flop, nonsense etc.. but wheneva u have commented such things d movie became a superhit….:) so v al dont mind ur comments.. let DDD be a superhit….;)

Akshay `ll do his swades, ghajini, TZP etc wen some ppl stop bashin him for wateva he does..;) so d day u stop thrashin akshay movies , U `ll get to c al tat….:)
Wen an actor is not accepted in any role other than comedy wat else he s supposed to do yaar…:)

  • Sudeep– according to rumours dey have already signed a deal. team owners r business minded ppl u see..
but accordin to some its not gud bcoz cricket s gud to be enjoyed in d stadium n not in multiplex…;)

This yr bcoz of multiplex strike ppl delayed al their movies n ended up releasin so many movies together after tat.. which made them suffer. next yr again none `ll release d movies for those 45days n same problem `ll repeat.. THATs s reason Kites s being postponed….

  • Venus has sold the movie for 30crs(this includes sattelite and home vidoe rights) to baba arts…
Baba arts has sold theatrical rights to other sub distributors per territory basis…
Say on conservative basis he sells the rights for say 15crs to its subdistributors and gets 15-18crs for satelite and 4-5 crs for home video rights…This is the bare minimum he will be getting as comedy movies get good price…
So he will be making atleast a profit of 4 crs(15+15+4-30) to 8 crs (15+18+5) plus he will be getting the overflows of profits also from subdistributors…

where as if movie does a business of 40 crs net then distributors get a share of around 20 crs and they will also be making profits. against a price of 15crs they have paid..

    Now the producers…

    From Baba Arts-30 crs
    Overseas rights-15crs
    Music sales-2crs
    Value added services(Mobile ringtone+picture download)-2crs
    DTH-5crs
    Total-54 crs
Now if you take budget to be 45 crs(20 crs share for akshay) then also venus people will make a profit of 9 crs….
Mind you these are very conservative figures still everyone’s earning is quite good..

See this is actually an example of smart pricing where everyone associated gets benefitted…
I totally agree with Taran Adarsh when he says “Its price that fails and not the Movie”

  • From above…I elaborate how DDD will be a clean hit, even if it does a net business of 40 crs

Budget-I agree if akshay charges 20 crs it should be around 45crs…
But in this case he has co-produced the film and say for 20 crs he is getting 40% of total revenue generated…

  • Amish:Same here!!!!!He is doing awsome job…..

All akshay hater….Look ,this movie is going to be hit!!!!!!Saying bla n bla about him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!This will break akshay 2 flop,1 abv avg and 1 avg record!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • to INDICINE …i know that there is nio meaning in writing this to YOU PPL ..the so called geniuses in criticizing, isn’t it?again i’m remonding you dont put fake reviews over here..you dont know akshaykumar’s fame and honour in this country and abraoad..each of his movie whether good or bad rating is 1.5 why?if you ppl are so good in reviewing and making good movies try it out for youself and show???if you do thnat i bet i’ll sshave my head!!!!bcos you cant do that..ichallenge you ppl…respect others work, ability, dignity, calibre, honour and atlest understand the pain behind creating movies..its not easy just as you sit and watch and take the stinking pen and crib some stupidity..a 3rd grade student can do that..and againreminding you….you have 17 more movies of akshay to review o!!!be redy with your 1.5 rating in the next 3 years…do that again and agaun and again and again and again and again….and i’ll wait here with my fellow freinds to expose your negativities…take my word.

  • there is no meaning in deleting my comments over here..always truth hurts!!!isnt it?when you make a movie of you r own then you wull undrestand..already i hav send an email pointing the reviews over here to akshaykumar’s manager MANISH JHA AND HIS TEAM ,just wait for two more days we’ll se wat happens..i’m not commentong anymore tou ppl…but to MEGHA i hav to see her personally!!!

  • Hey Guys did u hear this news…Sharukh khan is all set to build a stadium in Dubai…

The actor is all set to come up with a cricket stadium in Dubai.

SRK apparently plans to open a cricketing stadium in Dubai. He has some land in Dubai and he’s planning to develop that into a huge stadium soon. He is believed to be teaming up with some UAE based developers.

when operational, the ground will have all the facilities to host international cricket matches and even other global sporting events. SRK is a dearly loved Indian star in the country and this is his way of giving it back to them. He will frequent the place more often than what he used to. The place might also become a venue for his prog. at Dubai..

  • It’s true that full credit for the success of DDD should go to Priyadarshan only…Akki did nice..but it would not matter..if instead of Akki somebody else was there…Like Malamal weekly..no big stars but a hit movie..

That’s why Akki needs to take some different types of role where he can show his talent….

Like Yodha Akbar nobody can’t imagine anybody else except Hritik..
Though Swadesh was a flop but everybody praised sharukh for his extremelygd performance..
Amir does experiment all the time..
Even Ranbir also shows..his guts..to take a nonglamorous role in Rocket Sing..
So Akki also needs to go for acting oriented role…
He should take a chance atleast

  • Till date Akki was extremely..gd in Tashan…and critics praised him as well..He tried in Tasbeer..but it was not up to the mark… In Aitraj Priyanka was the best..waqt was his average performance..

Akii is an entertainer…but he should do somthing different…he should take some challenge…
Like Amir is playing a 22 yrs old character in 3Idiots..that’s a challenge yaar…he has guts to take that offer at the age of 44..that is acting…Amitabh is doing in pa…this glamorous world is very competitive …here a actor needs..to get box office collection plus some quality works ..so that people ll remember him for the role..otherwise everybody ll forget …as they ll thrash him out as they did with Govinda..

  • I wonder when Akshay is gonna learn….dont get me wrong but i am huge fan of akshay…dissappointing year from akki…..looking forward for Action replay :)

DE DANA DAN is going from strength to strength. While the film had an average of 75% start on Friday [good], it was approx. 95% to 100% at practically all screens on Saturday [Eid holiday]. In fact, DDD had one of the biggest Saturdays ever. Sunday too was at par with Saturday, which clearly indicates that the film has been accepted in a big way by the audiences.

  • Amish:

  • @brishti : the problem is nobody offers AKkI seriosu or meaningful roles. he approached Ashutosh Gowarikar but he hasnt looked to sign him so far . Even Priyadarshan is making a film on AIDS but he is not Taking AKKI rather He has taken Aamir. th eproblem is AKKI has proved that he has the versatility with movies like Sangharsh, Khakee, Dhadkan,Waqt, AAn and many more that he can fit in any role but ppl dont take him for such roles . what can he do ???
infact i have heard that he’ll be making a Kogamata Maru – a movie based on real life incident but with his busy schedule – dont knw when it will start.

:Saju day: hey psychopath, great job man. keep on putting such commenst it wont affect DDD. THe more u Say bad about DDD , the higher will be its Achievement . Guru ka dialogue. got it . But Veer will just recover its money wont be a hit . take my words

  • 22.3 Crore Weekend for De Dana Dan

De Dana Dan enjoyed excellent weekend of 22.3 crore. Movie surprised each and everyone from trade circle to general moviegoers because of its exceptional run at box-office over weekend. Before release, first weekend prediction was in range of 17-18 Crore, But 22.3 Crore is just huge acceleration from general predictions. However Monday saw the drop in morning shows, but excellent weekend collections ensures bountiful first week. If movie does Good in subsequent weeks, it can earn 34+ Crore in first week and 60+ Crore lifetime, and if it does OK to BAD from now on, it can earn up to 30 Crore in first week and will wrap under 45 Crore. Let’s hope for best and we wish an excellent run of movie.

Weekend Breakup (These are refined figure after getting more data) :
