De Dana Dhan Movie Review

Akshay Kumar’s much hyped De Dana Dhan released worldwide today and the expectations quite obviously are high. For one, the film reunites the Hera Pheri team of Akshay Kumar – Paresh Rawal – Suniel Shetty and director Priyadarshan. Over the years, Priyadarshan films that I have loved in particular have been Hera Pheri, Hungama and to a certain extent Hulchul. De Dana Dhan promises more – 25 character actors along with a thrilling water-flood scene as its climax.

Story is something, we cannot expect from Priyan’s films. But is it entertaining enough to deserve the price of your tickets? Read on..

Nithin (Akshay Kumar) works for a rich mall-owner (played by Archana Puran Singh) in Singapore. He is in love with Anjali (Katrina Kaif) and with dreams of quitting his slave-job and marrying the love of his life, he is always on a look out for a shortcut to richness. With help from his friend Ram (Suniel Shetty), the two hatch a plan to kidnap his owner’s Dog! What follows is utter chaos filled with innumerable misunderstandings and confusions.

De Dana Dhan Review

The negatives first, for a change

  • The fact that Paresh Rawal and some of the other character actors have more screen-time than Akshay Kumar is simply unacceptable. Most parts of the second half Akki is locked in the wardrobe, which would be terribly disappointing for Akki fans and the roar when he is finally released, proves just that.
  • Katrina Kaif has nothing to do. No role, few dialogues and the sizzling Gale Lag Ja dance number has been kept away as a bonus by director Priyadarshan for the post-weekend shows. Again, unacceptable.
  • For a movie hyped as the return of the Hera Pheri team – Paresh Rawal has absolutely no interaction with neither Suniel Shetty nor Akshay Kumar. Unacceptable, disappointing and with a hint of exaggeration cruel!
  • The runtime is close to 3 hours and the director has wasted loads of time in introducing all the 20 odd characters. With each having multiple misunderstandings with two of the other characters, the movies gets too monotonous in the second half.
  • While you expect non-stop entertainment, the funny scenes are few and far in between. The whole marriage angle in the second half and the addition of several new characters, ruins what should have been a thoroughly entertaining ride had the director just stuck to the Akshay – Suniel storyline.
  • The dialogues are strictly average. Some of them work, most don’t.
  • The climax which refreshes memories of the Tsumani hit resorts, looks realistic. But what’s the whole point of the scene, to evoke laughter? Sorry it didn’t.
  • What’s with the abrupt end? None of misunderstandings were cleared. Are we expecting too much here? Wasn’t it Akshay who claimed ‘Take your brains to theaters’ — After watching the film, would love to know exactly why.. ?

Its disappointing, disturbing and not one bit funny anymore! Its hard to see an actor, who you have grown to love over the years, as a part of such flicks.

Positives

  • About two scenes involving Akshay Kumar and Suniel Shetty in the first half are funny.
  • When Akshay is released from the cupboard. The scene that follows is hilarious.
  • Those inhaling of chloroform scenes were funny too and performed well by all the actors involved.
  • Katrina looks stunning and so does Neha Dhupia, who deserves credit for putting up the best show amongst the females.
  • Johnny Lever is fantastic.

Other performances

  • Archana Puran Singh – Too Loud and over the top.
  • Paresh Rawal has the meatiest role. He excels in certain scenes, but average in others.
  • Suniel Shetty doesn’t have much to do in the second half, but does well in the first.
  • Asrani as Mamu is good.
  • Sameera Reddy is purely for eye candy.
  • Rajpal Yadav is very good.
  • Manoj Joshi is loud but effective.
  • Chunky Pandey is okay.
  • Aditi Govitrikar currently locked in the Bigg Boss house looks gorgeous.
  • Shakti Kapoor was irritating.

Overall, De Dana Dhan isn’t close to being as good as Priyadarshan’s ‘H Series’ (read Hera Pheri, Hungama, Hulchul) of classics. Although this review wouldn’t make much of a difference to die hard Akshay fans, it is they who will be most disappointed.

Rating: ★½☆☆☆

Other comments – Not much to say really. It was better than the other two comedies of Akshay Kumar this year and probably deserves half a star more, if not a full one. But with Akshay missing in the second half, Katrina making short appearances every 20 mins and the lack of interaction between the Hera Pheri gang.. makes it one of the bigger disappointments of the year.

Let the bashing begin..!

De Dana scored very well in International markets. It was after a long time that a film did well overseas. The first weekend business was a healthy 9.50 crore from all markets. The business from major markets is as follows. The film should easily cross the 20 crore mark.

    United Kingdom – £308,029 (2.36 crore)
    North America – $577,381 (2.68 crore)
    UAE – $595,000 (4 Days) (2.76 crore)

Kurbaan takes its 10 day business to around 9 crore. The film will finish around the 11 crore mark. FLOP

  • De Dana Dhan Steady On Monday

    Tuesday 1st December 2009 10.30 IST

    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

De Dana Dhan was steady on Monday thanks to very strong single screen business. Business in single screens at some centres in the North was even better than Friday while other single screens were similar or showed minimal drops. Multiplexes dropped in the 40-60% range compared to Friday depending on location. Multiplexes outside metroes were better while metro multiplexes showed larger falls.

Overall business on Monday was around 3.50 crore nett taking the four day business of De Dana Dhan to around 26.50 crore nett. The next three days should be able to add another 8-9 crore nett which would enable the film to have a first week total in the 35 crore nett region. The second weekend will tell whether the film can do hit business.

  • Hey guys do u hear this ..Wasim Akram to play a role in Akshyay’s Patiala House..Wasim is allset to play a role of a coach of Akshyay’s cricket team in Patiala house..And the entire shot ll be taken at London..
So thumbs up for Patiala House

  • It’s bonus time: Akshay-Katrina rain song back in De Dana Dan

The inevitable has happened. Owing to popular demand, ‘Gale Lag Ja’ – the rain song and dance number featuring the lead pair of Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif – has been added to the film’s narrative.

Though this much hyped song had created quite some buzz en route to the release of De Dana Dan, it was chopped off from the final copy of the print since it was adding to the film’s length. However, the makers of De Dana Dan were open to the idea of incorporating the song as an added bonus if audiences demanded so and the film worked at the box office. With weekend collections being quite strong worldwide, the final call was taken around bringing back the song in the narrative.

Confirms Ratan Jain, producer of De Dana Dan, “We were clear that the song would be added only if the film did well at the box office. There was no point doing that if (God forbid) people wouldn’t have been going into theatres. Now that the weekend collections are out, we know that there would be repeat audiences for the film. For them, it would be another incentive to watch the film again while for the first timers, it’s an added bonus.”

Since the film’s running length is a little less than 3 hours already, would the incorporation of song be of any further impact?

“No”, says Jain, “The length of De Dana Dan is still the same. To compensate for those 4-5 minutes of the added song, we have edited an equal duration of a few scenes from the film.”

‘Gale Lag Ja’ would now appear in the first half of the film at the point when Akshay calls Katrina to the hotel in order to share the kidnapping plan and then run away with the ransom amount.

Meanwhile, Ratan Jain is ecstatic with the kind of collections that the film is showing with every passing day.

“Saturday and Sunday were far better than Friday while Monday was more or less similar to Friday, which is superb”, he says, “Normally, films fall quite rapidly on Monday but we have stayed on very stable grounds. The collections are superb overseas as well, whether in UK, Gulf or elsewhere. In India, we have seen Rs. 23 crores coming in just from the weekend which is superb. All our distributors are very happy and we are all set for a bountiful first week.”

  • I was away for a week on Eid holiday, so I didn’t hv time to use the internet or check out the website or read reviews & comments.. so here I’m.. back, and I still didn’t read the comments on this page, but I read Indicine Team’s review.

As I expected.. it’s in the category of Hera Pheri, Welcme, Golmaal, etc.. and this movie is not for me for sure.

  • kya yaar itna accha plot pasand naheen aya??? o.k well do the entire thing based in ahospital..some emotions will also be added southindian style adapted from priyas new flick watts is name kaanchivarm or better still well do the entire movie in a saree store..now happy.. super duper 180 crore business this and well request priya to give all of you some role in it ..even if its sweeeper /dancer /sidekick..cheers

  • About one thing all ll be agreed that these torrents, camp print dvd,cds r illegal..because of these films r facing a huge loss every year..so as a educated citizen we should not promote those illegal things..and watching those..or buying those r one sort of crime even..
And DDD is already tagged that u have to leave ur brain outside..so should not expect a gd story..anything like that from that movie..

And movie making is also very tough yaar..as we know (through tv we watch sometimes)is very hard to deal with everything..sply for a director it’s a very tough job..

And Priyadarshan..did a fantastic job..he had to deal with so many characters..

  • i Saw DDD today morning 11:45 show and it was around 40-45% full with all applauding the movie.
First half was OK but Second Half Was Outstanding , just brilliant

  • The Climax was Nice. Especially Rajpal yadav holding the glass tray . i hope Amish and Nauman u wd have noticed that it was the best part about the climax

  • :Megha: Nice Story . now go to producers and make it . then we’ll see how funny it is and will surely compare it witt the movies u called boring movies(APKGK and DDD). then u’ll get to see that by writing this comment how u have a made a fool of urself becoz movie making is not easy. just try and make it will surely try to watch what u make.
Writing such a story is easy but making it into a laugh riot is again not ur cup of tea

  • Amish n Sudeep:

anyways best part was rajpal yadav carrying glass tray during the flood like situation

  • ISSUED FOR PUBLIC AWARENESS!

Wheneva some other actors movie bcomes a hit or BB these few pathetic illetrate maniac psychotic salman fans start commentin on tat page…

It s mainly bcoz they r insecure and a gut feelin tat salman s not a superstarr nw..

so they try their best to spread negative comments to bring down an actors star power but in d mean time dey just increase tat actors star status and bring salmans status down….

I dont consider salman as bad but his few pathetic fans r worst!!

Am sure Saju s in his final stage of depression and not on any medication..;) High chances of suicidal tendency if Veer becomes a Flop.. pls take care of this person.,..!!!
