Understanding Box Office India: Trends, Terms and Predictions

We have been receiving a lot of questions in the last couple of days. Terms like trend, net collections, worldwide gross, distributors share is not only difficult to understand, but confusing at times.

In this article, we try and explain some of these terms in simple words to give our readers a better idea on how it all works and how we use ‘trends’ to make predictions.

Some trade terms:

  • Net Collections: Unless mentioned, all collections of films that you see on this website are ’net collections’ i.e all-India collections minus entertainment tax. E.g: In Mumbai (where the entertainment tax is 45%), for a ticket costing Rs 200, about Rs 62 goes towards as entertainment tax and your contribution to the net collection will be Rs 138.
  • Gross Collections: All-India collections including entertainment tax i.e if you pay Rs 100 for a ticket, the entire sum of Rs 100 is gross collections. Overseas collections are in gross and we also use gross collections to calculate worldwide total of films.
  • Distributor’s Share: This is easily the most misunderstood term. A lot of people think that the entire collection of films goes to the producer or distributor. Just because a film has joined the 100 crore club, it does not mean all that money is going to the producer. A share of the net collections goes to the producer / distributor and the other to the exhibitor (theatre owner). The percentage of share varies, depending on where the film is performing (share is higher at single-screens or fixed rentals for films that run well). The share from multiplex business is highest in Week 1, drops in Week 2 and goes further down in Week 3. For easier understanding, it can be assumed that the collections that come to the distributor is about 50% of the net collections. E.g, if a film collects 100 crore at the box office, the distributor gets about Rs 50 crore. There is more to it like commission, but we won’t get into it in this article.

So in short, if you pay Rs 100 for your ticket, Rs 40 gets deducted as entertainment tax and out of the remaining 60 rupees, the film’s distributor gets about 30 and the exhibitor (theatre owner) gets 30. These figures do vary.

Trend: It begins on the day after release of the film and the direction in which it goes (growth or drop) decides the trend of a film. Important days that set the trend:

  • Saturday (Day 2): Most films that do well at multiplexes, will show growth (upward trend) on Saturday. This is because Sunday is a holiday and audience in cities prefer to watch late evening / night shows on Saturday. For ‘massy films’ that do well at single-screen like Ghayal Returns, there is usually a drop on Saturday. In short, multiplex films dropping on Saturday is a negative trend, while for single-screen films a drop of 10% is normal.
  • Sunday (Day 3): It’s a holiday and therefore the best day for film business. If business shows a drop on Sunday, it’s a clear sign of negative trend and negative word-of-mouth.
  • Monday Test (Day 4): The first working weekday, which usually falls on Monday, is what we call the ‘Monday test’. Most films that ‘hold or sustain’ well on Monday, go on to do well at the box office. The percentage of drop that is ‘acceptable’ depends on the opening that the film has taken.
  • Tuesday (Day 5): In recent times, Tuesday collections have become as important as Monday. If a film drops by 5-10% from Monday, it’s considered to be a ‘good hold’ or ‘good trend’, but if the drop is in excess of 15%, it could be a sign that the movie is not holding up. Tuesday business can sometimes also be an indication of how well a film will perform in its second weekend.

Since most films release on Friday, the above mentioned days are the most important days. Below we give you examples of different trends:

Excellent Trend: Films that carry this trend are certain to be successful at the box office and emerge as big hits / blockbusters. E.g: Airlift, Neerja, Kapoor & Sons.

  • Friday: 10 crore
  • Saturday: 13 crore
  • Sunday: 16 crore
  • Monday: 8 crore
  • Tuesday: 7.5 croe

Good Trend: Films that show this trend go on to be successful and it also means the audience has liked the film. E.g: Ki and Ka.

  • Friday: 10 crore
  • Saturday: 12 crore
  • Sunday: 14 crore
  • Monday: 6 crore
  • Tuesday: 5.4 crore

Average Trend Example: For such films; marketing, pre-release hype, music etc are very important, because for films that show average trend, the opening is crucial. E.g: Sanam Re.

  • Friday: 10 crore
  • Saturday: 11 crore
  • Sunday: 12 crore
  • Monday: 4.5 crore
  • Tuesday: 4 crore

Negative Trend Example: A drop on Saturday, and Sunday at around the same level (or a little higher) as Friday, is usually a sign of a negative trend. It also means the film has not been liked by the audience. These films show big drops on Monday. E.g: FAN, Fitoor.

  • Friday: 10 crore
  • Saturday: 9 crore
  • Sunday: 10 crore
  • Monday: 3.5 crore
  • Tuesday: 2.75 crore

Extremely Negative Trend: When Saturday and Sunday is lower than Friday, that’s usually the first sign that the film has been rejected. Monday crash becomes almost certain. If a film that falls in this category, fails to take a good opening, they go on to be big disasters at the box office. E.g: Rocky Handsome, Kya Kool Hai Hum 3 and many others.

  • Friday: 10 crore
  • Saturday: 8 crore
  • Sunday: 8 crore
  • Monday: 3 crore or less
  • Tuesday: 2 crore

It’s not as simple as the above figures though, because factors like national holiday, partial holiday, big cricket matches, other films performing well - can all have an impact on the business of films.

After analysing the trend and all the other factors involved, we ‘call’ a film. If the trend is negative / extremely negative and the costs to be recovered are too high, then a film can be declared a flop as early as the first weekend.

IndicineFBO Predictions: Nowhere on the internet will you find a feature as unique as IndicineFBO (first day box office predictions). While we give our first prediction for a film on the day after the theatrical trailer is released, the final prediction is made a day before the release of a film. A lot of research goes into these predictions. Factors like star cast and the success/ failure of their previous release, lead pair, screen count, popularity of songs, response to the trailer / song promos and various other factors are taken into consideration.

IndicineLBO Prediction: This is yet another idea that is unique to Indicine. We give our final lifetime (total) prediction for films two days after its release. Some of our biggest and most accurate predictions are Dilwale (145 crore), Bajirao Mastani (168 crore – it eventually collected 12% more), Bombay Velvet (24 crore), ABCD 2 (102 crore), Tamasha (68 cr) and FAN (95 crore). These predictions are almost entirely based on our understanding of the ‘trend’ which we explained above.

This was my royal birth and entry.

I shall take this world by storm.

  • @ANK don’t even expect coverage for Hrithik Aamir and Ajay. I never seem a sight that hates Ajay and Aamir so much. while 60 cr king and worst actor among the ones you named is their most worshipped. Very sure he pays them money only in indicine you see his news.

  • @ Sunny : Since I was the one who was writing the comment I mentioned actors I would like to know about and my list doesnt include Saif. So if u r interested in Saif articles then u should request Indicine directly.

There are at times news (and not just a movie related news) related to Amir, Ajay and also Hrithik I see at other websites but dont see them here. So overall an increase in articles on Amir, Ajay and also Akshay and Hrithik would make the site more balanced.

I know u hate a particular actor and there is not much I can help about it so wont be responding to any further comment of yours.

  • You gave verdict of Fan already before even 1st week not forgetting Ra one 1st week total was 70 crs less than its budget but you gave it Hit status. Fan is just 40 crs short of its budget. The logic you gave @wazza is very unreal then. Why did you not declare Ra one flop a day before it’s 1st week when sign of crashing started after weekend collections?

  • @indicine: Thanks for the quick correction . I am curious about all India E. Tax rates and the average rate approx . can you do some article on it. Shall be great..

  • @ANK
‘Worst Actor’, ‘Non-Actor’, ‘Joker’, ’60 Cr King’ call them anything but social media lives on them for publicity.
    #BhaagRaeesBhaag

  • @indicine i agree with moviefan77.if a movie collects 200 crores then any number u predict between 180 to 220 becomes accurate becoz it is in the range of 10%.window of 40 crores is too high.
similarly if a movie opens at 30 crores then it covers 27 to 33.so again window of 6 crores is a bit too much.
i think it should b 10% for small movies and 5% for big movies.
rest u guys doing a great job

  • Dear indicine…im from malaysia n being a silence reader of your site to get latest info regarding bollywood… and this is the first time i leave a comment in your site…for your info, my loved for bollywood start when i was still a kid coz i born in a family that loved bollywoood film…make no mistaked…we are not indian or even understand hindi….we loved every good hindi film then…but in malaysia…the craze for bollywood among the malays mostly started after KKHH becomed a blocbuster in malaysia….so , liked it or not, srk was the one who responsible for the bollywood craze on malaysia…n for me..my loved towards srk had started much ealier from his deewana, khabie haa khabie naa…but that does not mean i care less for other actor…i too loved Salman , Amir Khan , Ajay devgan , Saif Ali , akshay kumar, anil kapoor, irfan khan ..
even to the present generation of Ranbir Kapoor, ranveer sing, farhan akhtar…i wish one day , bollywood can produced a 100 m usd film and gived a real fight to hollywood in every aspect….thats i why i dont understand why this fan war….dont u see it will only make your industry backward compare to hollywood….have you ever heard this kind of thing happened in hollywood…or even anyplace else in the word….?..in hollywood , even if you are a fan of brad fitt, u still went to see a film from leonardo ..it the film is good , you praise it but if it bad , then criticsed it…but from the comment that i always read here , most of the time, if you are not fan of that particular actor, you do not watch his film and at the same timed , your badmouth about it…you dont realized that if that particular film failed, it was bollywood that lossed mainly and badly effected, …and lastly, about that box office term…for me it was confusing becoz only in india , you used term liked nett collection, grossed collection, distributar shared..dont you realized in America and other placed, they only announced the box office gross of the movie….they do have entertaiment tax too in America, ..and i never heard any of their box office site declare any film a flop after weekend release..taked example of the recent release batman vs superman ..the budget of that movie including the promotion more than usd 400 million…and the first weekend collection was at usd 160 million..box office mojo never declared that after the weekend ..batman vs superman was a flop …so yes, your standard of deciding how was the bo of hindi was confusing for an outsider liked me…..

  • @ANK oh yeah, I just like to have fun with tht particular actor nd I don’t find him worth to include his name with other top 5

Otherwise he is too low standard actor for me . Before coming to indicine,I wasn’t even Aware tht ajay devgan is also In A list stars league, though I have all knowledge of bollywood.

Only on indicine I like to troll ajay devgan otherwise on social networking sites,I only troll salman & shahrukh, infect every akkian troll only khans. They don’t take hrithik nd ajay as a competition to khiladi kumar.

I have bash hrithik, salman, amir nd srk on indicine many times , i think u haven’t noticed tht. Knucklehead

  • @M.saif, but more craze for Tamil superstar like Rajni, Suriya and Vijay. I know srk famous but Salman Khan and Amir Khan too famous because I know that the fact even my friends malayu crazy for Salman and Amir.
Iku udah duduk Malay sana 5 tahun.
    By the way.. @indicine team… excellent article….!

  • Nice explanation indicine. It’s cool well broken down.

Only that you should have explained more in details EXHIBITORS(theatre owners, pop corn/cold drink sellers) specifically for Joker Kumar fans…

.Remember our argument on q n a when I was questioning u guys why saying “Akshay pleases the exhibitors solely?? ”

Let their fans have an idea of the roles akki movies play on trade market since they are many new readers now. Lol

  • Well done Indicine. Keep it up. I visit your site regularly for the articles on Bollywood and the comments of users.

  • @indicine what about if a producer sold a film to distributor company. How are they going to divide the shares and again about music and setlite right what benefit are they getting are both of them getting. We need a broad explanation on that and more of that if there is something I skip or forget to write

  • @Sunny Akkiholic ::: but during casting of Saif and Akks in keemat, ydl, matk during shooting Saif was staying in 5 star executive suites while Aaks single room. Can you explain why? you can bing goggle or yahoo it to tell us. Hahaha hehehe. Mind you Saif has a better hit ratio than Akshay and even Ajay. Though no where near Sultan Malik bhai!!!!!

  • And just as an example saw an article today that Amir Khan visited hospital to meet Dilip Kumar shb to wish him speedy recovery.

Nice pics were shared with Amir standing by Dilip Kumar shb and his wife Saira Banu. So doesnt necessarily have to be a movie related news and once in a while.

  • @Aisha dear that was hilarious. Can’t stop laughing!!! You have already summarized Akshay box office formula. Indicine are not dumb to make that statement they know why they stressed it in particular. Quantity over quality. His fans came to Fan articles and post nonsense not knowing nothing special in releasing average grosser dominantly like his 4 films a year. All sensible Fans of other actors know that already his movies are made for exhibitors to keep on running while others actors always care about their producers Mr Akshay only thinks of his signing fees and how to make exhibitors run his torturous movies. When was the last time you heard him winning any clash? only with b grade heros like Tushaar and with small girls like Sonam Dolly. Too much fun!!!!!!!!!’!!!!!!!

  • Brilliant job Indicine. May be this is the first time this kind of detailed analysis has been written on any website. This kind of article not only explain the whole process of boxoffice, but also make interested so many people about boxoffice and the bollywood. Because, people love that which they understand. So, thank you. Keep the good work going.

Just one suggestion if you can then please try to avoid promoting your favourite star. Try to be neutral.
