I think following reasons affected Gabbar is Back
1. Marathi superhit movie Time pass 2.
2. IPL season.
3. Nepal earthquake ( northern India slightly affected)
4.Competiton from Piku ( very good word of mouth)
5. Bombay Velvet ( took away a lot of screens)
6. Now Tanu Weds Manu Returns ( carrying super word of mouth)

According to your post, the budget of Gabbar (70 crores) is nearly equal to that of Baby (73 crores). So if Baby is an “above average” with around 97 crores, then how can Gabbar be a Hit with just 85 crores? Either change Gabbar’s verdict to average/above average or change Baby to Hit..
@Nipun, India rights of Gabbar Is Back was sold for 41 crore. Baby was distributed by A.A. Films on commission basis. Theatrical business was just about decent. Also, Gabbar Is Back Satellite rights has fetched excellent price, because the film is much more massy. Film like Baby doesn’t have much value, as far as satellite rights is concerned.
Overall, Gabbar Is Back is a much more profitable film.

gabbar 13 Cr in 3050 Screens.
TWMR 8.7 in 2200 screens .
if we Do it half Then TWMR has collect 4.35 cr in 1100 screens…nd if we multiply 1100 into 3 means 3300 screens nd if we multiply 4.35 into 3 then total collection comes exact 13.5 ..equal to gabbar bt 250 screens R extra of TWMR …
so logically its also proved gabbar is biggest opener .
this is little Rayta failaana logic :P bt I just want to prove dat indicine is little biased against Akki .
why is there a different verdicts on baby and gabbar? both of the films have similar budget and both earned just a little bit more than the budget.
Piku and Tanu weds manu collections are super ! it also tells the story that in Bollywood khans n hritik roshan are the only superstars ! Others doesn’t have the power to generate initial revenues for makers !

Gib made 84 and hit while baby made on similar budget collects10 crore more why is it above average
Gabbar would ended something above 100cr if piku was failed. Gabaar was a good film having great script (though over the top) and fantastic performance of Akshay.
TWMR is undoubtly the best opener this year, though GIB is ahead in terms of collection but you can see on second day it collected more than GIB which is huge.
Biggest hit so far is TWMR followed by piku.
Biggest hit which having young actor in lead- Badlapur
Surprise success- Dum laga k heisha
Underperformer- Baby,GIB (either of one should be 100cr grosser)
Most Profitable actor- Akki with two film success
Most Disappointed actor- Ranbir with Roy and BV
