Akshay Kumar’s Airlift is the first big release of 2016. It’s also the first big clash of the year as Balaji Motion Pictures’ Kya Kool Hai Hum 3 is also scheduled to release on the same day.
The clash is going to be interesting because Airlift is not the sort of film that carries mass-appeal, so business will be limited to multiplexes – where Akshay Kumar films haven’t really opened to high occupancies in recent times. On the other hand, Kya Kool Hai Hum 3 is a sex comedy and comes under a popular franchise. The two films won’t affect each other’s business, nor will there be a shortage of screens.
Airlift Business Economics below:

- Satellite rights: ?19 crore (Akshay Kumar’s fee)
- Recovery from various other rights and branding: ?16 crore

Airlift is already a profitable film for the makers. Akshay hasn’t charged a fee for the film, but has taken the satellite rights and will take a share if the film is profitable.
Airlift has to collect around 67-70 crore in India to recover costs and around $2.5 – 3 million from the overseas markets.

I truly hope that Airlift reaches the audiences and goes on to collect 100cr+. Not an Avid fan of Akshay, yet feel he deserves a 100 cr movie in his kitty. Akshay has always been a dedicated and thorough entertainer!

this kind of movie should reach larger audience. …..they deserve more…..last year 2 movies had footfall of more than 2 cr… nearly 10 movies above 1 cr footfall….but my most favourite 2015 is massan….n which is flop….thats irony of today’s boxoffice era…..my prediction for airlift 90 to 100 cr

This week will see an interesting clash at the box office with Airlift releasing with Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3. Though it should be easy for Airlift as it as far bigger star with Akshay Kumar and if it was an action film then it would be pretty easy but here its the thriller genre and this genre finds it hard at the box office. It always has been as far as Hindi films are concerned and the genre does tend to negate some of the star power as mass circuits under perform..Its not that sex comedies like Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3 have a universal market but they do have loyal following among the youth and this one is a brand with two hit films behind it though both were driven byMumbai circuit. This makes it a tight battle as far as initial is concernedIt would be a shock if Kyaa Kool Hain Hum3 came out with better day one collections as its probably never happened that a small film has bettered a big star film on the opening day. Its not happened in this decade for sure. The screen issue here is not much of a problem as both films don’t need 4000 screens each and can easily do with 4500-5000 between them.This opening clash will definitely be closer than Dilwale v Bajirao Mastani as Dilwale comfortably had a better initial there. If Airlift can take an initial like a Gabbar Is Back or Singh Is Bling then it will come out on top but that looks unlikely given the genre and this opens upthe clash and even gives the smaller film a chance to beat the bigger film.

Hope the movie will be a good hit and kick off the new year in style! Don’t understand why some ppl are still calling this as a patriotic film!. This is based on Air India’s heroic evacuation of more than 1.7 lakh Indian ppl from Kuwait at the time of the Gulf war…don’t go with patriotic film mindset and get disappointed. All the best for team Airlift!
