A. Difficult to answer such questions. Sholay is the most watched movie of all time, footfalls (no of tickets sold) were way higher than DDLJ and 3 Idiots. DDLJ and Sholay released during an era when piracy and internet didn’t exist. The only way to watch a film was in theatres. During DDLJ there were VHS tapes, but piracy wasn’t close to as fast as it is today. While it’s unfair to compare films released during different eras, the current generation would probably pick 3 Idiots over DDLJ and Sholay.
Q. The response to the trailer of ALONE is very positive as compared to other horror movies. Will this help in terms of its collections?
A. Trailer, star cast and songs are three of the most important factors for Indian audiences. When a trailer gets a good response, the opening will definitely get a boost. Bipasha Basu’s Alone is expected to take a good opening at mass centres.
It’s undoubtedly Sholay, both Sholay and DDLJ have reached to cult status, they will be watched by upcoming generation until god knows for how long, most of us have watched them despite the fact Sholay was released nearly 4 decades ago! 3 Idiots will also follow same path, it will be watched by many generations to come. Movies like those 3 cannot be forgotten.

2nd thing all are from.different genre,sholay is all about friendship and revenge.DDLJ is a purest eternal love story.3i is a story of 3 struggling students with some overrated manipulation in story.so basically genrewise it’s uncomaparable but greatness wise plagiarised 3i couldn’t comparable with LEGEND MOVIES like SHOLAY and DDLJ.

DDLJ anytime..It was the movie that can be easily connected to old and new generation….DDLJ most loved movie of bollywood…And this movie made srk an unreachable person…Whenever someone spend more time infront of mirroe,people say “chal bus kar itna aya tou sharukh khan”,when a boys try for a girl people say “bus kar bara ban raha ha sharukh khan”..infact this movie made srk everyone’s star even non cinema lovers..

Ddlj is the most loved of all time . Recently conducted poll for most loved movie of indian cinema proves that . Second will be sholay.
Hahk and Mpk are far behind in terms of popularity. Ddlj and sholay are classics.

It’s Sholay without any doubt closely followed by DDLJ.
What goes into the credit of Sholay is, when the movie released, Indian audiences were not all that advanced, to go and watch every movie into theatre plus lots of orthodoxy was there at the time of its release. Still it was a huge success because of its repeat value. The same audiences watched it again and again, which is enough to prove how much they loved it. Also, the entire movie was totally shot in India that too in rural India. It doesn’t have an NRI touch(what DDLJ had) plus it doesn’t have such youth oriented script (what 3 idiots had) so that youths will lined up to watch it.
With all these adverse conditions if it worked, the one and only reason behind that is, the compact script of Sholay, the impressive acting of all the star cast and the fantabulous direction.
There were limited audiences at that time but they watched it again and again increasing the footfall of the movie.
For me, Sholay is arguably the most loved movie of Indian cinema and no other movie can match the standards what Sholay has set.
Without any doubt DDLJ then Sholey then 3 idiots
