Top 5 Actors in Bollywood – Box office battle
There has been a lot of discussion in the comments section as to who the Top 5 actors in Bollywood are at the moment. Most in the Singh Is King Box office collection topic were of the opinion that Akshay Kumar post Singh is King has gone past Shahrukh Khan as the King of Bollywood.
So we decided to do some research on the Top 5 actors in Bollywood and their last 5 movies. The actors included in the battle are Shahrukh Khan, Akshay Kumar, Hrithik Roshan, Aamir Khan and Salman Khan.
The results were quite unexpected. A few things before we give you the numbers.
Some points to remember are, actors with more releases in recent times (Post 2006) have an advantage over actors whose movies released in say 2003. That is because of the mutliplexes that have come up all over the country and also the increase in the number of prints.
So Akshay Kumar has a much bigger advantage over Aamir Khan as Aamir’s 5th movie Dil Chahta Hai released in 2001, when there were hardly any multiplexes. Also dont forget the inflation!
Here are the number.
5. Salman Khan – Salman Khan is at Number 5. We havent taken God Tussi Great Ho into count as it has just released last week and its final gross is awaited. He mainly suffers because of Marigold, as it did less than 1 crore of business in India! Salman has just one Blockbuster i.e Partner.
- Jaan-E-Mann (2006) – 27 crores – Flop
- Babul (2006) – 17 crores – Flop
- Saalam-e-Ishq (2007) – 24 crores – Flop
- Partner (2007) – 62 crores – Blockbuster
- Marigold (2007) – 1 crore – Disaster
Total – 131 crores
Average – 26.2 crores per movie.
4. Aamir Khan – Aamir Khan although at a huge disadvantage is at Number 4. Imagine if Dil Chahta Hai had released today? It would have grossed atleast a minimum of 50 crores at the box office. Still since his come back the perfectionist has 2 Superhits and 1 Blockbuster to his credit.
- Dil Chahta Hai (2001) – 16 crores – Hit
- Mangal Pandey (2005) – 29 crores – Average
- Rang De Basanti (2006) – 51 crores – Super Hit
- Fanaa (2006) – 53 crores – Super Hit
- Taare Zameen Par (2007) – 61 crores – Blockbuster
Total – 210 crores
Average – 42 crores per movie.
3. Shahrukh Khan – Has been affected big time due to the failure of Paheli. It didnt even get a face saving opening at the box-office and did just 13 crores. Rest of his movies have done well. KANK and Don bearly managed to go on to be hits. Chak De and Om Shanti Om were blockbusters.
- Paheli (2005) – 13 crores – Flop
- Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna (2006) – 46 crores – Above Average to Hit
- Don (2006) – 50 crores – Hit
- Chak De India (2007) – 64 crores – Blockbuster
- Om Shanti Om (2007) – 87 crores – Blockbuster
Total – 260 crores
Average – 52 crores per movie.
2. Akshay Kumar – Now this was a real toughie. But we decided to push Akshay Kumar down to second due to several reasons. He is the only star to not have a single solo ‘Blockbuster’ to his credit (Welcome was a multistarrer with Anil Kapoor, Paresh Rawal and Nan Patekar). Although we have included Singh Is King, it has not completed its complete run at the boxoffice. We had to predict the total nett gross of Singh Is Kinng to 72 crores (44 crores in week one is confirmed + 18 crores in week 2 is also confirmed + 6 crores in week 3 and about 4 crores in the rest of the weeks is a prediction). The other reason for placing him at second is he is the only actor who has the advantage of every movie releasing Post – 2006. No release in the Pre multiplex era of India Cinema.
- Heyy Babyy (2007) – 52 crores – Super hit
- Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007) – 54 crores – Super hit
- Welcome (2007) – 76 crores – Blockbuster (Multistarrer)
- Tashan (2008) – 31 crores – Flop
- Singh Is King (2008) – 72 crores – Hit to Super hit
Total – 285 crores
Average – 57 crores per movie.
1. Hrithik Roshan – By far the youngest actor in the list, Hrithik Roshan by pure box office numbers of India, tops although by a very close margin. 2 solo blockbusters (KMG, Krrish), 1 multi star Blockbuster (Dhoom 2) and 1 Super hit (Jodha Akbar). His only failure in the last 4 years has been Lakshya which did average business at the boxoffice. A great comeback after about 6 failures in a row after Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai.
Hrithik also has two movies pre 2006 which is a disadvantage.
- Koi Mil Gaya (2003) – 44 crores – Super Hit
- Lakshya (2004) – 23 crores – Average
- Krrish (2006) – 66 crores – Blockbuster
- Dhoom 2 (2006) – 86 crores – Blockbuster
- Jodhaa Akbar (2008) – 63 crores – Super Hit
Total – 282 crores
Average – 56.4 crores per movie.
The whole list might change when Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and Chandni Chowk To China release in December. SRK could make it to the top if Rab Ne works big time. How Chandni Chowk fares will also be interesting. Hrithik’s kites releases in the summer of 2009 and there is news that it could be sold for 100 crores if not more. Aamir Khan’s Ghajini too releases this year end and is expected to create boxoffice history.
We will post an update here after all the 3 movies; Rab Ne, Chandni Chowk and Ghajini release.
Note – These figures are only of how the movies fared at the Indian Box-office. Shahrukh Khan is the undisputed king of the overseas box-office. Akshay Kumar and Hrithik Roshan come a close second and third.
Lets discuss below, if you dont agree with the article please post a comment on why. Thank you for reading.

WHO EVER COMPARING AKSHAY WITH OTHER ACTORS TO THOSE I AM TELLING,KHILADI IS ALWAYS KHILADI
DONT COMPARE AKSHAY WITH OTHER ACTORS EVERY ACTOR HAVING HIS OWN TALENT BUT AKKI IS HAVING
EXTRAORDINARY TALENT(TALENT IN COMEDY ROLES,ROMANTIC ROLES,DRAMATIC ROLES)WHICH ACTOR IS HAVING ALL THIS TALENT TOTALLY AKKI IS NO.1
SYED: (September 9, 2008 at 8:50 am)
FATHIYA,PLZ DONT COMPARE AKKI WITH SAIF ALI KHAN
AKKI IS SUPERSTAR, SAIF IS DABBASTAR
AKKI IS KHILADI, SAIF IS ANARI
AKKI IS MARRIED,SAIF DIVORCED AMRITA AND BROKE THE RELATION B/W KAREENA AND SHAHID
AKKI KNOWS THE ACTING BUT SAIF KNOWS ONLY WAW,WAW
AKKI CAME TO BOLLYWOOD THROUGH HIS TALENT WHILE SAIF CAME THROUGH HIS FAMILY BACKGROUND

Syed: When Saif started acting in bollywood, he was just a good looking actor, but never did some good movies or good roles, but he proved himself as a good actor when he did Dil Chata Hai, and everyone liked him, now he developed and he is one of the best actors in bollywood.
When I said: If I compare him with Akshay, I really find Saif is better in acting, facial expression in the roles which he playes, even his voice, in the past he had a bad voice, now he got a matured and warm. And let us all leave Actor’s personal lives aside, because we can’t judge them and we don’t know exactly what went wrong in their relationships with each other and media is unreliable source for these kind of news as the actors never reveal 100% of all the truth about their relationship ( they hide some facts for themselves which is sometimes too private to talk about) so let’s only talk about their performance and their movies, that’s all.
And Syed: what’s the meaning of the word (Anari) does it mean coward or weak?
I got a question here, if someone can answer: why do u pronounce “r” ad “d” u say “Darkan” and u write it “dadkan” u say :jori” but write it “jodi”

After reading the comments by Dr. RC Patel, Punjabi Sher and Fathiya…
Here are my views….
We shud consider both acting and entertainment when we decide upon whoz the best…
Dr RC Patel if u consider Acting alone i think ur list is no where close to Actors like Naseeridin Shah, Anupam Kher, Irrfan Khan and Mr Bachan. How many actors can pull off a movie like Agneepath, even take Khakee as eg.
I am not writing against u but u also mentioned the casanova image i guess D:2 kiss shud answer u
I agree Hritik is a good actor but Akshay hasnt done only comic movies plz watch Jaanwar, Sangharsh
Can u imagine Hritik in a comic role, y do u think he hasnt done a comic flick yet (dont tel me nobody approched) its just that he knows he cannot carry a comedy role….
SRk doenot do many Action movies bcoz he knows he cannot carry it off…
Aamir is a perfectionist does 1 movie in say 1.5yrs if u r this selective u shud have a solid bank balance
Now coming bac to Akshay giving 3-4 movies a yr and pulling it off most of the occasion is not a easy job…
Akshay hasn’t had a oppourtunity to do movies like Jodha Akbar, or Swades or Lagaan.
may be he will also become selective n will show the acting skills mentioned by u.
“It is simple u can be chossy only if ur future is already secured.” Anywayz i thnk all u plp will find somthing inhim wen Nagesh Kukunoor directed 8/10 in on the floors…

Aryan: somtimes people find a movie is so good, but others find it a crap, not interesting: I didn’t like Agneepath for Bigb, and Khakee!! I didn’t like this movie too, it wasn’t a good movie and Aishwariya in a negative role! the director selected a wrong actress for the role and nothing was good about this movie which surprised me after watching it and kept on asking myself: why people liked this one and it won at the box office?!
Some people, while defending Akshay, mentioned his movie “Aankein” I saw this movie only a few days ago and also wasn’t so good, except Akshay’s acting was funny in one song in the movie, and comparing Aankein which was about a bank robbery with “Kaante”, Kantee was a much better movie in direction, I liked Kantee.
I’d love to see Akshay Kumar in a very strong role, playing the main role in a big big action/romatic movie and so far, he didn’t do such a role.

I can understand Fathiya, u like Romantci movies or shud i say movies which has love factor…and which has lot of style, i feel u must have loved D:2 and DON(SRK)nothing wrong in that aftral its ur wish n ur money. The only thing i felt a bit bad was some dont consider Akshay even in top10. i have observed this guy has never got his due. take out akki from bhool bhulaiya, SIK, end product is a big zero.
SIK doesnot have a good script it has made big bucks only bcoz of this guy…
he makes oridinary scripts work…
my point is he may not be No.1 yet but definetely a complete Actor.
Waqt i hoped u watched it wat was wrong wit his acting if u had hritik or SRK these gys wud have definetely got a award for it
SRK got it for Chak de to me SRK reel time was hardly say 30-40 mins mays be but the script was grt8 thats all..
krrish: (September 9, 2008 at 5:39 pm)
my top five actors are:
1Akshay KING Kumer
2)srk
3)aamir khan
4)hrithik roshan
5)salman khan
and why dont you guys gave major consideration to namastey london as it wasnt a multistarrer movie??
Fathiya: (September 9, 2008 at 9:20 pm)
Aryan: First of all, to say to u: I like your name, because it’s Shahrukh’s son’s name, Aryan, what’s the meaning of Aryan?
About Akshay.. why r u sorry for Akshay that he didn’t win any award during the past years.. he got the biggest award this year ( people’s love and respect), that’s the best award for any actor, to collect fans, and nothing is better than that, and if 80% of Indian people love Akshay more than Shahrukh, Aamir, Hrithik, then he is the real king, king of their heart, and he got a special award this year during one of the award functions, I think it was IIFA for his 4 hit movies.
I consider Akshay & Saif, both r very good actors now, and ranking them, is a bit difficult ( I consider Shahrukh & Hrithik, both as number one, and can’t keep anyone of them at no. 2)and myquestion is: Who decide for all this in Bollywood? The judges of bollywood or the audiences? And based on what? By collecting vocies, people votefor them on websites, or there will be a specific function and then they would select the top 5 actors.
Aryan: I didn’t like Don2, neither the original nor the remake, and I think Don is copied from a movie which I saw last night on a dvd called “The Assignment”, based on a true story, similar story.
About Shahrukh winning the award for best actor, for Chakde India, yes, his role was a part of the movie ’cause there were a team of grils working in the movie but Shahrukh did a great work in those minutes in the movie, his acting was so good as well as his look in the movie, looked decent ( I love to see shahrukh in these quality movies, such as Swades, and not in Don & Om Shanti Om)
Waqt was a nice movie ( although I didn’t like how the movie started, the song in the desert) but it was a funny movie.
Aryan: Don’t worry for him, Akshay will grow bigger, I’m suure.
Punjabi Sher: (September 9, 2008 at 9:42 pm)
My frnd Aryan…………U are 100% Right. Akshay is a great actor. This man can pull crowd towards the cinema hall. I cant understand the choice of this grl Fathiya. Sometimes she say that i like romantic movies and sometimes she say that i like action movies……….And I have see n the first person in my life who is saying that akshay doesnt do good comedy………Yaar Aryan say her that if she cant understand our language hindi, punjabi.then how can she understand our movies in a proper way. She is judging the comedy scenes by the hand movement and facial expressions but akshays comedy is realy differant his comments are realy funny……….And she is comparing saif with akshay…..Oh!!!! Saif is even not in top 5. Akshay is a superstar. AND AKSHAY RULES……….THE KING OF BOLLYWOOD.

Some people think that I don’t understand Hindi language and I said already that I do understand 70% of it and also while watching any movie, I pay attention to the translation, so that I understand every word I hear.
I’ve been watching Indian movies since my childhood and learned the language, not only that, we got a Pakstani driver who works in our house since 30 years, and we always speak to him hindi as he doesn’t speak English. In addition, u all use in your language many words which r exactly the same words in our language Persian ( they r many, and I can’t remember all but I will mention some) Hawa, darwaza, nikab, Dil, Jaan, Kismat, door, nazdeek, raasta, aina, asaan, bad baoo, khoshi, gand (and some words which r similar e.g. Aasuman, Zameen, qareeb, qayamat, etc). They are many, in every 2 or 3 scentences we hear Indian people speak, we find some similar words, therefore, it was easy for us to learn the language, not only that, I hv some Indian friends and sometimes I ask them the meaning of some words, and they tell me, so I learned, but, some people here, and as they just want to show that I don’t know how to judge any movie and just to prove that I’m wrong, they ignore what I said already and keep on asking the same question!!
I love romantic & comedy( but not all romantic, comedy movies) I love thriller, horror ( but not all movies), I love suspense, drama ( but not all type) but action ( I love few of them) as all these type of movies depend on the script, direction, quality, performance, etc.
Quality movies only satisfy me even if they were a small production e.g. Phir Milenge for Salman Khan, a small production but a good movie in the script, direction and Salman, Shilpa’s acting. I haven’t seen any good movie for Salman after this one.

FATHIYA :ASKED ME ONE QUESTION REGARDING ANARI FOR THAT I AM TELLING THE
ANSWER,ANARI MEANS WEAK IN ALL THE WAYS FOR EXAMPLE:IN TALENT,ACTING,FITNESS
Aryan: (September 10, 2008 at 10:33 am)
Fathiya if u really liked the name Aryan i hope u wud have found the meaning by now(Googled)
Anywyz Aryan means “person who is kind and gentle”
since u hav so much info on SRK, I think SRK is ur childhood crush n u love him bigtime(considering that u r in the age grp of 25-35), iwill not b surprised if u name ur son Sharukh/Aryan (No offence please)
Here’s my list…
1.Aamir/Akshay :these can mould in any type of characters
3.SRK/Hritik :limited to Romantic,to some extent comic roles Hritik-serious,stylish and larger thn life role
5.Ajay Devgan/Saif : again limited to serious roles latter can climb the ladder
This list purely on the basis of actors in different roles and how sucessful they were in potraying it wowing the crowd
Afteral we go into theatres to release mental stress out of our mind and dish out the hard earned money
hope plp will agree to this list…
Aryan: (September 10, 2008 at 10:40 am)

And Aryan…….U are right man. My views about Aamir and akshay are same as u………..
Fathiya: (September 11, 2008 at 2:42 am)
Aryan: Saif was good in comedy, he played a nice character in Dil Chata Hai and in Kal Ho Na Ho, Saif can play anything, romantic, comedy, villain, action, politics even thriller movies. Saif is perfect for any role. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw him in his role in Omkara!! He really surprised me as I never thought that Saif would be able to play such a role! ( and how the makeup, the hair style can change the look of any actor!!) Aamir can play any role, Shahruk (I already explained) Hrithik: A super hero, a perfrect charm and a beatury for the Indian cinema as well as his talent. Hrithik is exceptional, and he might surprise us in future in some new roles. Ajay Devgan: Got a sad deep eyes. He is perfect in serious, politics, thriller, drama, romantic ( but if he tried to be funny, people would laugh at him, not because he’s not capable of doing comedy, but because he’s a wrong actor for such roles, just like he’s walking in some wrong shoes).
And about Akshay: He can play different roles, as I already explained, but he is not capable of performing at his best in some sad scenes as he doesn’t have a sad face expression ( like John Abraham) and to perform well in serious & sad scenes, that’s is the most difficult work for an actor to do on the screen) the only one who truly does it is ( Amitab Pachan) no one can act in sad scenes as he does, then comes Naseeruddin Shah, Anil Kapoor, Hrithik Roshan, Aamir Khan, Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Rampal & Saif, they can perform well too, but Akshay, I don’t think so.
So PUNJABI SHER: this doesn’t mean that Akshay or Shahrukh r bad actors ..no.. it means that the directors and the producers have to give the correct roles to the correct actors, that’s all.

Thanks Dr. Patel for your reply,
I saw the Film Fare awards last year, but I can’t remember all the parts of the function, and I read about shahrukh, but, as in Bahrain, we don’t get all the Indian magazines, so, definitely I missed some news and what happened in the star’s life or their relationship with each other.
I just know one thing for sure, that Shahrukh was worried and he was certain that his stardom won’t last for ever. It’s a fact which he knows and aware of it, that he won’t last for long as he’s not better than Dilip Kumar, Rajesh Khanna or Amitab Pachan, I watched his dvd:”The inner and outer of Shahrukh” and listened to every word he said.
But what happened exactly in his relationship with Salman or Mr. Pachan, I don’t know, u might be right, but Dr. Patel, people aren’t angels, they make mistakes, all of us make mistakes and Shahrukh apologizes too, he’s not that arrogant or mean, if he was, then why Rani Mukerji said during an interview which I saw in t.v. that if she want to praise shahrukh she’d need to issue a book talking about him, not only Rani, many actresses, actors praised him and for years.
About his talent, his performance, shahrukh did a brilliant work in Devdas, and he got an award as the best actor in that year, and he was ok in Paheli, not bad. In Kal Ho Na Ho, he was so good in the comedy scenes ( and he also got the award as best actor for the movie) yes.. shahrukh needs to perform better in some sad scenes ( and I mentioned this already in many websites) and in Don ( that’s not his fault, Farhan Akhtar gave the role to a wrong actor!) as Shahrukh doesn’t fit in any negative roles, and maybe that’s the reason that Shahrukh doesn’t want to do Don2 and rejected the script.
Dr. Patel: I’m sure that u didn’t like Shahrukh’s acting in some scenes only, of any movie u watched for him, but not in the whole movie e.g. his acting in KKKG was good, but he didn’t perform well in some sad scenes, specially in the scene where his father ask him to leave home.
In KANK, he was ok but he didn’t do well in some scenes, not all the scenes of the movie. Maybe it’s time now for shahrukh to work harder and perform better in his upcoming movies.. we’ve to wait and see, he might surprise us with his acting, no one knows!
Suniel: Hello br. I know that Akshay is a good human being, and I wish him all the best, I’m certain that he became a better person after marriage. He is modest but..but.. some big positions might change people, and u don’t know if Akshay will continue being a good and a humble person if he could make it, and won the title as The King of Bollywood!
