There has been a lot of discussion in the comments section as to who the Top 5 actors in Bollywood are at the moment. Most in the Singh Is King Box office collection topic were of the opinion that Akshay Kumar post Singh is King has gone past Shahrukh Khan as the King of Bollywood.
So we decided to do some research on the Top 5 actors in Bollywood and their last 5 movies. The actors included in the battle are Shahrukh Khan, Akshay Kumar, Hrithik Roshan, Aamir Khan and Salman Khan.
The results were quite unexpected. A few things before we give you the numbers.
Some points to remember are, actors with more releases in recent times (Post 2006) have an advantage over actors whose movies released in say 2003. That is because of the mutliplexes that have come up all over the country and also the increase in the number of prints.
So Akshay Kumar has a much bigger advantage over Aamir Khan as Aamir’s 5th movie Dil Chahta Hai released in 2001, when there were hardly any multiplexes. Also dont forget the inflation!
Here are the number.
5. Salman Khan – Salman Khan is at Number 5. We havent taken God Tussi Great Ho into count as it has just released last week and its final gross is awaited. He mainly suffers because of Marigold, as it did less than 1 crore of business in India! Salman has just one Blockbuster i.e Partner.
- Jaan-E-Mann (2006) – 27 crores – Flop
- Babul (2006) – 17 crores – Flop
- Saalam-e-Ishq (2007) – 24 crores – Flop
- Partner (2007) – 62 crores – Blockbuster
- Marigold (2007) – 1 crore – Disaster
Total – 131 crores
Average – 26.2 crores per movie.
4. Aamir Khan – Aamir Khan although at a huge disadvantage is at Number 4. Imagine if Dil Chahta Hai had released today? It would have grossed atleast a minimum of 50 crores at the box office. Still since his come back the perfectionist has 2 Superhits and 1 Blockbuster to his credit.
- Dil Chahta Hai (2001) – 16 crores – Hit
- Mangal Pandey (2005) – 29 crores – Average
- Rang De Basanti (2006) – 51 crores – Super Hit
- Fanaa (2006) – 53 crores – Super Hit
- Taare Zameen Par (2007) – 61 crores – Blockbuster
Total – 210 crores
Average – 42 crores per movie.
3. Shahrukh Khan – Has been affected big time due to the failure of Paheli. It didnt even get a face saving opening at the box-office and did just 13 crores. Rest of his movies have done well. KANK and Don bearly managed to go on to be hits. Chak De and Om Shanti Om were blockbusters.
- Paheli (2005) – 13 crores – Flop
- Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna (2006) – 46 crores – Above Average to Hit
- Don (2006) – 50 crores – Hit
- Chak De India (2007) – 64 crores – Blockbuster
- Om Shanti Om (2007) – 87 crores – Blockbuster
Total – 260 crores
Average – 52 crores per movie.
2. Akshay Kumar – Now this was a real toughie. But we decided to push Akshay Kumar down to second due to several reasons. He is the only star to not have a single solo ‘Blockbuster’ to his credit (Welcome was a multistarrer with Anil Kapoor, Paresh Rawal and Nan Patekar). Although we have included Singh Is King, it has not completed its complete run at the boxoffice. We had to predict the total nett gross of Singh Is Kinng to 72 crores (44 crores in week one is confirmed + 18 crores in week 2 is also confirmed + 6 crores in week 3 and about 4 crores in the rest of the weeks is a prediction). The other reason for placing him at second is he is the only actor who has the advantage of every movie releasing Post – 2006. No release in the Pre multiplex era of India Cinema.
- Heyy Babyy (2007) – 52 crores – Super hit
- Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007) – 54 crores – Super hit
- Welcome (2007) – 76 crores – Blockbuster (Multistarrer)
- Tashan (2008) – 31 crores – Flop
- Singh Is King (2008) – 72 crores – Hit to Super hit
Total – 285 crores
Average – 57 crores per movie.
1. Hrithik Roshan – By far the youngest actor in the list, Hrithik Roshan by pure box office numbers of India, tops although by a very close margin. 2 solo blockbusters (KMG, Krrish), 1 multi star Blockbuster (Dhoom 2) and 1 Super hit (Jodha Akbar). His only failure in the last 4 years has been Lakshya which did average business at the boxoffice. A great comeback after about 6 failures in a row after Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai.
Hrithik also has two movies pre 2006 which is a disadvantage.
- Koi Mil Gaya (2003) – 44 crores – Super Hit
- Lakshya (2004) – 23 crores – Average
- Krrish (2006) – 66 crores – Blockbuster
- Dhoom 2 (2006) – 86 crores – Blockbuster
- Jodhaa Akbar (2008) – 63 crores – Super Hit
Total – 282 crores
Average – 56.4 crores per movie.
The whole list might change when Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and Chandni Chowk To China release in December. SRK could make it to the top if Rab Ne works big time. How Chandni Chowk fares will also be interesting. Hrithik’s kites releases in the summer of 2009 and there is news that it could be sold for 100 crores if not more. Aamir Khan’s Ghajini too releases this year end and is expected to create boxoffice history.
We will post an update here after all the 3 movies; Rab Ne, Chandni Chowk and Ghajini release.
Note – These figures are only of how the movies fared at the Indian Box-office. Shahrukh Khan is the undisputed king of the overseas box-office. Akshay Kumar and Hrithik Roshan come a close second and third.

i agree with ARYAN with his choice of the most romantic films. those are my favourite films too. the best romantic films ever. and yes, veer zara’s music is very very melodious and ethereal. i thought i was the only one that identified with good music, but it seems there are other genuinely good people around who also know good music when they hear it. bravo to ARYAN.

i will continue to argue for akshay kumar, not because i like him a lot, which i dont, but because he IS the no.1 star in bollywood today. check the tabloids, the news, the magazines, the t.v. shows , the bollywood media who declaring akshay as no.1. now, in view of all this, i do my own research then argue for whoever is supposed to be no.1 based on all the facts. if shahid kapoor had been in akshays position, had given more superhits than anyone else in the last 3 years, was the only bankable star in bollywood, i would argue for shahid kapoor and support him. one cannot dismiss the facts and what is currently going on in bollywood.
and ASHOK, make note that whatever level you put hrithik at or no matter how many blockbusters he has given, he is not no.1 in india at present. akshay kumar is. check out the facts, or ask anyone in bollywood. they will tell you. so it is useless arguing whether hrithik is a better actor than akshay, he who is no.1 is obviously the better actor and star.

What a silly, stupid, meaningless movie (Welcome) is!!!!!! a blockbuster movie?!!!! based on what?!!! based on the audience who loves these type of movies?!!! believe me all.. I watched only half then stopped the dvd running as this movie made me nervous( if Singh is Kingh is a super hit, so it deserves to be as the comedy was nice, Akshay was funny and did a good work and it was an interesting movie with good songs) but this Welcome, a total crap only the song (welcome) was nice, that’s all!!

Raj & Punajabi Sher, both of them think that some of us hate Akshay Kumar because we talk about each actor’s strength & weakness ( but for Akshay.. they think that we’re not allowed to do so as we have to praise him only!!) They just ignore that we talk also about the actors we admire e.g. Shahrukh which I’m crazy for and a big fan, I criticise him too but never say bad things about him like some people do by saying: he’s mean, he’s jealous, he’s bad!! Every actor in his profession, must hv some weakness, but the weakness won’t be noticed in any actor if he selects the roles which suits him and his character ( so if an actor went wrong, selected wrong, people would criticise him).

Also, Welcome was NOT a solo blockbuster. It had Anil Kapoor.. Actually there were no lead roles in Welcome.. Everyone had equally meaty roles.. Anil Kapoor, Nana Patekar, Paresh Rawal, Akshay Kumar!

Dhoom 2 opened big because of Hrithik, not Abhishek. Kabhi Alvida opened big because of SRK, not Abhishek. Yet, both movies are multistarrers!
In Hollywood, some of the biggest blockbusters to date have been the Startrek series, the Superman flicks and the Spiderman trilogy. Yet, none of the lead actors in these films, which have literally broken box office records, have been recognised as superstars. Yes, they are certainly known as bankable stars but not superstars. On the other hand, actors such as Denzel Washington, Tom Hanks, Anthony Hopkins are known as superstars with several oscars under their belts. This is because of their ACTING abilities and not because of their box office collections.
Of late, Bollywood has decided that at its award functions, all stars should be extremely well dressed, in designer wear, and they have even introduced the Red Carpet. This is a direct lift from Hollywood, and in my opinion it is a good move. So then, why does not Bollywood also adopt Hollywood’s preference for acting ability over box office success?
In Bollywood, typically, if a film does well at the box office, the lead actors are immediately elevated in status, and if one particular actor scores more than two or three box office successes, he is immediately dubbed a Superstar! This, in my opinion, is WRONG!! And would never ever happen in Hollywood. A Superstar is one who has acting talent and not earning-talent. That is why Dr R C Patel’s comments are spot-on. Well done, Dr Patel, and please catch on, Bollywood!
ABD: what u have explained is absolutely right, and that’s what I was trying to explain in this website, under this page and under other pages. In Hollywood, eveyone agree that Anthony Hopkins, Denzil, Robert Denero, Alpachino and many others are super stars and no one would argue or fight with u to crown one of them as ( King of Hollywood) have u ever heard that this happens there?!!
And what u have said proves that the reason for any movie to be a blockbuster, a successful one at the box office is not the actor, the actor’s performance itself, it’s because of the script, direction, production and who acts in the movie is a part of the success but not 100% the reason for the success.

now, WELCOME was a solo blockbuster. it was an out and out akshay kumar film. you can’t consider anil kapoor, nana patekar as lead actors !!. their fame ran out way back in the mid 1990’s !! they can’t sell any film on thier own, and are just doing character roles these days.
so how can you class WELCOME as a multi starrer ?? these actors were just playing character roles, they cant be considered as playing the leads alonside akshay ! they are unmarketable actors. the film did well do to akshays pulling power. the rest were just character actors. so WELCOME was a solo blockbuster for akshay.
if instead of anil kapoor and nana patekar, there were famous actors like abhishek bhachan or john abraham, then yes, you would consider it as a multi-starrer. but it is not. akshay was the main star of the film.

About Akshay and Shahrukh’s movies, just try to remember all the movies which both of them did for the past 15 years, Akshay did many movies, even more than Shahrukh but few of them only were good, but Shahrukh, most of his movies were good, excellent and few only weren’t that good which didn’t affect him as the king of bollywood ( that’s the difference between Shahrukh & Akshay)

Just one more comment on thie current discussion Al Pacino, Tom Hanks these actors are similar to our actors like Naseer, Anupam. Even in Hollywood Brad Pitt, Clooney ,Johney Depp are considered real superstars n charge more than the above mentioned names. Oscars is a mixture of National Awards and Filmfare here in INDIA.

And.. do indian nations, all of them, consider Akshay now the king? Did they announce it officially?
Punjabi Sher, you cannot say the movie worked just because of Akshay. Why didnt Tashan work then? It was a major disaster!
So what i am trying to say is. Whether it is Anil Kapoor or Nana Patekar or even Paresh Rawal (remember Malamaal Weekly had no stars only Paresh and the movie was one of the biggest hit of the year). All of them have a fan following. Akshay might be the main attraction but others add to the overall value too.
And not to forget Welcome was directed by the No Entry director. Director matters a lot too!
Fathiya, its the media who decides the King. Currently they call Akshay, Kinng Kumar and SRK, King Khan. SRK got the Baadshah tag after he did the movie Baadshah in the late 90s. Akshay got it with Singh is King. Its all media given titles. Hrithik isnt given much hype because he aint media friendly and doesnt give too many interviews. Same for Aamir Khan.
But overall, If you as me I would say Aamir Khan is the most respected actor along with Amitabh Bachchan from the Hindi Film Industry. There is obviously Kamal Hassan and Mohan Lal who are equally respected and admired.
SRK, Hrithik, Akshay and Aamir have been the most consistent at the box-office if you go by the success ratio in the last few films and overall gross! Akshay Kumar is a great entertainer, but he has to prove his histrionics in the acting department, in something that is mroe serious than a mindless comedy. Just my opinion though
Aryan, A Wednesday is a brilliant movie. One of the very best in recent times. Deserves a lot more at the boxoffice. Naseeruddin Shah is a legend, one of the very best in India!
