Rustom vs Mohenjo Daro: Box Office Clash Analysis

A couple of weeks ago, Ashutosh Gowarikar’s Mohenjo Daro was one of the most awaited films of 2016. The trailer was expected to make a huge impact, giving the Hrithik Roshan starrer a big advantage in the box office clash against Akshay Kumar’s Rustom.

After all, on paper, Mohenjo Daro ticked almost every box. A talented and more established director. Bigger budget and scale. A bigger box office star, who does fewer films. The genre was also in Mohenjo Daro’s favour, after the success of ‘Baahubali’ and ‘Bajirao Mastani’.

But now that the trailers of both films are out, the tables have turned and the clash is now going to be much closer.

Rustom is leading at this point in time, because the costs are much lower and the trailer has managed to find appreciation – both with the audience and trade. This will result in Rustom getting higher number of screens than it previously would (not compared to Mohenjo Daro), it’s also likely to get a decent single-screen release. The film could also get equal number of shows at multiplexes, which will be a massive advantage.

As things stand today, Rustom has already won half the battle with a solid trailer. Mohenjo Daro will now rely on music to increase the buzz and post-release, the content to click big time.

The math is simple, to recover costs, both films combined have to collect more than Rs 230 crore at the box office. The ratio will be 65:35. Mohenjo Daro will not only have to take the lead against Rustom, it’ll have to nearly double its collections.

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time Ashutosh Gowariker is taking on a biggie. Exactly 15 years ago, Lagaan released with Gadar. Gowarikar lost the clash, but his film did well enough to recover costs and Lagaan went on to become only the 3rd Oscar nominated Indian film.

Rustom doesn’t even need to be a Gadar, not even close, but Mohenjo Daro will have to match or get close to the quality of Lagaan.

  • Rustom and Mahenjodaro should have to collect good numbers as both are promising movies.
Rustom already generated huge expectations after trailer and Mahenjodaro as I would expecting also a good contenct flick..
#Akshay and #Hrithik would rule this season.

  • My predictions……

    Mohenjodaro- 130-135cr.

    Rustam- 55-60cr.

    P.S- without any manipulation!!!

  • Half the battle won
    Make way for rustom
    Haters are burning
Getting a feeling that rustom is gone be a masterpiece once in a lifetime movie
3rd 100 cr for akshay sir

  • rustom trailer is received much better than md ,rustom winning almost every poll on twitter ,music is looking good ,their promotional strategy is good so far ,it will get a good screen count ,everybody is in support of rustom be it trade or even celebrities on the other hand md is facing negativity all around like historic innacuracy and trailer was also not received well
so rustom is ahead of md
now listen one thing akki fans ,we don’t want any excuse on 13th august

  • Mahenjo Daro will definately have a huge weekend but after that the content will take control of this clash, screens wont even matter if one film is completely rejected.

  • All the best Hrithik…you are the best and you will create History. Our love is with you. Cant wait for 12th Aug

  • Audience would have already spent huge on biggies like SULTAN & Kabaali. Hence most of them gonna skip both the so called classics!!!

  • it is not important film budget it’s important film story both are real life story and about mohenjo daro is different and about rustom is different… kaon jeetega pata chal jaayega…

  • i liked the article about the trade response and audience response of mohenjodaro, expecting an equally elaborative article for rustom

  • an actor who does one film in two years and then also manipulate the collections..Bang bang is 140 cr as per BoI and just a semi hit but still for you he is bigger star than akki..hrithik cant even do 3 films in a year and akshay is on verge of giving 3 100 cr grossers…akshay is beyond comparisons becoz his way of working is totally different to khans and hrithik…
