Rocket Singh Box Office Updates

Apart from the dull promos and poor pre-release promotion, Rocket Singh – Salesman of the year was expected to open to decent, if not good numbers due to two reasons.

  1. Ranbir Kapoor after the success of Wake Up Sid and Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, was expected to bring in the audience by his sheer presence.
  2. Shimit Amin’s last film, Chak De India, was one of those rare films that achieved both critical acclaim and huge box office success.

Shockingly, Rocket Singh has opened to poor numbers on Friday.

There were reports that the advance booking was good, but the morning shows at certain places were as low as 5%. On Friday morning, we watched the movie with exactly 8 others, on a screen with a capacity of close to 500.

Afternoon and evening shows, did boost collections as expected with collections of around 50%. Saturday morning and afternoon shows were better, but were still below expectations.

With low costs, the makers will easily recover their investment through video and television rights alone, but HIT business theatrically seems unlikely now. Unless, the film picks up on Sunday and holds up well during the weekdays.

Although the critics have had only good things to say, the response from the audience has been mixed. “Boring” – “Too long” – “We expected a comedy” is what most people we spoke to, had to say.

Rocket Singh is really a good movie.. a very refreshing story and quite well made.. You really got to appreciate the makers in not compromising to make the movie more entertaining…

but no matter how much I want this film to work at the BO, it will surely not! A majority of the audience will finding this movie slow & boring & too long… I doubt this kind of a movie will work at single screens… the low pre-release marketing doesn’t help either.

Although its a pity that such a nice film will not be successful but it was very much expected.

Remeber the times when fine films like Silsila (amitabh, rekha) Lamhe (anil kapoor, sri devi), Khamoshi (salman khan, Manisha Koirala), 1942 a love story (anil, manisha), andaaz apna apna (aamir, salman) all flopped at the box-office. the reason was that these films was way ahead in time and were far too different from what the audience were used to at that time. Just observe…the films i’ve mentioned above are still watched and liked by people and everyone says good things about them. Silsila, Lamhey and andaaz apna apna are now counted among classics.

I believe that Rocket Singh was also a but ahead of these times…but i am sure that the format and pattern of the movie will be picked up by keen minds and few years down the lane…such formats will start emerging as success ventures at the BO.

Akhlaq– totally agree with u… ppl r more into masala movies dese days so movies like RS find it difficult to get their place.
just as Indicine had mentioned earlier if Aankhen starrin amitabh, akshay was released nw it had a much better chance. ;)

This movie was truely brilliant. Ranbir s too gud. :)

ppl who found this movie average or below truely need to raise their standards…;)

100% agreed with Akhlaq but its a pitty that such a nice film wont work at boxoffice.

Rocket Singh Collects 10.25 Crore Nett Over First Weekend

Monday 14th December 2009 11.00 IST
Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Rocket Singh – Salesman Of The Year grossed around 10.25 crore nett over its first weekend. The film had a dull Friday and was a little better on Saturday and while Sunday did show better collections the overall weekend remained well below the mark.

The first week is probably heading for business of around the 15 crore nett mark although it depends on what happens on Monday. The film will recover its low costs when all revenue sources like Satellite, DVD etc are factored in but the Indian theatrical business looks likely to finish well below expectations unless there is a dramatic turnaround in business over the next few days. There are segments of the audience which have liked the film but the core fan following of Ranbir Kapoor is amongst the youth and this audience has kept away from the film as yet.

Looking at exceptional performance of Paa over second week, Exhibitors has decided to increase the screenings of Paa in third week. This type of occasions is rarely seen in bollywood when any movie gets more screen space than previous week. And this is not the case in one or two multiplexes, Every multiplex across the nation is either retaining the same shows or increasing the volume. Almost 20% screenings/shows will be increased in multiplexes and even some single screen cinemas are showing upward trend.

Second Week of Paa has seen excellent weekend (7.25 Crore) and Exceptional Weekdays (Approx. 4 Crore). 4 Crore weekdays collections (44% drop) is dream collections even for big budget multi-starrer ventures. De Dana Dan second weekdays collections was merely 2.5 Crore on 800 screens. While Paa has collected 4 Crore from mere 300+ Screens.

If Third weekend of Paa will remain steady at 20% more screens, then we can expect similar collections in third week too. Paa is now heading for higher achievements to go beyond 40 Crores in 3 weeks itself.

Rocket Singh is a good film for Intelligent audience, i.e who like watching good, healthy & different movies unlike the normal comedy, romance or masala movies… Its only when such films get good response, the producers will try thinsg differently… or else Bollywood will continue to be famous for romantic songs & some period films…
