Ghajini Movie Review

Ahh.. The biggest movie of the year is finally here. Aamir Khan’s Ghajini brings with it the huge amount of expectations that people usually carry with them to the theatre while watching an Aamir Khan film. The full house go crazy while Aamir first appears on screen, the craze is mind boggling something that I haven’t witnessed since I started watching movies a decade and a half ago.

Sanjay Singhania is a business tycoon, who has very recently come down to India. Due to certain weird circumstances, he falls in love with Kalpana (Asin), a sweet lovable girl with a heart of gold. While Sanjay is on a business trip, Kalpana in an attempt to save girls from some dreaded criminals puts her life at risk. On the day of Sanjay’s return, Kalpana is killed by Ghajini while Sanjay is injured on his head. This leads to a mental disorder called anterograde amnesia. Sanjay suffers from short term memory loss; he forgets everything in 15 mins! His only goal though is to kill Ghajini, how he battles against all odds is what forms the rest of the tale.

Ghajini Hindi Review

Your first reaction after watching Ghajini is WOW What a movie!! You look at your watch to realize 3 hours have breezed through. You catch hold of your breathe and come to terms with a movie that has just managed to blow you away. It aint a movie that you would remember and want to watch 5 years from now, in fact it lacks repeat value as the thrill would be missing the second time. But what Aamir Khan and the Ghajini team have served is a fulto masala entertainer. It has comedy, romance, action, a typical 90s villian, great music, emotions.. Ghajini has got it all.

There are so many memorable moments and scenes in Ghajini. To describe a few..

1) When Aamir is chasing the cop and Jiah, he suddenly loses his memory. Yet tries to recognise Jiah by her rapid breathe rate.

2) The Aamir – Asin love story. He’s a business tycoon; she’s a pretty ordinary girl. The way their love story begins is sweet and extremely funny!

3) The villian! Neck and fingers filled with gold jewellery, a silver tooth, menacing look et al. Ghajini is a typical 90s villian. Almost perfect for a revenge movie. The most surprising thing was, the movie has been named after the villian, which usually isnt the case with Bollywood movies. Has a movie ever been titled, inspired by the character of a non-star villian?

4) The climax! Scintillating stuff. It seems quite easy to predict, what could happen next. But the short term memory loss makes the movie quite unpredictable.

A.R. Murugadoss directing his first Bollywood film deserves credit for his brilliant execution of the script. The climax of the Hindi version is different, if compared to the original in Tamil. The brilliant camera work and fantastic background score is one of the many other positives.

So is it too violent? The answer is No, it isn’t a very violent movie. Apart from certain scenes like the tattoos being scratched off from Aamir’s chest – abdomen and a few physical fights resulting in twisting of necks, the violence is limited to about 15 mins. Far less brutal than the CCTV captures of the Mumbai terrorist attacks that was aired on almost all news channels.

Any flaws? Yes, the songs. About 2 songs too many in the first half; Behka Main and Aye Bachchu were unnecessary.

The performances were top notch. Asin proves to be a very good actress, quite unexpected as I wasn’t expecting much from her, after those promos. Good screen presence, bubbly and charismatic.

Aamir Khan is brilliant! An actor who can never disappoint, neither with his performances nor the overall quality of his movies. He is by far the best star-actor of the decade. What with a different variety of movies like Lagaan, Dil Chahta Hai, Rang De Basanti, Taare Zameen Par and now Ghajini! All very different, but brilliant nonetheless!

Overall, Ghajini is a must watch, a complete paisa vasool entertainer. A movie that should be experienced only on the big screen. Lastly, watch it for Aamir Khan and his sheer brilliance on screen. He is to Bollywood, what Sachin Tendulkar is to cricket. A legend!

Rating: ★★★★☆

Other Notes – The atmosphere in the movie hall was electrifying, something that I have never witnessed. Going by the audience reaction, the movie seems to have lived upto the expectations. People were glued to their seats till the very end.

Hope you all enjoy Ghajini. Post your Ghajini reviews below. Merry Christmas and a Very Happy New Year from the Indicine Team!

Update – What Aamir Khan expected actually happened. In an interview, he mentioned that if people walk out with his physique and 8 pack abs in mind, then the movie has failed to connect. So yeah, the movie did connect and Aamir’s looked great in Ghajini. In all the excitement, I missed Jiah Khan too, it was a forgettable performance. Her most important scene was when Aamir gets down from the scooter to fight the goons, Jiah’s expressions while trying to stop Aamir was hard to digest!

  • I’ve had this in college too, this thing that makes people divide our one united India into northie and southie. Very very sad. I’ve got those idiots in my college taught a lesson for consistent disrespect of other people. South it seems. Deepika Padukone, Aishwarya Rai, Kamal Hassan, Priyadarshan, AR Rahman, I don’t want to carry on, many are from this part of India. They are all Indians. I don’t think there’s any necessity to give the impression that South Indians are inferior. No wonder India is getting screwed up. Idiots like this exist everywhere. Its a cancer that has spread beyond recovery and it is very distressing to see it.

  • Minu: My only mistake is talking to some stupid ppl here like u are!! If yet.. u don’t know the difference between the slang and bad language which I’m requesting ppl not to use and between expressing opinions about movies and actors.. that’s yr problem dear.. I can say this actor is so talented, this one is not.. this movie is good.. this one is not.. this singer’s voice is no good any more.. that’s not abusive.. that’s what some of you (don’t) accept but u do accept when someone call shahrukh as: Bastard!! so that isn’t abusive!

If I said for example: Aksahy is a good actor but he’s not so special.. that’s not a bad thing to say.. that’s an opinion, but the bad thing is when ppl visit the wab site and say: this actor is gay with no evidence.. or say: he’s bastard, dog, whatever and describe him with the worstl

So Minu: You need to go to school again to learn all this!!

  • as usual ms faathiya has set the guidlines and those who dont follow her guidlines will not be allowed to stand for elections!!!! ha ha ha.. also their tongues will be cut off and they will have to go to nursery schools request their teachers to take special classes in etiquete .while all the time ms faathiya will snooze and when you have been certified by the agency and also after incdicine team approves of your credentials will u be allowed to say what you wanna ..im just waitingher to gleefully come back after the movie and tell us how well she has appreciated aamir sirs work and what else was good /lacking in the movie cos her comments will be preserved at the oscar library

coming to the movie it is very gruesome just as all south indian movies are ..asin is too big built to make it in hindi film industry where the emphasis is on being wafer thin..the songs keep interuppting the narrative which i think got too long withe lovestory…and why the interest in this subject of temporary amnesia by a final yr student ? idont understand cos this is not the subject tin the final year!!
aamir was fine but the distiction between when he remembers and forgets is not very clear at times.. when he is normal is he sanjay then? if he is then why doesnt he stay in his house ..but when he loses it does he become sanjay then? cos that is the time when he is full of rage!!..something which was not easy to understand..this is a movie which you will not like to see again for sure..

  • Indicine Team: I planned to watch Ghaajini today, but I changed my mind at the last moment.. while getting the tickets.. as I was not in a mood to watch violence.. and needed to watch a nice “happy & funny” movie, something similar to RBNDJ but a hollywood flick.. so I’ve selected “Twilight” as everyone was praising the movie.
What a sweet vampire movie.. about a romantic vampire.. haha.. really nice movie, it’s different, clean, innocent and nice.. if all of u r interested in hollywood movies, so watch this one, worth watching on a big screen.

I will come back with my review about Ghajini this week as for sure I will watch it on Monday or Tuesday.

  • Hi People,
Yeah its true this movie rocks, I was afraid that if it would have been a complete momento (the original version) then it might have been a bit confusing, but the movie is different and nicely made. Aamir and that new girl asin rocks ( correct me if a spelled her name wrong). About Aamir after his flops in the 90’s including mela etc he has completely changed and has won for himself the title of mr. perfectionist and it can be seen in his role here. Great movie ( although a remake of the english –> tamil). Ha Ha Ha and Fathiya the movie is good although it contains violence but again I believe not good for ur sis).
@Yamini: Have you seen momento, if you have then you will find ghajini far more easier to understand ghajini.
Nonetheless It IS A GREAT MOVIE TO WATCH I GIVE IT 4.5 COZ OF THE FACT THAT I’M A GREAT FAN OF AAMIR ( HEHEHEHE).
And one more thing why you people always start fighting while writing the comments ( This goes for FATHIYA,YAMINI etc)

  • Hello Aadil: let me ask u first s a question.. u guys mentioned many times about a movie called “momento” is it a hollywood, bollywood or s tamil movie?

I will watch Ghaajini for sure coz I loved most of Aamir Khan’s movies which I saw during 7 years : Dil Chata Hai, Lagaan, Mangal Pandey, Fana, & TZP ( except Rang de Basanti) and I’m sure that Ghaajini is a good movie, but u said it’s not good for my sister..means there are some vulgar, love scenes or nudity?

And I’m not fighting anymore with Yamini or some others.. I’m just ignoring their comments.. I even don’t read them.. I ignore ppl who use bad language.. let them write whatever they want coz their comments will be deleted for sure.

  • Fathiya, Let me answer your questions.

Momento is a Hollywood movie with a similar concept i.e A man, with short term memory loss problem is in search of a killer who killed his wife.

By saying its not good for his sister, he probably meant because its slightly violent. Killing, a bit of blood etc.. I didnt personally find it too violent.

Regarding Vulgarity, Nudity or love making scenes.. There is nothing.. Its a clean family entertainer.

  • Thanks Indicine Team for your reply, but Aadil meant with his comment my sister.. because while discussing with him a few days ago, I mentioned about my sister.. that whenever she wants to go to cinema and watch a bollywood movie.. she asks me if it’s a clean movie and innocent, therefore he mentioned that it’s not good for my sister.

Well if u say that the movie is ok, then I’ll watch it with her tomorrow, and will come back with my review.

    Thanks again

  • This is one of the very powerful action film ever presented by Indian cinema. It maay not be like by all, few films can have a universal likin. Some one may not lilke TZP, who knows. Its hard earned money we spent on tickets and expect to be entertained, at times we choose wrong movie and feel cheated.
For the people not watched movie, there are few remarks:

    1. It is a highly action packed movie with a great performance by Aamir, but if you expect anything like any of his previous movies, you will be disappointed. You have to see to believe what this short, handsom and telented actor can creat on screen: he has fired the screen. So if you expect something like TZP, DCH, Lagan etc. you will be disappointed.

    2. It is a sad story of revange where two very productive and cheerful lives got wasted, one died and another gone for revange. In the end you may feel sad, life is not always a bed of roses, so if you are looking for light entertainment to get away from the blues of life, this is not you cup of tea.

    3. If you believe that cinema is a source of entertainment and you are ready to see the efforts of a very telented and dedicated team: Go watch it and enjoy, this movie is full paisa vasool.

  • I saw ghajini today- evening show,it was HOUSEFULL.I feel the movie ,owing to smart publicity
would recover cost within 1st week and as predicted might become the first film to garner 100
crores from Indian market.Regarding the film, it starts off quite well , till intermission keeps yourself
hooked but with the 2nd flashback, the movie loses its spell and speed. It recovers again with Asin’s
murder but the lack of thrill gets inevitable. The movie has a South Indian feel in characterisation of
goons and ghajini. It is not a typical AAMIR movie ,there are plenty of logical loopholes, mediocre
    direction,poor characterisation.However among the positives will be Asin’s performance,Aamir-Asin
romance u can relate to,some good moments and AAMIR KHAN.He solely lifts this mediocre film to
something extraordinary. He has approximately 20 dialogues but a bucketful of facial expressions to
deliver. From a dignified chairman in love to a wounded tiger seeking revenge ,u just watch him and
root for him.His anguish when Asin gets killed and his desperation for revenge will haunt u.The songs
are good, not great but are not required by script.Overall a movie that would not remain etched in
your memory but an Aamir performance that is memorable and makes it a must watch at least once.

  • Hi Fathiya and Indicine Team,
Of course what indicine team has said is true. It has no vulgar scenes only some blood shedding and stuff.
If you talk about a family entertainer then I believe this movie is not suited for children, especially those who take a lot of influence from movies.
And Fathiya you are doing the right thing ignoring comments that have bad language used in them.

  • @Indicine Team
Yesterday I was reading in Times Of India( I think) that Rab Ne buiseness has crossed 90 Cr rupees and in the long term people say It will come up as the best movie or you can say the highest grosser, followed by may be Ghajni or SIK( It all depends on the second and third week buiseness of ghajini). Ghajini they say won’t be able to make that much money because of the violence( As it is not a movie for elders and children). So in the long run finally the TEARS OF SHAHRUKH WILL WIN OVER THE MUSCLE OF AAMIR. Your views please.

  • HI All,
Today i watched Ghajini thr was nothing spl for me bcoz i had already seen the Tamil version released few years bac the cinema hall was houseful, its a monday. i was expecting lot of college students but to my surprise thr were plp from all age grps, i was wondering hw can parents get thr 4-10 yr old kids to the movie which had so much of violence.
for the first time i saw plp actually feeling the reels that were running on the screen…”Asin gives a cal n u find the mobile in the car n not with aamir”
n i read aamir saying “its not a conventional remake” wel except for the climax every other scene is a clean take from the tamil version…
anywayz after watching the movie i had my own set of -ves from the movie…let me share some of them
    1. at times Aamir overacts which is not a strange thing for me bcoz he has hardly done a good action movie.
    2. the length of the movie is a problem 3 hrs is a bit to much…
    3. the movie gives a feel of south indian cinema…
    4. action scenes r a bit overboard which was not reqd…
    5. songs, this movie shud hav had 3 songs at max…

with all this in mind i wud say its a good movie…so we hav 3 movies with similar concept…
rest of the review, wel its up there…
    Rating:
    Ghajini (Hindi) : 7/10
    Ghajini (Tamil) : 7.5/10
    Memento (English): 8.5/10

  • Indicine Team: I’m back from cinema..watched Ghaajini.. I enjoyed the movie and was better than my expectations.. but the big question which I was asking myself while watching it: Why did Aamir named the movie as Ghaajini?! I was shocked that it was the criminal’s name and not “his name”!! the criminal wasn’t in a leading role at all and Aaamir was.. so that’s stupid!! and this happens for 1st time! The producer named his movie according to the criminal’s name who wasn’t playing any important role in the movie! Why?! that was my question. well if Aamir Khan is doing a remake of a tamil movie and in the Tamil version it’s the criminal’s name, so Aamir should’ve changed this flaw! I think it was more convincing if Ghaajini was his name.

About the movie: it was good, 3 hours passed and I didn’t get bored, but how if someone loses his memory can remember that he wrote some notes mentioning his home address or some ppl’s contact numbers?! I don’t think that if someone lost his memory would be able to remember that he (himslef) wrote some notes to lead him to his home address!
About the new actress, she wasn’t bad but I loved Anushka more and I think that Anushka Sharma will grab all the awards as the best debutant this year.
Jia Khan lost weight! How many kg’s?! 20 or more?! She looked better in Nishabd, her performance thu the movie was ok, wasn’t bad and she got a heroine’s face and charisma more than Asin.
The songs: not bad but not also that good
The action: was good in some scenes, but was “funny” in the last quarter.. like some cartoons!
Aamir’s performance: as usual, but he was overacting in some scenes.. was like the incredible hulk! like a roaring lion specially in the scene where he attacks the police man who breaks into his flat and jumps over his body, was just like an animal attacking a humen!!
When I saw the training sessions which Aamir attended to have this strong body on the tv, I thought that he will play the same in the movie.. attending these sessions to buildup a strong body, for a revenge to be strong to fight with the enemies.. but I was surprised that he was playing a a rich man, and after the incident, when the criminals attack him so he loses his memory.. he turns into something else automatically and gets this strong body like a gift from God or what?! How did it happen?! Not convincing!!

There’s no flawless movies, and we watch any movie to have a good time, and Ghaajini is a worth watching, at least for one time in cinema.

  • i dont know why our film makers when trhey pick up a south indian movie do not remove the southindian touches from the movie? even mani ratnam plays it with southindian characters and make up like in guru and bombay even tough he is using bambay craft

similarly here too the cast and crew is amply south indian . i have nothing against the south indian usage but there is a typical feel u get whwn u see the south movies .. instances here in the movie

the use of characters notably the policeman and the goons ..all south indian
the background score use of flute ..very soouth indian
the noncholant behavior of the heroine very very south indian . ive seen juotika and others do it in every film sometimes appears dubbed also and the constant chattering
the film doesnt explain why she falls for aamir when he doesnt show that he is rich and the heroine is quite ambitious
why is heroine so much like mother teresa and sweet another south indian curry
the action scenes remind you of south indian cinmea the same whir and fall and in one scene aamir swirls the villain to the wall ..another south indian spectacle!!

    a very average film

  • Indicine Team: more to add to my previous comment about Ghaajini:

Jiya Khan was a medical student.. how a medical student would dance on a stage in one scene in the movie?! That’s not convincing too coz medical students always serious people, they never dance in parties or on stages, as far as I know!
