Ghajini Movie Review

Ahh.. The biggest movie of the year is finally here. Aamir Khan’s Ghajini brings with it the huge amount of expectations that people usually carry with them to the theatre while watching an Aamir Khan film. The full house go crazy while Aamir first appears on screen, the craze is mind boggling something that I haven’t witnessed since I started watching movies a decade and a half ago.

Sanjay Singhania is a business tycoon, who has very recently come down to India. Due to certain weird circumstances, he falls in love with Kalpana (Asin), a sweet lovable girl with a heart of gold. While Sanjay is on a business trip, Kalpana in an attempt to save girls from some dreaded criminals puts her life at risk. On the day of Sanjay’s return, Kalpana is killed by Ghajini while Sanjay is injured on his head. This leads to a mental disorder called anterograde amnesia. Sanjay suffers from short term memory loss; he forgets everything in 15 mins! His only goal though is to kill Ghajini, how he battles against all odds is what forms the rest of the tale.

Ghajini Hindi Review

Your first reaction after watching Ghajini is WOW What a movie!! You look at your watch to realize 3 hours have breezed through. You catch hold of your breathe and come to terms with a movie that has just managed to blow you away. It aint a movie that you would remember and want to watch 5 years from now, in fact it lacks repeat value as the thrill would be missing the second time. But what Aamir Khan and the Ghajini team have served is a fulto masala entertainer. It has comedy, romance, action, a typical 90s villian, great music, emotions.. Ghajini has got it all.

There are so many memorable moments and scenes in Ghajini. To describe a few..

1) When Aamir is chasing the cop and Jiah, he suddenly loses his memory. Yet tries to recognise Jiah by her rapid breathe rate.

2) The Aamir – Asin love story. He’s a business tycoon; she’s a pretty ordinary girl. The way their love story begins is sweet and extremely funny!

3) The villian! Neck and fingers filled with gold jewellery, a silver tooth, menacing look et al. Ghajini is a typical 90s villian. Almost perfect for a revenge movie. The most surprising thing was, the movie has been named after the villian, which usually isnt the case with Bollywood movies. Has a movie ever been titled, inspired by the character of a non-star villian?

4) The climax! Scintillating stuff. It seems quite easy to predict, what could happen next. But the short term memory loss makes the movie quite unpredictable.

A.R. Murugadoss directing his first Bollywood film deserves credit for his brilliant execution of the script. The climax of the Hindi version is different, if compared to the original in Tamil. The brilliant camera work and fantastic background score is one of the many other positives.

So is it too violent? The answer is No, it isn’t a very violent movie. Apart from certain scenes like the tattoos being scratched off from Aamir’s chest – abdomen and a few physical fights resulting in twisting of necks, the violence is limited to about 15 mins. Far less brutal than the CCTV captures of the Mumbai terrorist attacks that was aired on almost all news channels.

Any flaws? Yes, the songs. About 2 songs too many in the first half; Behka Main and Aye Bachchu were unnecessary.

The performances were top notch. Asin proves to be a very good actress, quite unexpected as I wasn’t expecting much from her, after those promos. Good screen presence, bubbly and charismatic.

Aamir Khan is brilliant! An actor who can never disappoint, neither with his performances nor the overall quality of his movies. He is by far the best star-actor of the decade. What with a different variety of movies like Lagaan, Dil Chahta Hai, Rang De Basanti, Taare Zameen Par and now Ghajini! All very different, but brilliant nonetheless!

Overall, Ghajini is a must watch, a complete paisa vasool entertainer. A movie that should be experienced only on the big screen. Lastly, watch it for Aamir Khan and his sheer brilliance on screen. He is to Bollywood, what Sachin Tendulkar is to cricket. A legend!

Rating: ★★★★☆

Other Notes – The atmosphere in the movie hall was electrifying, something that I have never witnessed. Going by the audience reaction, the movie seems to have lived upto the expectations. People were glued to their seats till the very end.

Hope you all enjoy Ghajini. Post your Ghajini reviews below. Merry Christmas and a Very Happy New Year from the Indicine Team!

Update – What Aamir Khan expected actually happened. In an interview, he mentioned that if people walk out with his physique and 8 pack abs in mind, then the movie has failed to connect. So yeah, the movie did connect and Aamir’s looked great in Ghajini. In all the excitement, I missed Jiah Khan too, it was a forgettable performance. Her most important scene was when Aamir gets down from the scooter to fight the goons, Jiah’s expressions while trying to stop Aamir was hard to digest!

  • Ghajini is the best movie to come out in 2008 after Singh is King. Amir is the True King Khan of Bollywood and Akshay Kumar is the TRUE KING of Bollywood!!!

  • Like the many of them above who commented before me, I like the movie too. It was a refreshing change. I was a little disappointed though cos I had already seen memento could predict a few things, so that was a drawback for me. But if you haven’t watched memento (like most Indians) you will enjoy it.

That said, this movie had several loopholes which I could not ignore and reduces quality of entire experience.

    1. The climax was not at all convincing. When you know you are being attacked by a dangerous man why would you send your men one after the other???…..Aamir fights with at least 20 of them but they came individually. Unleash all of them on Aamir at once and bring him down.

    2. Ghajini is typical underworld don….well…..where were the guns in the climax?? that was too hard to digest :) all through the movie ghajini and his men use guns but they dont have it when needed the most. that was crap.

    3. It is too far fetched to believe that no one recognises one of the richest man in India. I know there was an explanation provided for it that he recently came to India from US but still not convincing. His name is on everyone’s lips but no one recognises him by face??…. Even in the later half of the movie, people still fail to recognise him. When aamir was beaten up by ghajini and kalpana mudered, this news would have made it too the headlines. at least then ppl should recognise him. very strange indeed.

    4. The lady cop who tell kalpana about her murder plot was absolutely lame. Can you get more stupid?? why would you call the victim and inform her, you should rather tip off the police that someone is going to be mudered. I couldn’t stop laughing at this goof up :D

These were just a few shortcomings which I thought were too bad…..but the positives outweigh the negatives….

the acting, direction and cinematography was just awesome. I loved the way asin carried her role. it was fun watching here innocence. aamir as usual did a splendid job. His physique was super for this movie, unlike sarfarosh where you could hardly tell he’s a cop ;)

    overall…its a must-watch. 3.5 out of 5 for this one.

  • HAPPY NEW YEAR 2009 2 ALL………

    @Siddharth:

    1. u sed no one recognised one of the richestman of india in the movie… now tell me do u recognise airtel companies owner by face… i guess u don’t… well if u do… most of us including me don’t… same way amir was not known by anyone out dere as it is he recently came 2 india frm u.s.

    2. the lady cop part… the police was wid ghalini… she was the only honest cop out dere… how can she tell the corrupt cops instead of informing kalpana…

    3. the climax… cum on now aftr all… dis is a bollywood movie… the hero is always given a preference… the indian audience likes villain 2 whacked out like hell n dat 2 widout any kinda guns…. hehehehe

still we all liked the movie as u hd already sed… hope amir continues the gud work… tc

  • What a piece of rubbish. Coming from the man who gave TZP and RDB, this is ridiculous. Now, at the beginning of the movie, the audience is told the character suffers from short term memory loss. But this is probably the first time that short term memory loss causes a person to behave like an animal, gnarl, snarl, roar. It is as if Aamir is trying to show off how well he can simulate animal voices. The film in itself is a scene-to-scene remake of the Tamil version, however, fails to grasp attention like the earlier one due to a shoddy screenplay. Some scenes though are decent. Overall, it is a poor fare.

1 / 5. Watch it only if you really want to.

Disclaimer: I am a big time Bollywood buff – a phrase now nearing extinction – and I watch all major – and many not so major – films that are released. My opinion above is from a neutral spectator’s point of view.

  • indicine@ ,what i meant was that when you are doing a south indian movie in hindi all hints and instances of south indian touch should not be present ..actually there is a style of making by our south indian people which is not universally appealing for instance the attire ..the way of speaking ..the character artists..for instance in chachi 420 the south indian touch was very prominent ..likewise dayaawan starring vinod khanna ..bombay was actually like awitness account of a hyderabadi tamil couple in bombay …so also guru lately..in ghajini also it was too apparent ..aamir should have made sure that all references to the tamil movie should be absent ..the fight with the cop was in extreme fast motion which is so very popular in south cinema…
asins non stop jabber to show sweetnesss was alsoa put off..up here in north we like to talk with pauses..but in south cinema they like to talk real fast maybe the language is so…

i dont think jias dancing on stage was an issue for me cos i myself am a doctor and have done lot of fashion shaows and dance competes for our college festival and our group took part in interstate festivals also….well that was long ago but i guess film mein chalta hai only i didnr understand why she was ready to put her life in danger for someone who came to the hospital for a cup of tea!!!
also why she fell in love with amir is not very clear….
my request to our makers please do not include the regional effects when you make a movie for international audience ..imagine if TZP were to be made in tamil and the actor wears lungis in the scenes …

  • why on earth can a medical student not be allowed to dance ??? is a medical student not a person ? what planet are you living in FATHIYA ??

indicine team: why do you even bother replying to this women ?? you are just encouriging her silly views and her argumentative attitude. you will never make her understand. and she will never be satisfied

I WILL NOW CALL MYSELF raj – 1 from now on, as there seems to be another raj on this forum, so to distinguish each other.

  • Raj, please end the topic on doctors, its been discussed in detail.

Now regarding Fathiya, she has different views and different opinions. Its perfectly alright as she is from a totally different country and the culture there cannot be the same as in India.

Anyone has the right to argue / dicuss about anything.. doesnt matter if its wise or silly, as long as its on topic.

But please stop abusing. If you dont like Fathiya, ignore her :)

  • No more discussion on Fathiya or Doctors.. The topic is Ghajini!

So Raj, looks like you loved the movie. How is it for repeat viewing? would you watch it again?

  • Hey Fathiya! Where is your srk? Have you seen the one week(8) boxoffice of Ghajin = 64.50 crore net.

    Ghajini = 64, 50 crore net (8 days)
Sing is Kinng = 44 crore net ( 7 days)
Rab ne bana di Jodi = 39, 65 crore net ( 7 days)

And who is the king of Bollywood ?

    1. Akshay Kumar = 1. Amir Khan

    2. Shah rukh Khan

    Srk time has gone.

And to earn money, Srk joins now Mumbai congress party.

    What a shame on Srk!

  • indicine team: yes, i have seen the film 3 times now. repeat viewing is fine. you dont get bored with this film, you discover something new every time you watch it. there is this magnetic energy about the film that keeps you glued even on repeat viewings !! you dont get bored. the energy is captivating even if you watch it many times over. now, that my friends is a mark of a true classic !
and indeed you do discover new angles in the film every time you watch it. so repeat viewing is recommended.
i got bored the first time i watched RAB NE BANA DI JODI. i watched it again just to see if my mood is any different, but unfortunately i did not find it much different on repeat viewing. same boring second half.

ghajini you will not get bored with. it may not be a great film, but it is highly watchable and the magnetic energy in the film does not die on repeat viewings.

surely aamir khan must be considered the badshah of bollywood considering the fact that he has given the biggest hit ever in bollywood history with ghajini ?

  • boxofficeguru:

do you know what the 7 day takings were of ghajini ?

also, i think you should compare the 7 day takings of the 3 films, just to get an idea of which actor is ruling the box office.

also, i understand your figures are wrong. because according to trade sources, the 7 day takings of RAB NE BANA DI JODI were 44.3 crores thereby beating singh is kinng.

    and i think ghajini’s 7 day takings were around 55 crores ?

so, the list should be as follows:

    ghajini – 55 crores

rab ne bana di jodi – 44.3 crores

singh is kinng – 43 crores

this means aamir should really be the leader of the pack and the badshah of bollywood, followed by shah rukh khan and then akshay kumar.

    correct me if iam wrong.

  • Hi All,
This is my point of view, i dont think Ghajini is a repeated viewing kindof movie. its just a above average movie just that the concept is good which again was taken frm Memento.
I have one thing to say guys if u catch some time plz watch Memento its a pleasure to watch the movie…

i knw this movie will break records but it cannot be put in the same category like the Sholay, HAHK or DDLJ, Gadar.
    Indicine what do you think?

  • Raj: Indicine Team have given u a reply.. but I’m sure that guys like u never stop it unless u see a doctor.. as you really need some treatment for your brain!

Go and see a doctor and the doctor will convince u that u can’t make carbon copies of the same humen everywhere.. you can’t let everyone in this world be the same and have the same mentality of yours! to make them love what u love.. hate what u hate.. believe in what u believe and only crazy people would think this way!! (If u were someone who reads all the comments on a page.. you would’ve received my answers about doctors dancing and about my thinking, obviously u never read.. u just want to pickup on people which u don’t like, therefore.. you picked up some lines without reading the rest and u have posted your lousy comment!)

So stop it Raj or Raj-1 ( u can’t fool me by saying that u r a different guy.. I know u very well!)

I am repeating a line again: You can’t consider people as stupid or mad because they have different views!! Mad people would think the way u do!

  • Stanley Johnson: You’ve answered your queires “yourself” on your last line by saying: (Growup, there’re billions diffferent opinions in this world. Accept it. Live with it) means that u agree that there’re different opinions.. so why didn’t u accept what I mentioned about doctors in our countries?!

As Indicine Team confirmed: I’m from a different country with different views. I wrote a line, u didn’t agree with it, u or some other ppl asked me a question, I answered, so we had a discussion on the subject e.g. doctors dancing on stages.. so if I answer your queries.. does this make me an arguementative person or trying to prove that I’m right?!
    S. Johnson: I think u don’t like “ladies” argue.. u love their silence.. that’s a feminine attitude which I hate the most.. I’m not these type of women.. a woman who a man slaps her on her face and then she keeps quiet or serve him a dinner after 5 minutes! No dear.. I’m not this one.. If u hit me.. I will hit u back.. that’s who I am.

Sorry Indicine Team: I wanted to end this subject, but people continue posting their comments.

  • The real Hero of this movie is the Director A.R.Murugadoss, A Brilliant yet an young director, should be younger to Aamir by more than a decade. Those who have seen his Tamil movies like “Ramana” would easily agree that Muragadoss is one of the finest directors in the Indian cinema Industry. Hats off Murugadoss for giving such a wonderful film to the Hindi Masses…Hope you will remake “Ramana” into Hindi with Aamir by giving this name in Hindi “PROFESSOR RAMANA”….

  • i watched the movie last night and didnt enjoy it at all. Its the same old revenge stories,,,nothing new except the performances of both Aamir and Asin. It had too much of gruesome violance ,some how depressing to see. I have seen movies like company and others but they were still better. No wow factor about Ghajini and i wonder why is there HYPE about it,,,,,,,the name of the movie is on villains name,,,,,WOW. They should have called it Anjali,,,,

  • ghajini 64.50 crores india net gross (1st week)

rab ne bana di 78 crores india net gross (3rd week)

this two can easily surpass singh is king 75 suceed.

srk amir and aksay dominate the boxoffice

  • Ghajini has re-written history all over. The film has done unbelievable business of nearly 65 crore nett in week one. All circuit records and most city centre records have been totally smashed. Apart from East Punjab most other circuits have seen Ghajini set records around 50% higher than the previous records. The second week is off to a steady start and the film may emerge an all time blockbuster over the next two weeks or so.

Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi has managed a good week of 9.50 crore nett despite the Ghajini wave. The film now has nett collections of over 78 crore in three weeks. The film is doing extremely well all over be it metroes or small centres. “BLOCKBUSTER”In terms of profits it is the biggest money spinner ever with Yash Raj Films likely to pocket a profit of over 50 crore for the film.

  • hey…ppl stop comparing GHAJINI with the TAMIL version….its 2yr old…more over its
easy for the Director to correct his mistakes from his earlier version..,and the fact
is that its difficult to recreate original version by SURYIA…but but its AAMIR the
PERFECTIONIST and he lived upto the expectations….alas the northies do knw what
we are doin in the south…..after all KOLLYWOOD is big as BOLLYWOOD….u know
when the next RAJINI movie is realising….except for the language barrier….and about the
technicians why do hav any doubt we too has the best of best AR RAHMAN is the greatest
example for it…..what else u ask????

  • Miss Fathiya, I think you’ve misunderstood. I didn’t agree with your evaluation that a doctor dancing on stage as in the movie as being unbelievable because it is the common practice in Medical Institutions in India and many countries abroad too. I didn’t agree with the view that it is not logical or as a flaw in the movie. And well, I don’t have to answer about my views on women or your nature. That you are argumentative can be seen in every comment you post. If you were male, I’d have the same response, perhaps a little bit more inflammatory. ! Serious. Just chill. Let anyone have their say in a subjective sense. If anyone makes a wrong assumption in an objective issue and you think you know better, let us know. I don’t think that the worth or appeal of any movie is objective. It is purely subjective. Same for which star is favoured. Money and earnings don’t give star status. Each person likes someone or the other. And well, good that srk joined some party other than the communists and the fascist Indian party(BJP). Happy New Year, esp you, Miss Fathiya.

  • Stanley Johnson: Well.. I might be wrong in your point of view, so let us end this subject ( and I didn’t understand what u really meant with the line u wrote about Shahrukh Khan)

And yes.. do u really think that I’m not giving ppl a chance to express their opinions?! Why did u think so?! I think ppl have no time to come online as they are very busy, but I got enough time to do so.. well I don’t know which way some of you think, but when I see someone visiting regularly any website or post daily even 10 comments or more.. I don’t consider them as dominant or sovereign! everyone has the right to express their opinions and post their comments as they wish.. who I am to stop them?!

When you or anyone ask me a question or point at me.. then there’s my answer.. if my answer is not convincing, so let it be.. I’m not insisting or saying that (I am right and you are wrong!) you might be right I might be wrong.. I don’t know

  • scenes btw amir n asin were really cute…..nw dats chemistry….”widout sex scenes n nudity”…u fall in love wid dem……i wish i get sm1 like him..:-)..

  • This seems to me an Indianised version of Bourne Identity + Supremacy + Ultimatum with a change in setting to a romantic one instead of a US-Russia backdrop.

  • mini: I don’t know who’s this guy you mentioned, but the question is: Did Shahrukh dance to entertain ppl and make them happy, for his friends.. or did he do it for money?

Many ppl think they know everything, many ppl jump to some wrong conclusions and say everything about actors out of hate, unless we don’t have evidence, we must not believe what we hear.. I know Mini u want to say that Shahrukh did it for money.. but even though.. I don’t believe what I read or hear about shahrukh coz he’s obvious, he’d never downgrade himself and dance in some ppl’s wedding for the sake of money ( does a man like him in a need of money to be donated to him in weddings?! so stupid to think: Yes!). If Karina did it, she was wrong, and I don’t think that she’d repeat it again, people do mistakes, don’t we?!

  • ‘Dancing at a wedding’ is not the right term to describe what SRK does at these events. What SRK does is, he MCs the reception parties post or before the high profile wedding – or for that matter, any special – ceremony, like the ones we see during the awards nights. It is not that he starts dancing next to the mandap. Also, what is so denigrating about this? He has dignity of labour. It is not like he is stealing someone’s bread and butter, or for that matter, preventing someone else from doing their job. People might have their own reservations about it, but they are free to do things the way they like, rather than speak lowly of others.

  • @rakesh:u r rite…even i dont thnk nythng is rong in dat..its his profession…to entertain ppl…dats absolutely fine..my point ws dat dancing on stages n parties is nt degrade thng to do as some ppl beleive..n i dnt hate srk bt dnt love him eithr…
@fathiya:laxmi mittal is the richest indian on planet.london based steel tycoon…n yes srk did 4 money coz dis his proffession…entertainment..

    end of the topic..thank u!!

  • ghajini has already crossed the 82 crores nett mark, in its 1 and a half week. which no other film has been able to do ever. by the end of its 2nd week it would have crossed at least 92 crores nett.

and i think by the end of the 3rd week it should be able to cross the 100 crores nett mark. and of course the film should continue on after that into its 4th week, 5th week etc, garnering more money.

no other film in bollywood history has been able to cross the 100 crore nett mark on its first release. look for ghajini to cross well over 100 crores nett and by doing so becoming the biggest bollywood hit ever and consequently ranking above evergreen films like dilwale dulhania le jayenge and hum aapke hain koun.

wow ! for a film which is nothing special, but just an above average film, the collections are mind blowing. such is the star power of aamir khan.

at the end of its run, the film should be in the top 3 of the all time hits list. ranking just below sholay and mughal-e-azam. but well above shah rukhs all time hit dilwale dulhania le jayenge and madhuri dixits all time hit hum aapke hain koun.
but remember sholay and mughal-e-azam have earned more money than ghajini siimply because of the re-releases in cinemas over the past number of years. as they have been on and off in the cinemas for the past 50 years (mughal-e-azam) and 30 years (sholay) they have earned more money than ghajono.

given ghajini the same number of years , the total collections of ghajini should way surpass the total collections of both these two films. ranking ghajini the biggest hit ever in bollywood history.

even if you look at the collections of these films in thier first cinema release (and indeed all other bollywood films in thier first cinema release), the collections were way below the collections of ghajini so far.
so if you go by this,. ghajini has beaten every other film in bollywood history including sholay and mughal-e-azam. so, if you consider the first release collections of every other bollywood film, ghajini comes no.1.
without a doubt, ghajini is the biggest hit in bollywood history, and is no.1.

surely this makes aamir khan the no.1 star in bollywood beating shah rukh khan by a huge margin ?

indicine team: why have you erased my previous comment from the forum ??? some parts of it were relevant to the discussion.
