Tubelight Day 2 Box Office Collection Update

Tubelight isn’t sustaining as well as the trade expected it to on Day 2 at the domestic box office, as the business of the film – until 3PM today – was down by around 5-10% from Friday. If business shows growth evening onwards at multiplexes, the Day 2 total of the film could get to around the same range as Friday. Else, it could end up with a total of less than 20 crore, which would not only suggest a negative trend, but would seal the fate of the film on the second day itself.

When compared to other ‘Pre Eid’ releases featuring Salman Khan, Bajrangi Bhaijaan had similar release circumstances as Tubelight, the jump in business from Friday to Saturday was more than 34% (Day 1 – 27.25 cr, Day 2 – 36.60 cr).

The film was carrying extraordinary word-of-mouth and inspite of strong competition from ‘Bahubali: The Beginning’, the Day 2 business of Bajrangi Bhaijaan showed nearly 40% growth at multiplexes – even though it was Pre-Eid.

The other film, 2014’s Kick, showed only 2% growth – but that film got a huge initial. Kick had collected 26.5 crore on its opening day, much more than the 21 crore Day 1 collections of Tubelight.

The trend on Saturday has made the 200 crore mark out of reach for ‘Tubelight’. The distributors of the film will suffer losses, as the film was purchased for a high price with the hope that it would recreate the magic of ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ and Salman’s presence would ensure a strong initial. So far, ‘Tubelight’ has disappointed on both counts, needing nothing less than a miracle Post-Eid to recover costs.
