Analysis of the Top 5 Highest Grossers in Bollywood since 2000, throws up some interesting stats. Action, Drama and Comedy (in that order) are the three most successful genres in the industry.

Next comes Salman Khan, who has featured in 37 films since 2000, out of which 12 films find a place in the list. Akshay Kumar has the same number of films in the Top 5, but hasn’t delivered the year’s highest grosser and has featured in many more films as compared to Salman.

Hrithik has played the lead in just 20 films in his career out of which 10 have been huge grossers. Aamir Khan is at number five with 8 films, only because he has acted in just 12 films in the last 14 years. Aamir’s ratio of 2:3 is the best amongst all actors.

  • I wish Hrithik didn’t sign those poor movies like Main Prem ki deewani hoon,Aap Mujhe Achche Lagne lage,Yaadein Etc.

  • It again proves that SRk is the king when it comes to consistency since majority of his movies have found a place in the top 5 irrespective of its wom and verdict

  • Aamir rules.. 8 movies on 12 in this list.. Aamir is the only actor to have broken the record for highest grossing movie 4 times!! Living legend

  • Great Article !!!
Its interesting to see that SRK was consistently there in top 3 since 2000 (except few exceptions) , which shows why every other star is being compared with SRK, when it comes to prove his(that star’s) stardom. Many may not digest, but for a long duration, SRK was a parameter for others stardom. If you are doing better than SRK, then congrats you are on the top. If you are lagging behind SRK, then still you have to go through a long journey. That was the theory. But at the same time , I will accept that now that theory is not effective that much, what it used to be between 2000-2008. The low collections of his movies (in 2010,2011,2012) as compared to others superstar’s movies made this belief somewhere weaker. But again he bounced back with CE and ended up with top 3 grosser of the year. I wish him a good luck for Fan and Raees and hope he will continue to be consistent like this, in future also.

Coming to others, it seems there was no such competition for SRK between 2000-2008. Obviously , competition was there but on the other side, there were a group of stars, who challenged SRK in a particular year and then went off. It happened till 2008, when one side it was SRK, but his contenders keep on changing. Like for few years, Hrithik dominated, then Sunny,Salman and Dino, they all shared the crown with SRK for one year each. The actual competition started from 2008 when Salman and Amir , both emerged rock steady on B.O. .Since then, they are a strong and consistent competitor for SRK or I will go one step ahead and will say that they have left SRK behind, in this box-office race.

One doubt I have here based on the above collections. Both Mangal Pandey and Maine pyar Kyun kiya collected around 28 cr each , that too in 2005. Still they are considered as flop, why?

  • SRk is the only actor who has a Hit movie in every mentioned category apart from Thriller(Don2 should infact belong to Thriller category) and Horror.

  • @Nipun : Read it again. It’s 42.5 cr and that too in 2002. In these 13 years, inflation rate has been grown up drastically . So that 42 cr is indeed a good collection and the difference between Devdas and second highest (Raaz) was 20 cr, which shows that Devdas was widely accepted by the audiences.
Also, please note that with only 22 cr collections, Raaz was considered a big hit of that time, so Devdas being the highest grosser is fairly justified .

  • Only 4 thriller films have been there, all had been before 2005.
It tells us how difficult is to give a big grosser with thriller films which is emraan hashmi ‘s forte.
Big grossers have been all masala,rom-coms,drama.
Emraan hashmi is by far the biggest actor to star in thriller films.

  • Great Article. If you can change No entry instead of Partner in salman’s highest grossing list.

@Indicine! Look forward for more such articles soon. By the way, I had sent you a suggestion list in the Q and A section, I hope you guys have read it ! If yes, it would be great if you could reply your views or post it somewhere about it so that other readers can also take note of it.

  • if you will look closely its shahrukh all the way..who tops..only aamir has better ratio dan him n one shd also consider the meagre no. of releases he have…only 12 in 15 years… so he can be placed second
yeah but in last five years salman has been more consistent than shahrukh no doubt..but ultimately shahrukh will topple him dis year n in the following years In sha Allah

  • Nice article!!!

Shows how Hrithik dominated salman and aamir till 2008.
Since then he has gone underrated compared to khans, health issues, personal life and bc boi have’nt done good to his cause.
But I hope he will get a good release date for Mohenjodaro and deliver an epic romantic saga..

  • It would be difficult for any young actor apart from Ranbir to find a place in the list for the next five years

  • Akki has done well too considering he does 4 films a year…
Coming 4 times eliminates chances of delivering the highest grosser of the year completely.
Though he could have done that with welcome in 2007 but aamir’s TZP clashed with it..OSO was lucky to get through!!

  • @Goutam: Love reading your comments mate! Bang on you are again on the above point. You have a keen observation, same as me on this scenario or on any matter involving SRK and the other khans for that matter. IT is so true that there was hardly any competition for SRK during the 2000-2008 period. These two other khans only started impacting the masses after 2008 and have been doing it for the last 6 years now – GOOD for them!

But, SRK has been the most consistent among everyone and it shows again. There is nothing that this guy needs to prove to any faggot. People say the last six years the other ‘two khans’ have gone past SRK, I agree, but they need to see that these two were literally lagging behind the period when SRK was dominating. No matter what superstars come and go and ‘other two khans’ will fade off soon – SRK will be SRK, people would still make comparisons with him! Period.

  • no entry should have been there in place of partner…
and ratio-wise the ranking is like
    1 amir- 8/12= .66
    2 srk-17/27= .65
    3 hrithik-10/20= .50
    4 salman-12/37= .33
    5 ranbir- 3/11= .25
    6 akshay- 12/58= .20

  • Year 2000 was pathetic for Bollywood as failures like Josh, Refugee managed to enter Top 5!!!

Rest all years have only hits or better in the Top 5

  • Akshay making too much movies and still have equal no. of films in top 5 as that of Salman
who said he is not a superstar

  • one thing to note.if observe srk delivered hits only wid yrf n karan johar since 2000-2007.if dhoom 3 was successful due to yrf den srk survived also due to yrf 1998-2007.after 2007 he became a big star who does not need these banners n can give hits without them.d biggest proof is srk is unable to break his own record if mnik in overseas despite trying for 5 years.he need kjo to break records in overseas.

  • Yaa, that’s why he is known as “King Khan” and “Badsha” of Bollywood. The name itself mean ‘ruling’ the Bollywood.

  • intresting article, Thank you indicine. Where is boxoffice prediction of 2015 movies? Its the most awaited article of your site. Please post it soon.
    Thanks

  • @Indicine RNBDJ was the highest grossing movie of all time before Ghajini broke its record. Then why isn’t it considered an All Time Blockbuster

  • PK 1st movie to have 150+ Distributor share.. PK’s Distributor share > All SRK’s movies lifetime except CE. PK Highest Grosser Ever
