Shenaz Treasurywala’s Open Letter to PM, Bachchan, SRK, Salman and Aamir!

Dear Narendra Modi, Amitabh Bachchan, Sachin Tendulkar, Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan and Anil Ambani,

I am writing to YOU specifically because you are the most powerful and influential MEN in our country.

I am writing to you as a woman who grew up in a middle class family in Mumbai.

I am writing to YOU for HELP!

My parents may not like me saying this. I apologize to them if they are reading but this is NOT MY SHAME. It’s THIER SHAME.

My first experience with the opposite sex, was when I was just 13 and groped by a man (never saw his face but will never forget his hand) while walking in the vegetable market with my mom. She had just given me the worst haircut and as an angry teenager I was upset at her and was lagging behind as she walked ahead. I still remember what I was wearing. It was her dress, mustard with flowers and little bow in the front. How I hate that dress! As if, it was the dress’s fault.

I was shocked at first. Speechless. He disappeared. I just stood there. Tears started pouring out of my innocent eyes. I told my mom who went mad screaming in the market but who knew where that man disappeared to. I still remember the dirty feeling I had and the number of times I showered in my grand-mom’s bathroom after. That feeling never went away.

Since then it was non-stop. I would try to articulate this to my parents and while my mom understood, my dad and uncles told me I was imagining it. Maybe they just couldn’t deal with it. CAN YOU?

When I was 15, I started going by train and bus to St. Xaviers’ College. I was groped and touched and from all angles and this was just how I grew up. Not Just Me but MOST INDIAN WOMEN who don’t have the luxury of cars and drivers.

As a teenager I would dream of and still sometimes dream that I had a machine gun and could kill all the men who tried to grope me. A very disturbing dream for a kid, don’t you think?

I got my first assignment as a model in the FYJC and I had to go to screen-tests straight from college. So I had to dress nice, didn’t make it any easier. I specifically remember the time I went for an audition in a red body suit and a black long skirt with slits. It was HELL! I never wore that again. As if it was the dress’s fault.

I developed ways to defend myself, I always carried a bag in front of me, my fist was always clenched, I always turned around every 20 seconds to check who was behind me and a few times I slapped men who touched me, I got slapped back many times too. Sometimes saved by the public, MOST TIMES NOT.

My mom begged me not to pick fights with men who touched me, she was afraid of acid being thrown at me or that somebody someday would hurt me badly. She is STILL AFRAID and today she told me not to take an UBER to my meeting tomorrow. Hell ya. BAN UBER! Make everyone take responsibility for this.

My sister got into Sophia’s college, we were all excited. She went by bus but the first day she came home, she sobbed traumatized. A man had put his hand in her tee-shirt through her sleeve, the entire bus ride. She just froze. She was a kid too and wasn’t equipped to even understand this. I was LIVID. I’m sorry sis for telling the world this, please don’t stop speaking to me. IT’S NOT Our Shame. It’s THEIRS!

One of my friends in college was RAPED on the train on her way home in the ladies compartment. She was sick and was going home in the 11:15 break. There was nobody in the first class compartment going back to Bandra at that time, it was a superfast meaning it didn’t stop at most stations. He raped her and then jumped off after using her scrunchy (hair tie) to wipe himself. She was the only one on the train and had to limp her way back to her home in Bandra, bleeding profusely. She was just 16. This she felt was her shame so she did not say anything to anyone.

BUT IT ISN’T HER SHAME, it’s THEIR SHAME.

My mom accompanied me to Hyderabad on a shoot once. In churi bazaar, a cyclist groped My MOM. My dear respected and lovely MOM.

Sorry Mom, IT’S NOT Our Shame, It’s THEIR SHAME.

Why am I telling you my personal story?

Well first I want all women to Speak Up.

Let’s make this our MOTTO-

It’s not OUR SHAME, it’s THEIR SHAME.

Who are “THEY”?

“THEY” ARE THE MEN IN OUR COUNTRY.

Not just the rapists and the sexual offenders and gropers but also our Fathers (sorry dad) and Uncles and Brothers and MOVIE STARS AND CRICKETERS AND POLITICIANS for not SAVING US or PROTECTING US by insisting and protesting for the LAWS TO CHANGE and Rapists and Gropers to BE PUNISHED SEVERELY!

Why do we as women have to feel so threatened? WHY has there been no severe action taken? This has gone on for years now. Not just in Delhi but all over our country and yes even in BOMBAY OR MUMBAI OR Whatever the hell you want to call it! It’s NOT SAFE. NO!

My biggest fear ever since I was kid and even today when I walk back home at night from yoga or when I take a rickshaw from a friend’s home is being RAPED. I still feel that fear. I am still am on guard. I still fantasize of having that MACHINE GUN.

In the past 4 years I have been living and working half in India and half in New York and let me tell you I have walked the streets of Harlem, the Bronx and Brooklyn (perceived as the most dangerous in NYC) at3am after parties in short skirts and felt safer than I feel in Bandra at 10 pm on a quiet road fully covered. WHY??

Let’s talk about Delhi our Capital. I was there 2 days ago and the day of the rape. I wanted to go out and walk by India Gate and admire our great monuments but could I?! Why??

What good are all your speeches in the US or Japan or AUSTRALIA- NAMO, if no woman can walk freely in the streets even in broad daylight by herself in the CAPITAL OF OUR COUNTRY. Isn’t this a SHAME? SHAME ON YOU SIR.

This is our NO1 issue. FIX THIS before anything else.

This is a SHAME. And it’s YOUR SHAME. You are now RESPONSIBLE FOR US.

I beg all of you fine gentlemen that I have addressed to help change the LAW.

You are powerful men. I say, SHAME and PUNISH THE Gropers and Sexual offenders severely. KILL THE RAPISTS.

I won’t ask for public castration which is what I want and all the women want because I know this is unrealistic and things move SO DAMN SLOW in our FINE NATION.

All I ask for is the -Death Penalty Please. NOW! QUICK!

If that’s too hard or will take too long then at least LIFE IMPRISONMENT.

Put them away forever.

Why was this man who had raped twice before out on bail?

And then given a drivers license? YES, BAN UBER TOO. Make everyone responsible.

I’m ready to do anything. I’m not a big enough celeb but you Sachin Tendulkar, Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan, Sharukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Anil Ambani SIRS- need to speak up as MEN ( you are the men with the power)

SAVE US!

Please demand the Death Sentence for the Rapists.

NO BAIL. Just Death.

Superstars I beg you, please take a stand. Use your Superstardom and Power and MONEY and save the women of our country. SAVE US!

I urge you to protest or go on a fast or do something DRASTIC so people take notice, the government wakes up and CHANGES the LAW so these men are terrified to touch us.

Death to rapists. No bail. Just death.

Imagine Amitabh Bachchan Sir, Aamir Khan, Salmaan Khan, Sachin Tendulkar, Anil Ambani- if you went on a fast or walked to the Rashrtrapati In Delhi. If you, took this stand and made this YOUR NO 1 issue, how much change there would be?!

Why should we as women feel so unsafe in our motherland?!

Why should we as women be terrified and on guard all the time.

Why was this man out on bail after committed two rapes already ?

Make an Example Of Him.

Any man who even touches a woman should be imprisoned for life.

Be strict, make examples of these men, scare those who dare to touch us.

SCARE THEM BY MAKING AN EXAMPLE OUT OF THEM.

SAVE US, Save your mother, daughter, sister please!

This is NOT OUR SHAME.

THIS IS YOURS.

SHAME ON YOU.

Don’t sleep till you – SAVE YOUR WOMEN!

With all respect,

Shenaz Treasurywala

  • Very sad state. We should not stop just by sympathetic with the victims of this crime. We should act now. Enact strict laws to punish the criminals. Educate from the primary school level about this sin. Till we do that and change the society we should not boast about any progress in our country.
Development of a nation sans Humanity is worthless!!!

  • How can one give quick death sentence without proper trial and evidence?

What if that person is really innocent?

Can you bring them back from dead if they are found not guilty?

Now a days, everybody wants instant justice.

  • Shenaz i salute what have said…..IT AINT UR SHAME….IT’S MINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
But as all stories go in this pityful country…………..ur story is gonna be juicy news for media hawks for the next 2 weeks…it’s gonna be on every news header…..the story everyone is gonna discuss….and then ventually sidelined…..this is the state of affairs in our country…..all that is gonna happen is ul get a million likes on facebook and a bunch of followers on twitter…..thats all thats gonna happen….iv got my sisters who i worry for everyday when they leave the house…why sisters????? iv got friends of the opposite sex…iv got my MOTHER………….things need to change…………this country need more people like you….and less like me…..COZ IT”S MY SHAME>>>NOT URS………….GODBLESS!!!!!!!!!!

  • Sooo True.. All indian Girls facing this problem everyday
And many times i too felt I wish I can kill the man who is trying to touch me..
Plz Plz do something for this…

  • This is happening every where in India.I am 60+now,it happened with me too in college, university and even after my marriage. Now I am protecting my daughter from indecent approaches of men.It is tough to fight with them.Politicians and stars can help in a very limited way.We should work with parents in villages, cities and mohallas to educate with their sons for better and just behavior towards their fellow sisters.May be we can see the result after 5 years.

  • Full support to Shenaz.. it’s time for renaissance in India and women should come forward and protest against injustice

  • As a matter of fact how she described i agree with it too.. but don’t make female that powerful that their one word can ruin our innocent male’s entire life… women empowerment is good but do it in both sides… or women will be out of control.. and that can ruin our culture and our indian image..i am not telling about all women …..but there are also women who will therentain men that i will case you like this and that then no one will listen to you .. and then he gets jail ….is it justice..?

i see everyday satya me bijayte but i never saw a single episode for man in our country .. as i know they also suffer from a lot of things.. but they don’t show it because man seen as strong..and people may not watch …. but when society is your rival how he can be strong..?

last thing i wanaa say i was also to thinking about to write a letter to modi ji … but she already did..i appeal to make a man empowerment organisation too.. so they also can have the power to say something in their side too… media please show both side matter in any case… don’t just always support women… cause media is most powerful in influencing people..

  • I am from Pakistan. I lived in Egypt for 2 yes and I learnt something interesting. There is an unwritten code which protects women. If a woman gets groped she screams and yells and all the men around come and beat the guy up. Something women even use this unfairly but I saw girls alone taking a taxi back from shopping from Cairo downtown at 11.00 pm on weekends and rarely was there an incident where a woman had to bear the brunt of being groped.

  • Sheam myself first i walking those friend not respect the women, & and full baking up sehenazz to the death sentence of repist

  • I myself have seen my female frnds and colleagues being stared at and often being eve-teased specially during late night parties.
We confront the situation at that time but what happens when they are alone, Shenaz all the people don’t have courage like you.
They suppress their anger and let the matter go which ultimately gives a step ahead to the devil.
If all the women start taking action against each offender then there will be fear among them.
In a recent article i read that a girl in Mumbai reported complaint in a police station, the police told her not to lodge a fir rather they will give him some beating and let him go.
Police themselves don’t appreciate sexual assault cases to be registered.
Taking about Gujarat, being a dry state and tobacco free state there is comparatively low cases of eve-teasing, harassment, rape etc.
Girls drink dope and lose sense thus giving an open invitation to rapists.
Best way is to ban all drugs alcohols and all narcotics and severe punishment to selling or even consuming these must be levied.
Talking about death sentence it’s not a great idea i completely agree with Neeraj, there are high possibility of misusing of these rights.
We all must unite to fight against this today it was some others sister or daughter tomorrow it could be ours.
Lets make it a nation wide protest.

    – Croxgenius

  • Thanks Dear Shehnaz for being so bold to paint a big painful & shameful picture of our society. We have beasts roaming in buses, trains, lanes on roads everywhere, who may have sisters & even wives but they get pleasure by traumatizing our sisters on public places. No law can change this only a proper education can change this mental disesae. It is responsibilty of parents & teachers to conduct clasess & coach the boys from their childhood & make them understand how it traumatises a sister —-
    SAI BLESS

  • Hats off to this girl. With all due respect I support you. I too have faced situations like this when I was just 7 believe me it is scary.

  • I honestly believe Castration is a better punishment than Death. Death is quick, they should be punished for the rest of their lives just like the girl is punished psychologically. Might as well add a “RAPIST” tattoo on the forehead also. Death is just too easy.

  • Straight from the heart ; convincingly expressed This is how every woman in India must feel with the type of bastards let loose in our society. There are enough laws. Problem is implementation. Our judicial system needs overhaul. Our advocates are the most third rate. Judiciary at lower level is not only very slow but corrupt. Police is insensitive , slow . unresponsive and purchasable. If Modi govt with its brute majority can not bring about change NOW , it will probably never happen ! But will this ever happen at all? I doubt it very much because how can a Parliament where 80 % of its members are criminals and 40 % themselves have rape cases against them ,ever pass such a legislation ? Hope for a miracle to happen Shenaz ; till such time the law makers remain criminals, our future remains bleak.

  • @surinder:
u mean to say that if the girl was not drunk she could have defended herself?? If a girl can defend herself against the physically stronger man, then rapes would never happen!

  • Shehnaaz, my heart, indeed every pore of my existence is in harmony and sympathy with your grief and lamentation ! The lust of a beast and his dastardly act has cast its shadow on my family for over a decade…. ceaseless curses emanating from the deepest recesses of my psyche, and passage of TIME have helped heal a little ! ….My observation is that lust gets compounded by a weak state of mind….and what makes the mind weak but ALCOHOL and DRUGS!!! So friends ( YES.. GUYS AND GALS !) , if you want to avoid the pitfall of lust and inappropriate behaviour (remember even the best, the most gallant and most chivalrous amongst us are potentially capable of this, once the mind does not belong to us !!), control, control , control your abuse of ALCOHOL and DRUGS….. Wonder why the Govt does not see ALCOHOL as a threat and social evil as it does SMOKING ! Friends, if you are AWARE and MINDFUL, then you will hopefully avoid sex crimes…!!!! MEDITATE to gain mind control !!! I myself have not imbibed a drop of alcohol once I realised its DANGER, and my Art of Living wisdom has helped !

  • She is right. These so called men should come out from their comfort zones and raise their voices to save our women. Instead of asking them to cover up properly, these moral police should demand death for rapists. Jai Hind

  • Does not matter How Women Dresses , she should have rights to wear any thing or nothing(if She wants to) but that does not prove that she wants to sleep with men , as far as rapes are concerned there has be stronger law and active police,,,, There was a Hindi Movie Dialogue :- ” Hamari Police Agar Chahey toh kisi ki chappel chori na ho Mandir ke aage se , Rape toh badi baat hai . In Countries like US, Europe, Australia Police is highly paid and well trained hence they are doing their job and among kids honesty is taught in USA, Europe, and other developed nation, It should be part of our education system how to respect women that part we are still relying on Parents here parents teach nothing but how to become number 1 in every race at any cost and that is the main cause of Social degradation .

  • Ranjani Arvind

this #ShenazTreasurywala letter is quite valid and all that, but cant help but see it as a publicity stunt for her movie releasing today.

    Sonali Cherian

Extremely confused abt this. Seems like a plea but also is it just another publicity stunt? #ShenazTreasurywala

    Devaiah Bopanna

I’m with #ShenazTreasurywala. But I’d have respected her more if she didn’t pen this tearjerker of a letter 2 days before her movie released.

Not sure which side I lean on on this whole if #ShenazTreasurywala open letter is a publicity stunt or not. Bottom line, stunt or not #ShenazTreasurywala has everyone talking about an issue that matters if she gets public attention frm it, why not

    Sara Hassan

Even if its a publicity stunt, what she says is VALID. Ask any woman who has taken public transport in India. #ShenazTreasurywala

  • its a common thing……aur bhul jao ye band hoga……bhagwan k avtr ye rok nai pai…..I only can say as you sow so shall you reap …..western culture na bhugto ab …..koi golden age nai anne wali…..life time imprison to h fir b kyu nai ruk rahi vardat……..aur bul jao prostituton legal kare……jo iska ilaj hai…..par iske disadvantage jyada h……..

  • Simple contraction follows,
    Control ours Hormones…..
Don’t see any girls dirty mind expect ours wife and GF
    Be a insaan…..
Behaving like our sister any girls…..

  • There are cases in India where women too try to take advantage of law. If you see the Haryana sisters case, they both are taking undue advantage of indian law and cheating innocent law. So hanging such men will not save the situation. there are many such cases where men are victimized in the name of law.

People give example of how safe they feel in US and UK. both these country has similar law as in India. What changes does changing the law will bring.I believe its the mentality which should be changed. Some coucelling group should be made. Girls should be more equipped to protect themselves. public shoul be made more responsible. Fear of law should prevail and peopke should not take it si lightly.

I am honestly not sure what the solution should be for this issue but its high time more serious thought to be given on this point now.

  • No fear of law & system……encourage this kind of incident………….Corrupt law makers & coward society ………….This will be never change ……………….It doesn’t matter who will raise the voice against this till our society will not take initiative. If someone try to oppose than system will make his/her life hell.So need raise this issue by our so called TRP oriented corporate media & social media.
Only making strict laws is not enough. They must punish as fast as possible

  • Shenaz, glad you’ve brought this constant harassment of girls/ladies to the public.
Did any of those addressed acknowledge?
Rapists must be put to death. If not , they come out & give a repeat performance.
Difficult to penalize gropists as they cleverly melt into the crowd & are difficult to catch.
If caught they should be put away for life ( which really amounts to 20 yrs.) so they are off the streets & cannot harass other innocents young girls.
A shame that the minor who was the worst offender in the Nirbhaya rape got off almost scot free. He too deserves to hang.
The law needs to be changed & changed fast. Before more girls/women are put through this suffering for no fault of theirs except that they happened to be girls/women.

  • All these Celebes r even corrupted they don’t even give a dam..!! N y should we beg for our safety its our right if these rules will not be brought under consideration then we will find our own way to protect ourselves. We will make it difficult to breath for each n every rapist n each n every men who will even try to touch us . We will not at all feel bad by spoiling there face by acid if they even tried to spoil our life. It will not take even a sec for us to make there life worst than hell . Coz it’s their shame not ours..!!!

  • salute to stupids like you, its just a publicity stunt before her new movie releases, why didn’t she addressed the letter to PMO and why did she released it on facebook?
