The box office clash between Shah Rukh Khan’s untitled film and Akshay Kumar’s Toilet Ek Prem Katha (Toilet:EPK) will be the talking point for the next few months.
On paper, it looks one-sided. The untitled romantic film has a much bigger star cast with one of the biggest crowd-pullers in the industry (SRK), one of the most popular female stars (Anushka Sharma), well-known director (Imtiaz Ali), big budget and the music is expected to be a strong point too (Imtiaz-Pritam).
With Toilet:EPK, Akshay is the only known face. The female lead has appeared in one film (Dum Laga Ke Haisha) and editor-turned-director Shree Narayan Singh directed 2012’s Yeh Jo Mohabbat Hai which noone watched.
Yet, it’ll be the SRK-Imtiaz film that has all to lose and very little to gain – because business will now be divided between two films and the biggie won’t be able to take full advantage of the 5-day extended weekend.
For ‘Toilet:EPK’, the calculated risk that the makers have taken could prove to be a tactical masterstroke.
Reasons:
- Medium budget: Much like ‘Rustom’ last year, Toilet:EPK has been made on a controlled budget. Recovery will not be difficult if it turns out to be a well-made film. The fact that the makers are willing to take on a big-film, could also be an indication that they are confident of the film they’ve made.
- Ramzan release averted: Toilet:EPK was previously scheduled to release three weeks before ‘Tubelight’ and a week before ‘Raabta’. There was very little breathing space for a content-driven film to grow and perform. More so since the audience is known to save-up money for a event Salman Khan film during EID. The Ramzan period, when the muslim section of the audience do not come out to watch films, has been avoided too.
- GST: The ‘Goods and Service Tax’ will come into effect from July 1 2017. It’s expected to bring down the all-India entertainment tax levels, so Toilet:EPK will benefit from this as compared to June 2 release.
- Clash-publicity: We have seen in the past that clashes can prove to be beneficial, especially for the smaller film. Both films will get almost equal media coverage.
- Swacch Bharat: Toilet:EPK is based on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Swacch Bharat Abhiyaan, which is a popular social cause amongst the youth. It’s most talked about during the Independence Day period. The film could also get tax-exemption, which will give its business a big boost.
From SRK’s point of view, there are very few positives. It was one of the biggest weekends of the year. A solo release would’ve probably meant 125 crore plus in the first 5-day weekend itself. But now with screens and shows divided between two major films, the release circumstances will be very similar to the ‘Raees vs Kaabil’ clash.
The SRK-Imtiaz film will comprehensively win the first day and weekend, but since it’s a big film, it has to perform at a much high level throughout to become SRK’s first clean hit in nearly 3 years.
One cannot avoid clashes since there are only 52 weeks in a year, and almost 200 films release annually. August 11 was always Akshay’s preferred weekend. The audience will be divided for sure, and so will the money.

There are 4500-4800 Screens in India ..In Both Propositions [Clash/No Clash] TEPK Would have got almost similar no. of Screens i.e 2300-2500..AIRLIFT Got 2100 [Solo] ..However now it has a chance to benifit from the clash as It would be a Hot Property and it would get the Mass National Appeal and would become more HOTTER than it would have ,had it released SOLO.TEPK might Gain/Similar screens in terms of CLASH.
However In case of REHNUMA..It would have easily Got 4000+ Screens as SOLO but now at Maxm it would Get 2500-2900 in case of a CLASH.

So As a Whole…TEPK Has to Gain in 90% than being a SOLO..cuz it would get the Much Needed Publicity that it requires to get Converted From a Niche Film to a Common Topic in Every Hold.However REHNUMA has many points to Lose from Itself if not from any Other Film/Star in case Clash is not averted cuz A Total of 270-300Cr [Lifetime Combined] is Possible in the Independence Day Period .REHNUMA Would have Easily got 200Crs easily even if it would have been a AVERAGE.But Now in Clash it has to be Very Good to Extraordinary
as TEPK would college atleast 80-100 Crs given..Akshay Kumar Past Script Sense..and MAKERS are Confident of the Product ..thats why they are Clashing.So If TEPK Well Made a Min. of 120Crs..That Leaves 150-180 Max. For REHNUMA but that too if that is also Well Made.
Although INDEPENDENCE DAY Weekend belonged to Akki as he Booked the Date First..and Changed CRACK by TEPK..its upto makers of REHNUMA to decide whether they wanna take the Risk as RISK is not only AKSHAY KUMAR but [High Budget and Reduced Screen of REHNUMA] OR Take nay New DATE.

For I know a times some factors mostly media created do happen when older superstars clash with younger ones especially callibre of Mighty influential but crook producers eg Kjo. Srk lost to Ranveer Ajay to Shivaay but hell no it means anything about stardom rather content and media critics remarks.
Akki is a fantastic actor especially after rejuvenating himself to low budget patriotic or franchise movies. What is fact is when two major superstars clash and how media bbash at one like Kaabil Sjivaay Mohenjo. Akshah should chill for now if he wants a 100% streak of hits in 1.5 yearz. For Shhah Rukh what I understand is that Srk will never clash with these superstars below.

And yes if ur global star has 3.7 billion fans then Akshay has even more. His films don’t perform extremely outside India bcz of his frequent non-holiday offbeat releases with only known face worldwide n Srk releases always in a favourable period with huge banner masala genre huge actress big director n huge promotions.
