The box office clash between Shah Rukh Khan’s untitled film and Akshay Kumar’s Toilet Ek Prem Katha (Toilet:EPK) will be the talking point for the next few months.
On paper, it looks one-sided. The untitled romantic film has a much bigger star cast with one of the biggest crowd-pullers in the industry (SRK), one of the most popular female stars (Anushka Sharma), well-known director (Imtiaz Ali), big budget and the music is expected to be a strong point too (Imtiaz-Pritam).
With Toilet:EPK, Akshay is the only known face. The female lead has appeared in one film (Dum Laga Ke Haisha) and editor-turned-director Shree Narayan Singh directed 2012’s Yeh Jo Mohabbat Hai which noone watched.
Yet, it’ll be the SRK-Imtiaz film that has all to lose and very little to gain – because business will now be divided between two films and the biggie won’t be able to take full advantage of the 5-day extended weekend.
For ‘Toilet:EPK’, the calculated risk that the makers have taken could prove to be a tactical masterstroke.
Reasons:
- Medium budget: Much like ‘Rustom’ last year, Toilet:EPK has been made on a controlled budget. Recovery will not be difficult if it turns out to be a well-made film. The fact that the makers are willing to take on a big-film, could also be an indication that they are confident of the film they’ve made.
- Ramzan release averted: Toilet:EPK was previously scheduled to release three weeks before ‘Tubelight’ and a week before ‘Raabta’. There was very little breathing space for a content-driven film to grow and perform. More so since the audience is known to save-up money for a event Salman Khan film during EID. The Ramzan period, when the muslim section of the audience do not come out to watch films, has been avoided too.
- GST: The ‘Goods and Service Tax’ will come into effect from July 1 2017. It’s expected to bring down the all-India entertainment tax levels, so Toilet:EPK will benefit from this as compared to June 2 release.
- Clash-publicity: We have seen in the past that clashes can prove to be beneficial, especially for the smaller film. Both films will get almost equal media coverage.
- Swacch Bharat: Toilet:EPK is based on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Swacch Bharat Abhiyaan, which is a popular social cause amongst the youth. It’s most talked about during the Independence Day period. The film could also get tax-exemption, which will give its business a big boost.
From SRK’s point of view, there are very few positives. It was one of the biggest weekends of the year. A solo release would’ve probably meant 125 crore plus in the first 5-day weekend itself. But now with screens and shows divided between two major films, the release circumstances will be very similar to the ‘Raees vs Kaabil’ clash.
The SRK-Imtiaz film will comprehensively win the first day and weekend, but since it’s a big film, it has to perform at a much high level throughout to become SRK’s first clean hit in nearly 3 years.
When the real megastars are busy topping their 300 crore domestic games, one is still struggling with 150 crore and BO clashes. That’s just not fair. Akki please reconsider the fate of our king if this clash happens.

It is a myth that a SRK film never loses out in a clash. In 2001, his own production , Asoka, clashed with Indian (Sunny Deol). Indian completely beat the opposition and was the comfortable winner by huge margin.

i like both akki and srk and personally hope both of their films turns out to be clean hits which i am sure it will be good luck to these both self made superstars.
I have always said clashes on non holiday do not make any sense . This will be SRK’s 4th clash in this decade . Now I will put my money on TEPK . Akshay is having a terrific form with 2 Superhits and 2 Hits in the last 13 months . SRK is going through a dull phase since the last 3 years . Another important advantage for TEPK as it has been made on a reasonable budget so the recovery will be very easy . SRK – Imtiaz Ali film is looking expensive as it has been shot in Amsterdam, Prague, Lisbon and Budapest . TEPK is based on Swacch Bharat Abhiyan which is a very important issue especially among youngsters . This should appeal single screen audiences . There are high chances that it will get tax free status in BJP states such as Maharashtra, Gujarat, UP, Jharkhand, Goa, Manipur, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, MP, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh . This will give a huge boost to the lifetime collections . SRK has made some terrible choices in this decade such as Ra.One, JTHJ, Dilwale, HNY and Fan . On the other hand Akshay’s script sense has improved by leaps and bounds such as OMG, S26, Holiday, Baby, Airlift and Jolly LLB 2 . So this clash looks extremely interesting . This will be Akshay’s 4th Independence Day release in this decade after OUATIMD, Brothers and Rustom . If this clash happens it will be the 5th time between SRK and Akshay . !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It’s Win win situation for AKSHAY KUMAR. Nothing to loose
Toilet does not look like a film which will take an opening at the box office.. If jolly LLB 2 opened below the mark inspite of being a sequel then what will happen with this film..it will get a lot of publicity during its release but Akshay Kumar’s star power in these kind of films takes a beating..Add to that, he is clashing with shahrukh khan who took a film like Fan to 19 crore on day one..
Imtiyaz ali films are known to have popular music, if this album turns out to be a chartbuster then even a 30% opening for Toilet on morning shows will be an uphill task..The lifetime results of srk films are not up to mark but his initial stardom just dosent seems to have taken a hit..he has already managed two 20 crore opening days with clashes on a non holiday, i expect this film to be his third..
Regarding toilet, it will need a superb trailer and a strong backing from the promos and may be music also to open in double digits or else the makers should be happy if they manage to beat the figures of Kaabil on day one..

@Zuheeb Bhaijaan go and get your facts right… Kaabil proved to be much liked and loved movie than Raees. Kaabil had an opening of 10.43 Cr not 7.5 Cr despite lesser screens 40% and not a masala movie (with mass appeal) like Raees. Despite that it was Kaabil which turned out to be better film and bigger HIT in every aspect (leave aside rave reviews of critics and moviegoers alike). SRK was looking like a dwarf against HR.
SRK played dirty game with screen counts (60% screens) and could get initial advantage for 1st week but rest is history. Kaabil outstriped Raees in every subsequent weeks coz of it’s content and better packaging. If screen counts were 50-50 then Raess (with very high promos) wud have been folded under 16-17 Cr and Kaabil 14-15 Cr on opening day itself and lifetime for Kaabil would have been 160 Cr and Raees 110 Cr.
SRK is a fading star now…he is failing continusouly in India and the fact is that (we all know)- SRK can never challenge Salman or Aamir in current times so he tries to clash with juniors that itself is a sign of defeat for SRK. SRK’s selection of movies are very poor- CE, Raess, HNY, Dilwale all have been bullshits on content part. Even people change their channels if these movies are aired on TV.
Its tough time for SRK and Akki has delivered a hard punch now on SRK’s face.
