Rocket Singh Movie Review

After Chak De India, the expectations are high from the men behind the classic – Shimit Amin (director) and Jaideep Sahni (writer) – who return with Rocket Singh – Salesman of the year, stars Ranbir Kapoor, Gauhar Khan, Shazahn Padamsee, D Santosh, Mukesh Bhatt, Prem Chopra and others.

The movie is about Harpreet Singh Bedi (Ranbir Kapoor), a below average student in school and college, who takes up marketing as his career. He joins a computer sales company, AYS, as a trainee. Under a corrupt senior, the job soon turns into one of his worst nightmares. Rocket Singh in short is Harpreet Singh Bedi’s journey from a zero to a hero.

Rocket Singh Review

What works in Rocket Singh – Salesman of the year

  • Shimit Amin, the director of Ab Tak Chappan and Chak De India, is in top form. The feel of the corporate world has been captured very realistically. The writing (Jaideep Sahni) is top notch too, with several scenes making great impact – the first job interview, conversations between Harpreet and his senior manager Nitin, the scene in the club where Harpreet is insulted by his boss, when his boss gets to know about his secret company, his confrontations and many more.
  • The second half is better paced (compared to the first) and much more entertaining.
  • Like Chak De, Rocket Singh too has some fantastically written characters. The one that stands out though, is Nitin’s. We have no clue about the name of the actor, Yashraj hasn’t revealed it just yet. Nitin as Ranbir’s senior, is fantastic and easily the deserves the top acting honors.
  • For probably the first time in his career, Ranbir Kapoor is not the pick of actors. While he does a good job as a Sardar, mingling with the others and completely looking the character, the others steal the scene.
  • The romance too works largely due to Shazahn Padamsee’s sweetness, charm and fantastic screen presence.
  • Its nice to finally see a Sardar, who are usually seen as clowns, presented realistically.
  • Background music by Salim – Suleiman was good.

Performances, in no particular order, since all were good!

  • The guy who played the character of Nitin, is by far the best of the lot.
  • Ranbir Kapoor – As usual natural, perfect for the character and proves yet again why he’s considered, by many, as the next superstar.
  • Shazahn Padamsee – Sweet, sexy and does very well in the acting department too.
  • D Santosh – Was brilliant as Rajguru in the Legend of Bhagat Singh. In Rocket Singh, playing a sex-obsessed character, he does very well.
  • Prem Chopra after a long long time is good as Harpreet’s father.
  • Suri as the owner of AYS, is good.
  • Gauhar Khan is as good as the others.
  • Mukesh Bhatt too was fantastic.

Coming to the negatives

  • Rocket Singh is too long, exceeding 3 hours (including intermission)
  • The pace isn’t too great. The first half was slow and at times boring.
  • Music is average.

Don’t go in expecting a comedy, Rocket Singh is a realistic film that deals with serious issues. Perfect casting, fabulous performances, good direction and writing make Rocket Singh a good one-time watch.

All said and done though, without taking any credit away from Shimit Amin, Rajkumar Hirani was probably the best man to direct a film like Rocket Singh.

Rating: ★★★½☆ With a bit of patience, you should enjoy this.

Yday i couldnt open this site at al.. but Nauman posted me his full review on yahoo…:)

  • indicine and nauman excellent reviews. I felt the same but I agree with taran on the same point that ending didnt gave a feeling of victory or euphoria. Also the movie is promoted as a comedy but it is not, I think that may affect its reviews to some extent. I like the point that masand said in his review that the makers didnt compromised on the script to make it more boxoffice appealing

As Veer takes on the might of the British Empire, he also has to fight the conniving King of Madavgarh as well his own jealous tribesmen. • Some unapproved comments, approved.. Looks like almost everyone found it boring and long..

  • Rocket Singh (My Review)

By profession I head a team of Training in a private Telecom Organization. We preapre and deliver training modules for Sales Teams. So deffintely, when I watched this movie, my angle of evaluation was a bit different from what i normally carry. Before going into a detailed analysis, I am glad to acknowledge that Rocket Singh has certain dimensions to it which will make me rocommend this movie to the sales people in my next training session :)

Now this was a difficult one to conceive and deliver…it was quite obvious that the makers would be aware of the fact that everyone is expecting a comedy out of this film…but the compliment must go to the people behind this attempt that they stuck to the honesty and realism of the script and came up with an end product that almost every sales person can relate to.

The portrayal of office enviornment was spot-on…There a re few characters and incidents in the movie…which u casn find almost in every sales office: A boss who has all eyes only for the revenue coming in irrespective of the means through which it is coming; a manager who taunts and insults…yet is helpful in certain areas; a pervert employee who utilizes the office internet and computers to enhance his fantacies; a receptionist who is straight forward and bashes off all the vulgar eyes and words thrown at her; colleagues who enjoy and strive together but are engaged in leg pulling and customer-snatching; employees complaining of enhanced targets and a new comer who arrives with ideals in his mind. All this was so naturally conceived and delivered that one cant help but applaud the effort.

This sort of a film can not be what it is without people who look like normal folks and are not over-shaded by star-charisma…and this is exactly what we get from a bunch of actors who are not well-known yet are so cometent…the fact that most of the faces have not been pre-associated with any sort of acting…contributes a long way in making them relatable and believable. The guys playing the roles of Nitin and Suri are immaculate in their roles…they fit the part and play the part perfectly. Giri’s look and attire is exactly in synch with his character; Gauhar Khan, the guy playing the role of Tea Boy and even the short portrayals made by the clients are commendable. Shazahn Padamsee is adorable and most surprisingly it was the first time that Prem Chopra’s pressence was such a pleasant one.

And then there is Ranbir Kapoor…the only actor in the movie who has an image and a star status associated with him…and being relatively new in the craft, he had all the possibilities to get carried away with this…but he is immensely impressive in shreding off every bit of a “STAR” from his role and has portrayed it with such maturity that now there is not doubt whatsoever that he is going to stay in this industry for a long time to come. The most impressive was his dialogue delivery in the last scene when he was emphasizing on the “Customer Satisfaction”…he delivered the dialogues in such a suttle manner and his expressions were so convincing … BRAVO. I simply loved his character…for once we have a main protaganist who doesn’t shout and scream when he is insulted…there is no out-burst…its all so natural and realistic.

Yes, there are a few flaws in the narrative as well…The Rocket Throwing is a bit over-the-top; the fact (also pointed out by Nauman in his review) that the customers are not requiring any invoices or receipts is a bit hard to swallow. Commercially, the film might suffer a set back due to three reasons…

    1. The slow pace and lack of entertainement quotient (what people might’ve been expecting)
    2. Not everyone could understand and relate to the proceedings of a sales department (though the people associated with sales departments would feel it to be a portrayal of their own lives)

The climax might be low on the “Heroic” criterias…but it was never supposed to be heroic…yet the makers could’ve enhanced the effect through back ground music, flashes of scenes with all the partners cherishing the succes…or a little amount of emotions would have done the tricks where Ranbir could’ve gone to the rest of the partners and deliverd the good news to them.

Overall…it was a pleasant experience and the message of “Customer’s Importance” (which is of supreme significance in Corporate world) was well established. Thumbs up for Parsoon and Shimit for attempting and succeeding in delivering this off-beat theme.

Selling is not an easy thing…and what is offered for sale by the makers of this film…SIR WE ARE READY TO BUY YOUR PRODUCT !!!

  • Akhlaq Bhai:
nice review like taran adarsh’s tipical style … like hard gramatical english , and complete bakc ground of movie or subject, but very good i like it , so in reviews after indicine i hv another compititer , i m feeling jalousing buddy , hahahaha just kididng
i hv some questions from u
where did u watch this movie ?
doest sales manager have this kind of get up like his beard and musteche ?
do other coleagues throw this kind of rockets in their office ?
coz u hv good experience in sales so u know the environment of sales deptt.

  • LoL Nauman bhayee :-) thanks alot for appreciating my review. There is no such thing as competition between brothers. The answers to ur questions. I watched the movie in DHA cinema Lahore, Pakistan. The get up of nitin was a bit awkward but unfortunately a few professionals these days r adapting strange getups. There is one wierdo sales manager in my company as well. He had long hair and then one day he came to office with a bald head n a funny lookin mexican moustach . These days he is havin a goti. LoL.
About the third question… I mentioned in my review that throwing rockets at ranbir was over done. It doesn’t happen at all in offices . At least not in the ones i’ve seen in my life . Its among one of the flaws is the narrative that i’ve mentione in my review.
Thanks again for your compliments. And i really owe it to u and indicine as it was ur reviews that induced me to watch the film.

  • Nauman: to be honest.. the movie is not encouraging that much.. I went yesterday to watch a movie in a new cinema at our City Centre and didn’t plan which one.. and the guy there told me: why don’t u watch Rocket Singh? I replied: ppl say it’s 3 hours and a boring movie ( although I like Ranbir and already said that I’ll watch any movie for him) and I was eager to watch it coz I thought he’ll be funny in this movie too.. like APKGK.. but after reading Taran Adarsh’s review.. I was hesitated to go.. I can’t stand any boring movie in cinema hall for 3 hours.. and probably others too think this way.. there4 they’re not that interested to watch it.. everyone expected that it’s a funny movie coz of the way he looks in the promos.. but it’s not! and the manager in the cinema said: I don’t think it’ll be a good movie for you but lots of indian liked it specially men.. might be good for some who works in the same fields as sales men or women.

I will watch it when the dvd releases.
