It’s official. Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees, which was first announced for Eid in February last year, has moved out of the lucrative festive weekend. Salman Khan’s Sultan will now get a solo release during what happens to be his most successful release period.
Producer Ritesh Sidhwani confirmed the news of Raees getting postponed.
“It was not an easy decision to move the film. We understand that our movie is highly anticipated. However, a film of such magnitude requires appropriate showcasing. Therefore, we have decided to shift our release date” Sidhwani said.
Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Mahira Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Raees has been indefinitely postponed to a later date.

- February 2015: Raees is announced for Eid 2016.
- 10 April 2015: Raees goes on floors.
- 22 April 2015: Shah Rukh Khan joins the cast and crew
- June 23 2015: Yash Raj Films announces Sultan starring Salman Khan in the lead. Release date sends shock waves, sets up what’s touted as the ‘mother of all clashes’ between Shah Rukh and Salman.
- June 23 2015: Amidst rumours of Raees moving to a later date, Ritesh Sidhwani tweets “Speculation on #Raees release date! It all ends this Eid”

- December 2015: A lot is riding on the Bajirao Mastani vs Dilwale clash. Shah Rukh Khan is the king of clashes, no one (media and trade) gives Bajirao Mastani and Sanjay Leela Bhansali a chance. They all know what happened to SLB the last time he decided to take on SRK.
- December 21 2015: With content overpowering superstardom, Bajirao Mastani betters Dilwale at the domestic box office. This sends shockwaves in the industry, yet again. Rumours of Raees moving out of Eid get stronger in the trade.
- February 12 2016: A well-known trade analysts tweets that Raees has moved from Eid. Ritesh Sidhwani once again clarifies and rubbishes the rumours “Some people spreading Rumours about #Raees release being moved.. Like I said RUMOURS”
- April 2016: Shah Rukh Khan’s FAN releases in theatres, opens well but crashes on Monday. Finishes with lifetime domestic business of less than 85 crore. The failure of the film once again sends shockwaves. Trade wants Sultan for Eid, exhibitors at mass centres firmly in favour of the Salman Khan starrer too. Raees releasing just 3 months after FAN isn’t a great idea from a producer’s point of view either. Clash almost certain to be averted, which is confirmed in almost every QnA session here on Indicine.

If they were confident about their product, they could have preponned it by one week, if they didn’t want a direct clash with Sultan, but this will end up no where.

Also, heard that there is a drift going on between SRK and the producers.
Recently, they held a pre-screening, and SRK seems to be dissatisfied with few scenes and he wants to shoot them again.
Not sure till what extent it is true, but one thing is sure.
“Decision of shifting the dates might hamper the chances of Raees big time, if they don’t get a suitable release date”.

Unlike you and many other claim that Raees was announced first for Eid 2016 release, it was Sultan that had been announced first. DNA India Reported way back in October 2014 that BB and Sultan were scheduled for releases in Eid 2015 and Eid 2016 respectively.
And Raees was announced for Eid 2016 in February 2015. But Ritesh Sidwani paid many media and PR Agents to sing his song and illude the audiences that Raees had been announced first.
Now, he tastes his own medicines.

As I am very new to this site, and writing this first time. Why all fans whether they are srk fans or Salman fans give that much importance to box office. See either movie hit or flop, the most important thing is do you really enjoy the movie. Salman or SRK never share their profit with their fans, then why fight on who is doing better on box office. For me, it is always matter the contents. For that I appreciate good movies like Talwar, Niraja, Natsamrat etc. And for that matter I like Jungle Book and now Sairat (Marathi Movie). Good cinema should be appreaciated more and should be reached to more peoples.

Agreed Salman is the biggest superstar considering his phenomenal box office success and personally I love him too.

I don’t see it as him being scared rather his whole team Raees deserves a run that will not be affected by any movie. On that note I just hope he gets a good date and release his movie for it to also contest amongst the hgoty.
Salman sultan no doubt seems the most likiest hgoty but Srk for me will give him a very close competition. Both are the countries arguably biggest stars including Aamir. Both can create wonders with just one Friday. Let’s hope both of their Fridays are lucrative accelerated Fridays indicating success. Last thing to imagine is to write off Shah rukh. He is a wonderful actor…

Well finally after creating so much hype and drama they finally announce it.
Had wanted the clash to take place even though it never looked practical to me. But obviously didnt want Raees to back out so either it should have been Sultan backing out for me or the clash had taken place. Raees backing out always had to reflect negatively on both SRK and Raees movie.
But as I had said before if that was the decision to be taken then I had wished they should have announced it months before. All the hype and drama should have been avoided.
Anyways I am glad that at least the never ending speculation (whether Raees coming on eid or not) has finally ended. Hoping they get a good release date.
Best of luck to both Raees team and Sultan team for their respective movies.
