QnA: What if PRDP clashed with Bajirao Mastani?

Continuation of our QnA.. Read the page if you haven’t

Q. What if Prem Ratan Dhan Payo clashed with Bajirao Mastani during Diwali? – Neeraj

A. Interesting question. Any clash between two big films will divide the number of available screens and shows both at multiplexes and single-screens. Ratio will differ, but business will be divided.

There are three stages for a big clash; One, getting a good release which includes booking single-screens in prime areas and ensuring that your films not only gets good amount of shows at multiplexes, but also gets shows at the right time slots (because evening / night shows perform better than morning / noon). Second stage is the opening, the period when star power ensures high occupancy in theatres. The third stage is when the word-of-mouth comes into play. The film that has the advantage in the last stage, should, in most cases, win the clash.

PRDP would have probably won the first two stages, but it’s in the third that Bajirao Mastani would have taken the lead. Also, the Salman starrer would have lost around 30-35% in its first weekend.

The advantage for a solo release is, the audience has no other choice. You either watch PRDP or you don’t watch a film. When there is a choice between two films, the film that finds appreciation among the audience, will automatically become the first choice, irrespective of the star cast. So to answer your question, PRDP would have easily lost around 60 crore if it released with Bajirao Mastani.

Q. Considering mixed response to Dilwale, what would have been lifetime collections had it released solo on 25 December? It would have easily crossed 100 crore in 3 days. What about lifetime? – Amit Jain

A. Like we mentioned in the last question, when there is no other choice, any big film has a serious advantage. If Dilwale released on 25th December, it would have taken a record opening, possibly the highest of all time.

Q. Dear Indicine, is box office collections everything nowadays? Is that the only way to count an actor’s greatness? Few days back I saw a Hrithik fan asking you to post an article on comparison between Bang Bang and Dilwale.. So that he can say Hrithik is better than SRK. I mean seriously, SRK has achieved everything that a other actor only can dream of.. But in the end the only thing is matter is crore clubs?

A. There are several ways to look at this. For the normal movie going audience, box office collections shouldn’t matter. If you like a star or like the trailer of a film, go and watch it. But for the same audience, box office collections could tell them whether to watch a film or not. If a film has opened strongly and sustains well, it means the audience is liking it.

From a star, there is nothing bigger than box office. If your movie is not collecting, people won’t invest in your films. These 100 crore and 200 crore clubs are very very important. Because if an actor is capable of delivering 200 crore grossers, producers can invest upwards of 100 crore on his films. With this, the scale, production design, big directors, world class technicians and everything else becomes more affordable. If you aren’t a star in India, but a great actor like Irrfan Khan, you can’t make a superhero film like Krrish. It won’t even collect 20 crore and the cost of production for such films becomes far more than what ‘talented actor but non-stars’ can recover.

Fan wars is something different altogether. Everyone likes to see their own favourite star at the top of the ranking and box office gives the correct picture of the current standing of an actor. About Hrithik vs SRK. Current standing and legacy of an actor are two different things. In a few years from now, if a young actor emerges and delivers bigger results, he will be compared. Even Ranveer Singh could challenge Salman/SRK at the box office in the future, he could be bigger some day, but that doesn’t mean his achievements and legacy are the comparable to those two.

  • I thinks it’s going to be New 2012
    In 2012 –
1 – ETT – 199 crs missed the chance to become Highest Grosser
2 – Dabangg 2 – 155 crs. top two movies were of salman khan
SRK’s crap JTHJ clashed with Good entertainer SOS and missed the chance to become 2nd or 3rd highest film of the year behind ETT or D2 movie
    In 2015 –
    1) BB – 320 crs missed the chance to become H G
    2) PRDP – 213 crs. top movies r of Salman till now.
SRK’s crap entertainer clashed with classic masterpiece. and failing to become 2nd highest grossing film of the year behind BB.

  • It’s kinda funny…I mean one is having US$600 million nd other is like US$200 million..they are super rich…superstars…they make movies..they make money..they move on…dunno Dilwale is hit or not but one thing for the guy had nd will make crores coz of it so with every of there movie…nd then here r we so called fans not even having a million dollar but busting r ass off saying he is bigger he is better…guys relax..thy are zillionaires…u don’t need to worry abt them..

Dude, I second to your statement whole-heartedly. Tumne Mere Dil Ki Baat Kehdi…
Yes I too believe Indicine gives priority to SRK and news related to him. For the reasons best known to them, they always try to show everything in the positive light.

They use the term ‘CRASH’ if the BO performances of other actors significantly fall down but they used ‘…. bigger than expected decline…’ when Dilwale almost crashed on Monday, straight from 24 crs to 10 plus crores.. That says it all.. And many!

    @Sooraj @11:09 on Dec 23
No! That Ram Lal rules neither my brain nor my heart. I can straightly ignore him. The reason why I am posting comments under Ram Lal related articles is that I am just paying back to the Ram Lal fans like you spit venoms around a clean family film like PRDP.
I have been visiting this site since Wanted time in 2009. For the initial few years, I hardly used to visit Ram Lal articles. But you Dhobis used to maliciously bash Salman and his films. I used to only defend Salman in those days. But later I realized that that’s (defending is) not enough. AND I would have to attack as well. So I am here.

I will be bashing Ram Lal and his films as long as his puny fans like SSS, IAnAsadKaungNanga, Chaman, FoXZone and others keep spreading negativity against our much beloved Salman Bhai..

Do you see a comment of SSS & AKN & alike without taking the name of Salman Khan??? So you had better stop crying foul now.

Never been able to understand why people think media favours SRK, award ceremonies favour SRK, industry supports SRK.. why would anyone support an outsider, who was a nobody 2.5 decades ago? Maybe because he sells?
    */

You just spoke out of my heart. Since very beginning, I say that if Filmfare and other journalists (both print as well as electronic media) are favoring SRK, isn’t it a shame for others that an outsider came from nowhere and today he is ruling the entire industry?
But these fools will never understand that.

Coming to this article, as you said it would have lost 60 cr means the actual collection would have been (215-60=155 cr) or even less.
    Lol.

  • It is pointless comparing PRDP with other films. We can also ask what if Ranveer Singh was in PRDP? The point is Salman is Salman. Whether the film is good or not Salman will make it a hit. SRK just doesn’t have it anymore. Even with a young couple at his side the film is not doing that great. SRK can’t make a bad film as big a hit as how Salman can make it a hit.

BM is a good film and if Salman was staring in it, it would have collected 100cr in just 3 days. This I am sure everyone knows it.

Don’t compare films. Compare the actors.

  • Ha ha ha ha m if prdp released with clash then life time will not beat jai ho…thats sure…. waiting for clash raees vs sultana

  • Lol some sallluman fan think that SLB is salman’s mentor..lol..did u here what Slb last time said…lol i will post here…ha ha ha ha

  • sanjay Leela Bhansali feels superstar Salman Khan would be “happy” that the filmmaker’s most-ambitious project till date, “Bajirao Mastani”, has finally released, even though the actor could notbe a part of it as the director had envisioned earlier.“Bajirao Mastani”, the magnum opus starringDeepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh,Priyanka Chopra, released last Friday (December 18).Bhansali had been wanting to make the period romance from past 12 years. The film was originally envisaged with SalmanandAishwarya RaiBachchan in the lead roles. The pair’s break-up put the film in crisis.“I think Salman will be happy to see that I have fulfilled my dream. He is beyond films. He is a cult today. He just stands ina film and the film will do Rs 300 crore (business). It doesn’t matter to him if he has done ‘Bajirao Mastani’ or not,” Bhansali told PTI.“I am sure he will be happy that I have at least fulfilled my dream that I lived for so many years. I don’t want to go away from the industry without having done it. I thinkhe will be happy somewhere for it,” he said. The “Guzaarish” director says he would like to show the film to Salman. Also read: Salman Khan – Shah Rukh Khan reunion on Bigg Boss 9 “I would love to show the film to Salman but I don’t know if he would like to see it. Salman is my favourite even if I have not met him or spoken to him in the last five years, but I have a special bond with him. He has done a lot for me and I am grateful to him for many things in life,” hesaid.“I don’t have the courage to call him and say ‘Would you like to see my film’ because he will say ‘Go away, I don’t wantto see it,” he said.

  • Thats the reason srk is no 1 just go through comment section everytime i excersice this i have found 90 cent discussion on srk indicine what happened after the end of srk we have only two kind of people regarding bollywood srk haters and srk lovers srk lovers fans of srk haters fans of salman amir hrithik aksahy and the old amitabh fans also hate srk beleieve me in my family all previous generation is against srk end of the arguement is long live srk

  • @Indicine, your conclusions are completely out of the way and more imaginative.

No matter what movie is clashing whether festival time or not, it is only bound to affect the other one not more than 10% to 15%. Until unless you have a completely niche film or a movie like Bombay Velvet where the interest “in real world” was zero.

The reason being, just because a person doesn’t get to see a movie would not mean he will see the other one.

In the current clash, many people who could not get tickets of Dilwale have not went and purchased tickets for Bajirao. That’s not how it works. There is a thing called interest.

If I am motivated to see a comedy, action or entertainer, i will not force myself to see a periodic film just because tickets are available. The other aspect being the actors and directors too should be of interest to me.

Most people will wait for the next available show, date or holiday to catch up their interest film.

At the most of the viewers only 10 to 15% will take the alternate option.

Hence your assumption of PRDP losing 60 crs to Bajirao, if the clash had happened, it completely out of way assumption.

Also, it is wrong to make assumptions on the basis of What if this, or what if that kind of queries?

Majority, including your goodselves, underestimated Bajirao, so making assumptions out of thin air is to be avoided at the best.

    Just my two cents.

  • @indicine never ans assuming qstn but u ans so mera bhi ek simple sa qstn h ..all cast of prdp in dilwale without salman how much dilwale earn if srk is lead nd all cast of prdp ..? With bm clash can u ans me..!!

  • you r believing in producer fig then do you believe that tamasha was hit as producer had given success party ….pls show my comments as I said truth

  • I think the collection of Dilwale is getting hit 20% nearly because still the theatres are not screening the movie in Mangalore where rohit shetty movie works a lot. Dilwale is offscreen in south Karnataka for past 3 days because of the protest by VHP and Bajrang Dal. Same has been the case with some parts in rajasthan and MP. Also social media has taken the toll on the collection since general view of the public is getting manipulated because of the Whatsapp and FB messages which is being forwarded to boycott the movie if we are patriot. I have got those mesages from my friends and have seen them circulating very fast and deep down. But still ignoring everything I went Dilwale without any expectation because of the negative vibe that movie won’t being but I found the movie to be entertaining in parts especially for a normal time pass for family for which the movie is targeted. I just hope for everyone to be responsible while circulating or trolling a movie since it is our film industry which is getting impacted. SRK will not loose money, it is the exhibitors and distributors who will be loosing which will also impact the future films.

  • @Indicine, i never told people would watch two movies. I said people would mostly prefer to watch “one” movie that interest them. If I want to watch Dilwale, and i don’t get tickets, I will wait for the next show, but i still won’t watch Bajirao just because Dilwale is housefull.

Very few would skip one to watch another because of tickets unavailability.

  • Dear Sir/Madam,

When we are going to see the Top 15 ranking actors of India. With Dilwale getting mixed response and the film might just scrape through the hit status. With Salman at No 1, Aamir at No 2, will Hrithik at No 4 move up and overtake Shah rukh and get to No 3 ranking. As Dilwale hasnt performed upto the boxoffice expectations and where will Ranveer singh stand in the rankings. Awaiting eagerly for Top 15 ranking actors of India.

  • Bajirao Mastani has getting been rave reviews and great appreciation from the audiences and in the final tally will Bajirao Mastani overtake Dilwale in boxoffice collections in India and will Bajirao Mastani from being hit will it reach superhit status kindly clarify? On the other hand Dilwale has been panned and criticized both by the audiences and critics for its weak content and will Dilwale finally reach hit status? With Salman at No 1, Aamir at No 2, will Hrithik at No 4 overtake Shahrukh and get to the No 3 ranking because of Dilwale underperforming at the boxoffice and when we will see the Top 15 ranking actors of India since the year has come to an end.
