QnA: What if PRDP clashed with Bajirao Mastani?

Continuation of our QnA.. Read the page if you haven’t

Q. What if Prem Ratan Dhan Payo clashed with Bajirao Mastani during Diwali? – Neeraj

A. Interesting question. Any clash between two big films will divide the number of available screens and shows both at multiplexes and single-screens. Ratio will differ, but business will be divided.

There are three stages for a big clash; One, getting a good release which includes booking single-screens in prime areas and ensuring that your films not only gets good amount of shows at multiplexes, but also gets shows at the right time slots (because evening / night shows perform better than morning / noon). Second stage is the opening, the period when star power ensures high occupancy in theatres. The third stage is when the word-of-mouth comes into play. The film that has the advantage in the last stage, should, in most cases, win the clash.

PRDP would have probably won the first two stages, but it’s in the third that Bajirao Mastani would have taken the lead. Also, the Salman starrer would have lost around 30-35% in its first weekend.

The advantage for a solo release is, the audience has no other choice. You either watch PRDP or you don’t watch a film. When there is a choice between two films, the film that finds appreciation among the audience, will automatically become the first choice, irrespective of the star cast. So to answer your question, PRDP would have easily lost around 60 crore if it released with Bajirao Mastani.

Q. Considering mixed response to Dilwale, what would have been lifetime collections had it released solo on 25 December? It would have easily crossed 100 crore in 3 days. What about lifetime? – Amit Jain

A. Like we mentioned in the last question, when there is no other choice, any big film has a serious advantage. If Dilwale released on 25th December, it would have taken a record opening, possibly the highest of all time.

Q. Dear Indicine, is box office collections everything nowadays? Is that the only way to count an actor’s greatness? Few days back I saw a Hrithik fan asking you to post an article on comparison between Bang Bang and Dilwale.. So that he can say Hrithik is better than SRK. I mean seriously, SRK has achieved everything that a other actor only can dream of.. But in the end the only thing is matter is crore clubs?

A. There are several ways to look at this. For the normal movie going audience, box office collections shouldn’t matter. If you like a star or like the trailer of a film, go and watch it. But for the same audience, box office collections could tell them whether to watch a film or not. If a film has opened strongly and sustains well, it means the audience is liking it.

From a star, there is nothing bigger than box office. If your movie is not collecting, people won’t invest in your films. These 100 crore and 200 crore clubs are very very important. Because if an actor is capable of delivering 200 crore grossers, producers can invest upwards of 100 crore on his films. With this, the scale, production design, big directors, world class technicians and everything else becomes more affordable. If you aren’t a star in India, but a great actor like Irrfan Khan, you can’t make a superhero film like Krrish. It won’t even collect 20 crore and the cost of production for such films becomes far more than what ‘talented actor but non-stars’ can recover.

Fan wars is something different altogether. Everyone likes to see their own favourite star at the top of the ranking and box office gives the correct picture of the current standing of an actor. About Hrithik vs SRK. Current standing and legacy of an actor are two different things. In a few years from now, if a young actor emerges and delivers bigger results, he will be compared. Even Ranveer Singh could challenge Salman/SRK at the box office in the future, he could be bigger some day, but that doesn’t mean his achievements and legacy are the comparable to those two.

  • @Indicine. Kindly answer this question. As star wars is mainly a multiplex movie which movie would be affected more bm or Dilwale. Guess it would be bm more And as pvr s tied up with Dilwale ll allot more screens in week 2 when compared with bm???

    • @Noam, exhibitors only care about higher occupancy. Bajirao Mastani won’t be affected because the trend is super strong. Dilwale’s fate is dependent on big growth this weekend.

  • In last few years, two times a big film has clashed with Srk starer but no one has dared to clash with Amir and Salman.
    This says it all.
No need of debate, no need of formulas to calculate stardom.

  • Ek number ka feku hai bhai indicine.
Jo Mann Mein aya likh do.
    Srk ko promotes kar
Naam change karle srk ke naam pe

  • Forget about clashing with Salman but except one example no one has even dared to release film after one week of Salman Khan film.

  • Ranveer is Bhakat of Hrithik
He has taken revenge from srk
    Mission kashmir vs Mohhabbtein
    Mission kashmir took big opening
But in end better content movie Mohhabbtein win
Same case here Dilwale took bigger opening but lost in lifetime
End of media created Khan Era is coming in 2016
2016 will be year of Hrithik Akshay Ajay Ranveer
DANGAL will be biggest disaster of all time if it will be against kaabil or befikre
    Har har mahadev

  • @Indicine team, first week footfall of PRDP around 1.85cr and first week bo collection around 170cr. After lifetime collection are 213cr then footfall only 2.2cr.

  • @ Indicine I will be glad if you answer my question or at least reply since many people are confused regarding the 5th day collections of both Dilwale and BM . If possible reply as soon as possible .

  • @ team indicine becoz u posted each nd every article related to srk it is 100 % correct u were biased when someone put the question wat if BB clash with dilwale u can’t answer becoz u knw wat happens

  • If prdp had clashed with BM then it would have broken Bombay velvet’s record. Because everyone knows the aukaat of lallu chapal wala. Lallu lal was defeated by even the likes of emran hashmi, imran khan and fardeen khan when he clahsed with them. That shows that even those flop actors were bigger stars than lallu lal chapal wala. Lallu chapal ki dukaan us relying and existing in the industry only because of eid, diwali, Christmas and solo releases otherwise hid stardom is even lower than flop actors. Srk is still much bigger star than lallu lal.

  • Indicine you are the same site which gave 4* to prdp and 3.5 * to bm. I dont think box office works on assumptions like you have taken in first answer. Why would prdp clashed with bm as its appeal was limited only to small centres and family audience while dilwale is a commercial masala film. I dont think there is any answer to this question and wished that you shouldn’t have been biased towards one film. Your site takes a backseat when it is between salman and srk as srk is your most favourite and it shows in your answers. You have chosen prdp please do the same with bb and pk. I dont think bm would collect even 50 cr against these films. Now please post my comment. I m your regular user.

    • @Fayez, our answer wasn’t actually specific to those films. If both are good movies with strong word-of-mouth, then both Bajirao Mastani and Bajrangi Bhaijaan would do well. Like Welcome and Taare Zameen Par. Gadar and Lagaan.

Bajirao Mastani would have probably collected around 20% less than what it will collect against Dilwale. And Bajrangi would have collected about 20% less too.

  • @akash even a kid can understand this .. Happy New Year last year opened to a packed houses all over right from the morning till the last show. The response was ‘bumper’.
Coming to Dilwale, the screens were disrupted at many places, the response was ‘Excellent’, could have been bumper if there were no protests.
Bajirao’s response was ‘Good/Very Good’, hence the collections speak for themselves.
Next time, use your brain before you speak
    #Dilwale Worldwide Blockbuster
    #Kaali

  • @Indicine
    Accept it or not.
You are hugely biased towards Srk.
You were one the very very few sites rating Dilwale more than BM and probably only site to rate Dilwale and Hny more than BB and PK.
When some one compares Amir with Srk then you give Amir’s credit to his films and when some one says Salman has been ruling since last 5 years then you say Amir was also there along with Salman.
When Some one asks which was bigger hit between HAHK and Ddlj then you say Ddlj was bigger hit. And you gave the reason that though its collections were lower than HAHK but it was more critically acclaimed than HAHK. When did you started considering critical acclaim whole deciding box office verdict.

  • When I talk with my brother then I always say him that Indicine is the best bollywood site but has only problem that they are biased towards Srk.

  • The question is baseless…why this question ?? What if I say “if sholay clashed with dullwale” ?? Better, questions should be asked for future movies not past movies??

  • I read in a comment Befikre will release next year. If Befikre will come out 2016 why not Befikre clashes with ADHM then Rustam with Shivaay, while Mohenjo daro clashes with Dangal. I think it will be more balanced. Or Befikre clash with Rustam! but let Mohenjo clash with Dangal(that shd be a constant).
    2. I don’t think Prdp would have lost up to 60 crs it’s too much. I think 30-35 crores at most. Am sure SLB wldv postponed the release date.

  • I always wanted to say these things and many more. But thought that it will create my wrong impression on you forever.
But ab baat chid hi gayi hai to dil ka sara dard bahar a gaya.

  • As Dilwale is dominating the smaller centers and mostly at single screen, will it get more affected by Star wars than Bajirao Mastani will get? Reason is BM is dominating at multiplexs so…what’s ur call?
